OUR SUMMER OF CYCLING State XCO Champs

S

unday 16th February saw the return of the Victorian State XCO champs to Falls Creek. This ever popular racing format sees bikers going head to head on a technical and challenging course over a set number of laps up and down the mountain. The course team at Falls Creek worked flat out on the lead up to the event and racers faced a challenging track that included a mass start through the village up to the aqueduct to get the lungs working. The route then took them out to the Lake and back via Lakeview, Turbine and Vortex. Spectators were treated to regular views of their racers as the riders descended into Slalom Plaza via the stairs to start a fresh lap.

The start climbing through the village was an exercise in getting the heart pumping. Pic – Ken Bell.

Race taking place at Falls on Friday 28th February. Aimed at school age riders the event will follow the same XCO format as the State Champs though will feature a less technical course. Based out of the Rocky Valley Foreshore entrants can expect a fun yet achievable course made of fast flowy sections and some challenging climbs. Aimed at experienced and novice racers, race times and lap numbers will be amended to suit different age categories.

MTB de Femme The word has already gone out that this year’s MTB de Femme (planned for this weekend) has been cancelled. This has proved to be a popular event drawing participants from the big smoke and all over regional Victoria. But, the fires and the reports of the fires, had a severe impact on entry numbers – meaning that the decision had to be made. The good news is that the MTB de Femme will be back again next summer – bigger and better. We’ll keep you posted. •

COMMUNITY SPIRIT Bushfire Relief

A

s this article is prepared, (and it should have gone out in the last edition of 7th Feb), it is hard to remember the state of chaos some people were experiencing – fanned by the overzealous media reporting of the fires. This is not to make light of the horrendous catastrophic conditions our neighbours experienced – and many locally were distressed and evacuated when the time came. This meant we went from a normal busy holiday season to a ghost town in less than two days. Whilst there were not any fires in this valley that impacted property, the fact that folk did evacuate meant a severe loss of business for just about every business on town. This and the wages that were lost has a severe impact on the economy of the town

be returned to the store by no later than Tuesday 10th March.

To help relieve some of the pain, the FoodWorks chain have chosen to support Mount Beauty FoodWorks with a donation of $2,500 which in turn Nick & Karen have decided to convert to vouchers to donate to fellow retailers/traders in the Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South communities to help with their burden caused by the massive loss of revenue in January. The recipient can choose to use the vouchers themselves or perhaps – as the accompanying letter suggested - use them as a promotional incentive in their business to get people to spend more with them and get a free $20 voucher to spend in the supermarket. We hope this will in some small way help to revitalise our economy. Many local businesses are choosing to distribute these vouchers among their patrons – usually by way of a small raffle. The vouchers must

Also, in conjunction with FoodWorks, Karen and Nick have launched an initiative to enable their customers to donate as they shop by adding a couple of dollars to their shopping - as per the flier in store. The important point being 100% of donations will be returned to Bushfire affected communities where a FoodWorks operates, such as ours. These communities include Mallacoota, Omeo & Orbost amongst others. Karen and Nick have also committed that 100% of the funds received from these donations will be in turn reinvested into the community. This incentive, plus the ‘Spirit of the Community’ points system we have in our local FoodWorks is another clear indicator that shopping locally is not only good for the wallet, it is also good for the community and for the soul! •

FOR THE COMMUNITY By The Community

T

he inaugural Gather Festival held recently up at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park aimed to bring people together and celebrate valley life and ‘gather’ they certainly did! Over 500 people attended the music, arts and mountain biking event run by the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley, Riff Raffs and Team Mount Beauty with perfect weather conditions and hundreds of colourful flags setting the perfect backdrop for what would become a memorable day for all the right reasons. It kicked off at 9:30am, with 100 mountain bike riders making the most of the shuttles so they could ride the trails before hitting the festival afterwards. With the music side of the event starting an hour later, local food and beverage vendors were on-site feeding the hungry crowds, as well as market stalls featuring locally-made treasures for people to browse, and it wasn’t long before the venue was buzzing with people. Audiences were treated to performances by local musicians such as the Mount Beauty & District Community Stage Band and the Spooky Ukies and former locals Adam Grok and Ro George, as well as artists from across Australia bringing their variety of musical genres to the two stages for a whopping 12 hours.

Whether it was the cruisy folk tunes from the likes of Richard Perso, Tom Richardson and Mitch King, indie pop songs by Jessica Lorraine and Tanya George, or rock’n’roll by Sarah McLeod and Dallas Frasca, there were certainly no complaints when it came to the musical performances on stage. A stand out on the day was DJ Jarrah, Great venue - great festival - great work team! Pic – Simone Dowel otherwise known as local talent Jarrah Forrer, who volunteered Hats off to a fantastic day that people of his time and officially got the dance floor all ages enjoyed, and congrats to everyone happening as day turned to dusk. involved for making it happen. • Simone Bringing some comedic relief to the stage Dowell were MCs Shorty and Bushy, who also generously donated their time and put in a huge effort for the event’s 12 hour duration. If you ask anyone who was there, they’ll tell you there was just a positive vibe all day long - everyone was happy, relaxed and loving valley life, just as the organisers intended. Of course, the festival would not have been possible if it weren’t for the droves of volunteers who spent hours upon hours organising, setting up, ensuring things ran smoothly on the day, and packing up afterwards.

$120 for 60 mins | $85 for 30 mins

From the committee to those who volunteered just for a few days, it was an incredible effort and one the community appreciates.

Our local Spooky Ukies talent lovin’ it up on stage with Dalls Frasca. Pic – Simone Dowel

The inaugural Gather Festival was also generously supported by the former Sweet Valley Sounds committee and our local businesses, and again - it just wouldn’t have been possible without them.

FALL LINES Taxi Hours Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South is very fortunate to have a taxi service serving the area – including Albury/Wodonga and Falls Creek. And, like every other business in town, there are limits to the amount of hours one can work. Therefore Roly and Julie have made some minor changes to their hours of operation. The on-demand taxi hours are now 8am to 9pm Monday to Thursday. Still 8am to 1am Friday and Saturday. But, there will be NO taxi service on Sunday. Special Bookings may be made outside these hours by prior arrangement. These hours don't affect hire car transfers which operate everyday by prior booking such as High Plains transfers, airport shuttles, Bright, and transfers from Albury/ Wodonga to Falls Creek for snow bookings. There will be a message on the taxi phone advising of this, as well as an option to record a message. Roly and Julie will respond to these messages promptly if they are a booking request or other time-sensitive issue. Thanks for your support. Roly and Julie. •

More Young Talent The young people in our community never cease to amaze us, and we love hearing stories about them kicking goals in all aspects of life! The latest achievement is by local lad Harry Stripeikis, who has been selected for the Australian Junior Basketball squad to play in New Zealand this Easter - a great reward for all of his hard work. Over the past 12 months, Harry has been playing basketball on Friday nights in his local representative team of Wodonga in the Victorian Junior Basketball League, with the games mostly played in Melbourne. Throughout the year, he also attended skills days where he was selected for the North East Academy and the Basketball Victoria Country Gold Nugget Camp. Harry then went on to be selected for the Victorian Bushrangers Under-14 team to compete against interstate teams and New Zealand in the Australian Country Cup in Albury recently. From Australian Country Cup, Harry was one of four players from Victoria selected to represent Australia in New Zealand in April this year - and incredible effort! Along with camps throughout the year, Harry has shown his commitment to basketball by training up to four nights a week and playing locally in Wodonga, and in the off season and Christmas holidays practised his skills, and kept fit with swimming and visiting Dan twice a week at Unbreakable Fitness. Good luck in New Zealand Harry! •

Tips for Better Living Use Cloth Serviettes Brought to you by Lee and Caroline at Gather and Harvest Not only are cloth serviettes more durable, but they also save money and are reusable. Re-using items reduces your rubbish output, which means less energy is used in transporting and processing your waste. Plus, using cloth serviettes makes your dining experience feel a little more fancy – even if it is only a BBQ. •

Keeping your Pet Cool Brought to you by Lisa and David at LD’s Pet Care • All pets should be kept in cool, shady areas. It is ideal to bring pets indoors on hot days. If you're feeling warm, chances are they are too. • Provide plenty of fresh, cool water in large water containers. Be sure to provide numerous sources of water in case one is spilt. Ensure the containers are in the shade and add some ice to the water to keep it cool. Place a clam shell pool in the shade and fill it with water so your dog can wade in the water to keep cool. If your pet's share your yard with children, remember to have all necessary precautions in place, including fencing, in order to keep children safe. •
