In Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.” If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.

History

Cleveland has a proud history that is 227 years in the making. General Moses Cleaveland of the Connecticut Land Company came to the Western Reserve and founded the City of Cleveland in 1796. The name changed to its current spelling in 1831 when the “a” was dropped in order to fit the city’s name on a newspaper masthead.

Fun Facts

Cleveland is the home of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman, as well as a filming location for major motion pictures, including “A Christmas Story,” “The Avengers” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Oscar winners Paul Newman and Halle Berry hail from the region. So does Hall of Fame guitarist Joe Walsh, who honed his craft with The James Gang in the 1970s with the popular single “Funk #49.” LifeSavers candy, the modern golf ball and the electric streetlight are all Cleveland firsts invented right here in Cleveland.

Cleveland, located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST) in the State of Ohio within Cuyahoga County, is on the southern shore of Lake Erie, part of the Great Lakes Region.

Cleveland-Akron-Canton comprises the 15th largest combined metro area in the United States with more than 2 million residents in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and nearly 400,000 in the City of Cleveland.

The Land is teeming with new construction and renovations. The circa-1918 Renaissance Cleveland Hotel is poised for a $62 million transformation into Hotel Cleveland. The Marriott chain is also behind a proposed $35 million conversion of the vacant University Hotel & Suites into the 189-room Delta Hotel—as well as plans to build Ohio’s first W Hotel inside the 40-story Erieview Tower near the Rock Hall.

Several of Cleveland’s historic buildings are providing the foundation for new hotels. What was once Union Trust Bank will become The Centennial, a boutique hotel that’s part of an ambitious mixed-use project, while the Baker Building is being converted into the 97-room Fidelity Hotel with a throwback feel to the Gilded Age. The rapidly expanding Midtown District soon will have another hotel option: a 125-room Dream Hotel built adjacent to the Masonic Temple.

Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network’s (MAGNET) tech-heavy innovation center unites Downtown Cleveland’s drive with Midtown’s creativity. Cleveland Foundation’s HQ also finds a home in Midtown, making this neighborhood a vital hub for business and ingenuity.

Innovation Square is set to bring jobs and new residents to Fairfax’s Opportunity Corridor. A centerpiece Meijer grocery store will be boosted by 700–800 market-rate housing units, bringing even more diversity into this historic area.

UNIVERSITY CIRCLE

Construction is underway for Circle Square, an ambitious complex overlooking University Circle. The 24-story Artisan Tower, located near Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, will be the tallest building in University Circle. Haven’t you heard? A series of projects is cementing Northeast Ohio as an invigorating epicenter for development. Cleveland giant Sherwin-Williams is painting a bright future Downtown with a new global headquarters. The 36-story tower will utilize the “square point” aspects of neighboring buildings while making its own mark on the city skyline. The glass-sheathed HQ—along with a 600,000-square-foot R&D facility in Brecksville—is slated to add 400 jobs to the region.

Meanwhile, the Opportunity Corridor is living up to its name with the arrival of Canon Healthcare USA , a medical imaging facility projected to bring another couple hundred jobs to the city.

Japan tech behemoth Canon Inc. is investing $300 million into a burgeoning Cleveland development site already bursting with quality jobs and innovative businesses. (Yep, the same people who make cameras!)

icky Smith is all about paying it forward. In 2013, the Cleveland native was divorced and homeless in Los Angeles. He used what money he had to buy pizza for some other homeless people. Smith shared the experience online, and soon people in other cities were following his lead.

Enter Smith’s nonprofit R.A.K.E. (Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere). Each year, Smith embarks on a nationwide tour of spreading kindness—from surprising teachers in Arizona with a pizza lunch to DJ-ing a “senior prom” at a retirement center to hosting comedy shows to raise money for nonprofits.

“I do it with passion, or I don’t do it at all,” says the charismatic comedian. “And that comes from Cleveland. That comes from representing our city.”

The First Residents of the North Coast

Several tribes of Indigenous people lived in the region that became Greater Cleveland

Long before General Moses Cleaveland found his way to the banks of the Cuyahoga River in the 1790s, Indigenous peoples thrived in Ohio and especially enjoyed summering in Cleveland by the Cuyahoga. Agricultural towns were fortified with earthen walls and complex mounds that were mostly, unfortunately, destroyed by the 1800s.

After frontier wars and forced relocation decimated the population, only a handful of American Indians remained in Cleveland. New York-transplant and businessman Chief Thunderwater created the Supreme Council of Indian Nations (a restoration of the Iroquois

Confederacy) in the 1930s. About 30 years later, Russell Means of the Lakota founded the Cleveland American Indian Center to offer job assistance and preserve American Indian identity. By the 1970s, Means had become an activist, organized public protests, and made Cleveland a launching pad for the American Indian Movement.

As Greater Cleveland’s population grew, the Lake Erie Native American Council formed in 1990 to preserve their culture in Northeast Ohio. Its membership includes people from the Delaware or Lenape, Seneca and other nations within the Iroquois Confederacy. Alongside the 500-Year-Committee, 20 years of

Stodgy museums, step to the side: The glass-enclosed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a hip-shaking, guitar-flinging reminder of why Cleveland is ground zero for world-famous music. Memorabilia immortalizes the radio DJs and recording artists who invented the genre, while special galleries honor those who paved the way (such as Cleveland native Leo Mintz, the former Record Rendezvous owner largely considered one of the founding fathers of rock). And much like rock-and-roll itself, the multilevel museum just keeps on evolving.

Brittany Benton is Cleveland’s own music icon. Not only is Benton the owner of Brittany’s Record Shop in Ohio City and record label yesplsrecords, but she’s also the talented “DJ Red-I;” a member of S.Y.S. Band; and a Spanish and music teacher at Mastery School of Hawken.

If Benton isn’t at the shop, she’s usually working on music. “I buy it, sell it, produce it, teach it. I’m surrounded by doing something I love,” said Benton.

Benton first fell in love with mixing music in the 90s. She would save her lunch money to buy cassettes at the now-closed Nikki’s Music on Buckeye Road. Nikki himself began to give her promo copies with remixed versions of songs, inspiring her to learn about samples and beat making.

After graduating from Ohio University, Benton became a DJ. Her record-buying habit spun from her desire to sample from vinyl, eventually leading her to open her own shop. Benton’s been in her groove ever since.

At nearby SPACES, the conversation between local and global artists ignites into enduring, provocative work (with a neon “ART” sign leading the way).

Across town in University Circle, a giant silver hand beckons art aficionados into moCa’s four-story geometric feat of architecture. This contemporary art museum continues to push the envelope with several new exhibitions each year. Film buffs are free to geek out at Cinematheque, which the New York Times hailed as “one of the country’s best repertory movie theaters.”

And for those who enjoy a good poetry slam, Twelve Literary Arts delivers with socially conscious programming and events for all ages.

Foodies and fans of craft beer call Ohio City’s Market District their urban oasis. Just across the Cuyahoga River, west of Downtown, the city’s yellow-bricked West Side Market has been home to haggle-friendly meat, seafood and veggie vendors for more than 100 years. Yet it’s Ohio City’s Victorian-era homes, boutique eateries and famous craft brewers (like Great Lakes Brewing Co.) that have made the neighborhood one of the city’s symbols for urban renewal (where hip meets heritage). As the brewery that started it all, Great Lakes Brewing Co. is the perfect gateway to the Ohio City “brewery district.” Ever since GLBC more or less sparked Ohio’s craft brewing movement in the late 1980s, brew pubs and tap rooms have been popping up all around town—from Market Garden to Hansa to Bookmark to North High Saucy Brew Works provides much-needed sustenance with signature pizza and small-batch coffee menus alongside its craft beer lineup. End the night at Nano Brew, where you’ll find 20-some beers on draft and a locally sourced kitchen that stays open until 2 a.m.

This is where you come to pay homage to the brewery that started it all.

What better place to get fired up than at the Glass Bubble Project ? Whether flying solo or hanging out with a group, aspiring glassblowers can make like they’re in Murano.

This blue-collar neighborhood balances Cleveland’s big city feel with cozy, small town charm. Minutes from Downtown, Tremont is one of Cleveland’s oldest communities, and for all we know, might just be stuck in time. Just look at those old cottages, bygone neighborhood bars, beautiful churches and cordial local characters. Look closer and notice those come-as-you-are bars are sandwiched between Food Network-famous restaurants, modern housing, art galleries and even a pop culture monument (A Christmas Story House and Museum).

Historic buildings have found thriving new life in MidTown—where the dollhouse-like Stager-Beckwith Mansion now houses the Children’s Museum of Cleveland, and music venues like the 1913-built Agora Theatre have undergone rocking renovations. MidTown is also home to the city’s oldest building still standing: Dunham Tavern. Thanks to its plum location on the RTA Healthline, MidTown also has plenty of shiny new buildings dotting its streetscape— with more on the way, such as the forthcoming Cleveland Foundation headquarters.

FAIRFAX

Amid the neighborhood’s rapidly changing landscape thanks to ongoing development by the Cleveland Clinic, Fairfax remains rooted in tradition. Theatre fans can catch a show at Karamu House (the country’s oldest African American theater still in existence), while architecture buffs will want to take in the area’s historic churches. On the foodie front, stop by the new Angie’s Soul Food Café location for real-deal Southern soul food.
