In Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.” If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.
History
Cleveland has a proud history that is 227 years in the making. General Moses Cleaveland of the Connecticut Land Company came to the Western Reserve and founded the City of Cleveland in 1796. The name changed to its current spelling in 1831 when the “a” was dropped in order to fit the city’s name on a newspaper masthead.
Fun Facts
Cleveland is the home of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman, as well as a filming location for major motion pictures, including “A Christmas Story,” “The Avengers” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Oscar winners Paul Newman and Halle Berry hail from the region. So does Hall of Fame guitarist Joe Walsh, who honed his craft with The James Gang in the 1970s with the popular single “Funk #49.” LifeSavers candy, the modern golf ball and the electric streetlight are all Cleveland firsts invented right here in Cleveland.
Location + Population
Cleveland, located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST) in the State of Ohio within Cuyahoga County, is on the southern shore of Lake Erie, part of the Great Lakes Region.
Cleveland-Akron-Canton comprises the 15th largest combined metro area in the United States with more than 2 million residents in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and nearly 400,000 in the City of Cleveland.
Business
Cleveland has a $238 billion annual economy and is home to a number of companies that are on Fortune magazine’s list of the top 500 industrial and top 500 service companies in the United States, including KeyCorp, Sherwin-Williams, Eaton Corp and Progressive Insurance.

HOME SWEET
HOTEL
BY ANNIE ZALESKIThe Land is teeming with new construction and renovations. The circa-1918 Renaissance Cleveland Hotel is poised for a $62 million transformation into Hotel Cleveland. The Marriott chain is also behind a proposed $35 million conversion of the vacant University Hotel & Suites into the 189-room Delta Hotel—as well as plans to build Ohio’s first W Hotel inside the 40-story Erieview Tower near the Rock Hall.
Several of Cleveland’s historic buildings are providing the foundation for new hotels. What was once Union Trust Bank will become The Centennial, a boutique hotel that’s part of an ambitious mixed-use project, while the Baker Building is being converted into the 97-room Fidelity Hotel with a throwback feel to the Gilded Age. The rapidly expanding Midtown District soon will have another hotel option: a 125-room Dream Hotel built adjacent to the Masonic Temple.

Several tribes of Indigenous people lived in the region that became Greater Cleveland
Long before General Moses Cleaveland found his way to the banks of the Cuyahoga River in the 1790s, Indigenous peoples thrived in Ohio and especially enjoyed summering in Cleveland by the Cuyahoga. Agricultural towns were fortified with earthen walls and complex mounds that were mostly, unfortunately, destroyed by the 1800s.
After frontier wars and forced relocation decimated the population, only a handful of American Indians remained in Cleveland. New York-transplant and businessman Chief Thunderwater created the Supreme Council of Indian Nations (a restoration of the Iroquois

Confederacy) in the 1930s. About 30 years later, Russell Means of the Lakota founded the Cleveland American Indian Center to offer job assistance and preserve American Indian identity. By the 1970s, Means had become an activist, organized public protests, and made Cleveland a launching pad for the American Indian Movement.
As Greater Cleveland’s population grew, the Lake Erie Native American Council formed in 1990 to preserve their culture in Northeast Ohio. Its membership includes people from the Delaware or Lenape, Seneca and other nations within the Iroquois Confederacy. Alongside the 500-Year-Committee, 20 years of

In June, the Rock Hall will celebrate “50 Years of Hip-Hop” with a brandnew exhibit of the same name—along with events, concerts and other programs. The exhibit will celebrate inductees such as Jay-Z, N.W.A, Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, and more, while also exploring the musical and cultural impact of the genre.

Clevelanders are music fanatics, so it’s no surprise the best spots to catch live music are banging. Looking for sweeping views of Downtown and award-winning jazz and blues tunes? Head to the BOP STOP, stat. The jazz keeps on going at local staple Nighttown, set to receive an exciting facelift under new ownership, and Frederick’s Wine & Dine, which keep things smooth in Warrensville Heights with a robust menu and upbeat jazz.
We can’t blame you if you get starstruck taking in a show at The Agora; after all, the club is a bona fide rock history legend. Likewise, the Grog Shop is a longtime favorite hosting everything from hip-hop to indie rock. Hit the dancefloor in the mega-hip B Side Liquor Lounge, conveniently located downstairs from the Grog Shop. And cult favorite No Class is a dive bar perfect for catching an underground band or up-and-coming rapper.

Brittany Benton is Cleveland’s own music icon. Not only is Benton the owner of Brittany’s Record Shop in Ohio City and record label yesplsrecords, but she’s also the talented “DJ Red-I;” a member of S.Y.S. Band; and a Spanish and music teacher at Mastery School of Hawken.
If Benton isn’t at the shop, she’s usually working on music. “I buy it, sell it, produce it, teach it. I’m surrounded by doing something I love,” said Benton.
BY AJA HANNAHBenton first fell in love with mixing music in the 90s. She would save her lunch money to buy cassettes at the now-closed Nikki’s Music on Buckeye Road. Nikki himself began to give her promo copies with remixed versions of songs, inspiring her to learn about samples and beat making.
After graduating from Ohio University, Benton became a DJ. Her record-buying habit spun from her desire to sample from vinyl, eventually leading her to open her own shop. Benton’s been in her groove ever since.

CONNECTING CLEVELAND
Linking the city via bridges and trails.
BY ANNIE ZALESKILace up your sneakers and see The Land by bike or on foot through its many outdoor trails and bridges. The 2.1-mile Red Line Greenway connects two RTA Red Line stations with the Cleveland Foundation Centennial Lake Link Trail, allowing travel from Detroit Shoreway and Ohio City to The Flats. The Centennial Lake Link Trail also connects sections of the scenic Cleveland Lakefront Bikeway and enables access to the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail . A four-stage connection project tying the Towpath Trail to its historic roots is due to wrap up in 2024 at Cleveland’s Canal Basin Park .
URBAN SPACES
BY JEN JONES DONATELLICleveland gets it right with its urban sanctuaries and inviting greenspaces. See the proof at Voinovich Bicentennial Park on North Coast Harbor, where the grassy knoll allows you to triangulate your views of the skyline, the Rock Hall and Lake Erie. Take part in the North Coast Namaste yoga series, play some outdoor bocce or snap a selfie with the Cleveland Script Sign.
At the city’s heart is the Cleveland Mall, a series of public greenspaces first designed in 1903 to beautify the city’s civic center. (True story: the Mall is on the National Register
of Historic Places as an example of the “City Beautiful” movement born during that era.) Today this gorgeous grassy expanse is flanked by some of Downtown’s most well-known buildings—but luckily, none of them block the Mall’s prime views of the city and lake.
And who could forget Public Square, one of Downtown’s most iconic outdoor destinations? Grab a healthy bowl from REBoL and soak in the sights—and sounds—this summer with the “Square Sounds” music series on weekdays with the Terminal Tower as your backdrop.

TASTE
BY JEN JONES DONATELLIFrom sunrise to sundown, the Downtown dining scene is ready to make your day. Wake up at one of two Phoenix Coffee locations, or take a leisurely brunch at Betts inside the Kimpton Schofield Hotel. (Grab-and-go options are also available if you’re headed to a Guardians game. Win-win.) For lunch, go find out why Cleveland Sandwich Co. was hailed “Best of Cleveland” by Cleveland Magazine, or hit the new Geraci’s Slice Shop location for a gooey pizza pie.
Cleveland is a city with world-class experiences without the world-class ego.
Once dinner hits, let your taste buds lead the way to buzzy spots like Goma (sushi); Marble Room (steaks and seafood); Acqua di Luca (Mediterranean cuisine); Jade (New Asian); or Butcher & The Brewer (brewpub). End the day with a “cheers” at always-busy (and rightfully so) Masthead Brewing Co.
SHOP
BY SILK ALLENCleveland has “retail therapy” written all over the city. Start at Cleveland Clothing Co., where it’s always tee time. Show off your Cleveland pride—and instill some in others— by gifting souvenirs people actually want. Just down the street, make pour decisions at Heinen’s wine tasting machines, or grab some organic produce or a gourmet readymade dish.
Not in the mood for food? Inside the 5th Street Arcades, DIY inspo abounds at Coco’s Chalky Paints, while Intro Boutique stocks affordable contemporary and business-casual options with accessories to match. Tower City’s revival offers head-turning couture pieces from Infinite Boutique; statement bags in every color from In My Bag Collection; and luxury sneakers for men at The Feet Geeks.

More into shows over sports? Playhouse Square is your spot for Broadway shows, while outdoor Jacobs Pavilion attracts national acts with a side of skyline. Fun is the name of the game in The Flats, with a lively row of riverfront restaurants and nightclubs. Bet on a good time at JACK Casino, or taste your way down East 4th Street with a nightcap at comedy club Pickwick & Frolic
For family-friendly fare, look no further than the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Great Lakes Science Center

Foodies and fans of craft beer call Ohio City’s Market District their urban oasis. Just across the Cuyahoga River, west of Downtown, the city’s yellow-bricked West Side Market has been home to haggle-friendly meat, seafood and veggie vendors for more than 100 years. Yet it’s Ohio City’s Victorian-era homes, boutique eateries and famous craft brewers (like Great Lakes Brewing Co.) that have made the neighborhood one of the city’s symbols for urban renewal (where hip meets heritage). The neighborhood also earns cool points thanks to the entrepreneurial and artsy Hingetown district, and let’s not forget the new kid on the block: INTRO, a massive 297-unit apartment complex with a rooftop pool and instant hotspots like Edda Coffee and modern steakhouse Jaja.

This blue-collar neighborhood balances Cleveland’s big city feel with cozy, small town charm. Minutes from Downtown, Tremont is one of Cleveland’s oldest communities, and for all we know, might just be stuck in time. Just look at those old cottages, bygone neighborhood bars, beautiful churches and cordial local characters. Look closer and notice those come-as-you-are bars are sandwiched between Food Network-famous restaurants, modern housing, art galleries and even a pop culture monument (A Christmas Story House and Museum).
