Winzig Haus Lichtenhainer (Hansa Brewery): Whether putting Teutonic twists on the familiar (German IPA, anyone?), or resurrecting obscure historical styles, Hansa’s beers awaken complacent palates. Their award-winning Lichtenhainer is no exception— a deliciously oddball combination of light, wheaty, sour and smoky.

Black Knight Schwarzbier (Fat Head’s Brewery): Fat Heads might be best known for IPAs, but when it comes to accolades, its German-style brews earn the highest praise. This deep, roasty black lager has been an award-winning brewpub staple from day one.

Eliot Ness Lager (Great Lakes Brewing Company): Prohibition agent and Cleveland safety director Eliot Ness was a regular at the bar that preceded Great Lakes Brewing Company’s brewpub. His namesake Vienna-style lager from Cleveland’s oldest brewery is toasty, malty and untouchably smooth.

Three Out of Five Gose (Bookhouse Brewing): Housed in the pre-Prohibition Baehr Brewing Company building, Bookhouse can’t help but delve into historical brewing recipes. Its gose is a perfect mix of traditional kettle souring techniques with modern levels of citrus and spice.

Piwo Grodziskie (Noble Beast Brewing Company): Street parties are a Cleveland tradition, including Dyngus Day—the Polish Easter Monday festival of fun, music and indulgence. Noble Beast busts out this light, smoky wheat brew yearly to kick off the post-Lenten fun.

[ By Jen Jones Donatelli ] For a true taste of Cleveland, look no further than The Polish Boy sandwich—a native culinary classic that Esquire magazine called “soul on white.” Satisfy your soul with this grilled kielbasa creation, housed in a bun and topped with French fries, coleslaw and BBQ sauce (or hot sauce, for a caliente kick). Seti’s Polish Boy food truck is a sure bet, along with Beckham’s B&M Bar-B-Que or Mabel’s BBQ, where top chef Michael Symon has dreamed up a “Polish Girl” counterpart with kielbasa and chopped pork. In Slavic Village, Saucisson has been slicing and dicing hand-cured meats and specially spiced sausages since 2013. Led by the “Lady Butchers” of Cleveland, Melissa Khoury and Penny Barend, Saucisson offers a refreshing, responsibly-minded modern take on the traditional corner butcher shop. Across town at the West Side Market, Frank’s Bratwurst keeps ‘em coming with bratwurst sandwiches served “Cleveland-style” with horseradish, ballpark mustard and sauerkraut. Austrian immigrants opened this popular food stand in 1970, and their family recipe still delivers almost 50 years later. Top off any self-respecting sausage spree at Happy Dog in Detroit Shoreway, where hot dogs (including a vegan option), beer and tater tots are the name of the game. With 50 toppings— including vegan mango chutney and white beer cheese fondue— it’s easy to design your own dog, smorgasbord-style. Buns out!
