If you’re looking for something just that little bit riskier… October 6th is the day. Look out for the MTB madness that is McKayos… there’s no other ride like it in Australia… snow, dirt, road and 18 kilometres of ‘knuckle clenching’ action. FROM THE CEO kilometres of hiking and riding trails up here in the Alps. If none of that floats your boats, well, we’ve got options there too. Rocky Valley Lake and the surrounding tributaries should be chocka-bloc full of trout, with a successful breeding season having concluded under the ice-covered protection of Rocky Valley and thanks to the icy flowing waters on the high plains. Since the resort is hosting the Australian Trout Fishing Championships in November, it’s clear, others think it’s a great place to fish too… Still looking for stuff to do in summer, you can sail, paddle board, gently cruise the lake in a kayak, or for the really brave, take a refreshing dip in the largest high-altitude lake in Australia. Oh yeah, and when the heat is on in the Valley, it’s generally 10 degrees (at least) cooler up here and every night is a doona night!
One of the unique features and joys of the high plains around Falls Creek is Rocky Valley Dam – and the amenity it provides. Pic – Ken Bell

Keep an eye on the website, www.fallscreek. com.au, it will change to its “summer green coat” shortly and all the events for Summer 2018/19 will begin. So, watch this space to see what’s on and we look forward to seeing you back, if not over summer, then next winter. Thanks to all, not the least, the resort management crew, who’s passion and devotion to the mountain and community can’t be understated, nor thanked enough. Finally, Ken Bell, editor of “This Week”… thanks for all that you do for the high country and the region…you’re a true legend.

FROM THE GM 100% Guest Satisfaction
T week!
his is the dream response to any guest survey, and I’m thrilled to share that this was our result last
What a way to finish the season with such positive feedback from our guests, and the result is not just reflective of the guests’ skiing experience, but the total resort experience they’ve had during their stay here in Falls Creek. It really takes the collaboration of the whole village to achieve these kinds of results and they should be celebrated – especially after over 100 plus days of operation when we’re all feeling a bit weary or ‘pleasantly exhausted’ …to quote a long time local! 2018 has been such an exciting season where we’ve seen new partners come on board – from BMW as the official mountain vehicle sponsor - to expanding our marketing partner program, it’s the sum of everyone’s efforts which have yielded such impressive results.
Enjoying the Sprint Riding. Pic – Lachy Keevers
Pre-season, village stakeholders came together as a collective to rally behind a common strategic positioning ‘Adventure Your Way’ and testing new hashtags which celebrate the unique benefits of Falls Creek which set this resort apart from our competitors.
Park and had the Paw Patrol pups in resort to entertain the kids during school holidays. Britt Cox came home, Nitro our terrain park sponsor bought their Global team to play, and Adam Gilchrist hosted another cricket event in the snow!
As we with heavy heart, look towards closing, we will have delivered 102 days of ski in ski out, have all terrain open for skiing and boarding and created many incredible ski memories for our guests (of all ages) for season 2018.
Under the pillars of ‘thrill and chill’, ‘alpine village vibe’ and ‘all trails lead you home’, at the lift company we reshaped our events calendar to make sure we were capturing moments that delivered on this experience to our guests, showcasing all of the excitement which have grown even bigger over the season.
We also brought back after an 18 year hiatus, the Summit Masters under lights celebrating Falls’ rich freestyle history, attracting original members of Team Red and saw many past competitors come and enjoy the spectacle, reminiscing old times and seeing one of our favourite home grown Olympians, Steve Lee take the crown.
Thank you for all of your support and as we look forward to season 2019, may it be just as fabulous as the last! •

FALLS CREEK HISTORICAL SOCIETY Season Wrap
W
hat seems to be the first line every time I write something about the Falls Creek Historical Society and its activities, it seems to start with – “It has been another busy season” Over the winter of 2018, we have continued on our path of developing our history through Art and Culture projects in association with various groups around the village. Our museum space is a little ‘limited’, so we will continue to look for alternative avenues and opportunities to display our history. We have accepted donations of memorabilia that continues to add to the colourful story and history of Falls Creek. We unveiled the Skyline plaque this winter, the final step in the celebrations of 70 years of Falls Creek as a village. Next time you are in Falls Creek, head down to the Gully and stand in front of the plaque and check out where the first lodge once stood. Over the last few months we have had success with grants that will enable us to take on projects over the summer including a physical and digital Arts, Culture,
Our New Frying Pan… • Rustic, industrial and chic. • Bar and grill in the heart of Falls Creek’s famous Village Bowl.
Environmental walk through the village and beyond. We are aligning ourselves with Resort Management, the local Environmental interest group and local Indigenous artist Tamara Murray to tell the story of Falls Creek. In addition to our various art projects we are thrilled to say that we have now been successful in our endeavour to gain Charity Status. After exhaustive paperwork we have fulfilled all the obligations of the Charity Commission. The next step is Deductible Gift Recipient status so that our very generous supporters will get some benefit from their continued support. We will also now be able to apply for more grants that are aligned with the charity status hopefully leading to even more unique ways of storytelling. We have been very fortunate to have another committed group of volunteers for the winter ensuring we were open six days a week throughout the season. We would like to extend a huge thankyou to Noelene, Diane, Meryl, Leo, Sam, Jo and Karen H who have all been available to share the museum experience with our guests. We now look to summer and the extension of our History Walks through the Alpine Region in collaboration with Diana Alpine Lodge and Ken Bell Enterprises. This year we have rebranded the product with the help of North East Tourism and in November will be launching Trails, Tales & Tucker. It will be a three hour experience with a guided talk and sumptuous local produce lunch through the beautiful huts of the alpine region. Our website is currently

THANKS TEAM And Now for Summer
I
t is only when you plan and start to write a thankyou and a bit of a summary for the season that you realise just how many people there are to thank. The good part here is that this realisation identifies the fact that it is a team effort. The whole resort is a team effort – from the snow clearers to the snow-makers; from the lifties to the ski patrollers, the resort could not function without all of these people and those not mentioned - to date. There is no-one in this resort more important than anyone else.
paper would publicly like to thank them for their efforts. These efforts have been mentioned before, and should be re-iterated here now. Thanks team. From the paper’s point of view, there are many to thank. Those that made the effort to contribute – and did a fantastic job in doing so. The truth is, this paper belongs to the community, and without your input we do not have a paper. And, of course, a special thank you to all of the supporters/advertisers who have paid to have the paper represent them. Without your support we do not have a paper.
The most important people are those that drive up the road (or get the bus). They pay full tote odds for their gear, their chains, their skiing/boarding and everything else. They have a great experience – fostered by great staff - and they go home happy. Snowsports is like that – you exercise for up to eight hours, breathing in crystal clear air and enjoying some absolutely fantastic scenery. It is these wonderful guests that we thank first. We thank you all for making the effort.
Thanks to all of the team that have contributed photography – all of which helps to make the paper that represents the resort look totally professional.
Another aspect is the good positive feedback from guests, usually just a little note or comment to say thanks to everyone, the staff have been great and friendly and helpful. That’s what it is about – being able to work in a snowsports resort and look after people on holidays is not that hard and the professional and friendly way our team have gone about it is a credit to them. So, thanks to the whole team – from the boss up!
And the printer; the team at Specialty Press I have been dealing with for 39 years and they have always produced a quality product on time ready for the team at Remo’s Transport to bring it - hot off the press - to the mountain. We could go on! Thankyou to everyone, advertisers, supporters, readers – in fact the whole team. Once again, it’s a team effort.
On a personal note, I would like to thank the crew on Guest Services, including the lifties, the instructors, the park crew and the team in black. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and looking after our guests. While we have this dedicated team of Guest Service personnel, it is actually the role of all staff to be Guest Services representatives – and you do it well.
Thanks to the young team that braved all weather to get the paper delivered around the mountain. This year was particularly tough and Nik, Molly, Finn, Maddi, Grace, Indi, Josie, Alex, Harrison, Will and Ben did a fabulous job in some of the most trying (read wet) circumstances. Excellent work!
Now for Summer Cycling starts to rear its popular head and this summer is looking good. We start with the Mitta to Mount Beauty on Sunday 28th October; followed by the Ignition Event on 17th and 18th November to open our new trails.
Regards, Ken Bell

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS End of Season Wrap Baby
A
s I came to realise, this is the last edition of the ‘This Week’ magazine for the season. We can enjoy the remaining couple of weeks of snow - but alas we start to move on with our lives. Trail Report The last trail report of the season, it’s still looking very nice indeed. Don’t be put off about the start of Bogong High Plains road not being fully groomed at the start (just as you head off from Windy Corner) as that bit always dwindles early on. The rest of the trail network cover is ‘very good’ with 30km of trails being constantly groomed and conditions remain very ‘Springy’ – pretty much just means you should get out there as soon as possible early in the morning to enjoy the best fresh/hard grooming. After about 11am the snow starts to get pretty sloppy and you’re better off in a reclined lounge with some tanning oil, just baking. Like I wrote about last week, whilst the

grooming is in good operation, be sure to mix it up with a bit of crust skiing. This is optimal if temperatures were sub zero overnight, with a pair of skate skis and a little bit of knowledge of where to go. Of course though, it’s fun to just try beside the groomed trails like along Sun Valley or in the Park. What’s on to tidy up Falls Creek official season extends on to the 7th of October which is pretty cool, we have a few things remaining for the season in the xc world. Just recently the National Junior Development U16 Spring camp has been on here at Falls Creek and it was a success. Lots of learning and fun and hopefully inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams. This weekend we are hosting the National Junior Team for a five day training camp. This camp includes all

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Nevertheless, before I come back to Falls Creek next year, I will be off to Canberra to finish my Uni semester (shout out to ANU) before heading over to Davos, Switzerland to begin my World Cup Career in December. As a matter of fact the rest of the senior team has similar plans. Howman’s Mark Pollock will be heading over like me to begin the World Cup crusade and hopefully get some mad results at World Champs come February. The Juniors will be doing their World Juniors Precamp in Davos too before heading North for the World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland. Both World Juniors and World Champs are set to be absolute pearlers this Winter with World Champs in Seefeld, Austria looking like the biggest event in Central Europe for a long time, and Lahti being a well-established home of large ski festivals for the past decade or so.
WINTER EDITION SEVENTEEN
We talk about National Team, but we talk about other stuff. They’ll be a number of AD PROOF local Aussie Hoppet skiers heading overseas to chase those Worldloppet points. A tip? Ronice Goebel said this winter that her favourite Worldloppets to do have been the Icelandic Loppet, the Marcialonga in Italy and as a matter of fact, the Aussie Kangaroo Hoppet itself. So if the stars align, see if you can tick those first two off and make Ronice proud.

eter was one of a kind. He came to Falls Creek in the 1970’s as an electrician. He became one of Falls Creek’s legends. He was the man who had the Falls Creek Search & Rescue join the SES in 1981. He was a very strong willed man and once he had an idea he became obsessed. It is because of Peter that the SES now has their headquarters. He arranged for our unit to help demolish the old ‘Round House’ and we received Dawn Lodge as payment. Both of these buildings were either demolished (Round House) or relocated to make way for Astra Lodge. He helped organise a truck then had Dawn Lodge transported through the village to the site the SES have now. It was quite an adventure, with two men on the top to

major battle for him. After many years he had a kidney and pancreas transplant. After this he spent many years travelling and promoting to school children and others to think about organ donation. He lived for more than 20 years as a non-diabetic. Peter then lived in Sydney then retired to Adelaide where two of his children lived nearby. Peter had heart problems, then last summer his health failed and we lost him. He was much loved by his family and many, many friends. arcus has been performing since the age of five. There is nothing better than entertaining a crowd. Whilst he has been singing and dancing for 20 years Marcus says that you can never get enough. Marcus has been studying Elvis for quite some time. “I would never do Elvis if I wasn’t doing it right”. Elvis was a perfectionist and I honour that to my fullest. With replica costumes made professionally from the USA you can see the detail that has gone into these costumes. “I love watching Elvis move, he is a free spirit and the music takes him places. This is one thing I love to pride myself on and that’s to shake rattle and roll just like Elvis”. Marcus has also assisted other Elvis tribute acts by showing them how to move like Elvis and also showing them other things that other acts have not picked up on that Elvis use to do on stage. “I have also provided my dancers to these acts to help them out.” If I can help others in any way I will. I just love being a part of the Elvis world. Marcus has a real connection with audiences he makes everyone feel as if they are part of the act. I like to add a bit of comedy saying things like Elvis use to and also adding in some of my own. I have had plenty of audience members saying that they like my act because it breaks the ice. Not being Elvis, you have to do something a little different and it works for me. Putting this show together has been a dream for a long time. Whilst always doing Elvis small scale I always wanted to

GROWLER TURNS 80 Happy Birthday
G
rowler’s just turned eighty, a most momentous matter, I’m glad he didn’t skydive, I’m glad he didn’t splatter; Or else my poem would not be read, and that would be the
pits, And if Hans has broken something, it would sure give him the shits. Now Hansel came to Falls Creek a hundred years ago, And kissed a thousand snow-bunnies up here in the snow; The girls were really gorgeous - mostly heaven sent, And I think that Growler’s conquest- rate was eighty-five percent! Sorry, sorry Growler, your secret’s safe with me, I wouldn’t blab about your life, especially at Koki, Where you organised a Tom Jones Night whenever you were able, With half a dozen naked girls dancing on the table. And Hans, if I recall, you were a gunman of repute, With your trusty High-Powered Winchester you really loved to shoot; Across that old Volkswagon - (we have photographic proof ) That you fired a little low and opened up the roof!
He also worked on ski-patrol, back in seventy-three, There was Tim the Finn and Crooky and a couple more and me; Growler liked an ale or two, starting out at ten, (Our ski patrol was somewhat slack, when we worked way back then). So Growler checked the Frying Pan on every second run, And chatted girls and drank free beers and really had some fun; Thus if you broke your leg, in the Fryers on the stair, You knew that you’d be saved, for Hans was always there. Ah, those were action days – he looked so debonair, As he leaped his big black snowmobile eight foot in the air; I remember how he towed me up – I thought that I was dead When at sixty-miles-an-hour, he dropped me on my head. You’ve skied the world, you’ve surfed the waves, you’ve led a highpowered life, Of your fame up here in Falls Creek, the stories - they are rife; Your friends are here around you, so let’s all raise our beers, And give a toast to Hans - may he live a hundred years! Phantom
He started out in Koki, or was it Ripparoo, I can scarce remember, but I tell you this is true; He fairly was a wild-man, he hurled around the bars, Keeping out of fights and turning over cars. He took me underneath his wing, and I learned a little game, Which was mainly based on drinking, ‘Thumper’ was its name; He poured me Captain Morgan’s Rum – he really was a pal. And I awoke next morning in Mt Beauty Hospital. He ran a restaurant at The Man, but that was just a bore, The chef pulled out a knife, so Growler broke his jaw; He couldn’t stand the violence, he couldn’t stand the rifts, So he thought he’d take it easy and run the Falls Creek Lifts.

OUR COMMUNITY And Its People
T
he Dederang Store has had quite a transformation into a coffee and food destination, thanks to the hard work of its owners Ross Packham and his partner Craig Cadman. Ross and Craig took over the store five years ago, after finally moving to the area. Even though Ross had grown up in Albury, it was on a drive through the area 18 years ago when he discovered a love for the area and climate. “I think this area is beautiful, it’s stunning.” Ross says “The colder and more miserable it is, the more beautiful. I love the winter.” Ross has a background in coffee. He ran a café in Albury for nine years before joining the coffee franchise Hudson’s, first as a store manager, then later in charge of all national operations. For eight years he travelled the country overseeing all company-owned stores. With Craig, they moved from Albury to Melbourne, to Adelaide, back to Melbourne, and then to Wodonga. Ross would get himself organised on Sundays to fly interstate on Mondays, and often not return home until Friday. But Ross is someone who loves to work. He is a passionate, energetic person, and has a fine eye for detail and reading what people want. The Dederang Store was a tired place when he and Craig took over. Now the store is open 70 hours a week, and people drive up from Albury or down from Mount Beauty to sit with a coffee in the clean and WINTER EDITION FIVE remodelled café. While I sit with customers come and ADRoss, PROOF go from the store, and he greets them all by name. The café is a social hub for this farming community, and coffee isn’t the only reason why people drop in. Ross loves the people here, and in return the store has garnered quite a following. Over five years he has gotten to know not just locals, but even regulars who come from interstate on All Insurance Repairs Windscreen Replacement All Work Guaranteed VACC Accredited Ph: 03 5754 4497 Lot 4 Nelse Street, Mount Beauty 3699 E: mbsmash@pacific.net.au
their way to the mountains. Early on, when he and Craig were getting the café set up, Ryan Lynch from Mount Beauty’s Honeybird Coffee turned up with some beans for them to try. Ross told him they didn’t even have a coffee grinder yet, so Ryan went out to his car and returned with a new one. Since then, Honeybird’s ‘Dark Lover’ has been their blend of choice. And the coffee must be good. While I’m there Ross is having a brand new espresso machine installed, and he explains that some mornings there are cars waiting out front when they open at 7:30am. When he’s not working, Ross takes care of the gardens around the store. He originally wanted to do lots of drawing and painting when they moved here, but admits he hasn’t even picked up a paintbrush yet. The work of improving the store is endless, and he wants to have more of the store selling giftwares. It gives people something to look at, and his relatives run the antique store down the road and often supply him with new and interesting objects. Ross and Craig don’t have any plans to leave. Ross admits that he’d never move back to Albury or Wodonga, but if anything he’d move further up the valley to escape the summer heat and flies. After years of travelling the country, he seems perfectly content living in Dederang, pouring his passion and energy into an increasingly popular general store and café. • Struan Jones

FALL LINES Tawonga Primary Bikathon The kids did their Bike-a-thon last week at Tawonga Primary. They rode for 2.5 hours and completed 49 laps. Their fundraising page https://give.everydayhero.com/au/ tawonga-primary-school-farmers-relief has now raised $2223.99 plus there are still people that need to donate their per lap pledge amount. With those included, we are around $2600. This equates to 100 times the amount we would have got if we ran a casual dress day with 26 students. Thank you very much for your support. The kids have been blown away by the donations and they worked extremely hard to put together an amazing event. •

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Athena @ Frueauf
offers that unique ski out – ski in facility that makes the village unique as a snow resort.
T
his stylishly renovated alpine apartment features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Apartment Athena offers ultimate convenience for a lucky buyer - everything has been renovated for a new owner to enjoy.
As an all-year-round resort and holiday destination, Falls Creek has a lot to offer. World class mountain bike trails have been constructed in the resort adding up to a total of over 40km of trails. This has led to lots of fun for locals and adds amenity and attraction for visitors.
Located in the managed complex of Frueauf Village, this property is approximately 59.1sqm and sleeps six. The master bedroom has a king bed and the second room with two bunks. Both bathrooms are crisp, white and fresh. There is a large ski drying room with laundry facilities. This apartment is very private and has easy access in the complex.
We then have the fully sealed Bogong High Plains Road giving access to the fabulous high plains, the Mitta Valley on the other side – including the Blue Duck and Payne’s Hut. A comprehensive suite of events makes summer in Falls Creek a nice time to be here. The Dragon Boat festival; the Alpine Challenge; the Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and the World’s Longest Lunch are highlights of the summer - as are the 12°C cooler temperatures on those stinking 40°C summer days in the city.
Athena feels warm and inviting, it has a lovely open plan kitchen area that accesses a private balcony with new hot tub. This apartment is truly nestled in the alpine nature. Frueauf Village has a long alpine head lease to 2052 and the complex has onsite management.
At $370,000, this property definitely deserves and inspection. Call the agent to make an appointment. Please note this apartment has not been in holiday rental previously. Christa Smit (Zirknitzer), Director, Zirky Real Estate, Mb: 0402 277 808. •
Frueauf Village is located centrally in the village and is within easy walking distance to some of our finest dining establishments – with one of them being in the complex itself. Quality ski hires and retail outlets are also quite close.
Clean, comfortable and recently renovated. Pics - Courtesy of the agent
