In Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.” If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.

History

Cleveland has a proud history that is 227 years in the making. General Moses Cleaveland of the Connecticut Land Company came to the Western Reserve and founded the City of Cleveland in 1796. The name changed to its current spelling in 1831 when the “a” was dropped in order to fit the city’s name on a newspaper masthead.

Fun Facts

Cleveland is the home of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman, as well as a filming location for major motion pictures, including “A Christmas Story,” “The Avengers” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Oscar winners Paul Newman and Halle Berry hail from the region. So does Hall of Fame guitarist Joe Walsh, who honed his craft with The James Gang in the 1970s with the popular single “Funk #49.” LifeSavers candy, the modern golf ball and the electric streetlight are all Cleveland firsts invented right here in Cleveland.

Location + Population

Cleveland, located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST) in the State of Ohio within Cuyahoga County, is on the southern shore of Lake Erie, part of the Great Lakes Region.

Cleveland-Akron-Canton comprises the 15th largest combined metro area in the United States with more than 2 million residents in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and nearly 400,000 in the City of Cleveland.

Business

Cleveland has a $238 billion annual economy and is home to a number of companies that are on Fortune magazine’s list of the top 500 industrial and top 500 service companies in the United States, including KeyCorp, Sherwin-Williams, Eaton Corp and Progressive Insurance.

The Land is teeming with new construction and renovations. The circa-1918 Renaissance Cleveland Hotel is poised for a $62 million transformation into Hotel Cleveland. The Marriott chain is also behind a proposed $35 million conversion of the vacant University Hotel & Suites into the 189-room Delta Hotel—as well as plans to build Ohio’s first W Hotel inside the 40-story Erieview Tower near the Rock Hall.

Several of Cleveland’s historic buildings are providing the foundation for new hotels. What was once Union Trust Bank will become The Centennial, a boutique hotel that’s part of an ambitious mixed-use project, while the Baker Building is being converted into the 97-room Fidelity Hotel with a throwback feel to the Gilded Age. The rapidly expanding Midtown District soon will have another hotel option: a 125-room Dream Hotel built adjacent to the Masonic Temple.

Downtown Cleveland is one of the area’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. Significant renovations are slated for Erieview Tower, which is set to reopen as part of Marriott’s W brand with hotel and event space, offices and apartments. (The modernist skyscraper is designed by I.M. Pei, much like the nearby Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.) 45 Erieview is also in the works, converting the 16-story former Ohio Bell headquarters into a luxurious live-work community with lake views. Adjacent to SherwinWilliams’ new headquarters, 55 Public Square will house chef Rocco Whalen’s fully-reimagined Fahrenheit. Growing Neighborhoods

Exciting projects point to Cleveland’s future growth

MIDTOWN

Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network’s (MAGNET) tech-heavy innovation center unites Downtown Cleveland’s drive with Midtown’s creativity. Cleveland Foundation’s HQ also finds a home in Midtown, making this neighborhood a vital hub for business and ingenuity.

FAIRFAX

Innovation Square is set to bring jobs and new residents to Fairfax’s Opportunity Corridor. A centerpiece Meijer grocery store will be boosted by 700–800 market-rate housing units, bringing even more diversity into this historic area.

UNIVERSITY CIRCLE

Construction is underway for Circle Square, an ambitious complex overlooking University Circle. The 24-story Artisan Tower, located near Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, will be the tallest building in University Circle. Construction of the mixedincome Library Lofts coincides with that of the Artisan.

Did You Know?

Cleveland landed the #2 spot on Zillow’s list of hot housing markets in 2023, thanks to “high market velocity and job growth.”

A Foundation of Innovation

Haven’t you heard? A series of projects is cementing Northeast Ohio as an invigorating epicenter for development. Cleveland giant Sherwin-Williams is painting a bright future Downtown with a new global headquarters. The 36-story tower will utilize the “square point” aspects of neighboring buildings while making its own mark on the city skyline. The glass-sheathed HQ—along with a 600,000-square-foot R&D facility in Brecksville—is slated to add 400 jobs to the region.

Meanwhile, the Opportunity Corridor is living up to its name with the arrival of Canon Healthcare USA , a medical imaging facility projected to bring another couple hundred jobs to the city.

Big

center Cleveland as a world-class city for development.

Japan tech behemoth Canon Inc. is investing $300 million into a burgeoning Cleveland development site already bursting with quality jobs and innovative businesses. (Yep, the same people who make cameras!)

Not to be outdone is the Cleveland Clinic , which recently announced $1.3 billion in capital projects (including a forthcoming Neurological Institute on its main campus). An expanded Cole Eye Institute and a new 400,000-square-foot pathogen research space are also on the way for the world-renowned health provider, helping to solidify Cleveland as a trailblazer city.

CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY

Double majoring in science and humanities? A recent $2 million “Experimental Humanities” pledge will help make that easier.

BALDWIN WALLACE UNIVERSITY

Flex your problemsolving skills, build your own lab equipment and collaborate with the community on projects.

JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY

In-person classes not your thing? Their online MBA ranks among the nation’s best in 2023.

CUYAHOGA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Two-year colleges are just as valuable, and Tri-C’s four local campuses prove that—with plenty of degree options.

R CREATIVES CLEVELAND

icky Smith is all about paying it forward. In 2013, the Cleveland native was divorced and homeless in Los Angeles. He used what money he had to buy pizza for some other homeless people. Smith shared the experience online, and soon people in other cities were following his lead.

Enter Smith’s nonprofit R.A.K.E. (Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere). Each year, Smith embarks on a nationwide tour of spreading kindness—from surprising teachers in Arizona with a pizza lunch to DJ-ing a “senior prom” at a retirement center to hosting comedy shows to raise money for nonprofits.

“I do it with passion, or I don’t do it at all,” says the charismatic comedian. “And that comes from Cleveland. That comes from representing our city.”

Several tribes of Indigenous people lived in the region that became Greater Cleveland

Long before General Moses Cleaveland found his way to the banks of the Cuyahoga River in the 1790s, Indigenous peoples thrived in Ohio and especially enjoyed summering in Cleveland by the Cuyahoga. Agricultural towns were fortified with earthen walls and complex mounds that were mostly, unfortunately, destroyed by the 1800s.

After frontier wars and forced relocation decimated the population, only a handful of American Indians remained in Cleveland. New York-transplant and businessman Chief Thunderwater created the Supreme Council of Indian Nations (a restoration of the Iroquois

MUSIC REVOLUTION

The House That Rock Built

Stodgy museums, step to the side: The glass-enclosed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a hip-shaking, guitar-flinging reminder of why Cleveland is ground zero for world-famous music. Memorabilia immortalizes the radio DJs and recording artists who invented the genre, while special galleries honor those who paved the way (such as Cleveland native Leo Mintz, the former Record Rendezvous owner largely considered one of the founding fathers of rock). And much like rock-and-roll itself, the multilevel museum just keeps on evolving.

ROCK HALL INDUCTEE EXHIBIT

Celebrate the newest crop of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees with an in-depth exhibit that features gear, clothes, memorabilia, music and more. Whether you’re a Duran Duran devotee, Lionel Richie stan, Eurythmics enthusiast or a card-carrying fan club member for any of the other members of the class of 2022, you’ll find aweinspiring fare on display.

HIP-HOP, IT DON’T STOP

Hey hip-hop, 50 looks good on you!

In June, the Rock Hall will celebrate “50 Years of Hip-Hop” with a brandnew exhibit of the same name—along with events, concerts and other programs. The exhibit will celebrate inductees such as Jay-Z, N.W.A, Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, and more, while also exploring the musical and cultural impact of the genre.

Did You Know?

Celebrate 50 years of Hip-Hop at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Local radio DJ Alan Freed is credited with playing rhythm and blues records on air and coining the term “rock ‘n’ roll” in the 1950s.

The heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll is beating louder than ever

Clevelanders are music fanatics, so it’s no surprise the best spots to catch live music are banging. Looking for sweeping views of Downtown and award-winning jazz and blues tunes? Head to the BOP STOP, stat. The jazz keeps on going at local staple Nighttown, set to receive an exciting facelift under new ownership, and Frederick’s Wine & Dine, which keep things smooth in Warrensville Heights with a robust menu and upbeat jazz.

We can’t blame you if you get starstruck taking in a show at The Agora; after all, the club is a bona fide rock history legend. Likewise, the Grog Shop is a longtime favorite hosting everything from hip-hop to indie rock. Hit the dancefloor in the mega-hip B Side Liquor Lounge, conveniently located downstairs from the Grog Shop. And cult favorite No Class is a dive bar perfect for catching an underground band or up-and-coming rapper.

MOVING NEEDLE

Would-be DJs and vinyl aficionados, and rock are your My Mind’s Eye Records, which does double-duty as both retail shop and record label. More into reggae, hip-hop, and jazz? Smooth it out at Brittany’s Record Shop. For used LPs, music memorabilia and retro tees, let Blue Arrow point the way, or hit up Bedford-based The Vinyl Groove for vintage equipment, along with used and new records.

Larchmere PorchFest (June 24)

No “get off my lawn” vibes here. This family-friendly event actually welcomes audiences of all stripes to gather in the Larchmere neighborhood for live music across a wide variety of genres (from country to hip-hop to Zydeco).

Rock Hall Live (July-August)

Music appreciation doesn’t only happen inside the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during summer. Join the crowds on the Plaza to enjoy not just the outdoor concert series, but also goodies from local beer and food trucks.

Wonderstruck (July 8-9)

Brittany Benton is Cleveland’s own music icon. Not only is Benton the owner of Brittany’s Record Shop in Ohio City and record label yesplsrecords, but she’s also the talented “DJ Red-I;” a member of S.Y.S. Band; and a Spanish and music teacher at Mastery School of Hawken.

If Benton isn’t at the shop, she’s usually working on music. “I buy it, sell it, produce it, teach it. I’m surrounded by doing something I love,” said Benton.

Benton first fell in love with mixing music in the 90s. She would save her lunch money to buy cassettes at the now-closed Nikki’s Music on Buckeye Road. Nikki himself began to give her promo copies with remixed versions of songs, inspiring her to learn about samples and beat making.

After graduating from Ohio University, Benton became a DJ. Her record-buying habit spun from her desire to sample from vinyl, eventually leading her to open her own shop. Benton’s been in her groove ever since.

In the cozy space of Transformer Station, a hook and crane still hang—an ever-present reminder of the past amid a thoughtfully curated array of contemporary art. Set in a 1924 railroad substation, this free museum has become a highlight in Hingetown. At nearby SPACES, the conversation between local and global artists ignites into enduring, provocative work (with a neon “ART” sign leading the way).

Across town in University Circle, a giant silver hand beckons art aficionados into moCa’s four-story geometric feat of architecture. This contemporary art museum continues to push the envelope with several new exhibitions each year. Film buffs are free to geek out at Cinematheque, which the New York Times hailed as “one of the country’s best repertory movie theaters.”

As a child, Rashaun Dillard first explored art by drawing comic book heroes. Since then, his path has followed that of a traditional artist, working in acrylic and as a digital creator. Bite into Cleveland’s culinary culture

Where to Eat Right Now

CORDELIA

Clevelanders had lofty expectations for the successor replacing “Iron Chef” Michael Symon’s Lola last summer, and Vinnie Cimino’s team came in hot—delivering in both portion size and prowess in the kitchen. Take the time to meander through the “Bellie Up” menu for an adventurous experience at the chef’s whim and see why Tasting Table crowned Cordelia one of its 22 best restaurants in 2022.

BARTLEBY

Any sadness over Crop Bistro shuttering likely subsided as the buzzy Bartleby inhabited the space in Fall 2022. Located in Ohio City, the project brought a maximalist decor overhaul to the historic United Bank Building that Cleveland Magazine called “otherworldly.” Restaurateur Morgan Yagi promises “fun dining, not fine dining” as patrons enjoy accessible yet upscale American dishes in cozy banquettes beneath the limbs of a sprawling ficus tree.

JAJA

With a jaw-dropping dining room crowned by a canopy of foliage and a retractable roof that’s unfurled to welcome the summer temperatures, a trip to this splurge-worthy steakhouse will transport you to an entirely different time and place. Intimate groups can devour decadent shareable meat platters charred atop a 20-foot Argentinianstyle wood-fired grill, or pick their poison from the craft cocktail menu imagined by award-winning mixologist Jeremy Owen Barrett.

LULO KITCHEN & JUICE BAR

When warmer weather calls for lighter fare, head over to the Warehouse District for Latin fusion. Make a date of it: You can score affordable parking near this restaurant and cold-pressed juicery, located on RTA’s complimentary trolley route— making it a perfect jumping-off point for some Downtown exploration. Hydrate for your journey with your pick of six hand-crafted lemonades.

Rise & Dine

Let’s be honest: any breakfast spot you choose in this foodie town is sure to be egg-cellent. For a taste of newness, eat with your eyes first at Sophie la Gourmande, bringing strong Parisian vibes to the Cedar-Lee Arts District. Sip on a honey lavender latte alongside your croissant at this café and patisserie. More of a meat-and-potatoes type?

Try Tremont-based Martha on the Fly’s potato crispies—topped with sausage and a fried egg.

As the sun rises over the Playhouse Square chandelier, order The Sunrise at Yours Truly: eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast and coffee. Nearby in the Warehouse District, Luna Bakery & Café’s

EPICENTERS OF EATS

That package of local gourmet goodies you just shamelessly devoured? It probably came from Central Kitchen—a craft food incubator where startups like PUR Spices and Holmes

Mouthwatering Applesauce first got things cooking. Drop into its retail storefronts for carry-out cravings like a malty Cleveland Bagel, gooey pizza from Mulberry’s or a family feast of plantbased Panamanian fare from Vegan Vybez.

Dine Waterside

Waterfront dining is a breeze in Cleveland—the only tough part is choosing where to eat. In the Flats, Collision Bend Brewing offers a variety of house beers, wood-fired pizzas and specialty cocktails on the Cuyahoga. Down the street, the menu at Alley Cat Oyster Bar resembles an East Coast meets West affair, featuring an array of poké bowls and New England oysters.

Also in the Flats is BrewDog Cleveland , where there’s plenty of room for everyone. (Four-legged friends included.) Choose from one of 28 beers on tap and find a spot on the spacious patio to enjoy river views and outdoor games. Across the

Cuyahoga down in Rivergate Park, Merwin’s Wharf serves comforting pub fare best enjoyed from its expansive patio.

Further Downtown, take in views of Voinovich Park, the Cleveland skyline and Lake Erie while sampling the tacos and house margaritas at Nuevo Modern Mexican & Tequila Bar. In Lakewood, Pier W has been a local favorite since 1965—thanks to its upscale dining experience and panoramic views of Lake Erie. Surf and turf shine on the dinner menu, while Sunday is all about the brunch buffet.

Beer Up!

Tops of the Hops

Consider these new breweries your beer lover’s bucket list

FOUR PAWS BREWING

Set to open this spring, Four Paws Brewing Co. is a labor of love and collaboration with Red Wagon Farm in Columbia Station. Bring Fido and set up shop at a picnic table with some Honey Kolsch or Downward (Hop) Dog.

MIDNIGHT OWL

Local beer lovers are sure to give a hoot when this brewery opens its doors in Shaker Heights— especially with former Goldhorn Brewery head brewer Joel Warger and his wife at the helm.

THE CLEVELAND BREWERY

After outgrowing its location on East 185th Street, this brewery has found its forever home in the Waterloo Arts District. Hang in “The Treelawn” to enjoy live music, and keep your eye out for collabs with other local faves such as R&D Sausage and Six Shooter Coffee.

CLEVELAND’S CRAFT BREWING PEDIGREE IS THE REAL DEAL

BEER GARDEN BLITZ

It’s a scientific fact: Beer tastes better when you drink it outdoors. Ground zero for local craft brewing is Great Lakes Brewing Company, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2023. Nearby is Market Garden Brewery —where an outdoor beer garden and tables out front afford great people-watching on West 25th Street. Closer to Playhouse Square but with a straight-outta-Germany feel is Hofbräuhaus, where dirndl-clad servers make it feel like Oktoberfest every day. And in The Flats, BrewDog’s patio keeps it rolling riverside with fire pits and outdoor games like shuffleboard. Feel more like a throwback to the days of yore? What was once the Atlantic Beer Garden in the late 1800s is now Forest City Brewery.

Brew Voyage

From east (Mentor) to west (Amherst) to south (Strongsville), the Cleveland Brewery Passport covers a lot of ground with CLE’s growing craft beer scene—spanning 42 breweries all within a 30-mile radius of Downtown. Check-in to breweries using the mobile passport and rack up points and rewards along the way. Bon beer voyage!

URBAN SPACES

Cleveland gets it right with its urban sanctuaries and inviting greenspaces. Take part in the North Coast Namaste yoga series, play some outdoor bocce or snap a selfie with the Cleveland Script Sign.

At the city’s heart is the Cleveland Mall, a series of public greenspaces first designed in 1903 to beautify the city’s civic center. (True story: the Mall is on the National Register

of Historic Places as an example of the “City Beautiful” movement born during that era.) Today this gorgeous grassy expanse is flanked by some of Downtown’s most well-known buildings—but luckily, none of them block the Mall’s prime views of the city and lake.

And who could forget Public Square, one of Downtown’s most iconic outdoor destinations? Grab a healthy bowl from REBoL and soak in the sights—and sounds—this summer with the “Square Sounds” music series on weekdays with the Terminal Tower as your backdrop.

THE FOREST CITY

Cleveland earns its nickname with picturesque parks

CLEVELAND METROPARKS

Each spring, Northeast Ohio bursts alive in a dazzling array of natural beauty—and there’s no better place to scope this sensational change of scenery than the Metroparks. Affectionately known as “The Emerald Necklace,” this local gem boasts 18 diverse reservations spanning more than 24,000 acres. Ride bikes on wooded trails, drop a fishing line into the Rocky River or picnic along the shore of Lake Erie.

CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Count your lucky stars that Ohio’s only national park is right here on CLE’s doorstep. Hike the Towpath Trail. Feel the cool spray of Brandywine Falls. Stand in wonder atop the Ledges Overlook as trees stretch out beneath you as far as the eyes can see. (Warning: goosebump-inducing views may occur.) Offering unparalleled access to all of this postcard-perfect scenery is the 26-mile Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

HOLDEN ARBORETUM

Besides looking like a real-life Monet painting, this Kirtland wonderland offers something for everyone. Walk among the treetops on the 500-foot-long Murch Canopy Walk, or climb the 120-foot-tall Kalberer Emergent Tower for jaw-dropping views of the surrounding beauty. (Squint and you might even be able to see Lake Erie.) Back on terra firma, those seeking a quieter pace can amble through 3,500+ acres of leafy forests and verdant botanical gardens.

LAKE VIEW CEMETERY

Steeped in history, these grounds are soulfully designed to reflect the healing power and peaceful serenity of the outdoors. From trees that predate the founding of Cleveland to the splash of springtime color on Daffodil Hill, the cemetery artfully balances the somber gravity of remembrance with the life-affirming joy of nature. While exploring the grounds, don’t miss Wade Memorial Chapel (with its Tiffany-designed interior) or the James A. Garfield Memorial.

KIDDING AROUND

Pack the van for family adventure day

Fun Centers

A TICKET TO RIDE

Call it Cedar Point, or just call it kid heaven. The Sandusky-based amusement park not only has 18 thrillinducing coasters, but also plenty of family-friendly fare. Along with a dizzying array—pun intended—of kids’ rides, families can go panning for real gemstones at Fort Sandusky Mining Co., splash their way through Cedar Point Shores water park, hang with Snoopy or become guest conductors on the C.P. & L.E. Railroad.

PARK N’ PLAY

As America’s oldest “kiddieland,” Memphis Kiddie Park has offered old-school family fun since 1952. With 11 kiddie rides for children under 50 inches tall, a mini-golf course and classic carnival concessions, this landmark is sure to check all the boxes on your little one’s list. Take a spin on the pint-sized Ferris Wheel, ride the train or take a whirl on the Little Dipper (the oldest working steel coaster in North America!).

THE SWING OF THINGS

Choose your own adventure! Swings-N-Things offers interactive activities for kids of all ages— including batting cages, go-karts, mini golf, bumper boats, mini bowling lanes, a game room, a Kids Korner playground, paintball and a new outdoor laser tag experience. Sensory overload? Wind down in the taproom and wine bar while you watch the kids do their thing.

MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY

Move over, WWE: the real Main Event is right here in Cleveland (or Avon, to be exact). Play on at the arcade with 100+ games, or get your game on with tried-and-true faves like billiards, shuffleboard, laser tag, bowling or mini-golf. Got some daredevils in the bunch? Rise above it all on the gravity ropes, suspended 20 feet over the venue.

A+ OUTINGS

Mom was right: learning really can be fun. Peek through a periscope and learn about WWII life at U.S.S. Cod Submarine, a National Historic Landmark offering self-guided tours. Hale Farm & Village lets the whole family step back in time to walk through a log schoolhouse from the 1850s or watch a blacksmith heat and shape metal jewelry.

Save your dollars by visiting the free Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Money Museum, replete with a 23-foot-tall money tree decorated with dangling dollars. (And that’s just one of nearly two dozen interactive currency-themed exhibits!) At the Pro Football Hall of Fame, kids can also see how they measure up— literally! Try on football helmets or test referee skills with instant replay.

And located inside a refurbished Victorian mansion, The Children’s Museum of Cleveland provides a one-of-a-kind space where kids can engage in water play, pretend play and everything in between.

SWEET THINGS

Life gets a little sweeter with every visit to b.a. Sweetie Candy Company—aka the largest candy store in America. The nostalgic treats lining their shelves bring back treasured childhood memories.

If candy doesn’t quench your appetite, Mitchell’s Ice Cream will keep you cool in the summer heat. Choose from over a dozen flavors at any of their nine locations around town. And choc out Malley’s Chocolates for the cure to every cocoa craving.

Keep cool in the summer heat with a scoop of Mitchell’s Ice Cream.

Yay, Science!

Wow your little ones with these STEM-

Ready for something wild?

See more than 2,000 animals at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Family faves include an Australian Outback train ride past bounding wallabies and the thrilling simulated tropical storm inside the RainForest.

Once a historic power plant, Greater Cleveland Aquarium overflows with aquatic encounters. At the stingray touch pool, tiny hands are welcome to feel the rays’ smooth skin as they glide by.

STEM comes to life at Great Lakes Science Center ! Encourage curiosity and experimentation at hundreds of hands-on exhibits, or watch breathtaking natural wonders on the six-story Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater screen.

Currently open during renovations, Cleveland Museum of Natural History offers everything from ecosystem education to a look at galaxies far, far away. Kids explore outdoor walkways while meeting wildlife friends (like “Spaghetti” the bald eagle) along the path.

Clevelanders aren’t squares, but we do have two: Euclid Avenue connects Public Square and Playhouse Square. In between, you’ll discover newly built apartments, celebrated restaurants, stay-up-til-dawn spots and family-friendly sites. Get a group and go to The Flats for grub and games, or take the kids on a walking tour and check things off the Cleveland bucket list. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a music mecca by the Lake, and nearby Great Lakes Science Center makes science fun. (Plus, Dippin’ Dots!) Progressive Field and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse offer some of the best in pro sports and entertainment.

TASTE

From sunrise to sundown, the Downtown dining scene is ready to make your day. Wake up at one of two Phoenix Coffee locations, or take a leisurely brunch at Betts inside the Kimpton Schofield Hotel. (Grab-and-go options are also available if you’re headed to a Guardians game. Win-win.) For lunch, go find out why Cleveland Sandwich Co. was hailed “Best of Cleveland” by Cleveland Magazine, or hit the new Geraci’s Slice Shop location for a gooey pizza pie.

Cleveland is a city with world-class experiences without the world-class ego.

Once dinner hits, let your taste buds lead the way to buzzy spots like Goma (sushi); Marble Room (steaks and seafood); Acqua di Luca (Mediterranean cuisine); Jade (New Asian); or Butcher & The Brewer (brewpub). End the day with a “cheers” at always-busy (and rightfully so) Masthead Brewing Co.

SHOP

Cleveland has “retail therapy” written all over the city. Start at Cleveland Clothing Co., where it’s always tee time. Show off your Cleveland pride—and instill some in others— by gifting souvenirs people actually want. Just down the street, make pour decisions at Heinen’s wine tasting machines, or grab some organic produce or a gourmet readymade dish.

Not in the mood for food? Inside the 5th Street Arcades, DIY inspo abounds at Coco’s Chalky Paints, while Intro Boutique stocks affordable contemporary and business-casual options with accessories to match. Tower City’s revival offers head-turning couture pieces from Infinite Boutique; statement bags in every color from In My Bag Collection; and luxury sneakers for men at The Feet Geeks.

PLAY

All three of Cleveland’s pro sports teams do their thing here—tailgate before a Browns game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, or get a doubleheader of Guardians baseball in at Progressive Field. (You can also cheer on the Cavs at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse come basketball season.)

More into shows over sports? Playhouse Square is your spot for Broadway shows, while outdoor Jacobs Pavilion attracts national acts with a side of skyline. Fun is the name of the game in The Flats, with a lively row of riverfront restaurants and nightclubs. Bet on a good time at JACK Casino, or taste your way down East 4th Street with a nightcap at comedy club Pickwick & Frolic

For family-friendly fare, look no further than the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Great Lakes Science Center

Local Tip

If your love of great architecture is rivaled only by your love for unique shopping finds, the historic 5th Street Arcades are calling your name.

Foodies and fans of craft beer call Ohio City’s Market District their urban oasis. Just across the Cuyahoga River, west of Downtown, the city’s yellow-bricked West Side Market has been home to haggle-friendly meat, seafood and veggie vendors for more than 100 years. Yet it’s Ohio City’s Victorian-era homes, boutique eateries and famous craft brewers (like Great Lakes Brewing Co.) that have made the neighborhood one of the city’s symbols for urban renewal (where hip meets heritage). The neighborhood also earns cool points thanks to the entrepreneurial and artsy Hingetown district, and let’s not forget the new kid on the block: INTRO, a massive 297-unit apartment complex with a rooftop pool and instant hotspots like Edda Coffee and modern steakhouse Jaja.

OHIO CITY

BREWERY HOP

NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT

As the brewery that started it all, Great Lakes Brewing Co. is the perfect gateway to the Ohio City “brewery district.” Ever since GLBC more or less sparked Ohio’s craft brewing movement in the late 1980s, brew pubs and tap rooms have been popping up all around town—from Market Garden to Hansa to Bookmark to North High Saucy Brew Works provides much-needed sustenance with signature pizza and small-batch coffee menus alongside its craft beer lineup. End the night at Nano Brew, where you’ll find 20-some beers on draft and a locally sourced kitchen that stays open until 2 a.m.

This is where you come to pay homage to the brewery that started it all.

Local Tip

What better place to get fired up than at the Glass Bubble Project ? Whether flying solo or hanging out with a group, aspiring glassblowers can make like they’re in Murano.

GOOD MOOD FOOD

Ohio City is the perfect pick for carefully crafted cuisine with a side of positive vibes. Stop in Juneberry Table for buckwheat chocolate banana pancakes (and stay for the boochy mama kombucha). Want bubbly and a late brunch? Head to Bright Side for unique croissant-waffle entrées, or pick your Parisian delight at quaint Le Petit Triangle Café. Camping-themed Pioneer will also make a happy camper out of you with wood-fired meats and drinks from the Airstream bar.

Top chefs like Jeremy Umansky and Doug Katz also call Ohio City home. Umansky’s Eastern European menu at Larder changes seasonally with delicious offerings like smoked eggplant parm, while Katz’s Amba offers small plates with big flavors for Indian fusion to remember. And no matter where you dine, Mason’s Creamery provides the perfect dessert course, serving up homemade ice cream all summer long.

HUNT

Visit The Hangar in Hingetown for craft cocktails to-go, then browse the hut-shaped shops at City Goods—home to over 20 diverse brands with a focus on women- and minorityowned businesses. Skincare, vintage paper art and custom lamps are just a few things to snatch up. On select dates, you can also catch the Cleveland Bazaar pop-up at Market Square with live music and one-of-a-kind finds from dozens of rotating vendors.

Spending a day exploring The Land can be hunger-inducing, so why not pop into the historic West Side Market for a bite?

Cambodian, Mexican and Parisian cuisine share space with over 60 vendors selling meats, seafood and exotic spices.

1 Sink your teeth into Larder’s inventive deli food.

2 Enjoy drinks at local favorite Bright Side.

3 Shop the Hangars for local wares at City Goods.

4 Three cheers to Great Lakes Brewing Co.!

This blue-collar neighborhood balances Cleveland’s big city feel with cozy, small town charm. Minutes from Downtown, Tremont is one of Cleveland’s oldest communities, and for all we know, might just be stuck in time. Just look at those old cottages, bygone neighborhood bars, beautiful churches and cordial local characters. Look closer and notice those come-as-you-are bars are sandwiched between Food Network-famous restaurants, modern housing, art galleries and even a pop culture monument (A Christmas Story House and Museum).

Ninja City

Detroit Shoreway

If University Circle is Cleveland’s international art capital, Gordon Square Arts District (along the Detroit Shoreway) is the city’s bohemian quarter. Institutions like the Cleveland Public Theatre and the Capitol Theatre draw the terminally arty and interesting to local stages and indie cinema. The hip and hungry seek out bistros and bars from Happy Dog to Luxe, and urban greenery like the lakefront’s Edgewater Park attracts everyone from dog-walkers to desperate surfboarders, while Gordon Square’s old homes and elegant mansions create a stately backdrop.

West Park

The party moves to Kamm’s Corners after the Downtown parade on St. Patrick’s Day. Irish pubs like Public House attract barflies with Gaelic football, rugby and live Celtic music, while walkers explore hobby shops, the Kamm’s Corners’ Sunday Farmers Market and the historic Alger Cemetery, resting place of Oswald Kamm (that guy the community’s named after). Nestled between Downtown and the airport, it’s a great locale to grab a Guinness or eat everything from Ethiopian (Habesha) to Thai ( Thai Elephant).

Local Tip

Cleveland’s comic book legacy continues with long-time draws like Carol & John’s Comic Book Shop keeping it quirky and homegrown for more than 30 years.

OLD BROOKLYN

Once the nation’s leading producer of greenhouse vegetables, diverse dining options continue to grow in this west side neighborhood. Sweet tooths can nosh on donuts at Jack Frost, then caffeinate at Metropolitan Coffee. Travel the globe by sampling

“Jah-potle” dishes at Irie Jamaican Kitchen, followed by the flavorful taste of Guatemalan cuisine at El Rinconcito Chapin. Or just cozy up at home by pairing cheeses at Old Brooklyn Cheese Company with the bountiful selection of wines at Opal on Pearl .

Local Tip

Get wicked at Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick. It’s the first occult museum in the country. (We’re not your basic witches here in Cleveland.)

Delicious bites and fun nights are what’s on the menu in AsiaTown. Start your exploration at perennial dim sum favorite Li Wah, followed by a stroll around Asia Plaza to shop for lanterns, tea sets or silk dresses. (Love to cook Asian cuisine at home? Don’t leave without visiting Park to Shop grocery store, where the aisles are lined with rare finds and gourmet staples.) Get your bubble tea fix at Koko Bakery, or try one of Hong Kong’s tastiest street foods at Ball Ball Waffle. Wind it up with karaoke your way in a private room at Galaxy KTV

MidTown

Historic buildings have found thriving new life in MidTown—where the dollhouse-like Stager-Beckwith Mansion now houses the Children’s Museum of Cleveland, and music venues like the 1913-built Agora Theatre have undergone rocking renovations. MidTown is also home to the city’s oldest building still standing: Dunham Tavern. Thanks to its plum location on the RTA Healthline, MidTown also has plenty of shiny new buildings dotting its streetscape— with more on the way, such as the forthcoming Cleveland Foundation headquarters.

Local Tip

With its convenient location, Cafe Phix is the easy choice for seasonal drinks and the fan-favorite Breve Bomb—a 3-layer beverage of rich syrup, halfand-half, and espresso topping.

FAIRFAX

Amid the neighborhood’s rapidly changing landscape thanks to ongoing development by the Cleveland Clinic, Fairfax remains rooted in tradition. Theatre fans can catch a show at Karamu House (the country’s oldest African American theater still in existence), while architecture buffs will want to take in the area’s historic churches. On the foodie front, stop by the new Angie’s Soul Food Café location for real-deal Southern soul food. Central Kitchen’s food hub also recently took root here to empower local craft food entrepreneurs.

Local Tip

Rumi’s Market & Grill invites patrons to snack on Mediterranean favorites, then stock up on groceries at their international market.

1.

Free to the public, the Cleveland Museum of Art houses some 45,000 art pieces spanning 6,000 years, notably its Asian and medieval European collections.

2.

With a menu focused on authentic and adventurous French cuisine, a first-class dining experience awaits at L’Albatros Brasserie.

Circle

The bold and the brainy call the art and educational neighborhood of University Circle their Cleveland capital. The districts of Wade Oval and Uptown have perhaps the greatest concentration of business, botany, medicine and art learning centers on the globe within one square mile — from the campuses of Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA). It’s all easily accessible from Downtown using the award-winning RTA HealthLine.

Head down to the Uptown District for the Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MOCA’s) revolving exhibits of cuttingedge art.

Hough

If Atlas Obscura were a place, it just might be this near East Side neighborhood—home to some of the city’s most under-the-radar spots. Raise a glass at Chateau Hough, a community-minded, one-of-a-kind urban winery. Next, swing out to League Park and the Baseball Heritage Museum, which shares multicultural stories of baseball’s past and brings it alive on the field where Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio once played.

GLENVILLE

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s quietly Cleveland’s coolest neighborhood! Check out the birthplace of Superman’s creator, or walk along the city’s most multicultural mile, aka the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, with 35+ gardens honoring the many nationalities represented in The Land. And attention shoppers: don’t miss the mixed-use GlenVillage complex, home to Black-owned businesses such as Lioness Barber and Vitiman Kandie

ST. CLAIR/SUPERIOR

People from all walks of life come together in St. Clair Superior to form an amazing community — one rich with manufacturing, art and design, singular shopping experiences and unparalleled dining options. (Cases in point: Kafela and Marie’s Restaurant.) Artists-in-waiting can find their sweet spot at the Hamilton Collaborative complex, home to woodworking workshop Soulcraft CLE , motorcycle hub Skidmark Garage and more.

ReBuilders XChange

This Cleveland neighborhood has been revitalized into a flourishing center of community and commerce. Want an out-of-the-box shopping experience where shipping containers double as stores? Check out BOXSPOT, home to JB Grill (where you can try the Polish Boy). Nearby Rid-All Green Partnership uses urban agriculture to not only bring healthy, locally grown produce to the community, but also to educate the next generation.

Little Italy

Food, faith and the famous Feast of the Assumption Festival all help define this little Italian village, located at the base of Murray Hill. First settled in the 19th century by Italian stonemasons and artisans, Little Italy today is a buffet of Italian eateries and bakeries, including Cleveland’s oldest restaurant (Guarino’s). Community and spirituality also commune in proud religious and social centers like the Holy Rosary Church and the Alta House

Shaker Square

As the oldest shopping district in Ohio, Shaker Square entertains day and night. Minutes from Downtown, take advantage of two light-rail Rapid Transit lines to reach the square’s four quadrants. Just be prepared to argue over where to eat (Edwins or Zanzibar), where to shop (Fashions by Fowler or Dave’s Supermarket) and where to have fun (Atlas Cinemas). Just leave time for Larchmere Boulevard, Cleveland’s art and antiques district (with fine folks like Loganberry Books and Batuqui Brazilian).

What’s New

Set in a charming old house in Larchmere, the globally-focused Poppy arrives fresh on the dining scene courtesy of revered Salt+ team Jill Vedaa and Jessica Parkison.

SLAVICVILLAGE

With a landscape dotted with historic churches and cultural centers, Slavic Village embraces its rich immigrant past while welcoming residents and visitors alike for culinary delights. Let the “Lady Butcher” of Saucisson delight the carnivore in you, or get a heaping helping of affordable eats at Red Chimney. Craving some muchneeded comfort (food)? Marsha’s Soul Food Café is calling. In one of Cleveland’s oldest neighborhoods, it’s impossible not to feel (and taste!) the history everywhere you go.

Local Tip

Known for its industrial roots, Slavic Village keeps the surprises coming with outdoor attractions (such as Mill Creek Falls and Morgana Bluffs).

One look at the vibrant Zoetic Walls murals that adorn the streets of the Waterloo Arts District, and it’s clear that you’ve entered one hella creative community. The neighborhood offers ample opportunity to tap into your own inner artist—from weaving and fabric arts at Praxis Fiber Workshop to thought-provoking contemporary art at Waterloo Arts Gallery. Prefer to appreciate rather than create?

See a show at indie music mecca Beachland Ballroom and Tavern, or take a leisurely stroll through the area’s many art galleries.
