AUTUMN EDITION FOURTEEN
FRIDAY 8TH MAY 2020
Happy Mother's Day
Everyday is fabulous, but some days are just better than others in Mount Beauty. Pic – Ken Bell Is Hughie supplying all of this snow just to tease us?. Pic – Chris Hocking Another wonderful example of our beautiful Autumn colours. Pic – Roslyn Ann Photography
ANZAC DAY Celebrated by Many
Acacia Keeble played the Last Post and Joshua New gave an address.
n our own unique and individual ways, the communities of Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga showed just how much we appreciate the efforts of all of our countrymen and women who have gone to war ‘for us!’ It is a sincere mark of respect for all who served and for those that did not make it home.
In other parts of town, residents, students and cadets (in uniform) stood to attention at the end of their driveway – with candle – in the dark at 6am. Well done.
I
At the Mount Beauty Cenotaph, piper Barry Flynn, in full regalia, put on a one-man show with his beautiful bagpipe performance. Barry had served overseas with the British Army before moving to Australia and has played at ANZAC Day services at Falls Creek. The well-spaced crowd were very appreciative and many wreaths and flowers were laid. In Tawonga, the flag was raised by Mark Hardidge and several wreaths and flowers were laid at the new ANZAC Memorial. Charles Street, Tawonga had their own ANZAC Day Ceremony run by Cr Tony Keeble at 10am with many residents observing this from their driveways.

And finally, from students at the Mount Beauty Secondary College, the following poem by Joanna Fuchs was chosen by Jonah Cosgriff and Georgina Williams for the ANZAC Day Remembrance to be read out on Alpine Radio.
The Best on Earth: If someone has done military service, They earn the title "veteran," and more; They earn our deep respect and admiration; That they are special no one can ignore.

They sacrificed the comforts we enjoy; The list is long of all the things they gave; Our veterans are extraordinary people; They’re loyal, dedicated, true and brave. When terror and invasion were real threats, They showed us they could handle any storm. We owe our freedoms and our very lives To our veterans, who served in uniform. Our veterans should be celebrities; They’re exceptional; no other group compares. We’re grateful for the many things they’ve done; They’re always in our hearts and in our prayers. We owe our veterans support and friendship; Let no one ever question what they’re worth. These men and women served us and our country; Our veterans - the very best on earth. Joanna Fuchs

PS: A Special thanks to our hard-working local R&SL members who continue to do a great job; and thanks to Karen and Campbell Ford and team at Mt Beauty Hardware for their wonderful window display.

COVID-19 The Bright Side
A
music teacher from my school days, not that long ago, described the Oboe as “an ill wind that nobody blows any good!” The preference for this article would be the correct terminology “It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good!” which basically means that times are pretty tough if nothing good comes from the current situation. Therefore, let’s have a look at the items that are beneficial for us as we work our way through this problem period - or, as the whizzes at Monty Python said as they were hanging around the cross “Always look on the bright side of life!”
Then we have much much better family time outdoors – on bikes, walking or pushing the pram. It was simply fabulous to see the number of people out around the lake last Sunday (3rd) after all of that wonderful rain (and snow!). Families walking their dogs and pushing the pram and riding their bikes. A special mention here to the mums with bubs that are out running with the bubs in the pusher. Great effort!
Wonderful people choose to live here because it is a fabulous place to live –

MOTHER’S DAY SHOPPING A special mention to Studio E Cakes who will be treating mums in the valley to a delectable range of cupcakes and high tea capers this Mother’s Day - but unfortunately by the time this goes to print, you’ll have missed the cut off date for orders! So if you’re kicking yourself you didn’t get in quick enough, make sure you remember Elene's delicious creations next time you’re after a cake, no matter the celebration - from birthdays and baby showers to weddings and anniversaries! And of course, we can’t forget the shopping destination for all fashion forward mums, Sassy Road, but we’ve left this particular business until last for a very good reason. This week, we celebrated a whole decade of Sassy Road in Mount Beauty. Anyone who has been in the business of small business knows that reaching the 10 year milestone is an incredible achievement, and one that takes a lot of hard work, persistence, tears and triumphs. There’s no argument that Sassy Road has become a staple of the Mount Beauty retail scene, and a shopping destination for many - with some dedicated customers making regular day trips from as far away as Shepparton just for Moni’s styling advice and fabulous taste in fashion.
Pictured above: Monica (Moni) Hood celebrating a wonderful 10 years in Sassy Road. Pic – Simone Dowel Pictured left: Pierre, Danni and the team at Alpine Outfitters have a great range for the outgoing mum. Pic – Ken Bell
From that first opening night in May, 2010, the store has come a long way to what it is now, and it hasn’t been without the constant love and support of her husband, Will, and children Emily and Liam, and dozens upon dozens of customers who return time and time again (and some on a daily basis - yes we’re looking at you Lynne Short!) to get their fashion fix from Sassy Road. On behalf of the community, this paper would like to thank and congratulate Moni on 10 wonderful years, and we look forward to the next decade! So for the fashion lovers, you can’t go past Sassy Road. Whether it’s clothing, shoes, jewellery or accessories you’re after, Moni can help you find the perfect piece your mum will love. With a brand new range of active-wear and sleepwear landing in store just in time for Mother’s Day, and new styles for winter arriving regularly, there’s even more to choose from this year - or simply pick up a gift voucher and give mum the gift of shopping (because we don’t actually think we know a mum who doesn’t love an excuse to ‘drop in’ to Sassy Road!) • Simone Dowel

There are many wonderful stories about Julian, Beth and Julian’s Lodge - centrally located in the developing village of Falls Creek. Your Editor’s first real experience of Julian’s was at one of their famous community dinners held early season in the 70’s and into the early 80’s. Most business people around the mountain were invited as guests of Julian and Beth to enjoy a great sit-down dinner and - to all intent and purpose – a great Falls Creek family get-together at the start of the season. • As the days get shorter and darker, our need to use indoor lighting increases. Think about switching to LED light bulbs, as they are a more energy efficient lighting source than other types of lighting. There is even a Victorian Government upgrade program, where rebates and discounts are available to households and businesses with incandescent lamps, halogen lamps & CFL. Checkout the Victorian Government website for more info. •

Wild Dog Trapping
May is Red Shield Month. At this stage there may be some collection tins placed strategically around town - and a digital collection facility is being arranged. More news in the next edition.
D
ELWP (Ovens) and ParksVic have notified the Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association of the following planned undertaking next week (week beginning 4th May).
10th
This Information was kindly distributed by UKVCA and the press release is printed here-with. Wild dog trapping around Mount Beauty, Tawonga South & Tawonga. DWELP will be setting soft leg traps on the edges of forest tracks and trails, right on the edge of town. Some of the tracks/ areas include: Simmonds Creek Road, Simmonds Creek Track (runs from the end of Highland Court to Simmonds Creek Road), Vails Road area, Ryders Spur Track, Diggings Lane, and around some old dozer lines in the vicinity of Vails Hill, Hollonds Hill and behind properties in Tawonga and Tawonga South. NOTE: Some of the traps will be on the very edges of these tracks. All appropriate signage will be in place. Please do not walk your dog off leash in these areas at this time. If you have a dog on a leash, it is suggested you walk in the middle of the track, and not let your dog sniff at the track edges. Last year, two domestic dogs were caught when trapping occurred in similar areas. If you requite further information, please contact the DELWP office (Ovens) – 03 5731 1222. • Now, your editor has been in touch with Mr. John Turner of DELWP – contacted through the above phone number. John has since come back to the paper and has advised me that the Trapping Contractor has not yet started the program (as of Tuesday 5th May) and that a certain start date has not yet been established. I have requested that – as soon as the start date for trapping is set, that we be advised, through the paper and any other community
Mother’s Day. Now some might think this is a little commercialised – but so what. We don’t have to go with the commercial version. We can be creative and find great ways to contact or be with that most important person in our lives. Skyping, Insta – all that stuff – or even better, something as simple as posting a lovely card if you can’t be with mum on Mother’s Day.
During this trapping period, look for the signs and keep your dog on the lead. Pic – Ken Bell
organisations that are appropriate. I have also asked that – as well as being advised of the start date, we are also informed of the period that the trapping will go for – so that we have a definite end date. Obviously, while this trapping program is being planned and implemented, keeping your dog on a lead during all of the walks and looking for any signs is simple common sense. This paper will try and let you know, via print and our Facebook site as to progress of the planned trapping. • Ed PS: Make sure you are picking up after your dog – because some people aren’t!!
