MESSAGE FROM WARREN BONGARD CHAIR OF THE BOARD

I am pleased to report the Board of Directors’ Annual Report for the 2013 – 2014 school year. The York School has seen continued growth this year, and made significant developments to enrich the lives of our students and our school community. In my second year serving as Chair of the Board, I participated in the Finance, Governance, Premises and Advancement committee meetings. I can attest to the hard work of this Board, its committees and all of the volunteers who ensure that the school is well managed and clearly directed. My thanks to Vice Chair, Ann Glazier Rothwell, and past Chair, Stephen Karam, for their continuing guidance and support. I also served as Co-chair of the Strategic Plan Steering Committee with Head of School, Conor Jones. This committee consisted of Board members, current York School parents, faculty and staff. The committee – supported by consultant Susan Wright – engaged a broad spectrum of our community including current students, alumni, past parents and over 400 voices through surveys, focus groups and professional development sessions. The Board held two sessions specifically on the strategic plan and met regularly during the process. The final plan was accepted in principle at the 2

June Board meeting, and will roll out to the community in various communications this year. In his third year as Head of School, Conor’s leadership is evident in all aspects of the school’s continuing growth and success. The strategic plan process confirmed that, under his guidance, the school is meeting the expectations of our community. The strategic plan provides a confirmation of our current direction, and will provide guidance for the Board, Conor and his staff over the next five years. Our enrolment numbers were strong and consistent for the 2013 – 14 school year. In June 2013, we had 591 students registered. By the start of school in September, we had 601 students registered with 102 of them being new. By the end of the school year, our enrolment was 624. We started the year with Grades 4, 7, 10, 11 and 12 at capacity, which reflects the demand at these grade levels. During the year, additional

admissions moved us to capacity for Grade 3 as well. A growth in the JK/SK population bodes well for future growth, after several years of weaker enrolment numbers at this level. We experienced an increase in international enrolments with 43 percent of new students coming from outside Canada in 2013 –14. The interest in The York School as a destination for relocating families is an area of growth and a trend we continue to monitor. Thanks to our dedicated community, over $450,000 was raised through the Annual Fund and from events in the 2013 – 14 fiscal year. These funds directly enrich student life by providing important support for our educational and co-curricular programmes. Areas funded in 2013 – 14 included improved student recreational space at both locations, the increased presence of community coaches in Athletics, the creation of a film studio in support of the new Diploma Film Studies Programme, continued support of student-initiated ‘green’ alternatives and much more. The Advancement team also worked with over 140 parent volunteers who donated more than 4,100 hours of their time to run over 50 successful events throughout the year. On behalf of the Board, I thank The York School community, parents and alumni for their support and participation in the life of the school. I also thank the current and past members of the Advancement Committee for their dedication and leadership.

The 2013 – 14 year saw great academic success at every level. One hundred percent of students attempting the International Baccalaureate Diploma received it, with our average matching the historic high of 33 points. We were particularly thrilled to have achieved excellent results in our most recent additions to the IB offerings: Film Studies and Mandarin. Our graduating class of 54 students gained admission to a wide variety of schools both at home and abroad, including the University of Arizona, the University of St. Andrews (Scotland), Boston College, Brown University, the University of Michigan, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Southern California. This year, the Middle Years Programme received commendations in the accreditation process from the IB Organization. The visiting committee noted our strength of programme, quality of instruction and commitment to providing an exceptional experience for our students. Our Middle School had a stellar second year under Principal Helen Gin. Her vision focusing on the social needs of our Middle School students has made a difference in the daily experiences of our Grade 6, 7 and 8 students. Co-curricular programming has been enhanced with Middle School-focused assemblies, house challenges and clubs and committees that are developmentally appropriate. We introduced elective courses in Mandarin, Vocal Music, Spanish 3

and Drama, which were received well by students. With a continued focus on Learning Skills, our students are well prepared for what is to come. The academic programme focus has been to nurture each student’s personal best. To support this, the Middle School Closing Ceremony was revamped to highlight the learning and achievements of all students with grade-level speeches and art performances, and by recognizing those students who embodied excellence in the area of academics, leadership, spirit, athletics and citizenship. This year marked Susan Charron’s last year as Junior School Principal with her planned retirement in June of 2014. Susan’s retirement was celebrated in style, and the community raised funds to add a piece of playground equipment in her name. Jennifer Wyatt follows as Principal after two years of work with Susan and our community. Susan continued to work closely with Jennifer, delegating principalspecific duties such as class placements, report card editing and teacher evaluation, and Jennifer assisted the teachers as they implemented the revised mathematics curriculum. The focus for professional development in the 2013 – 14 year was writing, after successful changes in reading assessment and instruction. In June 2013, Rick DeMarinis was appointed Director of Athletics for JK to Grade 12. In his first year in the role, it is clear that the transition has been successful. 4

Rick’s plans to reinvigorate the athletics programme are well underway. Ninety-five percent of students in JK to Grade 5 participated in our Sports Development Clinics, and 90 percent of eligible students participated on Under 10 and Under 11 competitive teams. This was an extremely strong year for participation at the Junior School, and it speaks to the importance The York School places on developing fundamental skills and a healthy active lifestyle from a young age. At the Middle and Senior Schools, students played on 39 competitive teams, and student participation was approximately 75 percent. One of the highlights of the year was the Senior Ultimate Frisbee team winning their fourth consecutive CISAA Division 1 Championship. It was a strong year for our student athletes, and we look forward to future successes. The 2013 – 14 school year saw many changes in Learning, Innovation and Technology including the restructuring of the department to include both the Junior and Senior School libraries. This change resulted in the standardization of tools and services, and has put new budget oversights in place. On the academic side, new initiatives were implemented. The York School piloted a new system called “Hapara,” which delivers teachers a dashboard view of all student activity in the Google system. This tool was incredibly well received, and will result in a school-wide implementation for the following year. A one-to-one Chromebook

project was implemented in Grade 5 allowing students to experience a new level of access to technology across the curriculum. Running on the Google system, these new computers transformed day-to-day learning and culminated with the Grade 5 Exhibition going entirely paperless. Students in the Senior School also saw the introduction of the MAC integration pilot project. For the first time ever, interested students could bring a MAC to school. The pilot was successful and for the next school year we will offer a choice of models in Grades 9 – 12. The 2013 –14 year brought two department audits. An external consultant was brought in to audit the DRP (Disaster Response Plan) and the overall network to help with strategic budgeting and planning. Some significant infrastructural upgrades will be implemented as a result. It has been a very successful year with many exciting changes for The York School. My thanks to all of our Board members and the many parent volunteers who have generously donated their time and energy in support of our school’s ongoing mission.

MESSAGE FROM CONOR JONES HEAD OF SCHOOL

2013 – 2014 has been an exciting year for The York School, uniting the success we have had thus far with preparation for our school’s future through the development of our new Strategic Plan. From this report and the remarks from both Warren Bongard, Chair of the Board, and Andrew Kay, Chair of the Finance Committee, it is clear that we continue to stand on sound financial ground, and have made a number of significant developments that have, and will, enrich the lives of our students and our York School community for years to come. Next year marks the occasion of our 50th anniversary. While I look ahead to our future, I must also call on our past. The York School’s long tradition of innovation is part of what makes us unique, and I am grateful for the capable Founders who carved this path of success in their own planning process. I am also grateful for our generous and supportive students, alumni and parents – both past and present – who have helped us get to where we stand today. Throughout this year’s strategic planning process, it was important that we consult each of these stakeholder groups to ensure that all parties have an equal voice in the future of our school. I am thankful that we have such an engaged community to call on, and I believe that under the guidance of this 6

new strategic plan, the next five years will have a significant and meaningful impact in the history of The York School. Each day, I look around the school and I am reminded of our mission. The York School is filled with passionate and dedicated faculty and staff who breathe life into their lessons through real-world experience that extends far beyond the classroom. While this annual report provides clarity around the school’s financial progress and oversight, it is truly the spirit, energy and enthusiasm of our students that indicates that we are on the right track. Our real measure of success lies within the inquiring, knowledgeable and caring students who have and will become engaged citizens of the world. Sincerely,

Conor Jones Head of School

MESSAGE FROM ANDREW KAY CHAIR OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

2013 – 2014 has been another successful financial year for The York School. Under the leadership of Conor Jones, both the school and its students have continued to thrive, and we are well positioned for a healthy financial future. The fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 saw few changes in operations. This is reflected in the overall financial statements, and is partially due to the development of our strategic plan, which led us to maintain operations while setting our priorities for the next five years. Innovation and technology remain two important areas of focus for the school. With the launch of a newly designed website, a variety of online educational systems and tools, and the use of Chromebooks and MACs in classrooms, The York School aims to be an industry leader in connected education. We also continue to support the growth of our Athletics department under the direction of Rick DeMarinis, with this year proving to be one of the most successful years in the athletic history of the school. Other enhancements supported by The Annual Fund have included an increased number of community coaches in Athletics, improved student recreational space at both locations, the creation of a film studio in support 8

of the school’s Film Studies Programme and the continued support of green initiatives. Our enrolment numbers were high, with a total of 624 students enrolled at the end of the 2013 – 2014 school year, with many grades reaching their capacity. As we forge ahead, we will continue to base tuition fees on the operating costs of the school while remaining competitive with other GTA independent schools. Balance Sheet The financial position of The York School is strong and reflects our prudent financial management. Assets have decreased as excess cash was used to pay down our mortgage in order to reduce interest costs. Capital assets have also declined due to another year of amortization, which was not offset by incremental capital purchases. Liabilities have remained consistent year over year with a

The York School’s Annual Pinewood Derby

decrease in accounts payable being offset by an increase in prepaid fees. There is a slight increase in deferred donations due to restricted funds received this year for the Athletic Fund, professional development and the Grad Gift. As noted above, the mortgage has also been temporarily paid down, reducing our debt from $7.7M to $5.5M. Revenues For 2013 – 14, revenue from all sources was $19.9M. This balance is primarily a result of our strong enrolment as well as the generosity of our community. Expenses Expenses have decreased by 2 percent from the prior year due to a small decrease in salaries as well as decreasing amortization.

Consistent with prior years, teaching salaries and benefits are the largest single expense of the school. We are committed to providing a quality education, and this area will remain a significant item. Conclusion In closing, our financial standing is healthy, and our financial team continues to ensure we control costs and plan for the future while providing resources to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff. Respectfully submitted,

Andrew Kay Chair, Finance Committee

MESSAGE FROM LYNN CLARFIELD CHAIR OF THE ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank The York School community for their continued support and participation in the life of the school. Philanthropic donations and volunteerism help make The York School a place where students have many significant experiences and opportunities. The mandate of Advancement at The York School is to support the school’s mission of developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are engaged citizens of the world, as well as to support the many endeavours undertaken by York School students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff in pursuit of this goal. In 2013 – 2014 we again held over 50 related community events and had over 150 volunteers who served over 4,100 hours in support of the school. Our community’s commitment is also reflected in the over $455,000 donated in 2013 – 2014, which fund improvements inside and beyond the classroom for all students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. The York School community has provided professional development for our dedicated faculty, improved student spaces such as the film studio, integrated 12

innovative technologies into the classroom and challenged students by exposing them to global ideas and guest speakers. I must also take this opportunity to thank the current and past members of the Advancement Committee for their dedication and leadership, and offer my best wishes to the 2014 – 2015 Advancement Committee. Sincerely,

MESSAGE FROM LESLIE GILLER YPA PRESIDENT

Dear Parents and York School Community, The York Parents’ Association (YPA) filled the 2013 – 2014 year with a number of school events for both the student and parent communities. This was my last year as YPA President, and I thank the fantastic York School parents, grandparents, caregivers, past parents, alumni and students for their involvement and commitment to the school. The goals of the YPA are to promote a strong, cooperative and welcoming parent and student community, and to oversee events which increase school spirit and camaraderie, both at the student and the parent community level. Over the past year we had more than 150 volunteers providing over 4,100 hours of their time to help the YPA achieve these goals. With the help of these volunteers, the YPA had a year full of events for parents and students, starting with a speaker panel from CAMH and many subsequent events including Junior School and Middle School Movie Nights at the Regent Theatre, a Halloween event at the Junior School, three highly successful Breakfast with Dad mornings (the second annual event that is quickly 14

becoming a favourite!), a Junior School Social, a Second Hand Uniform Sale, the “Night on the Town” Gala and our two year end Fun Fairs. In addition to hosting Grade Parent Parties, Parent Coffee Mornings and managing the Treats for Teachers programme, the YPA also provided financial and volunteer support for Literary Night at Indigo, organized holiday decorations at both sites, supported Sports Day and the Middle School Dance and made a financial contribution at our well attended Grandparents & Special Friends’ event and at the Grade 12 Graduation Dinner. All of these events and activities support our students and wider community, and would not be possible without the commitment and hard work of our parent volunteers who are essential to the success

of our children at The York School. I encourage your unique contributions of ideas, talents and time to the YPA. Please consider any one or more of the many opportunities to join the YPA and become involved in The York School community.

Tuition covers about 90% of a York School education. The Annual Fund covers the rest.

On behalf of the YPA, I thank you for your continued support.

Give now to receive a 2014 tax receipt.
