Clevelander Tips I n Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.” If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.

Mark your calendars now for 3:13 p.m. on April 8, 2024—when we get a front-row seat to a celestial stunner. Cleveland sits along the path of totality for that day’s solar eclipse, meaning nearly four minutes of mid-afternoon darkness as the moon blocks the face of the sun. (Not to brag or anything, but that’s one of the longest durations of any major city.)

Another can’t-miss stop is the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s eclipse bash on University Circle. Over the weekend, CMNH plans to host “SolarFest: Eclipse Family Fun Days” with special programs and activities for sky-gazers of all ages. On Monday, it’s time for the main event: the “Total on the Oval” watch party. (How ‘bout this for FOMO? We won’t be back in an eclipse’s path of totality until 2444.)

TOTAL ECLIPSE FESTIVAL GUARDIANS HOME OPENER

Amidst all this eclipse excitement, the Cleveland Guardians also play their home opener — against the Chicago White Sox—on April 8. While the start time is still TBD, the eclipse will likely arrive sometime during pre-game festivities or the game itself. The Guards promise to embrace the moment, so stay tuned for details. Downtown Cleveland is one of the area’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. Significant renovations are slated for Erieview Tower, which is set to reopen as part of Marriott’s W brand with hotel and event space, offices and apartments. (The modernist skyscraper is designed by I.M. Pei, much like the nearby Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.) 45 Erieview is also in the works, converting the 16-story former Ohio Bell headquarters into a luxurious live-work community with lake views. aven’t you heard? A series of projects is cementing Northeast Ohio as an invigorating epicenter for development. Cleveland giant Sherwin-Williams is painting a bright future Downtown with a new global headquarters. The 36-story tower will utilize the “square point” aspects of neighboring buildings while making its own mark on the city skyline. The glass-sheathed HQ—along with a 600,000-square-foot R&D facility in Brecksville—is slated to add 400 jobs to the region. Meanwhile, the Opportunity Corridor is living up to its name with the arrival of Canon Healthcare USA, a medical imaging facility projected to bring another couple hundred jobs to the city.

Japan tech behemoth Canon Inc. is investing $300 million into a burgeoning Cleveland development site already bursting with quality jobs and innovative businesses. (Yep, the same people who make cameras!) Not to be outdone is the Cleveland Clinic, which recently announced $1.3 billion in capital projects (including a forthcoming Neurological Institute on its main campus). An expanded Cole Eye Institute and a new 400,000-square-foot pathogen research space are also on the way for the world-renowned health provider, helping to solidify Cleveland as a trailblazer city. The First Residents of the North Coast

Long before General Moses Cleaveland found his way to the banks of the Cuyahoga River in the 1790s, Indigenous peoples thrived in Ohio and especially enjoyed summering in Cleveland by the Cuyahoga. Agricultural towns were fortified with earthen walls and complex mounds that were mostly, unfortunately, destroyed by the 1800s. After frontier wars and forced relocation decimated the population, only a handful of American Indians remained in Cleveland. New York-transplant and businessman Chief Thunderwater created the Supreme Council of Indian Nations (a restoration of the Iroquois

Confederacy) in the 1930s. About 30 years later, Russell Means of the Lakota founded the Cleveland American Indian Center to offer job assistance and preserve American Indian identity. By the 1970s, Means had become an activist, organized public protests, and made Cleveland a launching pad for the American Indian Movement. As Greater Cleveland’s population grew, the Lake Erie Native American Council formed in 1990 to preserve their culture in Northeast Ohio. Its membership includes people from the Delaware or Lenape, Seneca and other nations within the Iroquois Confederacy. Alongside the 500-Year-Committee, 20 years of

protests succeeded in changing the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians and retiring the Chief Wahoo logo. Today, an estimated 3,700 American Indians live in Cuyahoga County, comprising .3% of the total population.

rowing up in the Glenville neighborhood, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony founding member Anthony “Krayzie Bone” Henderson secured his future early: He met his future bandmates while still in junior high school. Discovered by the late rapper Eazy-E, the hip-hop troupe put The Land on the map in the ’90s with hits such as “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” and Grammy-winning “Tha Crossroads.” Today, Henderson is giving back to the place where he grew up with his Spread The Love Foundation— a nonprofit elevating local communities through music industry education and workforce development. As Henderson puts it, he wants to teach “aspiring artists how to walk amongst the giants. Cleveland is like no other place. People are starting to recognize there is a lot of talent here.”

CREATIVES If Benton isn’t at the shop, she’s usually working on music. “I buy it, sell it, produce it, teach it. I’m surrounded by doing something I love,” said Benton.

Benton first fell in love with mixing music in the 90s. She would save her lunch money to buy cassettes at the now-closed Nikki’s Music on Buckeye Road. Nikki himself began to give her promo copies with remixed versions of songs, inspiring her to learn about samples and beat making. After graduating from Ohio University, Benton became a DJ. Her record-buying habit spun from her desire to sample from vinyl, eventually leading her to open her own shop. Benton’s been in her groove ever since.

At the epicenter of the action is Playhouse Square— home to the KeyBank Broadway Series, which will see iconic characters such as Fanny Brice, Marty McFly and Michael Jackson own the stage this season. As one of the country’s largest performing arts centers, Playhouse Square spans seven companies including Cleveland Play House and Great Lakes Theatre. At the former, dig into regional theatre productions including Langston Hughes’ transcendent “Black Nativity.” The lineup at the latter covers all the requisites in new ways—whether you’re laughing with “The Merry Wives of Windsor” or crying happy tears at the end of “A Christmas Carol.” In Lakewood, the Beck Center for the Arts mounts 230 performances annually, with “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” next on tap. s a child, Rashaun Dillard first explored art by drawing comic book heroes. Since then, his path has followed that of a traditional artist, working in acrylic and as a digital creator. Dillard’s paintings often contain social commentary, and he hopes his Voices of CLE work will stimulate productive conversations and a sense of togetherness.

A graduate of Cleveland School of the Arts, artist and muralist Rashaun Dillard knows the power and importance of using art as a platform for messages of hope and change. “I’d like to use my art to share the message of unity, our community experiencing tough times yet coming together in the aftermath to promote a change that we can use to teach and heal each other.”

See the proof at Wade Oval in University Circle, where a gorgeous pond reflects its scenic surroundings (which include both the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History). Your winter won’t be complete without a whirl on the Rink at Wade Oval, followed by a delicious hot cocoa. Speaking of ice skating, the Cleveland Foundation Skating Rink at Public Square is another thing to check off the winter bucket list. With the Terminal Tower

setting the backdrop and holiday lights making it extra-magical, it’s an epic way to experience Downtown’s most iconic outdoor destination. Less than a half-mile away is the Cleveland Mall, a series of public greenspaces first designed in 1903 to beautify the city’s civic center. (True story: the Mall is on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of the “City Beautiful” movement born during that era.) Today this gorgeous grassy expanse is flanked by some of Downtown’s most well-known buildings—but luckily, none of them block the Mall’s prime city and lake views. It’s no secret that University Circle plays home to an unusually high concentration of museums, cultural venues (such as Severance Hall, home to the Cleveland Orchestra) and educational institutions (such as top-ranked Case Western Reserve University). Wind your way through Wade Oval to visit the free Cleveland Museum of Art, or dig into the dinosaur life at a Museum of Natural History. For a deep-dive into Cleveland’s storied past, don’t miss Cleveland History Center, and make sure to stop and smell the roses—and orchids— at Cleveland Botanical Garden. Closer to Uptown, moCa hints at its contemporary art contents with an equally compelling exterior: a six-sided mirrored geometric feat by architect Fashid Moussavi. Detroit Shoreway If University Circle is Cleveland’s international art capital, Gordon Square Arts District (along the Detroit Shoreway) is the city’s bohemian quarter. Institutions like the Cleveland Public Theatre and the Capitol Theatre draw the terminally arty and interesting to local stages and indie cinema. MidTown Historic buildings have found thriving new life in MidTown—where the dollhouse-like Stager-Beckwith Mansion now houses the Children’s Museum of Cleveland, and music venues like the 1913-built Agora Theatre have undergone rocking renovations. MidTown is also home to the city’s oldest building still standing: Dunham Tavern. Thanks to its plum location on the RTA Healthline, MidTown also has plenty of shiny new buildings dotting its streetscape— with more on the way, such as the forthcoming Cleveland Foundation headquarters.
