PERSPECTIVE 2000-2001 1
Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots Head of the York School PERSPECTIVE is such a wonderful surprise each June. All the students pour over the contents to see their picture and all the wonderful shots of activities that take place in this school on a yearly basis. From Earth Day, the spring Art Show, Museum Day, Graduation, Terry Fox to many, many other exciting events The York School is the place to be!!! This compilation of What's on at York is great and a great deal of work for those staff members that put it together. Many thanks to Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Mason, and Mme. Almeida.

As usual, it's the "eleventh" hour, the deadline for my yearbook submission is 3:00pm today and I (the one who never stops talking) am rendered quite speechless! In the past few years, I have come to realize that a school yearbook is the single most important document for providing prospective York families with a sense of what actually happens here at the school. Of course, they want to look at the curriculum, they are unfailingly bedazzled by the Math Handbook, they love visiting the classrooms in action and they have lots and lots of questions, but the yearbook says it all in words and pictures. Enjoy Perspective '01 and enjoy your summer!

THE LOWER SCHOOL The day outside may be dull, dismal, and grey, but The York Lower School is vibrating with energy, enthusiasm and colour. Hanging from the ceiling of the second floor hallway are the vibrant, sinuous snakes used to help us celebrate the best Chinese New Year ever. These were made by the grade four students under the tutelage of Janet Stinson our (almost) resident artist parent and mother of Madeleine Oswald in grade three. The IBPYP is in full swing and I am constantly greeted by the work in the classrooms which demonstrates the creativity, enthusiasm, and energetic inquiry of both students and teachers. The grade ones are identifying the elements of fairy tales with erudition and depth of thinking; the grade twos are debating the issues of potential and kinetic energy and hypothesizing about the variables that will aid their shoebox cars to travel the furthest distance; the grade threes are dissecting any flower they can find. (I feared for the plants loaned from my office, but they were returned safely.) At the same time they are reflecting on the preservation of plant life in our world today, including the Don Valley. The grade fours, having left Utopia behind, alas are moving into the world of ancient civilizations and will, no doubt, be enticing us to follow them. The grade fives are looking at the structure of our government and I anticipate that they will have sage advice and searching questions for our local representatives. The grade sixes having survived, with glowing colours, their Survival Unit of Inquiry are moving into the study of the Canadian mosaic and multiculturalism with a multitude of insightful questions and a variety of field trips. As the year continues with its changing seasons, I can only marvel, my first year out of the classroom and in my full-time position as Head of the Lower School, at the level of learning and the depth of understanding that our students achieve under the care and nurturing of their teachers. I look forward to the rest of the year and whatever that may bring in terms of new learning, new events, and the constant growth and vitality which permeates our school. Barbara Galbraith

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL Dianne Dowman Academic Head of Technology This year has been an exciting one to be involved in Information Technology at York as computer use has expanded throughout the school and involves all of our community. Students have had increased access to curriculum-integrated activities ranging from internet research, graphics programs and multimedia presentations to specialized software for geography, math and music. A new e-mail package and additions to the school web site have increased communication and efficiency both within our school building and to our extended community. Our middle school has led the way with their integrated laptop use operating on a wireless LAN and ensuring that these students are prepared for the future . We are proud of our commitment to technology and will continue to embrace new ideas that enhance learning experiences for our students.
42
Susan Charron Head of the Middle School The Middle School at York is bigger and stronger than ever in the new millennium. We added a third grade seven class this fall bringing our numbers to an even one hundred. This was also the year we launched the laptop integration program at the grade seven and eight level, which has proved to be an overwhelming success. We also initiated changes to our House system that involves having eight House Captains from grade eight who are in charge of House points, House challenges, special events and fund raisers, and House assemblies. They ran a very successful United Way Campaign in the fall, organized a fund raiser for children in Guyana, and had everyone come to school in House Colours and pajamas! In the fall, the grade sevens were off to Dorset for three days of outdoor education relating to their geography and science curriculums. The grade eights were immersed in French language and culture as they spent four days in Quebec during Winter Carnival. To complement the English program, the students went to Stratford in the fall and to Ryerson Theatre in the spring. Many of our Middle School students were involved in the school production of Fiddler on the Roof in February. As we grew in numbers, we also grew in strength on the athletic front. Our teams were a force to be reckoned with! The students in the Middle School are busy, productive people who are involved in extra curricular activities while striving for excellence in a challenging and demanding curriculum. Their success at the York School is in no small way a measure of the commitment and dedication of the Middle School teachers to each and every student. Thank you everyone for an exciting and successful year,

I've been here for 2 years and even though the academics are hard I have made new friends that I'll have for the rest of my life. Even though it is hard the trips are fun and new experiences. I'm having a great time at York and I think I'm going to stay for a while. I'm going to miss all my friends that are leaving because York won't be York without them.
I've been a part of The York School for almost two years. So far I've enjoyed it a lot more than my other schools. I made a lot of new friends and learned a lot, particularly about laptops and computers in general. DORSET 2000 Grade 7 Trip to Dorset Early one chilly October morning sixty eager and excited grade seven students boarded the coaches for the journey to the Leslie M. Frost Centre in the Haliburton Highlands. Thus began three days of fun, learning and adventure. Curriculum related activities included a four-kilometer hike to study the geomorphology of the area, a watershed simulation, meadow mapping exercises, and orienteering with calculators and compasses. Equally exciting were the extra-curricular activities ranging from sports activities, a lapidary session and a dance. On a third afternoon as everyone scrambled for the best seats on the returning bus, there were many who wished this time together could have continued just a bit longer.

York's U14 Girls Clinch Third in National Tournament The York basketball program has done it again! In previous issues of The Voice it was mentioned that the York School Girls U14 basketball team had an undefeated season. They finished with an undefeated record along with being rewarded with the right to go to a national basketball competition in Montreal. Representing the York School, there were some high expectations for these young girls. Heading into the round-robin tournament fantastic results were predicted. The pool was the toughest in the tournament, consisting of the heavy favorite BSS. The Under 14 team placed an incredible third in their pool and were able to advance to the playoff round of the tournament. After a fantastic quarter final round, the York Under 14 team faced a tougher challenger in the semi-finals, the heavily favored BSS. In a hard fought game and without letting BSS score in the last fifteen
minutes, the Under 14 girls lost by a mere three points. In the end, BSS did win the championship but York's girls finished in a respectable 3rd place out of a twenty-team tournament. When asked about how she felt about her team's success, head coach Mrs. Wilson mentioned that "Every player played their best basketball ever. The fast break and press worked perfectly." Last year it was the Boys Under 13 team and this year it was the Girls Under 14 team and with two great successful runs in two seasons, it seems that the York basketball program is moving in the right direction.
