St. Clair West filmmaker’s Jack Pashkovsky movie to screen at TIFF Barry Avrich’s film The Man Who Shot Hollywood screens this weekend JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Long before paparazzi became ubiquitous around Hollywood, Jack Pashkovsky was the unofficial documentarian of all things celebrity. Pashkovsky went from being a poor Russian-Jewish immigrant sweeping studio lots to rubbing elbows with the stars of his time, being sure to snap candid snapshots of them while he was at it. While he never gained much acclaim for his snapshots, they captured and humanized the stars of the Golden Age. The photographer’s story is unveiled in The Man Who Shot Hollywood, a short biopic by Toronto filmmaker Barry Avrich, which will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival. Avrich stumbled upon Pashkovsky purely by accident, but was instantly drawn to his story. “I was shooting another film when I met the guy,” Avrich said. “He had some of the most incredible Hollywood portraiture just tucked

away in his room.” Avrich said Pashkovsky showed off the hundreds of film negatives he had stashed away – candid shots the photographer had no idea what to do with. “No publicist in the world would have allowed some of these shots – pictures like Cary Grant without his tie all done up – but that’s what (Pashkovsky) got,” Avrich said. Notably, the photos were all taken
with the full cooperation of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. That’s a far cry from many paparazzi photos, where the modus operandi often seems to be catching celebrities off-guard and catching them at unflattering moments. “(Pashkovsky’s photos) really show a warmth for the subjects,” Avrich said. “Nobody shoots this way anymore. Nobody has time.” The photo collection captures
big-name stars, noted recluses and those who were famous for reasons other than the silver screen. “He got everyone from (Greta) Garbo to Gloria Swanson to Amelia Earhart, and pictures of people who never liked being shot – Cecil B. DeMille, Errol Flynn like you’ve never seen him,” Avrich said. Avrich, who lives in the St. Clair West neighbourhood area, is a veteran documentary filmmaker, and while his CV spans multiple subjects, he has made a name for himself largely through biographical works. He has profiled both the famous and the infamous, with films delving into the lives of everyone from Hollywood mogul Lew Wasserman (The Last Mogul), Penthouse magazine founder Bob Guccione (Filthy Gorgeous: The World of Bob Guccione), convicted theatre producer Garth Drabinsky (Show Stopper: The Theatrical Life of Garth Drabinsky) and others. “Selfishly, my documentaries are always about people I want to meet, living or dead,” he said. “I’m naturally interested in people who are famous, infamous, scandalous or controversial.” The Man Who Shot Hollywood will be screened at the Scotiabank Theatre at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20.

Mark 35 years of the Terry Fox Run by taking part locally W hen Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, NL on April 12, 1980, there was little fanfare and not much attention to what he was trying to do to raise money for cancer research. But as the 21-year-old Fox ran close to 42 kilometres a day despite having his leg amputated due to bone cancer, Fox’s persistence and dedication inspired more and more Canadians as the word got out about what he was doing. Now 35 years later, it’s become our view much easier to spread the word through the Internet and various Lace up and social media channels about all upcoming local run events be a part of the happening across Toronto. the challenge Just search “Terry Fox Run” and the name of your community. It won’t be difficult to find out where a local run is taking place near you. The challenge today is to not just passively retweet or ‘like’ an event, but to be one of the millions of active participants around the world who take the next step to do their part to raise funds for a cause that is still relevant to this day. While more than $650 million has been raised to date worldwide in Fox’s name, the search for a cancer cure continues. For anyone who has yet to experience a community-bonding event like the Terry Fox Run, this 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope is a great way to get involved. Or by the same technological means used to communicate with others about the run, it’s easier to make a personal donation, which can be done online at www.terryfox.org Fox didn’t intend his run to just have people cheer for him on the sidelines, but rather to join him in something greater than himself. “It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try and help others,” said Fox during his marathon. “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

Taking a stroll down TIFF’s memory lane Favourite flicks from the very first festival
I
t’s hard to believe this is already the 40th edition of TIFF. Time sure flies by when you’re stargazing. In honour of the anniversary, I thought I’d take a look at my top Canadian and American entries from the inaugural event, known way back when as the Festival of Festivals. w One League Under The Sea Talk about gala openings. TIFF took the movie industry by storm by introducing the first-ever prequel. It was the imagined foundation for the classic 1954 adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY The story line revolved around National Hockey League’s bold plans to be the first pro outfit to open a companion loop underwater. Alas, the NHL’s efforts were thwarted by a furious Moby Dick after he was turned down for the role of commissioner. w Let The Games Begin Moviegoers fondly remember Moby as the No. 1 fan favourite around town. The media highlight of the festival featured the candid superstar, who was out one night with his posse and was overheard venting to the piano player at the bar at the Windsor Arms Hotel. Whined the disgruntled Moby, “I’m sick and tired
of being typecast as a whale. I don’t even want to act anymore. What I really want to do is direct. Oh, and honey, will you be a lamb and play I’ve Got You Under My Skin? It’s for this nasty case of fleas I can’t shake. Truth is, they’re the only ones who’ve stuck with me all these years and truly understand what I’m going through.” w The Proverbial Cheque Is In The Mail She was an 11-year-old con artist with a chip on her shoulder the size of Empire State Building, who had only a 50/50 chance of making it to puberty. Eglinton West was ‘epicentre’ of reggae music, says councillor >>>from page 1 tory. “In the 1970s and 80s, in this stretch, where the lane runs, there were countless record stores, recording studios, performers living, hanging out there,” Colle said. “It really was the epicentre of reggae music. Pretty much outside of Kingston, Jamaica, Eglinton West was the spot in the world.” The Laneway Project is working with local citizens and groups, including the York-Eglinton BIA, to revitalize Reggae Lane. The STEPS Initiative worked with a local artist to install a new reggae-themed mural at the site. Attendees to the celebration will be given a tour of the laneway, which will highlight some of the potential improvements planned for it, hear live reggae music, see performances and enjoy some Jamaican patties. There will also be cake and ribbon
cutting. Toronto has one of the largest Jamaican populations in the world outside of Jamaica, and in the 70s and 80s, the area was a thriving hub for reggae music. Toronto reggae singer-songwriter Jay Douglas, is expected to perform his original Reggae Lane song at the celebration. He’s also just one of several new Toronto Reggae Hall of Fame inductees expected to attend the event. A Reggae Lane Heritage plaque will also be installed during the event. “This celebration will just be a fun time,” Colle said, saying there will be great music, food and more. The celebration runs from 4 to 7 p.m. The ribbon cutting is at 5 p.m. Live music is at 6 p.m.

Olympic decision shows civic prudence The roof of the burger joint at Nathan Phillips Square turns out to be a pretty good place to hold a press conference. If the weather’s right, it affords a view of Toronto City Hall that is quite inspiring – the sort of sight that underscores bold visions of civic greatness. On Tuesday morning, Mayor John Tory used the spot for a press conference for a rather different kind of announcement: one of sensible aspirations for civic prudence. It was a good fit. We are not, Tory told Toronto, going to make a play for the 2024 Summer Games. Timelines are short, competition is stiff, and there are better things with which to occupy our time than jockeying for the right to foot the bill for a massive international Olympic event. This was something of a shift from the signals Tory had been sending out in the early days of September, meeting privately with leaders in business and politics and sports, councillors and community representatives, speaking
david nickle the city with nothing but optimism when cornered by cameras and reporters. Tory’s reversal based on precedent was nothing short of seismic. Earlier in the summer I based a rather inaccurate prediction on this matter on exactly that precedent: that when faced with an opportunity to lead with its jaw in a fight outside its weight class, Toronto’s political leadership cannot resist. I am quite happy to see that my rather cynical assessment was incorrect. Tory seems happy too, based on his answer to a reporter’s question: “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments and getting them to make the investments
that should be made,” he said. “We do have real problems for the people who live here today.” If it’s possible to put an even brighter face on Tuesday’s announcement, consider this: for the first time since the election, Tory and former mayor and Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford have found themselves in agreement. Doubtless this is not Ford’s doing: he clearly misread Tory’s earlier signals as badly as I did, and took a consistently contrarian view with a slightly less sunny argument: hosting the Games is too expensive and we ought not try. On this, Tory and Ford seem to differ. At some point, Tory said, Toronto might bid for an Olympic Summer Games, or something else. In the meantime, Toronto should get to work on its tangible future and demand to be treated as something more than a good place to throw a party.

St. Clair Avenue West Transportation Master Plan Between Keele Street & Old Weston Road Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Notice of Study Commencement Study Overview
The City ofToronto is carrying out aTransportation Master Plan (TMP) identifying area-wide infrastructure improvements to address traffic congestion on the section of St. Clair Avenue West between Keele Street and Old Weston Road. This study builds on the 2015 St Clair Avenue West Underpass Study which identified potential improvements in relation to the Kitchener rail corridor such as: • Extending Gunns Road east • Widening St. Clair Avenue West • Extending Davenport Road west • Extending Keele Street south to Davenport Road
What is a Master Plan
It is a study that examines the infrastructure needs (e.g., roads, bridges, storms sewers) within a geographic area and provides a framework for the implementation of the recommended projects over a period of time. ATMP will be completed to evaluate and select infrastructure improvements and outline an implementation strategy.TheTMP will document all four phases of the Schedule C Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. This includes the opportunity for public input.

City to roll out ‘Please Slow Down’ signs for residents Signs can be used on public right-of-ways until Nov. 30
Council. For his part, EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Justin Di Ciano was critical of the late launch of the transportation campaign, which will see each of the city’s 44 councillors receive between 300 and 500 of the signs, to be distributed free-of-charge to residents upon request.

losing daylight
Toronto’s Transportation Services division has unveiled its new “Please Slow Down” lawn signs, to be made available to residents across the city in mid-October as part of a $40,000-Fall Safety Awareness Campaign. West-end councillors got a sneak peek at the 61-by-51 centimetre, yellow-and-black signs – which consist of a metal wire frame inside of recyclable plastic material – at last Tuesday’s meeting of the Etobicoke York Community
“My concern is this: the horses have left the barn, because by the time these signs get to us, daylight is quickly evaporating in the fall season and I don’t know a lot of kids that play in the dark,” he said. “If they were to come this week and we could have them for the remainder of the daylight time we have after school, it would be more beneficial. That’s why my office has already printed our own

signs and Councillor (Mark) Grimes has already printed his own signs.” Transportation staff noted, however, that the “Please Slow Down” signs are intended to be re-useable and will be permitted to be on display on public right-of-ways from April 1 to Nov. 30 each year. “These signs are to be used as a communication tool to motorists in addressing residents’ concerns regarding speeding on their street,” Transportation Services noted in its report on the signs. The estimated manufacturing cost is expected to be between $2 to $3 per sign, for a total campaign budget of around $40,000 – funds that are included within Transportation Services’ 2015 operating budget.

Festival also features films, workshops >>>from page 1 or neophyte, McClusky promises something for everyone at the event, which takes place Sunday at its new location, the A r t s c a p e Wyc h w o o d Barns. Local chefs will prepare such garlic-inspired dishes as slow cooked ribs in black garlic beer sauce, roasted Ontario corn with garlic and basil butter, homemade roast garlic marshmallows toasted on the spot, and black garlic butter tarts, among others. “You’ll have a totally different idea of the festival than what your first experience will be,” McClusky told The Guardian. “You can come, stuff your face, watch a film, or sit in on a workshop.” Festival-goers will once again get the opportunity to stock up on their winter’s supply of fresh garlic, check out cooking demonstrations and presentations, while taking in live music for the duration of the event. As many as 5,000 people visit the garlic festival each year. “It really blew me away,” McClusky said. “I thought (the festival) was a good idea, but the proof is in the pudding.” Rather, it’s the garlic that’s the main attraction, something McClusky has been aware of especially
since 2009 when he began growing the bulbous plant. “I’ve loved cooking all my life, but I’d never experienced it before 2009,” McClusky admitted. In his first year, he grew 1,000 garlic plants and since then has grown as many as 25,000. With his hands in the dirt, working on a couple of farms, one in Brampton and another near Guelph, he came up with the idea for the festival. Fo r t w o d e c a d e s , McClusky worked in marketing in New York. He loved the job and the people and had the freedom to create his own schedule, and yet, he had a nagging feeling he should be doing something else with his life. Retiring in 2009, McClusky returned to Toronto and soon began his farming career at Farm Start, whose mission is to “encourage and support a new generation of entrepreneurial, ecological farmers.” “From there, I planted my own garlic,” McClusky recalled. “It was beautifully coloured. It looked different and tasted different than I had ever tasted,” he said. “I had other people taste my garlic and they were really blown away by it.” After four years, the festival has changed loca-
tions to Artscape Wychwood Barns, a much more accessible spot. This year’s installment will screen the documentary Food Fighters, that delves into how communities are coming together with urban agriculture initiatives and local food businesses to create food security. Sixty vendors will be selling a variety of garlic, including rare and heirloom varieties; garlic jellies and jams, relish and dips, fresh herbs and specialty items, and garlic paraphernalia. Artscape Wychwood Barns is at 601 Christie St.
