The date might be changed but the movie remains the same: The Lorax bring the world of Dr. Seuss to the stage in this animated adventure about 12-year-old Ted, who will do anything to find a real live Truffula Tree in order to impress the girl of his dreams. As he embarks on his journey, Ted discovers the incredible story of the Lorax, a grumpy but charming creature who speaks for the trees.

The film starts at 8 p.m. and residents are reminded to bring along blankets and sweaters for warmth in addition to lawn chairs and snacks.

Movie night is offered free of charge and everyone is invited.

Kalamaris’ son, Peter Kalamaris Jr., pleaded with councillors at Tuesday’s meeting to put aside city staff recommendations to deny his father the honour of namesaking a laneway in his beloved Weston because of mere procedure.

York heroes take home Jubilee awards M

ore than a dozen local heroes who have made an exceptional contribution to York and beyond have been honoured with Diamond Jubilee awards.

The medal, which pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years on the throne, was awarded to 14 recipients by York South-Weston MPP Laura Albanese at Queen’s Park on Aug. 31.

“I am proud to have been given this opportunity to recognize 14 outstanding citizens in York SouthWeston,” she said. “Their spirit of contribution is fittingly recognized with this Diamond Jubilee medal and we are lucky to have them in our community.”

The winners have different backgrounds and varied interests, but they share a common goal of making their community, province and country a better place. n Rev. Michel Belzile, a native of Montreal, is an ordained minister who has been at Greenborough Community Church for the past 12 years. An active member of the community, the married father of two university students is co-founder of the Interfaith Community Building Initiative and Clerics and Cops. He also serves on the Greenhills Community Association, the Harold and Grace Baker Centre’s spiritual and religious care advisory committee and the Community Police Liaison Committee at 12 Division. n Fergy Brown was the mayor of York from 1988 to 1994.

Born in Scotland before moving to York at the age of five, he served in Canada’s bomber command during the Second World War and owned a pharmacy in his private career. He was first elected the York Borough council in 1969 and was re-elected in 1972. He was a member of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the Toronto Transit Commission and led the former Metro Toronto’s social services committee. He now serves as the president of the Learning Enrichment Foundation and other service agencies. n Born in Italy and a Catholic priest since 1966, Father Gianni Carparelli came to Toronto in 1980 and lived alongside Italian, Portuguese and Spanish immigrants. After seeing members of the community struggle with drug dependency, gambling and mental health disorders, the popular and unconventional priest established some therapeutic programs. When a distraught mother searching for help for her drug-addicted son turned to him for help, Carparelli founded Caritas, a 25-month “school of life” addiction rehabili-

tation program, the only program of its kind in Canada. n Major David C. Forster is a cadet instructor officer who has received provincial and national awards. He is credited with reviving Weston’s 700 David Hornell VC Air Cadet Squadron. Forster commutes from Hamilton to work with the squadron’s 200 cadets. n A Toronto police officer for more than 30 years, Scott Gilbert began in the traffic unit in 1980.

Since then, he has served in several important posts, including the criminal investigations bureau and the sexual assault and child abuse unit at 55 Division and the criminal investigations and community response units at 13 Division. He was promoted to inspector in 2008, and in 2010 was transferred to 12 Division as the number two in charge. His is a married father of five. n Luisa Giacometti has spent more than 30 years volunteering with police, residents and government to improve the community.

She has held several key volunteer positions with community associations and at the Royal Ontario Museum. Giacometti was unable to attend the ceremony. n Denis Hoban has assisted underprivileged children and seniors in the community and at the Church of Immaculate Conception for more than 30 years.

His volunteer work is extensive

and wide-reaching. n Dr. Vincent Kong has volunteered his time to promote artistic and cultural programs across Canada. He has volunteered with the Sino-Canadian Exchange Society to promote multiculturalism. As Kong was not available to attend the presentation, his father, Shih Kong, accepted the award on his son’s behalf. n Toronto police Const. Jim Lambe has spent more than 40 years making sure residents feel safe in their communities, including serving as a community relations officer for 20 years. n When Jackie Rosati first began with Villa Charities, she helped sell lottery tickets, which helped establish Villa Colombo Home for the Aged. Rosati went on to become Villa Colombo’s first director of nursing. For more than 30 years, she has volunteered with the Villa Colombo Ladies’ Auxiliary, making weekly visits to assist seniors.

Rosati, a dedicated volunteer in the Italian-Canadian community for more than 50 years, is also active in Villa Charities fundraising initiatives. In 2007, she donated a new state-of-the-art bus for seniors at Villa Colombo and Centro Anziani’s community programs. n Toronto police Supt. Mark Saunders, who moved to Canada from England at the age of five, joined the force in 1982 as a uniformed officer before

transferring to the drug squad.

He has served in a in many units including major crimes, the emergency task force, the fugitive squad, the homicide unit and professional standards. In February, he was promoted to superintendent and is now the unit commander of 12 Division. He is married with four children. n Brother Mohammed Shahied Shaikh is the director at the Masjid-El-Noor Mosque at Eglinton Avenue and Keele Street.

He has spent years mentoring troubled youth, including assisting the provincial courts and working with the police to encourage and inspire young people. n For more than 15 years, Barbara Spyropoulos has volunteered countless hours with the Toronto police. She is the co-chair of the community police liaison and restorative justice program at 12 division, organizing meetings, community events and youth programs. One of most innovative initiatives Spyropoulos oversees is the Stone Soup cooking club, where guest chefs teach teenagers how to create delicious and nutritious meals for pennies. n Frank Varacalli isn’t just a coach, he’s a mentor to youth in the community. He started out as a coach 20 years ago when he joined the Amesbury Sports Club and then became the president. He has volunteered countless hours coaching baseball and hockey to children.

At its Tuesday morning board meeting, Metrolinx announced it has awarded the first of two tunnelling contracts for work on the underground portion of the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown light rail transit line.

CEO Bruce McCuaig told the transit agency’s board of directors that Crosstown Transit Constructors, a consortium made up of four construction firms, won a contract to begin excavating 6.2 kilometres of tunnel from Black Creek Drive to Yonge Street beneath Eglinton Avenue West beginning in February.

He said the $320-million contract award represented a milestone in the completion of the transit line, which will run below ground in the west from Black Creek to Laird Drive and then travel east at street level to Scarborough’s Kennedy Station in a dedicated lane.

“Starting to build the tunnel is a significant step forward in the delivery of this project,” said McCuaig.

Metrolinx is still considering closing off northbound access of the Allen Expressway at Eglinton for construction staging related to the Crosstown, said McCuaig. He said discussions were continuing with the TTC, the city and community groups on the idea and how it could be best implemented without severely disrupting traffic in the area and ensuring that construction proceeds efficiently.

In all, four tunnel boring machines have been purchased for the Crosstown work. The companies making up the winning consortium are Obayashi Canada Ltd, Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd and Technicore Underground Inc.

Motorcyclist killed in crash on Marlee Ave. A motorcyclist is dead following a crash on Marlee Avenue Tuesday.

Police said the 24-year-old motorcyclist was heading north on Marlee when he struck a westbound Ford F150 truck on Glengrove Avenue around 8:40 a.m.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Teach your kids about finances

Terry Fox Run: sustain a legacy T

here’s a lesson for volunteer organizations to observe when it comes to the Terry Fox Run. The event has grown enormously over its 32 years and is now a worldwide undertaking – one that even goes beyond the traditional Sunday run in multiple locales. For example, there’s now a separate National School Run Day. There’s also an intriguing new initiative making its debut this year. Canadian university students are being urged to get involved with Terry’s Cause on Campus.

Among its goals is “to inspire future generations with Terry’s story of courage, selflessness and hope.” So far, our view nine events are confirmed, including one in Toronto.

Intriguing new Students at University of Toronto will participate in a run initiative for bringing students from all three of its campus locations (down- annual event town Toronto, Mississauga, Scarborough) to its Scarborough campus. While most of the university events are taking place Sunday, Toronto’s is scheduled for Oct. 3.

It’s a fitting expansion for a number of reasons.

Terry Fox was a first-year student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in his right leg being amputated above the knee. The connection of this event to a university campus is an obvious one.

Just as importantly, by directly engaging university students – our leaders of tomorrow – Terry Fox Run organizers are making a shrewd, sustainable investment in ensuring the continuation of Fox’s legacy.

It also signals renewal. Many organizations run the risk of becoming irrelevant once the generation that created those organizations passes on. It’s a sad, but undeniable reality; volunteer organizations need to consider a form of succession planning if they hope to be sustainable.

And there’s reason to hope. Our young people do volunteer.

In a Statistics Canada report released earlier this year, titled Caring Canadians, Involved Canadians, nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians between the ages of 15 and 24 volunteered at least once in the previous 12 months.

It’s the highest volunteer rate of the six age groups cited in the survey, and well above the provincial rate of 47.7 per cent.

Participating in the Terry Fox Run is an excellent way to honour the memory of a bonafide Canadian hero. It always has been.

It’s encouraging to see that growth continue and that investments are being made to ensure the continuation of Fox’s legacy.

To the editor: As a former high school teacher, the beginning of September always meant back to school.

I realize now that backto-school time is the perfect time to have a frank conversation with children about the importance of managing their personal finances, especially if they are moving out on their own.

The agency I lead, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), was established in 2001 to help Canadian consumers gain a better understanding of financial products and services. The Government of Canada has given FCAC the mandate to foster financial literacy.

My morning cup of coffee habit runneth over

used to go to A Popular Coffee Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless first thing every morning.

The lineups at my stop were legendary, just like at all their locations, but I didn’t mind. Toronto’s a big city that’s getting bigger by the nanosecond. Endless queues go with the territory.

Besides, at A Popular Coffee Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless, the wait was well worth it. As your basic devoted customer, the cashiers all recognized me and started punching in my order before I even had to ask.

What can I say? At that early hour when you’re not sure if you’re even conscious yet, every little bit helps.

Alas, nothing lasts forever, I’m afraid.

An unfortunate byproduct of that marketing strategy at my favourite haunt was that the cashiers now had so many goodies to keep track of, though they didn’t stop recognizing me, they couldn’t remember what I wanted anymore.

Not that I could blame them.

Fact is, I couldn’t remember what the heck I wanted anymore, either. They changed their cup sizes not

soon after and I was struggling just with that.

Nope. This was definitely a sign for me to move on. It was evident that it was way too much to absorb for all of us. I had to get out of there.

Ah, but where to go? That was the $1.80 question.

As it turns out, not very far at all. To a place just around the corner. A place I walk by every day. A place I had never thought of to get my morning coffee fix.

A placed known worldwide as A Popular FastFood Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless.

Whoulda thunk it?

I didn’t know anybody bought coffee at A Popular Fast-Food Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless. But many do, apparently.

And as it turns out, the coffee there is quite tasty.

What’s more, right off the bat my cashier passed the “customer service” litmus test with flying colours:

So I said, “I’ll drink to that.” Coffee, that is, of course.

And just what kind of coffee do I prefer, you may ask? Why, the only kind there is as far as I’m concerned.

ob Ford was never going to get out of that courtroom unscathed, and by the time Clayton Ruby was finished with him on the stand last Wednesday, the Mayor of Toronto was pretty much on the ropes.

At the end of it, our mayor emerged as a seemingly careless steward of the city, wilfully ignorant of the laws he had sworn to uphold, a passionate defender of the social benefits of high school football but disinterested in almost everything else.

It’s not a surprise. If Ruby had been permitted to by Judge Charles Hackland, he might have been able to introduce a laundry list of stories with which we are all familiar regarding Ford’s behaviour.

THE CITY

embarrassing questions Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner successfully argued that questioning on those matters would do more than embarrass the mayor.

It might also have embarrassed a great many voters – because let’s face it: no one who voted for him could say they weren’t told exactly the kind of guy Ford was.

Now, he is facing the

very real prospect of losing the job to which he was elected.

He is accused of contravening the Ontario Municipal Conflict of Interest Act when he spoke and voted on the floor of council in February on a matter in which he had a financial interest: a requirement by Toronto Council that he repay $3,150 to 11 lobbyists who donated to his football charity while he was a city councillor.

Unless Hackland is persuaded by Lenczner’s suite of finely honed legal arguments – council had no authority to order the repayment; the mayor made an error in judgement in good faith; Ford’s interpretation of the Conflict of Interest Act (which he admitted to never having read) is correct – he will have little choice but to remove the mayor from office.

Of course, there will be another election for the mayor should that happen.

If the sentence comes down without also imposing a restriction preventing him from running, it could be that Ford becomes a candidate in the byelection called to replace him.

Ford on the ballot?

It could be that he would prevail in such a byelection on the well-worn narrative of victimhood: Rob Ford, the candidate who was removed from elected office by a judge for the crime of helping schools in poor neighbourhoods have football teams.

If the judge imposes restrictions, count on him running again in the first election he can. And give him good odds of winning that one.

Because the time has come to face facts: when it comes to Rob Ford, there is a large constituency of voters that don’t want to face facts when it comes to their candidate. Pantelis Kalamaris’ legacy to live on >>>from page 1 and because the proposed name uses both Kalamaris’ first and last names, whereas the policy dictates only the last name be used.

Kalamaris’ son objected to the latter: “Respectfully, all of this outpouring of emotion and love is for one man – my father, Pantelis. This was never an initiative about the Kalamaris family, that’s why an alternate naming suggestion of the laneway as just Kalamaris Lane is not an option for our family,” he said.

Laura Albanese, MPP for York South-Weston, was one of more than 1,600 who signed a petition to allow the name change.

“Entrepreneurs like Mr. Kalamaris are the heart of

communities like Weston,” she wrote in a letter to EYCC, read aloud by Peter Kalamaris at Tuesday’s meeting. “I believe that giving the lane both his first and last name is a great nod toward the contribution he made and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.”

After immigrating to Canada from Greece in his early 20s, Kalamaris settled in Weston and in 1961 set up his nowiconic barber shop on John Street.

He also sponsored his brothers to come to Canada, and helped them set up their own businesses in Weston: Sun Crisp Fish and Chips, and P&M Restaurant, which remain family-owned.

The most famous of them, though, is Peter’s Barber Shop.

Subaru is making an entry into the super competitive CUV segment with the 2013 XV Crosstrek that combines legendary engine and all-wheel-drive technology with a “fun� package.

Fun and functionality Subaru has very successfully carved out a niche as the maker of tough, long-lasting cars and CUVs with the bonus of proven all-wheel-drive.

It has made this a virtue that people know and appreciate resulting in constant market growth.

Subaru says it has had time to think about what buyers in this market want and have concluded “fun� is missing.

Subaru will sell the XV Crosstrek in three trim levels: the XV Crosstrek Touring, Sport Package and Limited Package starting at $24,495/$26,495/$28,995 respectively. Standard equipment includes: tilt/ telescoping steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth control switches, power windows, door locks and body coloured side mirrors, 4.3-inch colour multi-function display with fuel economy information, automatic climate control and heated front seats, auto on/off headlights, outside temperature display and carpeted floor mats.

Additional standard creature comforts include heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer.

There is one engine, two transmissions and standard Subaru Symmetrical Full-time All-Wheel Drive. The 2.0-litre “Boxer� or horizontally opposed four-cylinder DOHC engine with direct injection is the same as found in the Impreza, here producing 148 hp and 145 lb/ft of torque.

There is a transmission choice of a standard fivespeed manual or Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT with six-speed sequential manual mode. Both come with hill holder mode and an ECO gauge to help the driver be as fuel efficient as possible.

The CVT adds $1,300 to the price of the XV. With the CVT in manual mode, steering wheel paddle shifters allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. The transmission also allows "second gear" starts in order to limit the likelihood of wheel spin on slippery surfaces.

With the CVT, fuel consumption numbers are 8.2/6.0/7.2L/100 km city/highway/combined and 8.9/6.7/7.9L/100 for the manual.

Another standard feature is the Vehicle Dynamics Control system that monitors and analyzes driver inputs. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel adjust automatically to assist in keeping the vehicle on course.

In normal conditions, torque split on the manual is 50:50 and on the CVT 60 per cent goes to the front and 40 per cent to the rear. Turn the key and you hear that classic, muffled “Boxer� engine sound peculiar to Subaru and Porsche.

With the five-speed (as with the six-speed BRZ I drove earlier this year), the best way to drive is with the revs up using the gears to maintain your pace.

Part of the drive route south of Ontario’s Blue Mountain area was rock strewn back roads with large, ominous signs warning the surface was not maintained in winter. With the five-speed, holding it in second or third was the trick and I could actually feel each wheel dig as it passed over an outcrop.

Helping was 220 mm of ground clearance, one of the highest in the segment and better than some SUVs. This, I thought, is why people buy a Subaru. In that one great snowstorm of the year, or the driving rain or just when you need it, knowing there is a proven AWD system on your side is worth it.

As for the fun part, the Crosstrek will never be a STI or BRZ, but by keeping the revs up, the potential is definitely there.

Cargo space is what CUVs buyers want and the XV has it with 632 litres (22.3 cu ft) behind the second row 60/40 split fold second row seat. That’s enough for three golf bags or a mountain bike with both wheels attached. It will tow 680 kg and carry another 68 kg on the roof.

Subaru arguably invented the crossover utility vehicle (CUV) with the first generation Forester sold here starting in 1998. The Crosstrek offers all the attributes of the Forster but in a smaller package while retaining the rock solid core Subaru design/build qualities.

Fundraising goal set at $116 million JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com United Way Toronto is looking to Torontonians to share more than their time and money this year.

The organization, which funds some 200 health and social service agencies across the city, is also asking residents to share their ideas on how to build a stronger Toronto.

Members of many of those agencies dropped by Commerce Court last Thursday as United Way Toronto unveiled its latest initiative, Imagine a City, at its annual fundraising campaign launch.

Imagine a City calls on people to go online and share ideas they feel will strengthen Toronto. United Way Toronto president and CEO Susan McIsaac will blog regularly at www. imagineacity.ca, as will 10 guest bloggers from various service agencies.

their ideas for how to build a better city,” McIsaac said.

“One of the things we’ve realized is that people out there have so many great ideas and we want to hear them.”

Guest blogger Kadeem Robin of

East Metro Youth Services – one of the United Way’s member agencies – will blog about the importance of positive role models for young people.

“Not having a role model when I was younger caused me to seek out other people to fill that role,” he said.

“I first noticed it when I was young and walking in the snow, back when Toronto got a lot of snow. I realized it was easier to walk in the footsteps of someone else.”

Robin benefited from East Metro Youth Services’ programs and now hopes to let others know of the impact they can have by being a positive role model, or simply by supporting the United Way. While the launch of Imagine a City marked a major part of the United Way’s campaign launch, the organization also unveiled its fundraising target for the coming year. United Way Toronto has set a $116 million target, $1 million more than the amount raised last year.

“We know it’s going to be tough, but the agencies we fund really, really need the money,” McIsaac said. “What they’ve told us is that the demand has increased and it’s increasingly difficult to get (outside) funding as well.”

McIsaac said agencies that provide youth services and employment services seem to have had a particularly rough go of it over the past year.

“Those agencies are under pressure and we want to give them the support they need,” she said.

Marg Campbell, executive director of Delisle Youth Services, said United

Way funding is vital to her agency’s success.

Delisle receives roughly $400,000 annually from the United Way, with the funding allowing them to offer counselling, a group home, a day treatment program, arts programming, mental health support and other services for youth across the city.

“For Delisle and the other agencies (at the launch) count on the United Way to support us and guide us in the work we do,” she said. “People need support in life and this helps us reach kids before they fall through the cracks.”

Wilson Yu, programming and personnel director at CultureLink, said United Way funding helps keep his organization afloat. Thanks in part to roughly $150,000 in funding from the United Way, CultureLink provides settlement services for new Canadians with programs ranging from mentorship to job search workshops to language assistance.

“The funding they give us is so important in helping us serve newcomers through all our programs,” he said. “We look at this as core funding.”
