Barbara Goodwin Zeibots Head of The York School This year 1998-1999 York has experienced the move from 65 Sheldrake Boulevard, where we were housed at Eglinton United Church, to "a home of our own" at 1320 Yonge Street. Our new midtown Toronto location is simply wonderful! It has been worth the 33 year wait. The four floors of our red brick building are now alive with almost 400 students from grade 1 to grade 12. One hundred new students joined York this year along with 12 new faculty members. The 1999 edition of Perspective gives us an excellent picture of this story. It is a huge amount of work to put these pages together. Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Mason worked with: Kathryn Lennard, Lisa Gutierrez, Marie-Claire Bark, Andrea Buczko, Andrea Mori, Ashley Coles, Alisha Khatau, Sarah Watson, Jessica Kaplan, Ben Freedman and Anthony lncardona. They received our thanks for their dedication to this task. I hope you will enjoy this historical perspective as much as I do.

Marilyn Andrews Vice-Principal/Director of Admissions Well . .. we are more than half-way through our first full year at 1320 Yonge Street and not once have I even given a fleeting thought to our "old" location on Sheldrake. A "Home of our Own" has been such a wonderful fit路 it's bright, efficient, shiny clean and feels just like a real school should feel! However, the building only comes to life in combination with a superb curriculum delivered by a remarkable group of teachers to the greatest kids in the entire world! The York School has become a very hot topic wherever independent schools are being discussed and whenever parents are looking for the very best in elementary and secondary programmes. By the time you read this, the school year is over for me and I am well into our plans for next year. All because of the enthusiastic efforts of Ora Chandler, Susan Mason and Jill Alexander, those of us who are growing older and more forgetful can be continually reminded of all of the extraordinary things that happen around the school in a typical year . . . and this past year has been anything but typical! It's good to sit back every once in a while and gain a bit of PERSPECTIVE on life in general.

I have been at York since I was 3. Over the years I have made many friends. I have played on sports teams and learned many interesting things in class. Thanks for the fun and interesting years.

The play "On Broadwayâ&#x20AC;˘ was the high point in the year for me. It was spectacular and I will remember it forever! Through the good and bad I have always been able to finish work, contribute to class and make everyone laugh.

Before coming to York three years ago I lived in Spain. I have learned many things through my experiences at York, including how to read and write in English. I have made good friends and enjoyed playing soccer and softball.

Hi! My name is Diana. I am 13 years old. I've been at York for 9 years. ! play the trumpet in a concert and a jazz band. I play badminton, softball and basketball too! I want to say that this school saved me from my old school which frankly was getting bad. Here at York I was 1n two bands and the "On Broadway" production . I had my f1rst male teachers. I need to work on disciplinmg my路 self to s1t down and work. Thanks to Mom for getting me here.

IB PROGRAM

Our inauguraiiB class has made it to the end of the year and is coming back for more! It has been an exciting learning experience for all of us - teachers included - as we tackle the challenges of this enriched curriculum. Our ten IB students have been engaged in stimulating discussions, extensive research, thoughtful writing (in two languages) and are acquiring invaluable skills which will prepare them well for their post-secondary education. These students are halfway through their six IB courses selected from English, French, History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Art and Theory of Knowledge, earning Ontario credits at the same time. They have also continued their participation in creative, athletic and service activities. We wish these hard-working students a restful summer (don't forget your Extended Essay!), and we'll all be ready to "hit the deck running" in September for year 2.

In September the grade seven classes went to Humber Arboretum as part of our community work. When we went there we pulled out bulrushes in an overgrown area so the animals would have more water to drink. Also on our trip we took a nature hike to learn about the trees and the wildlife habitat. Another thing we learned about was ecosystems and how they worked . It was a lot of hard work, but it was a lot of fun .

During th1s time they went to an orienteering s1te where they learned how to use a compass and find their way from one pole to the next pole. They also went on a geomorphology hike which was long and a b1t cold. The guide pornted out many thrngs that were learnrng about in school such as old fault lrnes and glacier tra1ls . The grade sevens also learned to ident1fy different types of trees. Whrle there they also held a dance for fun on the last nrght. The trip to the Leslie M. Frost Centre was very enlightening.

with grade 9 In September the Grade 9's went to Tawingo, near Huntsville, for a week of "bonding". This experience has been a qu1te successful initiation mto the h1gh school. New fnendships were made, old friendship sohd1fied and the New York students quickly made to feel at home. Activ1ties included a night hike m the pitch dark; an overnight trip 路 the girls were fortunate to bunk out in a tree house!; initiative games where you really need to trust your fnends in order to climb "that wall"; a skit night and many other enjoyable activities.

The York School grade nine students travelled to Ottawa, Canada on a History and Visual Arts trip to explore the capitol's sites of interest. The trip was a great success, as it was educational and fun. Highlights of the trip included visiting The National Gallery of Art, The Museum of Civilization, The War Museum, Parliament Hill, The Supreme Court of Canada, The Crystal Gardens, and skating on the Rideau Canal.

Twenty-six talented actors from grades 6, 7, and 8 presented the smash musical "On Broadway" at the York Woods Theatre in January for two sold out performances. The troupe then packed up and headed to Montreal to perform at Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's (E.C.S.) School and participated in a joint drama workshop with E.C.S. students. The reviews were incredible and the cast had a great time exploring Montreal. Congratulations to all the cast members!
