We are Legion IT HAS BEEN JUST UNDER A YEAR SINCE WE LAUNCHED OUR NEW DAILY BRAND AND SET PLANS IN ACTION TO INTRODUCE A MODERN APPROACH TO HOW THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION SCOTLAND DOES BUSINESS. In that year, we have taken some great steps forward: reshaping our grants to enable us to fund more veterans, more efficiently; raising awareness through campaigns such as Voices of Veterans; improving the ways we keep in touch with members by overhauling our mailing list and sending copies of our magazine directly to individuals for the first time; and having a presence at and hosting many commemorative events during this anniversary period of the First World War. We must continue to grow, though, and in the next few weeks we are asking our members to give a little time for our fundraising and awareness campaign. From 20 April until 9 May, Legion Scotland needs to make its voice heard across the country as we partake in a series of fundraising events and collect money for veteran support.

We have tried to make fundraising as easy as possible, setting up a Virgin Money Giving site to enable online sponsorship and a number that you, your family and friends can use to donate via text. Just send LSCO15 £5 to 70070 to give £5.

There will be a great deal to discuss and reflect upon at our annual conference, which takes place from 21 to 23 May at Perth’s Dewars Centre. I hope many of you will be in attendance to share your views and ideas.

I also hope to see Legion Scotland out in force at the Gallipoli commemoration event at Edinburgh Castle on 25 April. I am delighted that we received funding to put this on and pay our respects to all those who served in the conflict. Legion Scotland has a fantastic opportunity not only to make sure they are remembered, but to make sure all our other veterans aren’t forgotten.

THE WAY AHEAD Martyn Hawthorn heads up Royal British Legion Scotland restructuring working group IN ACCORDANCE with ‘The road to re-establishing our roots’ document that was distributed to the membership in January 2015, we have set up a small working group to look at the efficiency and effectiveness of the Royal British Legion Scotland (Legion Scotland) structure.

Martyn Hawthorn, NBT member and secretary of the Moffat Branch and the Dumfries and Galloway area, will be the convenor of the group.

Martyn has a lot of experience of organisational change both in the Royal Navy and in civilian life. Experienced Legionnaires make up the other members of the working group: Alistair Black from the Aberdeen, Banff and Kincardine area, David Boe from Ayrshire, Margaret Brown and Mick McKeown from Angus and Perthshire, Freddie Wood from Edinburgh and the Lothians, and CEO Kevin Gray.

The group will consider whether change is required to make Legion Scotland more effective. If change is required, they will propose an

organisational structure that addresses the necessary changes so that Legion Scotland will be better placed now and in the future to assist the membership and the exservice community in Scotland.

Martyn believes it’s vitally important to engage members, branches and areas in this project, and would welcome the views and ideas of the membership on how Legion Scotland should be structured in the modern day ex-service community environment.

The group will keep members informed as they proceed. There will be many questions and lots of ground to cover, but with your help the working group will be able to propose a structure for Legion Scotland that is effective, efficient and provides the best platform to assist the membership and the ex-service community in Scotland.

Improvement team member Hayley McInally is running the Edinburgh Marathon in May this year to raise money for Legion Scotland.

Hayley’s father, Charlie served in the Armed Forces for over 22 years, and her brother Neil is a member of The Black Watch. She said: “We had a fantastic childhood being brought up in the Forces and it’s something I’m very proud of.” Hayley has been following a 17-week training programme to prepare for the marathon and hopes to raise a good amount for the cause.

ArranMan challenge MARK WHITE, who served almost 10 years in the Royal Artillery, has challenged himself to complete the ArranMan, the Ironman triathlon on the Isle of Arran. It consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile run, completed in that order without rest. Mark will be attempting the challenge on 13 June and aims to raise awareness and funds for Legion Scotland. Keith Brown joined members of Legion Scotland and their families for a spin at Xtreme Karting in Edinburgh last December. The event, arranged

by Head Office, brought together servicemen past and present with representatives from military and veteran charities, along with a number of other useful contacts.

The event gave the Veterans Minister a good opportunity to get direct information from exservicemen on the issues that are important to them.

New fund offers help to non-members LEGION SCOTLAND has opened up its Ex-Service Community Support Fund to all veterans and their dependants. This means you no longer need to be a member to apply for help with an immediate financial issue that may be causing hardship or distress.

The new fund, which incorporates the old Legion Veterans Fund, World War One Commemorations Fund and Branch Assistance

Fund, is intended to support veterans and their families across Scotland.

Your financial need may be to repair or replace household appliances or furniture, to cover essential home repairs or to adapt your home for a disability.

The fund can also provide financial support for branches to run comradeship or remembrance events.

Research conducted by Poppyscotland in 2014 found

that 23% of the veterans community were living on below £7,500 annual net household income. Further, 11% of the Scotland exservice community say their household has been in arrears in the last 12 months.

COMMEMORATION

GRAND CEREMONY FOR GALLIPOLI CENTENARY WE ARE delighted to announce that on 25 April we are hosting the commemoration event at Edinburgh Castle for the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War’s Gallipoli Campaign.

The campaign, which resulted in over 200,000 allied casualties, saw an allied naval and military operation attempt to force the Dardanelles in order to secure entry to the Black Sea as well as Turkey’s capital. The event will honour the sacrifices of Scotland’s men and women, and aims to raise awareness of their role in the campaign.

Beginning at 8am, attendees will be greeted by Legion Scotland members and welcomed onto the Esplanade where they can view and take part in the service from inside the Scottish National War Memorial in the castle on a large screen.

The event will open with the Legion Scotland national standard bearers marching across the castle drawbridge, and wreaths will later be laid within the Scottish National War Memorial and on the Esplanade at the replica Stone of Remembrance.

featured in the event. The song describes the experiences of a young Australian soldier at Gallipoli and has been regularly used to commemorate those who served in the conflict.

Expected to attract record-breaking numbers of attendees from the United Kingdom and overseas, we hope to host an event of the highest calibre that will continue to build international relations between Scotland and other nations.

Perth branch gets involved in high-school commemoration project

HE NEWLY re-formed Perth branch has been working with staff and students at Perth Academy to commemorate their fallen.

The school is one of a handful across the country with its own war memorial, and history teacher Miss Hobson is heading up a project, along with a group of second-year pupils, to remember those whose names it bears.

Miss Hobson, who travelled to the Somme, Ypres and Vimy Ridge with a group of S3 pupils last year, explains: “The memorial in our school hall dates from when the school was built over 80 years ago. It names 162 pupils who lost their lives in the First World War who had connections with Perth Academy.

“A former colleague who has since retired, had already done a lot of work researching these names and finding out basic information about them, such as their family connections and their place of burial or memorial. With this great starting point, we decided Pupils read names on to do something to preserve the memorial in Perth the memories of these men Academy’s main hall who gave their lives for their country, and we started our Flowers of the Forest project.

“Our aim is to have a short, five to 10 minute ceremony for each of the men listed on our memorial.

We hope to raise awareness and create an understanding of the fine work by Legion Scotland and Regimental Associations, as well as providing a fitting tribute to the former pupils who gave their lives

“The pupils involved are contributing their ideas over the coming weeks to ensure that these services can be meaningful to everyone.”

Perth branch has provided National and Branch Standards to the school, to stand alongside their memorial.

Members of the branch will also attend ceremonies and help with research into the stories of those being remembered.

“Another key aim for our project,” Miss Hobson explains, “is to involve veterans and members of the public, and there is an open invitation to attend any of the ceremonies we will be running. We hope to raise awareness and create an understanding of the fine work by Legion Scotland and Regimental Associations, as well as providing a fitting tribute to the former pupils it vis Pupils who gave their lives.”

PIPING IN THE NEW YEAR Banchory branch rounded off 2014 with another successful Hogmanay event. Bringing in the bells was a group of pipers led

by Pipe Major Cassandra Smith and Drum Major Rob Brownfield.

SERVICE FOR WWI SOLDIER Private McColl receives Christian burial 97 years after his death A BRITISH soldier executed in Ypres, Belgium has been laid to rest in a burial ceremony conducted and attended by members of the Passchendaele & District Sub Branch.

Private C F McColl was shot at dawn on 28 December 1917. After the execution, there was no padre to follow the body to the cemetery and it was left to two of his colleagues to bury him. He was therefore denied a Christian burial.

Without condoning Private McColl’s army record, and with the

REMEMBERING QUINTINSHILL On Friday 22 May, Poppyscotland will be taking part in commemorative events in Gretna Green to remember those who died in the devastating Quintinshill train disaster 100 years ago on that day SIGNALLING ERRORS caused a troop train, carrying soldiers from the Royal Scots on their way to fight in Gallipoli, to collide with a stationary passenger train. The wreckage was then subsequently hit by a north-bound express train. A gas leakage from the troop train ignited, setting fire to carriages and creating an inferno.

229 deaths were formally recorded as a result of the disaster, but the death toll was likely a lot higher.

The incident remains the worst rail disaster in the United Kingdom.

Poppyscotland will be supporting the commemorations by offering Remembrance crosses and poppies in exchange for a donation as a part of its commitment to supporting the World

War One Centenary programme. Any money raised on the day will be used to support today’s ex-service men and women and their families.

The day will start with a drumhead service at the cairn in Gretna Green, followed by a march to the Quintinshill Sidings where a short reading will take place, followed by a three-volley salute by the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Also in attendance will be the Royal Scots Association, the Western Front Association, uniformed youth organisations and of course Legion Scotland members.

Household survey reveals challenges of Scotland’s ex-service community

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS A MAJOR piece of research released by Poppyscotland in December last year found that the key difficulties facing ex-service men and women and their families living in Scotland continue to be health, welfare, finances and employment.

Poppyscotland believes that this new research will be extremely beneficial in helping both the ex-service charity sector and public services better understand and address the current and future needs of veterans and their families living in Scotland.

The ex-service community in Scotland is estimated to be around 545,000 people – 10% of the Scottish population and 9% of the entire UK ex-service community. In the survey, one in eight of Scotland’s adult ex-service community reported unmet need for support, which equates to over 50,000 people.

Social isolation The study identified that loneliness is an increasing problem in society, particularly among older people. Social isolation affects as many as 15% of the adult ex-service community in Scotland.

Employment The majority (64%) of Scotland’s adult ex-service community is retired.

However, for younger veterans, finding and sustaining employment can be a significant challenge after leaving the military.

Finances The survey results identified that finances are also a big area of concern. The average annual net household of £18,800 income for Scotland’s ex-service community is lower than the £21,000 of the UK ex-service community.

Some 23% of those surveyed said they were living on below £7,500 annual net household income, compared with 15% in the UK exservice community. Also worrying is that 18% have experienced fuel poverty.

Commenting on the research, Poppyscotland Head of Welfare Services Gary Gray, said: “Poppyscotland already provides a number of vital services to support those in the Armed Forces community. However, it is clear that more must be done to address their current and future needs.

“We believe that the findings are an invaluable source of information that will help inform organisations and agencies, such as Poppyscotland and Legion Scotland, in developing and shaping services. With a better understanding of what the important issues are, we can better tackle them to improve the wellbeing of Scotland’s ex-service community.”

FORCES PERSONNEL and veterans were present to bolster the spirits of the Scottish rugby team during their Six Nations clash against Italy on 28 February.

Scottish Rugby donated 1,000 tickets for the match to serving troops and veterans, all of which were snapped up well in advance of the fixture via Tickets for Troops.

Before kickoff, soldiers from 51st Infantry Brigade met with Scottish prop Alasdair Dickinson, a keen supporter of the Armed Forces, at Edinburgh Castle. He said: “Obviously they do a fantastic job so it’s great if they can come along and enjoy themselves.”

egion Scotland’s national 2015 standard bearing competition takes place in May as part of the Annual Conference in Perth, and Edinburgh and Lothians area hopes to improve on its already strong record. Area Secretary Freddie Wood explains: “We’ve had a first place and a few seconds with the Cadets. We’ve never won the adult one, but this could be our year!”

Freddie organises the training sessions that run for nine weeks before the area competition, which decides who will represent them in the national final. It’s Adam Carruthers, though, who shouts the orders, and his experience is extensive to say the least.

Adam, 80, served in the Scots Guards, so is no stranger to ceremony. “The first ceremonial thing I did was Queen Mary’s funeral in 1953.

Then we did the Coronation. After that, we were out to the Suez Canal for two years, then back to London to do royal duties at the palaces.

“I got in to standard bearing 50 years ago, in 1965. A friend of mine down in Kelso was doing it, and I decided I’d like a go.”

Now, as just one part of his long-standing commitment to Legion Scotland, he trains up a new generation of standard bearers. His students range from mature Legion members who like to keep their practice tight, to Army and RAF Cadets as young as 13.

“The Cadets are the ones who give me the most satisfaction,” he says. “They’ve not been in the Forces, so they’re coming in completely raw. It’s great just watching them and seeing what they can do. We had a wee lassie here

who won the nationals one year. When she was marching around, there was pure concentration in her face. You could have fired a gun and I don’t think she would have blinked.”

One of this year’s youngest attendees is 13-year-old Kyle Laird, an Army Cadet.

“I only really joined the Cadets for the shooting and stuff, but then drill grew on me.

This came up and I thought I may as well try it. This is my second year. It’s fun, sociable and different, too.”

Having a dad who is a retired Army medic has been an inspiration to Kyle, who plans on joining the Army when he leaves school.

For him, one of the main attractions of standard bearing is the opportunity to honour the fallen. “I’d always want to think that I’m doing something respectful for the country.”

Fifteen-year-old Stephanie Watson was similarly inspired by family connections.

“Because of my dad, who is ex-military, I’ve always wanted to join the Army. My cousin was an Army Cadet and he got me into it.

“I’d always seen standard bearing and thought the way you do your drill while holding a flag, and doing movements with the flag while still marching, looked interesting, so I came along one night.”

While many of her school friends spend their free time playing hockey, football or attending dance classes, Stephanie loves being involved in the Cadets and standard bearing.

Last year, she went on a commemorative trip with the Cadets to Belgium, and was proud to watch a fellow female Cadet carry the colours in a parade.

Kenneth Bennett, 24, got involved with standard bearing as a Cadet and won the area competition three years in a row. He has kept coming back and really enjoys the drill.

“Ever since I joined the Cadets, I was interested in drill and uniform. A lot of people say I have a bit of OCD because I like everything to be perfect. You find a lot of standard bearers like everything to be perfect – they don’t like a crease out of line.”

Kenneth’s ambitions to serve were thwarted by a muscle condition. “I applied for the RAF, and got asked to come back in two years’ time because I had asthma.

However, by then, the deterioration of the muscles in my shoulders had gone so far that I wasn’t able to sign up. Due to the fact that I could never serve, I’ve always liked to contribute in some sort of way to the active serving personnel and the already retired.”

Certain movements in standard bearing can be quite painful for Kenneth, but he says: “I just try to bear it, because I really enjoy doing this.”

Comradeship is a big part of the attraction. “I enjoy going out around the country and meeting new standard bearers. A lot of the ex-service personnel who do the standard bearing all have great stories to tell and Slow march

are all really interesting people. I consider most of the guys here tonight to be good friends.”

His proudest moment was carrying the colours at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo as part of an anniversary for the Legion. “I’ve got to say that the Tattoo was the best experience I’ve had in standard bearing. We were only on for one night, but it was fantastic.”

A few of the group originally got involved out of necessity because a branch or military association didn’t have anyone to carry their colours.

That’s exactly how things started for Davie Peters, who has been a member of Legion Scotland since 1992. He was at a branch meeting in Portobello when someone raised the issue that none of their full members were standard bearers.

“I said to him, ‘I’ll do it’, and he said ‘were you in the Army?’ I was in the Royal Scots, only for a wee while – just over a year.”

He says that standard bearing has become harder with age, particularly “trying to keep your shoulder up straight when you’re on parade”.

There have been many proud standard bearing moments for Davie, but the true highlight was carrying the colours in front of the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 1995.

For him, the importance of standard bearing isn’t only about remembering the fallen, but about reminding veterans that Legion Scotland is here to help.

“It’s good to show [ex-service men and women] that there are clubs they can go to when they need help. I am pensions and welfare officer for the branch as well, and if it wasn’t for outlets such as this for the boys to come to, then there’d be more on the streets. We’d have a worse situation than we’ve got now.”

Joseph Yeardly and Ian Spence both got involved in standard bearing training in order to brush up on carrying colours for their associations – the Royal Observer Corps Association for Joseph and the Parachute Regimental Association for Ian. Joseph, who is also a member of Legion Scotland’s Forth branch, explains: “I’ve not done any standard bearing since 1991. Basically, that’s when we were stood down from operational duties. There were a very select number of us who were standard bearers at that time as part of the Queen’s Colour Squadron. “Last year, before the Armed Forces Day parade, our normal standard bearer had taken ill.

We then realised that we needed to get a couple of people trained.”

Ian came along to standard bearing training seven years ago, to “get a wee bit of practice”, but Adam soon told him that, as a member of Royal British Legion Scotland and Central branch, he had better go in for the competition.

“I was too frightened of Adam to say no!” jokes Ian, “but I enjoy it all. It has been great meeting the guys, and we’ve all become really good friends. We’ve done quite a bit around the country, taking standards out for different parades, funerals and other occasions.

“It’s important to remember people who have served in the Forces and people who have passed away. And when standards are on parade, it really does make the parade.”

in Bathgate. He wanted to give something back, so became a standard bearer.

He has taken part in the National Armistice parade at Edinburgh’s City Chambers, and was there when the Seaforth Highlanders laid up their colours in front of the Queen.

“If you were just a normal Legion member, you wouldn’t get to go on a lot of the parades we get to go on. It’s quite a privilege,” says Carl.

A different training background gave him an extra challenge when he first started with the group. He explains: “Because I come from a Light Division battalion, our drill is completely different. We never did the slow march in the Light Infantry. It was always marching at 140 paces a minute.”

After an hour and a half of rigorous training under Adam’s watchful eye, the group disperses – slowly, mind you, as they get caught up in chatter. The friendship and good spirit is clear to see.

Before we head off, Adam shares some final tips with us.

“Swinging the left arm can be hard to get right. It needs to go with your left leg.

Put your right hand in your pocket and just swing your left arm, and you’ll soon get on OK. Just practise. And listen to what you’re being told,” he says. “If you’re going to do something, do it properly.

That’s the motto.”

ooking at the winners of the Dickin Medal – a People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) award to honour the work of animals in war – there are three kinds that dominate: pigeons, dogs and horses, who have delivered messages, located people for rescue and served in terrific number in many a conflict.

A WING AND A PRAYER Carrier pigeon was a key method of communication during the First and Second World Wars.

The first three recipients of the Dickin Medal in December 1943 – White Vision, Winkie and Tyke – all delivered messages that aided in the rescue of stranded aircrews during WWII. White Vision was bred in Motherwell by the Fleming brothers, who lent her to the National Pigeon Service during the war. She was stationed at

Salty and Roselle, two Labrador guide dogs, were awarded the Dickin Medal for leading their blind owners out of the World Trade Center in New York, down more than 70 flights of stairs, during the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Treo and Theo were both recognised for their service in Afghanistan, locating IEDs. While Treo survived to receive his medal, Theo’s was posthumous: he suffered a seizure shortly after the death of his handler, Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, on 1 March 2011.

Pigeons are now largely unused in modern conflict, with technology having taken their place. The Swiss Army, though, only discharged their fleet of 30,000 in the mid-1990s, and occasional stories have surfaced over recent years that suggest our feathered friends may still have a role to play.

SEND IN THE CAVALRY Horses were used and suffered in great numbers during the First World War, but since then have been a more unusual feature of the British Army, acting almost exclusively in ceremonial roles.

Those who received Dickin Medals in 1947 were serving with the police force.

In September 2014, a warhorse called Warrior was given an honorary Dickin Medal in commemoration of the animals who served or contributed in some way during World War One.

One particularly well-known mutt from World War Two, though not a recipient of the Dickin Medal, is a St Bernard called Bamse. He was a military mascot for the Royal Norwegian Navy who ended up stationed in Montrose. He was seen by many as a symbol of Norwegian freedom. His story is told in a Scottish best-selling book, Sea Dog Bamse: World War II Canine Hero.

A SPIRITING SYMBOL The role of animal mascots in combat may not be as typically heroic, but the animals who have provided a source of companionship, fun and a boost in morale have been important for many military personnel.

There have been many unusual creatures named as mascots over the years, although most of them were not deployed with their regiments.

Winnie the Pooh was inspired by a black bear at London Zoo who was an unofficial mascot for Canadian regiment the Fort Garry Horse. The 4th South African Infantry Regiment’s mascot during World War One was a springbok named Nancy, while the 3rd South African Infantry Brigade adopted a baboon called Jackie as theirs.

Closer to home, a special military mascot actually lives in Edinburgh Zoo. Sir Nils Olav, a king penguin, was adopted by the Norwegian Royal Guard, became their mascot and has since risen through the ranks to become Colonel-inChief in 2005. He was also knighted in a special ceremony at the zoo in 2008.

Meanwhile, a Shetland pony named Cruachan IV is the popular mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Cruachan III, who retired in 2012 at the age of 23, was a favourite of the Queen. The tradition dates back to 1929, when the first Cruachan was presented to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders by Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll and Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment.

YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND IN ME Tackling isolation among veterans is one of the key aims of Legion Scotland’s Wellbeing Team, and our network of branches and clubs across the country is key to the operation

N

ATIONAL WELLBEING Coordinator Stephen Baird is calling for more members to get involved in befriending services in their area by offering as little as two hours a week.

Poppyscotland research in 2014 found that ex-servicemen and women are more likely to live alone than the general population – 41% compared with just 24%. A great many of them are over the age of 75, could be less able to get out and about, and may not have family nearby.

It’s not only older veterans who may appreciate support and friendship, though. Adjusting to civilian life can be a massive culture shock for many, regardless of age. Even those with friends and family around can feel isolated because

the people around them can’t relate to the things they’ve done and seen in service.

Indeed, it’s common for them to be struggling with issues such as bereavement and many veterans have reported having problems with relationships and isolation.

In light of this, Ayrshire area has been proactive in building a befriending network and is currently recruiting to expand its team of eight.

William McMaster (pictured above), Wellbeing Coordinator for the area, said: “There is immense satisfaction in doing this job: you’ve only to see the

expression on someone’s face when you take them out. They may not have exchanged a word with another human being for weeks. We all deserve good company and we all need it from time to time.”

Having served in the Falklands as a Scots Guardsman, William has a strong understanding and firsthand experience of the troubles that ex-service men and women can face.

“When we are struggling with health issues, we often don’t ask for help. As befrienders, we have to go and find our veterans, and start the conversation. You soon realise how much it was needed. It’s often really needed.”

VOLUNTEER BEFRIENDERS must be able to give two hours a week, and are needed across the country. While a military background is great, anyone with an interest and empathy is a welcome addition to the team. There will be a new befriending training programme available from April with ongoing support.

Legion Scotland’s outgoing National Chairman, Robert Allan MBE, shares his experience of conscription and his passion for veteran support

WAS CALLED up for National Service on 11 November, believe it or not, in 1951. I was sent to Oswestry in Shropshire, then trained as a wireless operator up in North Wales. The Korean War was on at the time and some of my mates were drafted out there, but I ended up in Tripoli, Libya, at Leptis Magna. When I got back, I spent the last seven months of my term back at Oswestry as a brigadier’s duty driver.”

Robbie, who was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year honours list for his voluntary work for service personnel and veterans, speaks fondly of his time serving.

“To tell the truth, I thoroughly enjoyed my two years in the Army. Lots of guys didn’t, and don’t get me wrong, it had its good times and bad times. But I have such fond memories of the friends I made, the travel and being looked after.”

“There are a lot of guys who couldn’t get out of it quick enough. Once I was waiting on a train coming north in Crewe station at 3:30am. I got a tap on the shoulder and it was a guy I’d been in training with.

and there he was, asking me for a light. Two Redcaps saw us speaking and he ran off. They asked who I was speaking to, but I didn’t want to tell them who he was.

They checked me out, took my gun out, but he didn’t get caught that time. He eventually ended up getting 56 days in the glasshouse.”

When his two years of National Service were up, Robbie decided not to stick around.

“I was stupid. My brigadier took me aside one day and tried to encourage me to stay on. When I came home, I realised I wasn’t trained and I didn’t have a trade. I could have stayed in the Army. A few times I thought back, especially when I was on the pick and shovel, shall we say, really grafting.”

His interest in the military stems back to childhood, growing up in Thurso and seeing barrage balloons on Hoy during the Second World War. His father served as a gunner, which is how Robbie himself ended up in the Royal Artillery. He rues that this meant he never got to wear a kilt in the Army.

Most of his childhood friends joined the Highland Regiment, and it was with them that he first visited their local Legion club, back in 1955. Robbie already had ties, as his uncles and his father were members.

His involvement grew over the years, from local branch up to national. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of my involvement with Legion Scotland. Whether in the branch or the area or at national level, I’ve been very lucky in having great people working with me.”

He has represented Legion Scotland all over the country and the world, including a particularly memorable trip to Thailand in 2003.

“We were out there on the bridge on the River Kwai with some ex-prisoners of war. That was the most emotional I’ve ever been, with those guys, up through Hellfire Pass and on the bridge, showing us where they were imprisoned.”

Another moving trip was to the site of HMS Royal Oak and the Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery on Orkney.

“There were about 40 or 50 boy sailors who went down with the ship, and they’re all buried there. It’s a lovely cemetery, if you can call a cemetery lovely.”

Robbie loves to represent Legion Scotland when out and about, and even wears his Legion attire for train journeys to Edinburgh, “because it’s amazing the conversations I can get involved with, as people start asking questions. And, you know, it keeps me out of mischief because I’ve got to behave myself when I’m in that [attire].”

He has been a member for 50 years, and has served as National Chairman twice, through tough times for the organisation and his own ill health.

“I took a stroke on 6 December and I’ve recovered gradually. As you can hear, my speech wasn’t affected.

I don’t know if my wife’s happy about that! I’m hoping to be back fit and well before the conference.”

Although he is standing down at the Annual Conference at the end of May, he certainly won’t be letting the Legion become a stranger.

“I’m a member of the area and I like going to meetings because it keeps me in touch with the boys.

I can’t understand people who don’t have enthusiasm for it. It’s a wonderful organisation. All of my greatest memories are dealing with veterans. There is so much support we can give them and their families. I don’t think the public realise how much great work we do.”

PRESENTER AND comedian Alexander Armstrong has been given arctic survival training from Royal Marines cold weather experts on exercise in the freezing conditions of Norway.

The Pointless host had travelled to meet 3 Commando Brigade ahead of a bid to travel around the Arctic Circle and was given instruction on how to survive in the harsh, cold weather. Grateful for the Marines’ expert guidance, Armstrong said: “It has been extremely instructive. We had to pay attention and learn because this is a real situation that we could potentially find ourselves in.”

MEDALS FOR BOSNIAN FLOOD FIGHTERS SOLDIERS FROM The Royal Scots

Borderers 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland have received operational medals at their base in Holywood outside Belfast.

The troops’ contribution to peacekeeping on a recent tour of duty as part of the European Union Forces has been highly praised. Working alongside the Bosnia and Herzegovina Armed Forces, they quickly turned their military skills into humanitarian ones when heavy floods caused a state of emergency to be declared.

As a ‘high readiness reserve company’, the soldiers rescued families from isolated communities as rising water cut off food and energy supplies.

RAF flourish at Red Flag THE WORLD’S most intensive

air combat training exercise concluded in February at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, USA. Over the course of the threeweek Red Flag exercise, RAF Typhoon and Sentinel aircraft flew sorties against complex air defences designed to mirror what they would expect to encounter on a real operation.

During Red Flag, Typhoon fighters flew 150 sorties, with each pilot deployed taking the opportunity to gain experience of dropping one of the 25 Paveway IV precisionguided bombs used by the RAF on the exercise.

Paying tribute to recently departed Legion Scotland members from across the country DUNS

William (Bill) Waddell

Bill lost his battle with cancer on 19 February at the Knoll Hospital in Duns, with his wife Sheila by his side. He was a Duns man born and bred, leaving the town only when he served in the Scots Guards for three years. Upon his return, Bill gained an excellent reputation as a partner in a plumbing firm, and enjoyed football, fishing and golf in his free time.

He was an active member of the Legion, was branch standard bearer for many years, and played a very active part in the construction and enlargement of the club building.

He was generous with his time and effort, and seldom without a smile on his face.

He loved his family dearly and will be very much missed by them. His death leaves a hole too in the Duns branch that will be difficult to fill.

David Lloyd-Jones OBE

David shared his story with Legion Scotland for our

Voices of Veterans campaign very recently, as featured in our previous issue. His story was a truly fascinating and inspiring one, and we are greatly sadden to hear of his passing.

He served in World War II with the Royal Marines and later became a colonel and commandant of the Cadet Training Centre at Frimley Park, looking after 1,300 detachments based in schools.

HAWICK

Robert Readhead

Rob was a well-respected member and former chairman of Hawick branch committee.

He was staunchly committed to Royal British Legion Scotland and the motto of Service Not Self.

When the branch had to sell the club premises, Rob was instrumental in ensuring that the branch would survive. He has guided the

branch to gain respect and success through tough times.

Rob joined the 4th/5th Territorial Battalion of the King’s Own Scottish Borders and remained with them when they were renamed the C KOSB Company 2nd Battalion 52nd Lowland Volunteers, and he eventually retired after more than 20 years.

TURRIFF & DISTRICT

James Scott MBE

Jimmy served in France during WWII and was wounded at Dunkirk. He was later sent to Singapore where he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and worked on the Burma/Siam railway for three and a half years.

In 1947, he married Elizabeth

Watson, and they went on to have six children. He took great pride in his wonderful family, who cared for him when he needed it most.

Jimmy was a great support to the local community, and a driving force in fundraising and promotion for the Legion.

He was awarded Life Membership and a Badge in Gold for his services to the branch, was voted Citizen of the Year in 1988 and received an MBE in July 1999. He was an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to have known him.

N THE first six months of WWII alone, 30,000 men who had previously worked in agriculture enlisted in the armed forces. Farmers suddenly found themselves extremely under-staffed in a time when food production was essential to aid the war effort. The solution was the Women’s Land Army.

Established by the Board of Agriculture in 1917, the Women’s Land Army recruited healthy young women to work 50-hour weeks on farms across the UK. Farmers were reluctant to take on female farmhands, but the Land Girls quickly demonstrated their ability to do what had previously been considered men’s work.

In Scotland, we had our fair share of Land Girls, but we contributed much more following the creation of the Women’s Timber Corps (WTC) in May 1942. Women were recruited from the age of 17 and came to be known as ‘Lumberjills’.

One thousand women were dispersed across logging camps in Inverness-shire, Morayshire, and Argyllshire, where they felled trees, loaded lorries, used sawmills and tended to workhorses.

The WTC was disbanded in 1946, and in 2007 Forestry Commission Scotland paid tribute to the WTC by erecting a bronze sculpture in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park near Aberfoyle.

Ordinary Membership of Legion Scotland is available to women who served at least six months in the Women’s Land Army or WTC, in recognition of their part in the war effort at home.
