Training courses

The Royal Society of Biology aims to give biologists the tools they need to develop their careers and fulfil their potential. A major tool for biologists to achieve this is to partake in lifelong learning. We aim to make this process as simple as possible, by giving them the resources they require to increase their knowledge and skills, and to adapt to the ever developing industry. Our range of courses is extensive and is designed to suit a broad range of needs. They range from learning new laboratory techniques, to programming skills or even business approaches. The RSB offers both in-person and online training courses which give participants the flexibility to learn in their own time. These courses allow participants to learn new skills, maintain professional registration and refresh their knowledge. If you are interested, please visit our webpage for live training courses or our online learning platform where we hope you will find something of interest. INDUSTRY SKILLS CERTIFICATE Our exclusive Industry Skills Certificate has been specifically designed to support scientists’ employability. It demonstrates that participants have acquired the skills and knowledge required for a career move into industry. The certificate also supports those working towards the RSB’s Registered Scientist (RSci) status. Requirement: Minimum of 5 training courses within a 12-month period. TECHNICAL SKILLS CERTIFICATE Our Technical Skills Certificate has been specifically designed to support the skills development of technical staff working in higher education, industry or in a private laboratory. The certificate also supports those working towards the RSB’s Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) status. Requirement: Minimum of 5 training courses within a 12-month period.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) Engaging in CPD helps you keep up to date in order to maintain standards, and demonstrate your up to date knowledge and professional competence. CPD can contribute to maintaining your professional registration, and can be used to move up between membership grades. Members of the RSB have access to an online portal for recording CPD, which automatically accrues CPD points as you add new activities throughout the year. Any activity which has resulted in new learning and advances your skills as a biologist will qualify as CPD – and all the RSB training courses are CPD approved, meaning they will automatically be added to your CPD record once they are completed.

TRAINING COURSE APPROVAL The RSB is able to offer Training approval for external training courses, that would benefit our members. These courses will benefit from advertising on the RSB website, inclusion in members’ communications, and allocated CPD points.
