COMFORTABLE SKIING Why Cave Men Never Skied

A

s we’ve evolved over the millennia, humans are asking their bodies to do far more than they ever have. Gymnastics, ballet, unicycle hockey, chess boxing and bobsleigh (where your bones don’t break ‘they shatter’) to name a few. It’s important to remember that skiing and ski boots, are not a natural environment for the foot. Nor is it a natural activity or position for your body to be in – humans did not evolve to go skiing and so we need that extra support. Hence the need for a honking, great, stiff, plastic boot to connect skier to the ski – something cave men didn’t have access to. Skiing recruits the extended use of different muscle groups that everyday life does not. This is why after lunch the muscles feel depleted, fatigued and another hot chocolate is far more appealing. Technique and fitness come into play in this, but boots also have a huge impact on stance on your skis and whether the correct muscles are activating.

MOUNT BEAUTY & DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Chamber of Commerce AGM will be held on Wednesday 29th July at 7:30pm, with the venue yet to be determined. Due to social distancing requirements, only a limited number of people will be able to attend, however there will be an option to attend via video conferencing. If you are interested in attending, please email secretary@mtbeauty.com.au.

So often people confuse the role of the boot and the ski. The choice of boot for a skier or boarder is influenced far more by biomechanics and enthusiasm levels (your boot can’t tell how good the technique is, but it can tell how much energy is being pushed into it) than the type of skiing. Ski choice is far more dependent on the snow conditions and where the skiing will be done. So, it’s a good idea to let someone who knows biomechanics fit a ski boot or introduce the perfect match, as it were.

You’ve gotta love it. The science of skiing and boot fitting has moved on! Pic – Courtesy Ortho Ski.

Orthotics in everyday or sports shoes are for the forces that go through the foot when you walk and run. Dial it up to doing 60km/hr or more on skis and those forces are exponentially increased and acting upon the foot in a vastly different way. This is not what the foot was designed to do! That foot needs some serious support.

AGM Falls Creek Historical Society AGM will be held in the QT Boardroom 2nd level QT West Wednesday 29th July 2020 | 5:15pm All members are encouraged to attend But numbers may be limited due to COVID-19 requirements Further Enquiries to: 0427 329 629

A ski podiatrist (what better way to describe the role?) is also the best person to see when there are some of the more serious niggles like a Moreton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis, excessive pronation or circulation issues. The management of these in a ski boot is often more effective than in a regular shoe. Pain from boot or body issue can sometimes be difficult to determine from the initial assessment. A recent client wasn’t sure if their boot pain was caused by a previous leg injury and subsequent muscle issues, or if the boot was unsuitable to their body and biomechanics. A few quick functional muscle tests and it was clear it wasn’t the body, it was the boot. Fast, simple and effective. Move on. It’s also worth seeing a ski podiatrist if coming back from injury to ensure the ski or snowboard equipment is correctly aligned and not going to exacerbate any underlying issues. Or if there are issues that have never quite been figured out. Or just to get ski boots fitted right… • Krista Sturday, Ski Podiatrist at Ortho Ski.

FORGET THE FUSS Take The Bus

alls Creek as a winter holiday destination has plenty going for it. Not only does it have heaps of wonderful skiing (and boarding) terrain, it has a fabulous integration of ski slopes, the unique ski in – ski out facility – from your accommodation to the slopes and back again, and what we term a range of progression perfect slopes. That means that from the beginners’ areas, it is not a challenge to find the next step up to a slightly more challenging slope to then go to an even more challenging slope. People find it easy to get around and enjoy their experience. And if you’re not sure, Snowsports School offer lessons – a part of which is to help you navigate back to you lodge after skiing.

Falls Creek offers skiing and boarding opportunities that you can do for eight hours a day – keeping fit - breathing in crystal clean air – and when you do stop for a rest, you can enjoy some of the best scenery this country has to offer. The next question is: How do we get to enjoy this wonderful place.

(diesel fuel clags up in cold conditions), wheel chains (and how to fit them) and then getting your car parked in Falls Creek. And if you don’t have chains in your vehicle, there is every chance you will be turned around at the Resort Entry Ticket Box at Howman’s Gap and sent the 26km back to Mount Beauty to get chains.

Well Falls Creek is serviced by a very good alpine road. But like any alpine road it has its issues. And when you are travelling here for a well-earned holiday do you really want to tackle the issues that sometimes we are faced with on the road. Snow – lots of it – enough to block the road. Black Ice – you can’t see it and when you do feel it, it is usually too late! Falling trees, vermin deer – big ones, plus our local kangaroos and wombats. All of these issues can absolutely ruin a holiday.

You know, there is an easier way. And the secret is in the heading for this article. Forget the Fuss – Take the Bus. Fallon’s Falls Creek Coaches have been here for years. And before them we had the Pyle family – and these operators have untold years of experience in getting our visitors to and from the snow safely – in the comfort of a well-appointed warm, clean, dry coach – under the stewardship of a driver who has done the Hazardous Area Driver training – and who has been travelling up and down the road all season – and probably for the last umpteen years.

Even then, if you feel confident enough to drive up the road, you still have to deal with the issues of anti-freeze for the radiator, Alpine Mix diesel for all diesel vehicles

Under normal circumstances, (in a normal year) the service would pick up from Melbourne. But this is no ordinary year and as such, the coaches will not be picking up in Melbourne. A hire car for the family is the best option then park in the secure car park at the bus terminal and take the coach to Falls Creek. The Falls Creek Coach Service continues to offer regular services from Albury (airport and rail) and also a regular service up and down the hill – all designed to fit in with the rail and plane services that you are likely to take to get here. Another option could be to book a private transfer for yourself and your family in either of their luxury vehicles including the new 16 seat Mercedes that arrived recently. If you do decide to drive here for your holiday, the smart move would be to park your car in the secure carpark at the Falls Creek Coach Service depot in Tawonga South and take the bus from here. The Park and Ride Service offered by Falls Creek Coaches is a dream.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2020 Edition FIVE

FORGET THE FUSS During the busier part of the winter a coach leaves for Falls Creek about every two hours. You can simply unload your gear undercover at the bus depot, park your car in the secure carpark (with options for undercover storage) and then your holiday starts as you board the coach. Yes there are lots of reasons to take the bus to Falls Creek. Safety, comfort, ease, no fuss - and remember, you are on holidays. Enjoy every moment of the time. Go to: www. fallscreekcoachservice.com.au for bookings, prices and timetables. And, as added incentive to leave the car in the car park, the cost of not carrying wheel chains can be quite expensive as this notice from Victorian Police shows. Disobey information on a road access sign (Fail to Cary Snow Chains) Road Rule 97(1). Penalty: $161.00. Fail to Obey No Entry sign (Fail to fit snow chains when directed or sign posted) Road Rule 100. Penalty $322.00 & 3 Demerit points.

Comfort, security, safety and enjoyment are yours for the taking when you book your travel to Falls Creek on one of these fabulous coaches. Pic – Courtesy Falls Creek Coach Service

Alpine Resorts (Management) Regulations. Failing to Carry of Fit Chains. Penalty: $644.00. That little exercise of not carrying chains coud cost you as much as $1127.00. But, there is an easier way – as outlined above. •

f there’s only two things you take away from this article, here they are: 1. It’s OK to not feel OK, and 2. It’s always OK to ask for help – in fact it’s smart! And let’s be honest, we’ve all had some pretty tough times this year and needed a little extra help. As far as years go, 2020 has been quite the let-down. It’s already been one of the most challenging years many of us have lived through, from bushfires to Coronavirus, and everything in between. Whether it’s financial stress, being overwhelmed with loneliness and feeling isolated, the grief of losing loved ones, feeling pressure of unexpected change, or things just not turning out the way you’d

COMMUNITY SUPPORT I’ve had a really tough year; in fact, I’d say the toughest yet. While I don’t suffer from a mental illness, I went through a period earlier this year when I wasn’t coping too well emotionally, so I booked myself in to see a counsellor. It was wonderful to speak openly to someone I didn’t know, get a different perspective on things and learn some coping mechanisms for the way I was feeling. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a counsellor, and it probably won’t be the last - but I treat my mental health the same way I’d approach a niggle in my back; I like to talk to a professional about it when it first becomes a problem, rather than waiting until the day I wake up and realise it’s gotten so bad that I can’t get out of bed. Let me make one thing clear - you don’t have to have a mental illness in order to speak to someone about your mental health, and if you do have a mental illness, it is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. As well as speaking to your GP or seeing a counsellor, there are also some fantastic resources available online, starting with BeyondBlue’s Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service at coronavirus. beyondblue.org.au, where you’ll find details for both phone and online chat support services, and plenty of information, strategies and expert advice to support your social and emotional wellbeing, and support those around you or anyone you may be concerned about. For our younger community members aged 12 to 25 and their parents, you’ll find plenty of great resources and support

services at headspace.org.au. As well as phone and online chat support, you can build your own personalised mental health tool-kit, create an account for their digital services, and find blog posts on issues you might be able to relate to and learn from. The best thing about online resources is that they’re usually free, and a great place to start. If you’re not comfortable with speaking to someone in person just yet, or you’re still struggling to reach out and ask someone you know for help, all it takes is a few clicks on a website to find out what support services are available. It’s a starting point, which can take a lot of courage to get to in the first place.

Another way of looking at it is like this: If you have a tax problem, you go to see the smartest Tax Agent you can find. If you have an employment issue, you seek out the best employment lawyer you can get. If you get lost in the bush, the people looking ofr you will be the best S&R people around.

Located at the end of Ory’s Home Trail, this is true ski-in ski-out and it also has some of the easiest access to the Nordic Ski Trails of any property in Falls Creek. A shuttle bus stops just up the road and there is good parking over summer. There are excellent restaurants and cafes close by. As an all-year-round resort and holiday destination, Falls Creek has a lot to offer. World class mountain bike trails have been constructed in the resort adding up to a total of over 40km of trails. This has led to lots of fun for locals and adds amenity and attraction for visitors. We then have the fully sealed Bogong High Plains Road giving access to the fabulous high plains, the Mitta Valley on the other side – including the Blue Duck and Payne’s Hut. A comprehensive suite of events makes summer in Falls Creek a nice time to be here. The Dragon Boat festival; the Alpine Challenge; the Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the World’s Longest Lunch and the Trails Tales and Tucker guided walks and lunch are highlights of the summer - as are the 12°C cooler temperatures on those stinking 40°C summer days in the city. Frueauf Village operates year round for bookings and enjoys the benefits of an onsite manager and has a long alpine head lease. At $695,000 this property deserves to be inspected at least. ALPINE RADIO To Inform and Empower!

A

s part of the great work the team down at our local Alpine Radio are involved in, the following article will give you an idea of the great lengths they go to caring for all aspects of the community. Did you know that more than 18% of adult Australians experience difficulty reading, making it harder for them to access standard printed material? These people may require audio, braille, large print or electronic text in order to access information. There is a national Radio Reading Network dedicated to informing and empowering the estimated five million Australians with a print disability. Created in 1978, RPH Australia is the national peak body for the Radio Reading Network. Broadcasting to 70% of the Australian population, the Radio Reading Network provides access to people with a print disability by combining the depth of print media information with the immediacy and far-reaching spread of community radio across Australia. Local community radio station Alpine Radio, broadcasting on frequency 96.5FM in the Kiewa Valley, has been presenting RPH programs for several years, and has recently received a grant to assist the station to promote and continue to run these programs. Alpine Radio believes in the rights of all people to access printed material, enabling equal participation in cultural, political and social life.

Alpine Radio runs two RPH sessions, each approximately an hour long, at 2pm on Wednesday afternoons and 7pm on Thursday evenings each week. Station Manager Michael Ahearn told ‘This Week’ that the two sessions concentrate on newspaper and magazine articles with local, state and national news. These articles transform quick sound bites that listeners may have heard on the radio or on TV news broadcasts, into a more in-depth article that the listener with a print disability may not have been able to access. The RPH Network currently consists of 18 AM/FM radio services across Australia, as well as digital radio services in Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide. The RPH Network operates with the assistance of 1,500 dedicated volunteers around Australia. RPH Australia is also working to extend the national reach of Radio Reading services to empower Australians with a print disability living in regional, rural and remote areas. Alpine Radio is proud to have been involved in this regional reach for several years. Alpine Radio has several regular volunteer readers to provide this great service, but is always looking for more readers. If you would like to assist with reading, please call Station Manager Michael Ahearn on 03 5754 4554 during weekdays between 10am and 2pm to register your interest. And in the meantime, listen in to Alpine Radio’s RPH programs and enjoy the articles presented each week. •

Brought to you by Emily and Lee at Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage

Brought to you by local massage therapist Heather Mull

To achieve your strength and fitness goals, there are a few ways to motivate yourself, and stay on track. 1. Have a clear vision of your goal and why you want to achieve it. This will keep you encouraged when you have days that aren't as energised or motivating. 2. Don't overcomplicate getting started - the main thing is you start in some way, and continue your commitment. Consistency is key in the long term! 3. Preparation promotes an easier ability to stay focused on fitness goals and achievements, whether it be planning and preparing nutritionally wholesome meals for the week to support your activity levels, body and recovery, or scheduling in your exercise or training sessions each day amongst other activities.

Feeling Overworked? Out of control and rundown from a cycle of days of working to pay bills, being super-mum/dad if you’re a parent, staying in touch with people, and keeping up with the million other things still to ‘Be Done?’

7. Adequate sleep, regular healthy meals, staying hydrated with water, laughing, and talking with a mate can all be helpful. 8. Focus on what is needed to bring your mind back to a state of ‘Calm.’ •

1. Daily, make a realistic list of things you would like to get done. 2. Prioritise – most to least important, can something wait until tomorrow? 3. Is there someone who can help with any of these? 4. Tackle the least appealing tasks first to get them ticked off. 5. Avoid using stalling tactics like time wasting on social media.

4. Celebrate all achievements along the way towards your goal - no matter how small. These will create a ripple effect towards your overall goal! 5. Enjoy the exercise you choose to do. Get your body moving daily to reap the amazing health benefits of exercise! •

6. 20+ minutes per day of exercise- vital for producing feel-good hormones.

FOR TAKE-AWAY Open 4pm - 9pm Six Days (closed Mondays) We have a full range of delicious take-away food! Seafood, Swiss Chicken, Baguettes, heaps of Burgers and a full range of Pizzas. Plus Coffee, Milk Shakes, Thick Shakes, Ice-Creams and Desserts.

DRIVING TIP

NOV 27-29 The Alpine Challenge by Running Wild. 100 mile, 100 Km, 60km, 25km, 17km

What’s the best way to slow down in the snow? Use gears instead of brakes to slow down and watch for icy patches on shady parts of the road, through cuttings, on bridges and on winding stretches where ice may have formed over a thin layer of snow. Drive smoothly, with no sudden stops and starts or sudden turns & take care!
