Welcome from the Chair of the Board of Directors

A

s Chair of the Board of Directors, I congratulate

you on selecting an excellent school for your son or daughter’s education. I am actively connected to the school as a long time parent and committed Board Member. You have joined a wonderful school that continues to lead as the top co-educational International Baccalaureate school in Toronto while remaining financially stable, effectively governed and focused on the student experience. Last year we celebrated our 50th anniversary, and launched the Fast Forward building project. As you join us this year you will notice renovations being made to the Middle and Senior School to improve the quality of education and opportunities for our children. There has never been a more exciting time to be part of this community and I hope you will join us as we work to have 100% participation in our Fast Forward capital campaign to support the renovation. Our globally-minded school ensures that our students emerge ready to ‘take on the world.’ I trust that this package will ensure your journey gets off to the right start. Sincerely,

Tim Thorsteinson Chair of the Board of Directors

Welcome from the Head of School

W

elcome to The York School! You have joined a

wonderful community. Over the next few years you will celebrate achievements, enjoy sporting and cultural events, and join with other families as you make friends and become part of the fabric of The York School. Many years ago there was a popular series of books, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, that had an illustration on the front cover of a button and the words: Don’t Panic. In some ways this welcome package should provide the same level of comfort – don’t panic – all will be well. This package provides you with some key information to get you off to a great start. There is a lot of information here, but it is organized and colour coded by division, Junior, Middle and Senior School. You can focus on the grade into which your child is entering and use the Table of Contents to guide your search. We will be in touch again in July and August with summer issues of the “Friday Flash,” our weekly electronic newsletter. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know your family!

Sincerely,

Conor Jones Head of School /5

We are excited to have you join The York School; and, if you are currently a York School parent, we are delighted that you have chosen to continue the York School tradition in your family! You will likely have a number of questions as we approach September. This Welcome Package should get you off to a great start. We look forward to seeing you in September; please know that we here to help support your transition in any way we can. Sincerely,

Praveen Muruganandan Director of Strategic Enrolment Management 416-926-1325 ext. 1129 pmuruganandan@yorkschool.com /6

Welcome from the Director of Advancement It is my pleasure to welcome you to The York School community. The York School has enjoyed continual growth thanks to our dedicated group of parents – both past and present – alumni and friends of the school. Each year, our community generously commits the time, expertise and financial support required to succeed in our mission of developing knowledgeable and engaged citizens of the world. One of the driving forces of The York School’s success is our highly dedicated and talented volunteers. In this Welcome Package, you will find information on volunteering and other ways in which you can support the school. This is a particularly exciting year as we are in the midst of the Fast Forward capital campaign to renovate the Middle and Senior School. There is a wide range of opportunity for parent involvement and support. If you have any questions on how you can contribute, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely,

Judy MacGowan, CFRE Director of Advancement 416-926-1325 ext. 1192 jmacgowan@yorkschool.com

Fast Forward Building Project In December 2015, The York School launched the Fast Forward capital campaign to fund the renovation of the Middle and Senior School located at 1320 Yonge Street. With a budget of $13.2M, The York School has undertaken a capital campaign to raise $5M through support from our community. Our Board of Directors led the launch of the campaign with nearly $2M in leadership gifts. Our community members have been invited to join The 1320 Challenge by making a one time donation or a 5-year pledge of $1,320, $132 or any level that is meaningful and achievable for their family. Cumulative donations of $6,600+ will be recognized on a 3-D printed donor wall in the building’s new Gathering Place. Phase I of construction began during the 2016 March Break. Over the summer, the second and third floors of the school will be renovated to include a new Art and Design Wing as well as four new classrooms. During the 2016-2017 school year, the first two floors of the school will be closed off to expedite the renovation. Three additional temporary classrooms will be located under the gym until the launch of the entire space in fall 2017. We hope every new family will consider making a contribution to the Fast Forward campaign this year. This building project will have a lasting impact on the experience of our Middle and Senior School students for years to come. Please visit the Fast Forward website regularly to stay up-to-date with the campaign and build progress. It is going to be an exciting year at The York School and we appreciate your trust and long-term commitment to build for our future! For more information on the Fast Foward building project or to make a pledge to the 1320 Challenge, please contact: Judy MacGowan, CFRE Director of Advancement 416-926-1325 ext. 1192 jmacgowan@yorkschool.com

Advancement The Advancement Department The Advancement Department focuses on raising funds to support students and faculty, and on building a thriving community at The York School. The department organizes fundraising campaigns and works closely with parent and alumni volunteers to develop community building initiatives. Donations benefit each and every student who attends The York School. Continuing this tradition of philanthropy carries forward these enhancements to future students at the school. We are grateful to the number of individuals who have given to create such a rich educational experience for our current students. The Annual Fund Tuition alone does not fully cover the cost of a York School education. Annual Fund donations raised each year help cover costs that surpass tuition fees; the generosity of our donor community provides immediate benefits for students and faculty, such as technology advancements, the chance to learn from seasoned experts, facility improvements and abundant co-curricular opportunities. Beginning in October, parents are asked to support the Annual Fund programme for the academic year. All gifts are tax receiptable and directly impact the student experience at The York School.

Advancement Volunteering Our parent community is an amazing group. Parent volunteers are at the school every day, running events and helping to build our school spirit and sense of community. Volunteering any amount of time is one of the most valuable ways in which you can get involved in supporting your child’s education. It is also a wonderful way to meet new people within the community. There are many ways you can get involved as a new parent: the York Parents’ Association (YPA); the York International Parents’ Association (YIPA); the Board of Directors; Event Committees; Class Parent representatives; library volunteers; or as an event volunteer. The Parent Volunteer Handbook for 2016-2017 will be available to you in August. It outlines the many volunteer opportunities available for parents. We hope you join this dynamic community as we work together towards building a remarkable school and school community. For more information about being a parent volunteer at The York School, please contact: advancement@yorkschool.com. Please visit us at http://www.yorkschool.com/about/support

Financial Information Statements of Account Statements of account are set up for each student and rendered periodically throughout the year. They reflect not only the fee instalments, but also additional costs for books, the York Shop and cafeteria purchases, YPA membership, yearbook, supplies, cultural and sporting activities, etc. These costs vary widely among students due to different levels of participation in athletic, outdoor, and cultural activities, as well as spending habits. All statements are due upon receipt. Please contact the Business Office if you do not wish your child to have York Shop or cafeteria charging privileges on their student account.

Winston Berrotte Business Office 416-646-5276 wberrotte@yorkschool.com

Interest Interest is charged at 1.25% per month (15% per annum) on statement balances remaining unpaid for more than a month. Students with fees unpaid at the end of one term will not be permitted to return for the next term unless suitable payment arrangements have been made. Responsibility for Full Payment of Fees To plan the operating budget, the school establishes fees and makes contractual commitments in advance of the academic year. Therefore, withdrawals prior to or during the school year are subject to cancellation fees. In special circumstances, the school may pro-rate the fees to the date of withdrawal. The York School reserves the right to suspend or dismiss any student whose scholarship, behavior or cooperation is, in the opinion of the Head of School, detrimental to the standards of the school. In the event of a student’s suspension, dismissal, withdrawal or absence from the school for any reason, the parents or guardians are liable for payment of the fees.

Financial Information Tax Receipting Information – Child Care Receipt A child care receipt is issued for a student if child was 16 or under during the calendar year. Generally, only the spouse or common-law partner with the lower net income can claim child care expenses. If your child attended Extended Care, the fees have been included on the child care receipt. T4A The York School must issue a T4A to a student who has received financial assistance or scholarships. These amounts are considered by the Canada Revenue Agency as income of the recipient in the year received. However, budget 2006 and 2007 fully exempted scholarship, fellowship and bursary income received by elementary, secondary, and post-secondary school students. These measures will help ensure that no Canadian is deterred from accepting and experiencing exceptional education opportunities. T2202A A T2202A will be issued to students in respect of tuition fees paid to The York School in 2015 for Higher Level courses in the school’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. If the student does not use all the T2202A, the unused portion up to a maximum of $5,000 can be transferred to the parent. No claim can be made for the education and textbook tax credits as The York School is not designated by the province for the purposes of the Canada Student Loans Programme. If your child is involved in the Co-curricular Programme or Athletic Programme at the Junior School, he or she may be eligible for a Children’s Arts Tax Credit or a Children’s Fitness Tax Credit. Children’s Arts Tax Credit The Children’s Arts Tax Credit allows the claiming of eligible expenses up to $500 per year per child for children under 16. The credit applies to regular weekly lessons of at least 8 consecutive weeks. Eligible expenses include a variety of programs including those which contribute to the development of creative skills or expertise in an artistic or cultural activity.

/ 16

Financial Information Children’s Fitness Tax Credit The Children’s Fitness Tax Credit allows the claiming of eligible expenses up to $500 per year per child for children under 16. The credit applies to regular weekly lessons of at least 8 consecutive weeks. Eligible expenses include programs which offer a significant amount of physical activity that contributes to cardiorespiratory endurance, plus muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and/or balance. Financial Assistance The York School has limited funds available for financial assistance. Application for assistance is made through an outside agency. You can apply directly online at http://www.applefinancialservices.ca. Junior School Technology Innovation is Our Tradition The Primary Year Programme (PYP) is a world class educational framework that focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both inside and outside the classroom. As the world changes rapidly around our students, it is important that their learning tools reflect and keep pace with that change. At The York School, the Learning, Technology and Innovation department works with each grade and specialist teacher to find meaningful ways to enrich and deepen student learning. This collaborative approach ensures that we are constantly searching for opportunities and experiences that will deeply enhance the curriculum. This unique partnership has allowed us to curate a developmentally appropriate learning toolkit that lets both our teachers and students work at their best. Students in JK through to Grade 2 have access to classroom sets of iPads to help them inquire, question and explore; in Grades 3 to 5 each student receives an individual Chromebook to support and enrich their learning. All Junior School classrooms come equipped with Smart Boards and integrated projector/sound systems to help bring lessons to life. Afzal Shaikh is the dedicated Technology Teaching and Learning Coordinator supporting the Junior School. His primary role is to support staff and students to realize their teaching and learning potential. Middle School Student Citizenship Student Leadership Opportunities In the fall of each academic year, York School students apply and are selected to be Student Ambassadors to promote the climate and culture of their school and build meaningful relationships with new students and families. As part of the York Student Ambassador Programme, current students may be called upon as hosts, tour guides, event speakers, Homeroom partners, or ushers/greeters at school events. Middle School Athletics

Students have to “try-out” for a team. Skill along with the ability to commit to practices and games are considered for player selection. Given that player experience and skill levels vary, some teams will be in the league while others will play exhibition. The programme’s competitive nature, along with stringent qualifying criteria, may limit the number of players and may mean “cuts.” Where possible, practice squads will be set up to limit the number of cuts made. Fees are associated with interscholastic team sports and are charged to student accounts. Gladiator Athletic Development Programmes (GADP) Each term, we offer Gladiator Athletic Development Programmes to provide students with a variety of positive sport experiences. Programmes such as yoga, fitness boot camp, and strength and conditioning are available. Registration is term by term. Fees for GADP vary and will be posted with the registration information at the start of each term. Fees are charged to student accounts.
