James H. Cunningham ’77 Artistic Director, ClassicalWQED-FM 89.3 D
Commencement Speaker d
A mainstay of Pittsburgh’s radio and classical music scenes, Jim Cunningham ’77 hosts the “QED Morning Show” and the nationally syndicated “Pittsburgh Symphony Radio” broadcasts on WQED-FM. A native of Warren, Pa., he became involved with a radio club as a child, leading to work as an announcer on WNAE. Throughout high school, Cunningham was a regular on WNAE and WRRN-FM. He continued to work in radio while at Thiel, serving as the general manager of the campus radio station, then WTGP. During college and after graduation (with degrees in English and business administration), he worked full-time for WGRP as an announcer, producer and account executive. A former intern at WQED, Cunningham returned to the station to work part-time and then was hired as a full-time announcer. He later earned a management certificate from the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Business with sponsorship from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Cunningham served as station manager of WQED for 15 years. As manager, he led the team that established WQEJ Johnstown; began 24-hour classical broadcasts; expanded live broadcasts in annual series from Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne University, Chautauqua NewYork, Heinz Hall and Heinz Chapel; and initiated new programs, national distribution of concerts from the River City Brass Band and numerous holiday specials. He served as classical music critic for Pittsburgh magazine, contributing a monthly column for 15 years; produced and hosted more than 30 features for WQED-TV’s “OnQ Magazine”; serves as a regular pledge host for WQEDTV; and has twice produced feature programs with violinist and composer André Rieu. Cunningham hosts the prestigious Robert Morris Speakers Series at Heinz Hall where he interviews and introduces lecturers such as Robert Redford, Benjamin Netanyahu and Salman Rushdie. He has traveled as a correspondent with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on 21 world tours, including memorable broadcasts from the Vatican, the great Wall in Beijing and the Salzburg Music Festival in Austria (where he produced the first international live digital broadcast). A lifelong music lover, he studied piano and guitar, and sang in the choirs at First Lutheran Church in Warren, junior and senior high school, andThiel College under Dr. Marlowe Johnson. An enthusiastic teacher, Cunningham taught music and art for the Carnegie Institute adult education program and currently teaches “Unlocking the Classics” for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Pittsburgh and the Academy of Lifelong Learning at Carnegie Mellon University. His work has been recognized with awards from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, the Air Award from March of Dimes, the Gabriel Award from US Catholic Broadcasters, the OperaTheater of Pittsburgh’s Millie Award, the Board of Directors of Chatham Baroque and the Pittsburgh Symphony Paul J. Ross Award for Excellence in Education and Audience Engagement. As an active member of the community, Cunningham regularly appears as a guest speaker, narrator or host at various cultural events. He has served on the boards of the City of Pittsburgh Arts Commission, Chatham Baroque, Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania and Eastern Public Radio, and is currently on the boards of the Friends of the Carnegie Library, the PittsburghYouth Symphony, the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society Executive Committee and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the Steinway Society and the Pittsburgh Concert Society.
Linda Boyce Haller
Executive Director, Henry E. Haller Jr. Foundation D
Honorary Doctor of Humanities d
Linda Boyce Haller has made a difference in the lives of thousands of Thiel College students by helping them achieve their dreams of entrepreneurship. Haller is the executive director of the Henry E. Haller Jr. Foundation, the organization her late husband, Henry Haller H’97, started, which is the namesake and funding source for the Haller Enterprise Institute at Thiel College, an innovative program that encourages highly motivated students from any major to begin their own business while they continue their education. A hallmark of the program is that scholarships are given on the strength of the idea, not the major of the student involved. The Hallers’ generosity has impacted more than 1,000 students in the form of guidance, financial support and a belief that the entrepreneurial spirit crosses all disciplines and should be fostered. Since its inception, the Institute has involved men and women of every major on Thiel’s campus. Dedicated to civic and community involvement, Haller has been an advocate for a number of causes and issues in the greater Pittsburgh area and is a former member of the Thiel College Board of Trustees (and a passionate advocate for Thiel students). Haller holds a bachelor’s degree from Villa Maria College in Erie, Pa. (now part of Gannon University) and a master’s from Carnegie Mellon University. She was formerly the alumni director of the Medical School for the University of Pittsburgh and the director of volunteer services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. Currently a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Haller has a daughter, Kelly Shannon; son, Kevin Boyce; a stepdaughter, Marjorie Haller; and five grandchildren, Madelaine and Jack Shannon and Samantha, Will and Andrew Boyce.
William A. Robinson, Ph.D. Professor of Performing Arts D
Professor Emeritus d
Dr. William Robinson, professor of performing arts, has applied for exactly one job during his academic career. In 1974, he applied for a theater position at a little college in Greenville, Pa. Almost 40 years later, he has transformed the performing arts program at Thiel College and taught thousands of students how to have confidence in their individual abilities and appreciate the transformative power of theater. As director of the Thiel Players, Robinson has produced fall and spring productions each year—ranging from Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” to classic Greek and Roman plays to modern musicals—and since 1980, he has welcomed incoming students with performances of “Charlie Brown Goes to College.” Robinson has directed the Greenville Area Community Theatre’s summer production since 1992. He also has produced children’s shows for area grade schools since 1975. Robinson is well known for his ability to choose just the right play and cast just the right person for every role. He has served as chair of the Communication and Performing Arts Departments as well as a member of the Faculty Council, the Promotion and Tenure Committee, and the Artists and Lecturers Committee. He treats his colleagues with respect and professionalism. In 1999, alumni and friends established the William A. Robinson Endowment for Theater Arts and, in 2007, the William A. Robinson Theater was dedicated, becoming Thiel’s first theater-specific facility on campus. He received the Distinguished Teacher Award in 2004 and Professor of the Year in 2007. Robinson holds a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University, a master’s from the University of Pittsburgh and a doctorate from Bowling Green State University. Robinson is retiring in May and will move from Greenville to Philadelphia.

academic regalia The gowns, hoods and caps worn in the academic ceremonies today are relics of clothing worn in medieval times by students and professors. In the early universities—Bologna, Paris, Oxford—the professors wore more colorful academic regalia than do their modern-day descendants. The gowns and hoods were probably worn for warmth in the unheated halls where lectures were delivered. Since 1895, in the United States, the colors and types of caps and gowns have been largely standardized. In 1932, the code was revised to some extent, and in 1960, it was revised once more. A few American universities have adopted gowns other than black in color, and in European universities there is more diversity in cut and in the cap than prevails in the United States. TASSELS The tassels worn on the caps may or may not be of the same types. In some institutions, all masters’ and bachelors’ tassels are black; in others, the tassels, which are the same as the colors on the facing of the hoods, reflect the degree received. The tassels worn by doctors may be black or gold thread. GOWNS The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bell-shaped sleeves, and also is designed to be worn open or closed. TRIMMINGS None for the bachelor’s or master’s degrees. For the doctor’s degree, the gown is faced down in the front with black velvet with three bars of the same across the sleeves; or these facings and crossbars may be of velvet of the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. HOODS The length of the hood worn for the bachelor’s degree is three feet; for the master’s degree it is three and one-half feet; and for the doctor’s degree, it is four feet; while that worn for the doctor’s degree shall only have panels at the sides. The hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree; more than one color is shown by division of the field color in a variety of ways, such as chevron or chevrons, equal divisions, etc. The binding or edging of the hood is of velvet or velveteen, two, three and five inches in width for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively; while the color is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains.
COLORS For all academic purposes, including trimming of doctors’ gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subjects are as follows: Agriculture............................................. Maize Arts, Letters, Humanities ........................... White Commerce, Accountancy, Business...................Drab Dentistry.................................................. To the Class of 2013: You chose a pathway to higher education and life enrichment, one that took you through the facilities, faculty and experiences offered by Thiel College.Thiel is a well-respected institution of higher learning, soon to celebrate our 150th anniversary. On behalf of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, I offer sincere congratulations on your special achievement—graduation from Thiel College. You worked many long days and late nights to fulfill the rigorous requirements to graduate. No doubt, you also have witnessed the many successes and failures that accompany such a journey. For that, I know you are thankful. Today is a day to be very proud as it marks a milestone of academic, experiential and relationship achievements in your life. In today’s global economy and an evolving civilization with a multitude of opportunities, a liberal arts education is becoming more and more valued. Such an education offers an opportunity to develop the individual in a holistic manner—body, mind and spirit. Additionally,Thiel offers a “one-on-one” faculty-tostudent relationship, unique to today’s educational experience. When you entered Thiel, we made a commitment to you that the College would offer an opportunity for a valued educational experience. We kept that commitment. You made a commitment to work hard and fulfill all the requirements to graduate. You kept that commitment.Today, as you enter the next phase of your life’s experiences, you will be held accountable to begin to put your knowledge and skills to use. As you enter the next phase, be proud of what you have achieved here at Thiel, continue to build on the solid foundation you have laid and always remember to “give back to those who gave to you.” The best way to do that is to become an active member of the Thiel College Alumni Association. Some 14,000 strong, we represent the best opportunity for future Thiel students to enjoy the moment you are experiencing today. I wish you the best of health and success. Respectfully, Charles Goodrick ’74 President, Alumni Association Board Parents and friends are invited to take photographs in the area to the left of the stage. In order to avoid blocking audience view, please assemble in the far left aisle and step forward only when taking photographs, remaining behind the designated areas. DVDs of today’s commencement excersises will be available for purchase. Contact Dr. Victor Evans (vevans@thiel.edu) or Cyrill Parham (cparham285@gmail.com). A $20 donation to support Thiel College Campus Media is requested. Special “legacy” photographs will be taken for those graduates whose immediate family members are Thiel College alumni. Please meet near the terrace in front of Greenville Hall (rain site will be the Weyers Student Lounge in the HMSC) immediately following the Commencement ceremonies.
