“Today my role includes the development and implementation of the company’s business strategies; to create, execute, and monitor the performance of comprehensive business plans; establish internal company policies, procedures, and legal protocols; overseeing employment, professional development, and employee performance activities; and establishing long-lasting relationships with partners, local authorities, and regulators. It is also my responsibility to create a company culture and monitor its adoption.
“I had no previous industry experience, but I very quickly realised what a difference we make to people’s lives. It’s a message that, still to this day, I emphasise to all our staff whatever their role in the organisation – they make the difference, and I want them to be proud of that fact.”
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST-SELLING PRODUCTS AIMED AT THE DOMESTIC MARKET?
“Our best-selling product aimed at the domestic market is our Harmony homelift, which can be partially or fully enclosed (Harmony FE). The launch of the Harmony was an industry-first in 1988 – it was the first domestic through-floor direct-acting hydraulic lift on the market. The Harmony FE followed in 2017.
“Today, both are available in a range of sizes from compact to longer and wider. The load capacity ranges from 250kg to 325kg depending on the model selected. This flexibility means that across the Harmony range we can accommodate users independently standing, seated, or seated in a wheelchair, or in a wheelchair and accompanied by a carer.
“The Harmony and Harmony FE can also be customised. Our British manufacturing base and supply chain, coupled with our in-house expertise, make this possible. Customisation includes a choice of upholstery, flooring, and powder coating in an array of RAL colours, alongside many optional extras to enhance the user experience.” lift and improving the features and design of another current lift.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have a highly skilled and experienced in-house design team. This, coupled with our engineering heritage, means research and development are an intrinsic part of our business model. We have incredibly robust R&D processes which involve all departments and external advisors. Currently, we are on track for a launch by the end of the year.”
TERRY LIFTS ALSO INSTALLS WHEELCHAIR ACCESS SOLUTIONS AT MANY CONSUMER EVENTS. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIG EVENTS IT HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH THIS YEAR?
ARE
YOU LAUNCHING ANY MORE PRODUCTS FOR THE DOMESTIC MARKET?
“We are working on several developments for the domestic market. These range from the development of a completely new lift to a compact version of an existing
“Since launching our first through- floor lift in 1968 – the Terry Personal hand-operated through-floor lift –we have supplied many lifts for all sorts of requirements. While we are renowned for our domestic lifts, we are also fortunate to have a strong presence in the commercial sector, which means we are often called upon to provide public access solutions too.
“This can be anything from a platform lift to gain access to a garden centre to providing temporary access at a public event. Over the years we have gained quite a reputation for the latter with many repeat customers. Most notable is our association with the Horse of the Year Show.
“We have supplied the five-day equestrian event with temporary lift access for more than 10 years. Our Classic Melody 2 vertical platform lift provides temporary wheelchair access to the raised hospitality area. This lift is used exclusively by the event organiser, Grandstand Media.
“Prior to despatch, the lift is preassembled in our factory, tested and re-packed ready for installation. After running throughout the event, the lift is then transported back to our factory where it is protected and stored for use the following year. We are very proud of our long-standing relationship with Grandstand Media, and I am pleased to see we have already received the order for Horse of the Year Show 2023!”
TERRY LIFTS PROVIDED AN OUTDOOR PLATFORM FOR A CARE WORKER AND HIS FAMILY BACK IN 2021, WHICH WAS FILMED FOR ITV’S LOVE YOUR GARDEN. HAS TERRY LIFTS HAD ANY MORE INVOLVEMENT WITH THE PROGRAMME?
“Through our UK-wide partner network we are fortunate to work with several of the primetime makeover shows regularly. This opportunity was different because it was local. Carl and his family live just down the road from the Terry Lifts factory, in Macclesfield, so we handled it directly. While it was obviously very rewarding it was also great to involve all the team – it’s not often we can follow a lift from enquiry to TV screen!
“Last year we were honoured to re-visit the Lamptey family to find out how the lift had impacted their lives, especially Elle, who had been diagnosed with a spinal disability and could no longer walk properly. To hear her say that she has her life back because of our help is humbling. She said the lift is ‘…an absolute gamechanger!’ It doesn’t get much better than that. It proves what a difference we make.”
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT FOR TERRY LIFTS TO BE A MEMBER OF THE MADE IN BRITAIN PARTNERSHIP LAST YEAR [THE COLLECTIVE OF BRITISH MANUFACTURERS]?
“We are incredibly proud of our 70-year British heritage and our commitment to the British manufacturing industry. We support many local businesses and 100 per cent of the supply chain for our homelifts is here in Britain so the organisation is a good fit for us.
“The accreditation promotes trust and confidence with both consumers and decision-makers, therefore, by using the mark customers know that Terry Lifts is a trusted company which values transparency.
“Due to the rigorous application process existing and potential customers can clearly see that our products adhere to the highest standards. This is invaluable and gives us the edge over the competition, especially when other lift suppliers may be economising and reducing quality and standards to help combat the challenging economy.”
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED IN THE UK?
“We have several routes to market – either through us, direct or via one of our UK partners. How this works depends on the partnership agreement. Some do everything, from handling the enquiry through to install and maintenance, others simply pass the lead on. We are very flexible and like to work with our partners to achieve the best fit for their business and plans.
“All the lifts are distributed from our base in Knutsford for UK-wide delivery and installation, and shipping abroad to our export agents.”
ARE YOU LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR DEALER NETWORK, AND, IF SO, WHAT KIND OF DEALERS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
“We are working hard to expand our dealer network both in the UK and abroad. In fact, our Global Business Development Manager Chris Hay is tasked with exactly this – proactively seeking new lift partners and dealers in the UK, across Europe and the rest of the world. Interested retailers can email Chris at chay@terrylifts.co.uk or call the main landline, 01565 752800.
“We are looking for dealers who work to our exacting standards. We achieve this through fully certified product and survey training at our training facility and providing thorough and consistent sales/ after-sales, marketing and technical support. We also make business easier with access to our online ordering portal.
“Our dealers benefit from our presence in both the private and public sectors and reap the rewards of our proactive lead generation. Plus, they can draw on the knowledge, experience and skill that comes of partnering with a long-established and trusted British brand.”
HAS TERRY LIFTS BEEN AFFECTED BY GLOBAL SHIPPING DELAYS AS A BUSINESS?
“Our supply chain is based in Britain, so the global shipping delays had minimal impact on the business.
