THANK YOU FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

W

elcome to the latest edition of our donor report, You + York. This issue tells a story of impact, illustrated through many examples of your Annual Fund donations at work.

Entering the school each day, I am reminded of your generosity. I see your contributions written across the smiling faces of our students and faculty whose lives are enriched by the opportunities provided by the Annual Fund. This year, with the help of your donations, we have implemented stateof-the-art classrooms and facilitated collaborative learning across many subjects; we have grown our athletics programme and enhanced our co-curricular offerings; we have established our school at the cuttingedge of technology and allowed our students to thrive alongside a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

YOU+ YORK

It is because of you – our donors – that The York School continues to live up to its tradition of innovation and excellence. On behalf of our students, faculty and staff at The York School, I offer my gratitude. Sincerely,

Conor Jones Head of School 1 | SPRING / 2015 YOU + YORK

GIRLTECH GirlTech is about more than getting girls into technology and creating opportunities for their futures. It is about creating a group of young women who understand that technical ability alone does not create success. Positive and supportive networks are also key to achieving goals – this is true in any field, and particularly necessary for young women in STEM. GirlTech is building three skills simultaneously: learn to speak “code”, find a mentor to guide you, and lead those who follow you. Is that enough to close the gender gap in the entire industry? Not yet, but it’s a start.” Ruth Eichholtz, GirlTech Leader and IB Diploma Math Teacher

GIRL-TECH AT YORK

irlTech, The York School’s newest club, is breaking ground for young women in the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Members of GirlTech in Grades 9-12 are learning the technical language of computer code. Female students are equipping themselves with both the technical abilities and the leadership skills required to succeed in traditionally male-dominated disciplines. Through Annual Fund donations, female students receive leadership training. As an outcome of the training, they engage with JK/SK students on block play, with Junior and Middle School students as classroom assistants in mathematics, and also act as coding mentors in our co-curricular programmes.

WELCOME THE NEWLY LAUNCHED YOU + YORKwomen into the school to speak to students during Mentor Lunches. IN 3D 3

D printing is the latest innovation in design technology – and it is revolutionizing student creativity at The York School. This fall, through the Annual Fund, the school purchased its first CUBE 3D Printer, allowing students to turn their own computer-generated designs into tangible, plastic creations.

Through this exciting new technology, students are learning to conceptualize, engineer and problem-solve real life situations and challenges. Students have used the printer for personal projects, while faculty have been able to prototype unique ideas to deliver classroom curriculum. Using the printer, the school’s Robotics Team created a component for their rocketry project, and students built a camera mount to film the Middle School’s annual Pinewood Derby. It has also been a hugely successful addition to the Makers Club where students are bringing creative concepts to life. Next year, 3D printing will be incorporated into the curriculum for several grades and will become an increasingly important tool for both faculty and students. 4 | SPRING / 2015 YOU + YORK

ork School student Shannon Scherer was last year’s proud recipient of the Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots Scholarship, awarded to an outstanding student who exemplifies The York School’s values, is compassionate with fellow students, shows great academic promise and has the ability to make a strong contribution to the life of the school.

“I could not have achieved as much as I have in my time so far at The York School without excellent instruction, and I shall always be grateful to the school and all my teachers.“ In an act of great generosity, Shannon

announced that she would donate a portion of her award back to the school library through the Annual Fund. “I have benefited from the books the library holds, and from the websites we were told about in library class for reasons of research and exploration.” Shannon describes the school’s library as “a second home” and hopes to help other students feel the same. She asked that her contribution be used toward making the library a more comfortable space for students, as well as to purchase new books. Shannon’s donation will impact each student, teacher, parent and visitor who uses The York School Library.
