FROM THE CEO What a Week Ahead!
I
’m not talking about the snow forecast, I’m talking about the crème de la crème week for fun stuff.
There’s the Wombats Rambler, the Alpine Masters Championships, the Australian Open Sprint Championships, Rider X and the Police Games kicking off too. Go here: www.fallscreek.com.au/eventsearch/ to check it all out and get that competitive spirit pumped up. If watching vs competing is more your style, then the Masters is the go… it’s a series of events, a night super G (the Rambler), GS training on Father Fosters (Dicky Knees a good vantage point), then the final course through ‘The Slot’ on the Summit on Sunday July 28th will be sure to see a few thrills and spills. If you’re after XC action, then the Sprint Championships can’t be missed. These explosive athletes provide a tremendous
spectacle, the very definition of power and grace. Head to the Nordic Bowl this weekend. Of course, at around this time of year the snow pack is building nicely, the base has bonded well and accumulating snow fall starts to accelerate (FYI we are smack on the 30 year average snow depth for this time of year). With that the opportunity to experience ‘off piste’ activities increase.
Falls Creek is the gateway to the high plains and some of the best and easily accessible backcountry terrain. The majesty and thrill of backcountry skiing is an experience too few get to truly experience. It’s like a great hike, but better, ‘cause it’s on snow! Having skinned and zig zagged the face, traversed the ridge, dug a pit (or two), reviewed the snowpack and profile along the way, scoped the runout paths, terrain traps and trigger points, whilst also having taken turns at breaking trail… you then eventually arrive at your desired point of descent.
Frankly, it’s hard work. It’s exhausting. But it is SOOOO worth it… ‘Earning your turns’ and the sense of accomplishment that comes with it is a great feeling. If you’re exhausted just thinking about it, Falls Creeks very own Steve Lee can provide all the same fun, with a fraction of the effort. It is a must do for intermediate and above skiers who are keen on the backcountry but haven’t necessarily the experience to do it (ie. The right training, the right equipment and knowledge - or understanding of terrain). Well, Steve has all of the above and you get to sit down, enjoy the views and get the ride of your life on his touring sleds, plus the exhilaration of ‘freshies in the back country’… book it now at the Events page, or http://www.fallscreek. com.au/listing/backcountry-tours-withsteve-lee/. Another favourite of mine and one I recommend doing, are the Snowmobile Tours hosted by Doug and Noreen. They’ve got the best office in the world and they get to ride snowmobiles across the high plains and show off Falls Creek like no other. The whole family can participate… and you won’t be disappointed, its great fun. Make sure you book, as they are extremely

FROM THE CEO popular. Twilight trips are especially memorable… they book out well in advance. Doug and Noreen have lost count of the number of proposals (wedding) they’ve participated in!!! http://www. fallscreek.com.au/listing/snowmobiling If you are keen on taking up backcountry touring, the Avalanche Training Australia, in conjunction with Avalanche NZ are offering accredited training courses this season. The dates for the Falls Creek workshops can be found here: www. fallscreek.com.au/listing/avalanche-trainingaustralia-falls-creek Know Before You Go and have the right knowledge to make sure that every day is the best day on snow possible. Foodie Tip of the Week: Summit Ridge. Our annual pilgrimage to Summit Ridge coincides with a birthday celebration and a tradition now for the last five years. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better… WOW was I wrong. Our party had the degustation menu, expertly matched to wines (the kids had water!) and liqueurs. We couldn’t pick a favourite dish, but if I had to, it would be a toss-up between the
Trout Pate, or the Quail, or maybe the Duck, or even the Lamb, oh and then the dessert. Trust me on this one, just do it. It’s a culinary extravaganza. Plus, Keith and Anne’s wine list justifies a trip back anytime.

We were so proud to see our South Australian and Tasmanian Club members who made the podium. Well done to George Wenk, Grace Breen, Tom Breen, Jack Breen, Abbi Lloyd-Bostock for their wins and helping to showcase our beautiful mountain to their fellow competitors. The inaugural FCRC Masters Program started last week on Wednesday 17th July… and the weather was hideous! The Masters program has only come about through the constant and unflagging efforts of David Etherton & Damien Allport over many years to get this off the ground. Well done you guys for your tenacity and determination in reviving a Masters Program at Falls Creek. Many thanks to Director of Ski School Scott Sanderson for helping to make it happen, and a very special mention goes out to Race Club parent Jamie Stanton for switching from snowboarding to skiing for the program. That is committed! Also a special shout out to the following people who signed up for both the Wednesday & Saturday programs to ensure that we got theFRIDAY Masters Program off the 8TH JULY 2016 ground: Symon Pyrohiw, David Etherton, Samuel Perna and yours truly. Your commitment to this program and our Club is greatly appreciated.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GUEST And Service
R
egular Falls Creek visitors and the locals would have notice the array of different coloured uniforms scattered around the mountain, in particular the Lime Green jackets. These are worn by Tickets and the Guest Services team. Our Guest Services Team is mainly made up of Volunteers who dedicate eight days or more of their time, being a friendly point of contact for guests all around the mountain. These volunteer in their lime green uniform, spend their day assisting ‘everyone.’ Some of these volunteers are locals with a long history in the resort. Others are newer faces who just enjoy the opportunity to ‘hang out,’ learn the mountain and support people. The role of Guest Services starts at around 8am or 8:30am at the bottom of Halley’s Comet where we are a friendly point of contact for guests and we also assist families and first timers heading up to lessons. Usually, our next role (especially during school holidays) is to sort the queue at the bottom of Halley’s Comet, Towers and Drovers and wherever else we’re needed. This is about getting folk to work together and group together in fours – because there are four seats on each chair and those waiting down the back of the line do not want to see seats going up empty. Then as we ski around we help those having difficulty and will try and assist if possible. It may be as simple as helping some-one scrape the snow from the bottom of their boots so they can get into their bindings again. It may be as critical as being the first on the scene of an accident and organising the safety aspects and contacting Ski Patrol.
At the end of the day you will find us lapping Wombats Ramble or up at Cloud 9, advising guests the best way home to their lodge, whether it be a simple trip down Wombats, downloading on Halley’s Chair or skiing safely back to your lodge with one of our team with our ‘ride home’ program. Overall, Guest Services, like the rest of the team on the mountain, are here to help you. If you have a question, need directions or whatever, just ask. We’ll do our best to make sure you’re having a good time! If you are interested in joining the guest services team you are in luck. We still have spots available! To inquire about the role and benefits included, please contact Emily, our Guest Services Supervisor at volunteers@ fallscreek.net. You may never know until you join this great team. •
You too can have a job like Kate’s - volunteering for Guests Services. Pic - Mike @ Top Shots.

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Spina Bifida Camp
S
pina Bifida participants were on the mountain this last weekend at Falls Creek with six Sit Skiers and a Snowboarder. With good weather and such a large group, the DWA jackets could be found on all the runs. Saturday starred with Brianna who was a returning participant and who has been skiing since she was young a person and is so happy to be here on the mountain at Falls Creek. Brianna loved the speed and enjoyed exploring more of the mountain by going over to Ruined Castle and Scott’s Chair while being tethered by brother and sister DWA Guides Sean and Lisa and they made the most of the weather and what the mountain had to offer. Tethering a sit ski (mono or dual ski) is the first step to independence with a DWA guide holding the sit ski for speed control with long leashes and assisting with turning when necessary. Brianna was confident
and was willing to increase her knowledge and ability on the various ski runs at Falls Creek. Both Brianna’s parents were up on the mountain and enjoyed watching their daughter have fun with her love of snow and sit skiing, with her smile and laughter making it all worthwhile. Sit skiing and the snow is important to Brianna and gives her the independence to ski with others. There was no doubt that her favourite part of the day was completing a 360° in the snow on Ruined Castle, and a tree run between Milky Way and Last Hoot. On Sunday at Drovers, Katherine from DWA in Melbourne decided to continue her progression to be an independent mono skier (one ski). This required DWA Guide Nick to tether and control the speed of the mono sit ski while Katherine practiced her turn shape and control through the Drovers terrain. Progressing from a dual sit ski to a mono sit ski is a significant progression and one that takes patience, time and the knowledge that several falls will eventuate. Many firsts were achieved on the weekend for Katherine as she mastered her turns on the groovy Drovers slopes. With six sit skis on the mountain DWA are

aware of the effort and care that is required from the ski lift operations staff. Loading a sit ski onto a lift is a well-rehearsed and timed operation. To the public when watching, it could be seen that loading a sit ski is simple process but as we all know anything that is easy becomes that way with planning and training on a repetitive basis for both DWA Guides and Lift Operators. No doubt that while at the lift you will hear the term “Slow and Pull Back” addressed to the lift operator. Lift operations know that they must slow the lift and go around to the back of the chair lift and pull back the sit ski while the guides lift the sit ski into the chair from the side. The sit ski is then clipped to the chair for safety and depending on type of sit ski other unique operations are performed. DWA acknowledge the never-ending friendly support we receive from the ski lift operations staff and would like to thank them for their continuous support of DWA on every camp and during the week. Well done guys – thank you. If you would like to know more about DWA, would like to donate to the fabulous work or would like to get involved, go to https://www.disabledwintersport.com.au. • Ken Payne

COMFORTABLE SKIING Slip-Catch and the Phantom Knee
K
nees are the skier’s injury of choice, for both recreational and World Cup skiers. Whilst World Cup skiers mostly do an ACL rupture with minimal damage to other areas, recreational skiers have way more fun with their knee injuries and are far more likely to rupture their ACL and damage surrounding structures simultaneously – like meniscal cartilage, collateral ligaments and tibial plateau fractures. Party time! Looking at the mechanism (or movements) involved in causing an ACL rupture, a woman’s natural structural and biomechanical predisposition puts many of them at an unfair disadvantage for suffering one of these types of injuries. And this is reflected in the injury rates for recreational female skier ACL tears being much higher than males. Over 50% of ACL ruptures are caused by the ‘slip-catch’ mechanism. The movements involved are; the outer leg is twisted in, and the knee is bent inwards, and snap goes the ACL. Ouch! The other classic ski mechanism of injury is ‘phantom foot.’ The knee is bent well beyond 90 degrees, the skier is almost sitting on their ski, and the foot is internally rotated. In this position, the bindings can’t detect that they need to release, so they stay on, tearing the ACL instead. Clang! Based on expert opinion, the risk factors for knee injuries are any that put you closer to the mechanisms described above, such as: • Increased Q angle (knock knees) – more common for the ladies • Joint laxity/hypermobility – more common in women, who tend to be more flexy
• Proprioception (or neuromuscular control/functional joint stability – do your muscles activate subconsciously to control the joint’s stability?) bad reflexes. • Low quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength – especially eccentric muscle contractions (when you’re decelerating or slowing down) • More recently physios have been discussing the role of gluteal muscle strength (your butt muscles) and their role in knee pain. We love big ski butts. THIS IS BUMMING ME OUT, WHAT CAN I DO? Yes, it does sound a bit dreary, but of course there are things to do to try to lower these risk factors. And clearly it is possible to lower these risk factors, because women in the World Cup have equal ACL injury rates to the men. So, hope is not lost. A lot of these start with being fit and doing some skiing-specific strengthening and proprioceptive training. Several neuromuscular training exercises have been evaluated with impressive success. This sounds far trickier than it really is. Go and talk to the peeps at Altitude Physio for some excellent exercises to get you going. Unfortunately, these mostly involve prep before you come skiing.
Phantom knee injury. Image from Vermont Safety Research
If you’re already on the slopes and want to reduce injury risk, get your technique and equipment right. Start by getting your boots aligned correctly to reduce the intrinsic risk factors you’ve been dealt. Get a slightly shorter, slightly narrower and slightly softer ski – these put less strain on the knee. Get a lesson to ensure you’re using optimal ski technique to prevent getting in the tricky-knee situations and don’t ski when you’re too tired - visit Nelse for a bevvy instead. • Krista Sturday, Ski Podiatrist at Ortho Ski

TWIFC: “Where are you from?” AH: “I am from the Sweden. Born in the forest, raised by the bears. I grew up with the wolfs and learned to run like the moose. Sweden is a peaceful country, with sunlight all summer long due to its place north of the polar circle. We are good at Nordic skiing and we fear for our life when its warmer than 30 degrees outside.” TWIFC: “What is your story?” AH: “Big question. Not sure how much of my past I shall reveal here. Never been in jail. 26 years old. Working as a national orienteering coach for Ireland and Nordic ski instructor for Windy Corner. Like to climb high mountains and struggling with my English speaking. I make my bed in the morning and like to get to bed early.” TWIFC: “What sports do you do?” AH: “I am a runner that has a crush for cross country skiing. I perform pretty well in orienteering as well. But apart from these three sports, do I pretty much suck and all other sports. I would love to become a good surfer though.” TWIFC: “What is your goal with cross country skiing?” AH: “I have a secret dream to be top 100 in the Vasaloppet (the world’s longest ski race at 90km with 16 000 participants), my personal best so far is 415, which I performed this spring. Maybe my best achievement on ski ever? The winter here

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS will definitely improve my chances. I will also race the Hoppet 42k. No goal there, more to just have a good time.” TWIFC: “What do you train for?” AH: “Nothing. I train mostly just because I love to be physically exhausted afterwards. I would still be training even if science showed it was bad for you, and even if I was the last human left on the planet, I would still do my 2h run. That’s what makes me me. But if you would like a proper answer: Vasaloppet 2020.” TWIFC: “What made you want to come down to Australia and Falls Creek?” AH: “That question have I got almost every day since I arrived. The main reason was of course because I got offered a job here. I am here for work.” TWIFC: “What has been your favourite thing about Falls Creek so far?”
more comfortable here than in Sweden. Every day is an easy day. Never cold, never slow snow, it’s not even dark. The terrain is more flat and the tracks are well groomed. Unfortunately, I miss all the small huts where you can buy Swedish fika on the mountain. To have a freshly made coffee and a waffle with ice cream halfway on your 4h ski would be amazing.” TWIFC: Thankyou Anton, and good luck in the Hoppet. One more thing from your Journo, the trails are absolutely divine at the moment! • Seve de Campo.
TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING Emergency Kit– While emergency kits are important all year round, they are extra crucial in the winter months.

AH: “The extremely good environment for training.” TWIFC: “What is your favourite Australian food?” AH: “Not sure what’s considered as Australian food, but the potato gems at Windy Corner with some salt and pepper after a long day in the ski tracks are absolutely amazing. I am very keen to try eating kangaroo meat; that would definitely be considered as Australian food.”

re you looking for the latest ideas which will help you reduce your power bills? Of course, we are all interested in making our energy costs more manageable. Most readers of this news mag will have heard of the efforts in Yackandandah to make their town more sustainable in its energy use. They call themselves TRY (Totally Renewable Yackandandah), and they are on the way to setting up their own power system and retailer, Indigo Power. The Alpine Shire has been invited to be part of this enterprise, and our Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association has set up a small group, calling ourselves TREK (Towards Renewable Energy Kiewa). Our first step has been to organise an Expo at the Auditorium beside the Information Centre, Bogong High Plains Road, Mount Beauty from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, August 3rd. There you will have an opportunity to hear about the latest in solar and heat pump technology, and speak with several suppliers. There is particular information about a ‘new’ type of heat pump for hot water, which is much more efficient than the older models, uses less than one third of the energy compared to an old immersion heater type, and is about the same initial cost to install. Call in and check it out during the afternoon. For further details, contact Keith Pike on 0408 652 471. • Travelling to Falls Creek this winter?

his stylishly renovated alpine apartment features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Apartment Athena offers ultimate convenience for a lucky buyer - everything has been renovated for a new owner to enjoy. Located in the managed complex of Frueauf Village, this property is approximately 59.1sqm and sleeps six. The master bedroom has a king bed and the second room with two bunks. Both bathrooms are crisp, white and fresh. There is a large ski drying room with laundry facilities. This apartment is very private and has easy access in the complex. Athena feels warm and inviting, it has a lovely open plan kitchen area that accesses a private balcony with new hot tub. This apartment is truly nestled in the alpine nature. Frueauf Village has a long alpine head lease to 2052 and the complex has onsite management. Frueauf Village is located centrally in the village and is within easy walking distance to some of our finest dining establishments – with one of them being in the complex itself. Quality ski hires and retail outlets are also quite close. Like the rest of Falls Creek, Frueauf Village offers that unique ski out – ski in facility that makes the village unique as a snow resort. destination, Falls Creek has a lot to offer. World class mountain bike trails have been constructed in the resort adding up to a total of over 40km of trails. This has led to lots of fun for locals and adds amenity and attraction for visitors.
Challenge; the Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and the World’s Longest Lunch are highlights of the summer - as are the 12°C cooler temperatures on those stinking 40°C summer days in the city.
We then have the fully sealed Bogong High Plains Road giving access to the fabulous high plains, the Mitta Valley on the other side – including the Blue Duck and Payne’s Hut.
At $370,000, this property definitely deserves and inspection. Call the agent to make an appointment. Please note this apartment has not been in holiday rental previously. Christa Smit (Zirknitzer), Director, Zirky Real Estate, Mb: 0402 277 808. •

THE HORTH WHITHPERER
A
bloke calls his mate, the horse breeder, and says he’s sending a friend over to look at a horse.
His mate asks, “How will I recognise him?” “That’s easy, he’s a dwarf with a speech impediment.” So, the dwarf shows up, and the breeder asks him if he’s looking for a male or female horse. “A female horth.” So he shows him a prized filly.
“Nith earzth, can I thee her mouf?” The breeder is getting pretty ticked off by this point, but he picks him up again and shows him the horse’s mouth. “Nice mouf, can I see her twat?” Totally mad at this point, the breeder grabs him under his arms and rams the dwarf ’s head up the horse’s fanny, pulls him out and slams him on the ground.
“Nith lookin horth. Can I thee her eyeth?”
The midget gets up, sputtering and coughing.
So the breeder picks up the dwarf and he gives the horse’s eyes the once over.
“Perhapth I should rephrathe that. Can I thee her wun awound a widdlebit?” •
“Nith eyeth, can I thee her earzth?” So he picks the little fella up again, and shows him the horse’s ears.
