HOT, HOT HEAT! With temperatures rising and the hottest days of summer approaching it is time to get organized and make the best of it! During the first weeks of July Bermuda will be getting together and celebrating fashion with a number of exciting events including the Evolution Fashion Show on Saturday July 6. Evolution is expected to draw thousands of visitors and locals together at the City Hall & Arts Centre. The Natwest Island Games is another big event happening from July 13 - 19 bringing athletes, spectators and journalists from twentyfour members of the International Island Games Association. The association is mainly made up of European islands, but also include Bermuda, Cayman, Greenland, St Helena and the Falkland Islands. A very exciting week for Bermuda! There are plenty of daily activities happening that we have put together for your review on pages 20 - 22. Events such as Harbour Nights, Destination Dockyard and The Big Chill will keep you busy and enjoying our Island Culture. Our water sports section is packed with ideas to get you in and on the water this summer. Have you tried paddle boarding? Island Winds will be taking us out for a test drive so be sure to follow us on Facebook and see how we make out! There is a new art gallery in the Old Town of St. George, definitely worth taking a trip to check out. The first exhibitor will be Bermudian Artist, James Cooper. All of this activity is most likely making you hungry. We have definitely been doing our homework in the cuisine department. On page 74 learn about your fifth sense at a great summer hot spot perfect for your next gourmet breakfast, lunch or evening happy hour get together. From page 84 to the end of our magazine we have just gotten plain naughty with all of the taste testing and fun we have been having. All for your reading pleasure, of course. Don’t forget to download our APP!

BERMUDA haha The Summer of Love By Roger Crombie
In a famous Monty Python sketch, John Cleese portrays a vocational guidance counsellor. Speaking to a man who hopes to become a chartered accountant, Cleese says: “Your report here says that you are an extremely dull person. Our experts describe you as an appallingly dull fellow, unimaginative, timid, lacking in initiative, spineless, easily dominated, no sense of humour, tedious company and irrepressibly drab and awful. And whereas in most professions these would be considerable drawbacks, in chartered accountancy they are a positive boon.” It seems that the evening after the show first aired, Cleese had dinner with an accountant. Cleese thought his dinner companion would be deeply offended, had he watched the show. It turned out that he had watched it. “How did you feel about the chartered accountant sketch?” Cleese asked, apprehensively. “Hilarious,” the fellow said. “You weren’t offended by me going on about how boring chartered accountants are?” Cleese asked. “Not at all,” the other fellow said, “I’m not a chartered accountant. I’m a certified accountant.” To appreciate the irony fully, you’d need to know that the British accounting profession is segregated into classes, as is everything in Britain. In what some might think descending order, the chartered accountant stands at the apex; then comes the certified accountant, a more business-related specialist. A slew of others, more industry-specific, round out the base of the pyramid. I am a chartered accountant. I am a Fellow, and also a Fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants. For I’m two jolly good fellows. You now have all the information necessary to proceed to the remainder of the column. Jill was the first girl I ever thought I loved. On qualifying after four years’ hard work and study, I was inordinately proud of myself and told Jill the good news in person. “I’m a chartered accountant!” I said. “My Dad’s one of those,” Jill replied. Matters proceeded, and one August day I met her father, in his living room in suburban Muswell Hill. We shook hands and I set out to prove worthy of his daughter’s affections. “I’m a chartered accountant,” I said brightly, to show how utterly bonafied I was, adding: “I understand you’re one, too.” “No,” he said, “I’m only certified.” I was greatly more crushed by this news than he was, for I had revealed myself to be a snob and a shallow type. Small wonder, then, that Jill and I drifted apart, unable to surmount the class barrier of my superior stupidity. That, and she hated me. This was 1969, a time history recalls as the Summer of Love. Young people were experimenting with this and that, wearing wild clothes, revolting against the straightjacket the 1950s imposed on life, and taking endless amounts of drugs. I was taking endless amounts of exams. It was for the best. You can’t carry out a successful audit on drugs. You can’t really carry out a successful anything on drugs. The message is clear, kids: don’t do drugs. Be an accountant instead. 12 This Week in Bermuda | JULY 2013

Meet ELY Dolphin Quest | Royal Naval Dockyard Meet Ely, a 10-year old female dolphin from Dolphin Quest Bermuda. Ely was born on June 5, 2003 and developed into an energetic dolphin, and more recently has become a fun-loving mother after giving birth to Marley in the spring of 2010. Ely is distinguished by her vibrant pink belly (a genetic trait passed down from her mom, Bailey) and a slight freckling behind her eyes. Ely is easier to spot while leaping through the air. She is most often the one attempting to get trainers’ and guests’ attention by showing off her high jumps, before vocalizing and squirting water!

Art Matters Making Pictures: Making Memories By lisa howie, Director, bermuda National Gallery
A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting talented New York artist, Matthew Karas, a photographer who has the uncanny ability to capture dancers in motion. We discussed his portfolio and the connection of his artwork to the flourishing dance culture here in Bermuda. He kindly offered to join us for a lecture, The Possibilities of Photography, and a three-hour workshop in partnership with United Dance Productions July 26 and 27 respectively. Please see www.mattkaras.com to learn more about his artwork; and see www.bng. bm for more information on the events here at the BNG. Photography as an art form is more alive than ever, and we acknowledge this both in our current exhibitions and educational programmes. Come and join us in City Hall Arts Centre, Hamilton for the provocative photojournalism and film exhibition entitled Eyes on the World in partnership with The Alexia Foundation, as well as the intimate family portraits by local artist Meredith Andrews. Opening mid-June is the first ever satellite for the Bermuda National Gallery, called BNG East, located in historic Bridge House, St. George’s. Adjacent to the Towne Square, the BNG East opens with James Cooper: Contemporary Conversation. Cooper is a local artist whose primary medium is photography. He tends to explore common objects in unusual ways, making images that are at once playful, symbolic, and romantic. For the summer, we are dedicated to Youth Camera Action, a photography programme for middle school students. Each session is a week long with students learning the techniques of the manual mode while dappling into short film and stop animation. They tour the island to various locations, such as the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo, where there is a display of former participants’ artwork. The accessibility of photography, and its immediacy with the digital camera, makes the art form so appealing, especially to young art enthusiasts. They can delete or rework their images on location, arrive at decent portfolios within one week’s efforts, and leave with the basic skills that may well set them on the journey toward a professional interest such as those artists named in this article. Come soon to enjoy what the BNG has to offer; admission is free. Tours each Thursday at 10:30 am. Group tours can be arranged by contacting: education@bng.bm Call ahead to confirm: 441-295-9428. www.bng.bm

Walking through the historic town of St. George’s feels like a step back in time. From Gates Fort and Fort St. Catherine to Barrack Hill and the Unfinished Church, St. George’s is packed with historical sites just waiting to be explored. The Bermuda Heritage Museum will also take you places you have never been, as will the walking tours offering plenty of stories from Bermuda’s past. Bermuda’s culture is alive and well in the old town and some pretty cute beaches hide out there too. With great restaurants, shopping and a brand new art gallery the old town is definitely an ideal destination for the whole day! BNG East is a satellite location of the Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) located in the City of Hamilton on Church Street. BNG East will feature local artists from the past and the present showcasing historical artworks as well as contemporary. Art is one of the most wonderful things that we can dare to explore and understand if we take the time just like our history and culture. This is why it is such a perfect fit for a new art gallery to open in such a historically and culturally rich part of our island. BNG East encourages locals and visitors to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and visit the newest gallery in Bermuda. First to exhibit is local artist James Cooper showcasing photographic and mixed media works. BNG East: Bridge House, 1 Bridge Street, St. George’s, 441 297 9428 Current Exhibition: James Cooper: Contemporary Conversation Gallery Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday 11 am to 4 pm Thurs & Fri 11 am to 6 pm Closed Monday 60 This Week in Bermuda | JULY 2013

A very popular painter of Bermuda scenes between the 1930s and 50s. He inspired many upcoming local artists, teaching and himself working from a studio at the base of Gibbs Hill lighthouse. This building which appears in several of his works seems to be up for sale at the present time. His images of flowers, trees, water, cloud formations and landscape are hard to beat. Highly collectable.

Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery
Your trip to Bermuda would not be complete without a memorable gift from Bermuda’s own Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery. Her art jewellery is meticulously designed by hand and is inspired by the colours and natural motifs of our beautiful island. Visitors often choose pieces from the Bermuda Reef Collection, inspired by the boiler reefs on Bermuda’s famous picturesque South Shore. She sets Bermuda’s own pink coral sand in each extraordinary piece and translates the essence of the reef ’s tide pools into tiny wearable treasures. Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery pendants, earrings and bracelets range from tiny and delicate to bold statement pieces, and everything in between. Some of Alexandra’s most sought after pieces are cufflinks - many distinguished gentlemen wear them to special occasions. Each unique piece is a meaningful souvenir that can be enjoyed long after your holiday. Golf Across the isalnd PGA Grand Slam is on my Mind By kim Swan jp, Teaching Professional Port Royal Golf Developmental Program
It’s official, summer is here and it is during this bright season when in the world of professional golf, the final three major champions are crowned, at the US Open, British Open and the PGA Championship who then join the Masters Champion Adam Scott to qualify for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in October at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda. At Port Royal Golf Course that same focus on golf ’s major championships during the summer months greatly elevates the anticipation of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in the fall - as with each major Grand Slam fever intensifies - adoring fans and volunteers anxiously waiting a chance to have a glimpse of the world’s great major champions. It is noteworthy that the efforts of the Port Royal staff, committee and volunteers often go unnoticed - efforts that each day are geared to ensure a quality world class golf facility await the arrival of world’s major champions who grace the pristine Whale Bay coastline. Make no mistake, the preparation work to prepare Port Royal Golf Course for the imminent arrival of the four major champions is extensive and is carried out over many months leading up to that fabulous week in October when Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda is televised and showcased around the world. At Port Royal we feel that it is important to take the time to say thank you to our patrons who play our course year round - both our members, the general public and our beloved visitors - and also to our outstanding staff, especially the grounds crew who prepare Port Royal Golf Course to the standard of the PGA of America’s Championship Committee specifications. Our staff love the fact that they are a part of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf experience year round as daily ambassadors of events past and the next one in October. The Port Royal Golf Course family are extremely proud that our course becomes the focus of world attention and they put their heart and soul into preparing the course and extolling the virtues of a great public facility - the Port Royal Golf Course. The golfers that participate in our golf coaching program - the Port Royal Golf Developmental Program - also take great pride in knowing that we are honing their skills on the same golf course which will showcase four of the greatest players currently on the PGA Tour. The techniques and methodology that we share are universally accepted and proven in competition internationally and locally. We invite you to visit Port Royal Golf Course - to play a round, receive coaching or simply visit our lounge, savour the spectacular views from the verandah while enjoying a Dark & Stormy our national drink.

Do You Know... … About the ill-Fated Flight of the ‘Tradewind’? By Horst Augustinovic
In January 1931 Mrs. Beryl Hart and Lieutenant William S. MacLaren attempted to cross the Atlantic via Bermuda and the Azores and establish commercial flights between New York and Paris. Mrs. Hart held a transport pilot’s license and Lieutenant MacLaren was the flight’s copilot/navigator. Their plane was a Bellanca CH300 high wing seaplane called ‘Tradewind’.
The ‘Tradewind’ at Hinson’s Island in Bermuda.
Lieutenant William S. MacLaren, navigator, and Mrs. Beryl Hart, pilot, of the ill-fated Bellanca CH300 ‘Tradewind’. 66 This Week in Bermuda | JULY 2013
Courtesy of the Boston Public Library, Leslie Jones Collection.
On January 3rd they took off from Hampton Roads, Virginia, but returned after some 16 hours in the air because of bad weather conditions. On January 7th they were more successful, having left Hampton Roads at 6am they landed in Hamilton Harbour at 2pm. Shortly after take-off the fuel pump had failed and both aviators took turns pumping fuel from the main tank to the engine, resulting in some blistered hands! During their three days in Bermuda the couple were treated as heroes and entertained at a gala dinner at the Princess Hotel. On that occasion Lieut. MacLaren made the following comments: “When the invitation first came, Mrs. Hart was somewhat embarrassed at the thought of being the only woman present at a dinner attended by men only. My answer to her was ‘you have done a man’s job and well earned the right to be present at a stag party’.
Do You Know Turning to the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Lieut. MacLaren continued: “You, sir, have referred to your lovely island’s interest in us. I can assure you it is nothing compared with our interest in you. Having flown over many miles of water you have no idea how good Bermuda looks to a navigator when he first catches a glimpse of her”. He continued: “Now Gentlemen, I would not have you think that ours is a stunt flight or a foolhardy undertaking. Commercial flying between the USA and Europe is coming for a certainty and it is necessary that practical knowledge of the conditions pertaining to success should be learned. Theories may be studied in an office, but someone has got to begin the actual practice of flying. That is what we are here for”. On the following day, Saturday, January 10th, Mrs. Beryl Hart and Lieut. William MacLaren took off for the Azores, 2,100 miles away. Tragically they were never heard from again.
A letter carried on the ‘Tradewind’ from New York to Bermuda. It shows the intended route from New York to Paris.
A rather prophetic postcard sent by Lieut. MacLaren to Mr. Roessler of East Orange, N.J. Albert C. Roessler was a stamp dealer, best known for his cacheted envelopes, particularly of first flights. Comments? Email netlink@link.bm

Your Fifth Sense
Taste One Four One
with Chef John Lema, Chef Stephen McCarthy & Manager Kia Wolffe By Candice Dickinson
Blessed with five major senses we often forget to enjoy them. We are too busy trying to get somewhere fast and ignore surrounding sounds. Blinded by tunnel vision rarely noticing nature in bloom, we can’t remember the last time we stopped to smell a flower and we are far too busy punching keypads keeping up with multiple conversations on our smart phones to even think about touch. At Taste, Chef John and Chef Stephen simply will not allow you to ignore your fifth sense. You will Taste, and we are pretty certain that you will like. Whether you are a new mom looking for the perfect stroller friendly place to get the girls together for breakfast, a working professional looking for a new hot spot to take your business associates for a power lunch, a local socialite looking for the ultimate happy hour or a retiree on the hunt for a great bar stool to call your own, Taste is where you belong. It’s All Happening
Take me to the Swizzle Inn!!! By Candice Dickinson
Swizzle Inn Baileys Bay
New dining room!
The first stop many visitors make when they arrive in Bermuda is at the oldest and most famous pub on the island, our beloved Swizzle Inn. Many burst through the doors looking for the infamous Rum Swizzle and an hour or two later, they swagger out. The original location in Baileys Bay has been a favourite among locals and visitors since it opened in 1932. With an inviting and cozy two story balcony and old time rustic indoor setting, it’s no wonder why this is a hot spot. The windows are plastered with stickers while inside business cards and graffiti cover the walls and are wedged into the pubs’ doorframes. There is a shelf inside full of books that have seen better days. Like the old saying goes, never judge a book by its cover, especially these books because inside you will find notes from guests that date back to the beginning. Some of this memorabilia has been collecting dust for almost eighty years. How cool is that?!?!
Swizzle Inn South Shore
The South Shore location opened its doors in 2005 and has been growing in popularity since with its balcony regularly packed with passers-by. Inside the pub has a similar rustic feel as the Baileys Bay location and has been collecting memorabilia in the same fashion. Both restaurants share the same menu offering fabulous British and Bermudian dishes. From the Hot Crab Dip with bubbling cheese and lump crab meat served with Pita wedges, to the Classic Nachos voted best in Bermuda by everyone who eats them, and how about the BBQ Chicken Pizza which is a California classic featuring BBQ Chicken, homemade BBQ sauce, onions, smoked mozzarella, red onions and green peppers. Then there are the homemade burgers from The Burger Bar, how could you possibly choose from the original classic Swizzle Burger made with 6oz’s of seasoned beef, crisp bacon, real cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato on a classic sesame bun or The Wahoo Burger, made with ground fresh wahoo seasoned with cilantro, lime and ginger and served with Wasabi mayo, lettuce and tomato! 84 This Week in Bermuda | JULY 2013
It’s All Happening Hungry yet?
Now time to tease your thirst!
Whatever delicious dish(s) you choose, you will have to also decide on a beverage, to wash it all down. The Rum Swizzle is an obvious choice and you definitely have to try it but we also suggest a Seabreeze with Finlandia Grapefruit Vodka and who should you ask to make this for you? Any of the bartenders will be happy to make it but we suggest you ask for Rogernae Lightbourne if you’re at Baileys Bay. A good drink is great but when a bartender serves it with a smile like Rogernae – your experience is complete.
Top 5 things to do at:
Swizzle Inn Baileys Bay 1. Check out the newly renovated dining room
Grapefruit Seabreeze upstairs. It has a seriously massive TV for all the Finlandia Grapefruit Vodka sport watching you need. Cranberry Juice 2. Stop by on a Saturday or Sunday for Grapefruit Juice Gosling’s Drunkin BBQ Chicken. A can of Garnish with a lime slice Gosling’s Ginger Beer is actually wedged up *Pour ingredients into a shaker over ice, the butt of the chicken before it is glazed with a Dark ‘n’ Stormy Sauce and then baked shake just a few times and pour into a cocktail glass. and prepared for your tasting pleasure. You will love this we promise! Natalie’s Signature 3. If you haven’t met Ray you’re missing out. Head over on Thursdays – Mondays for some Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Ginger ale serious entertainment. 4. On Thursdays try our Trivia with Mike Bishop, *Pour ingredients over ice, stir & enjoy! find out how smart you really are. 5. Pancho is another must-meet entertainer! Check in on any Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (12-3pm) or Friday (6-9pm) night for some sure to be good times.
Swagger Out Gift Shop
Found at both locations!
Swizzle Inn South Shore 1.Order a Pitcher of Swizzle and sit off on the
balcony after a long day at one of our famous South Shore beaches. 2. Leave your business card on a wall inside for people to see for years to come. 3. Check out Pancho on Sundays (1–5pm). 4. Choose from 4 flavours of WINGS WINGS WINGS, the first and still the best in Bermuda. 5. Stop by, order one of Swizzle’s five delightful sandwiches to go, be sure to have a rum swizzle while you wait and then swagger on down to Southlands Beach for a picnic.

The Chef’s Table
Harbourfront Restaurant & Komodaru Sushi Lounge By Candice Dickinson
Photography By Pierangelo Lanfranchi
Get Spoiled this Summer at Harbourfront! Located on the waters edge adjacent to the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), just outside the City of Hamilton, this stunning restaurant claims the most picturesque view of Hamilton Harbour. Enjoy only the freshest produce, seafood, choice meats, an exceptional wine list, delightful cocktails and a variety of dining options including the Komodaru Sushi Lounge and the new, very sophisticated but oh so fun patio lounge. The award-winning establishment treats each guest with the highest quality service giving them no choice but to return again and again. An absolute favourite among locals and frequent visitors, Harbourfront isn’t just a restaurant it‘s an adventure.
“A customer once said ’your menu is a 3rd Asian, 3rd Fusion and 3rd fine dining’. They were correct, in order for people to come frequently they need to be able to enjoy a new experience each and every time. We can’t make everyone happy and it is challenging to have such a diverse menu but it works and our customers are very happy and they come back again and again so this is why we do what we do.” Pierangelo Lanfranchi

The Chef’s Table Komodaru Sushi Lounge Step inside the gorgeous and intimate sushi lounge at Harbourfront for lunch, happy hour or dinner. Happy hour at Harbourfront offers a great selection of beautiful sushi plates starting at just $5.95 a roll and why stop there when you can choose a complimenting glass of wine at $5.95 a glass! It is the perfect place to go after a long day to catch up with friends and loved ones. Make a reservation and request to be seated on the patio if the weather is inviting and why not make your experience complete with a chilled glass of Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial N/V. Harbourfront recently redesigned their sushi menu and offer gluten free options. If that isn’t exciting enough, the infamous Togarachi will officially be on the menu along with other favourites such as the Nilo, Roul, Richard and Renaldo named after Harbourfronts four chefs! Don’t forget to ask about other special dishes and rolls named after some of Harbourfronts special regulars. You might just become one of them so you should start thinking about what ingredients you would have in your signature dish!
Nilo
A fantastic combination of spicy tuna, crispy shrimp tempura and sweet tasting eel wrapped with tuna. Imagine delicious layers of spicy salmon, fresh avocado, spicy mayonnaise, wrapped with fresh salmon and sprinkled with shallots and very special spicy Harbourfront sauce.
Roul
(Shhhh. It’s a secret)
Renaldo
Wind down and then get right back up again with the Renaldo, a smooth transition of cream cheese, spicy yellowtail, crabmeat and shrimps with a kick of spicy crabmeat and chili sauce on top..
Indulge in this magnificent roll made up of lush lobster and crabmeat then wrapped in avocado and topped with caviar.

The Chef’s Table
Fresh Produce, Seafood & Choice Meats At Harbourfront you can enjoy sushi during happy hour with friends on Monday, indulge in international inspired dishes while impressing business acquaintances over lunch on Wednesday and then spoil your loved one during a romantic terrace dinner on Friday with a little of both. A great experience if you are dining with a group is the Porter House Steak, cooked on a stone along with succulent shrimps and scallops. Once delivered to your table, this dish keeps on cooking! Harbourfront will most likely bring out your adventurous side and you might like to try the Homemade Ravioli Wild Boar Venison Ragout! On the other hand you may just want to sit back and let your taste buds go wild while enjoying the Fish Quattro. This dish can’t even be explained, you will just have to try it yourself. It is that good. Fish Quattro • Rockfish Pierangelo style served with a selection of crunchy buttery asparagus spheres. • Seared tuna with wasabi sauce and beans • Wahoo Bermuda style with almond slices, bananas and roast potatoes • Bonita with saffron sauce and bok choy Harbourfront Manager and Photographer Pierangelo Lanfranchi, not only spoils his guests but takes the time to really get to know everyone and make sure that whatever it is that they are looking for, they will find it at Harbourfront.
