Temperatures may be falling this month but the heat is defintily on at Port Royal Golf Course with the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in full swing from October 14 - 16. Masters Champion Adam Scott, U.S. Open Champion Justin Rose, PGA Champion Jason Dufner and defending champion Padraig Harrington, who replaces Phil Mickelson, will be their best in this years PGA Grand Slam.
Photography Š Akil J. Simmons
In 1979 the PGA started out as an 18-hole, single-day charity event. Today we sit front row to some of the best golfers in the world playing a 36 hole game for a $1.35 million purse. With more than 100 countries tuned in, one might say that this event is a pretty big deal!
Appearing just above and on our cover are a few nice shots of Padraig Harrington during last years PGA Grand Slam. The full photo is shown above featuring left to right Bubba Watson, Padraig Harrington, Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley. It was a great time last year and we expect this year to be even better! BERMUDA haha Star Struck... By Roger Crombie
I met the star golfer Jack Nicklaus once. He was in Bermuda to promote a sporting development in the West End that, to the best of my knowledge, failed to develop. I don’t commit golf, as a wag once put it, although I find that on TV, with its hushed tones, golf does help me nap on a hot summer afternoon. Even though I wouldn’t know a niblick from a mashie (they might be the same thing), you could tell with Nicklaus from about 40 feet away that he was special. What he projected was his greatness, rather than his golfness. Much the same applies to all truly great people. The greatest of them all, by his own admission, was Mohammed Ali, or Cassius Clay as he was called when seen at a hotel, fending off a crowd of reporters. Once the brain registered who he was, one was struck by (a) his greatness and (b) his size. To this day, I don’t know if his size enhanced his greatness, or vice versa. George Harrison, not a noted sporting figure but a Beatle, wore his greatness without it affecting his size. He was entirely down to earth, even though you could argue that, at the time, he was the third most famous man on the planet. I had inadvertently trespassed into his world, but he was very relaxed about it. So was I, oddly enough … … whereas I wasn’t when I met Donald Rumsfeld, the man who went to war in Iraq not so long ago. This was 20 years before that war started. In an elevator in Chicago, the two of us spent an uncomfortable interlude on my way to the 34th floor and his to the very top floor. Rumsfeld was CEO of the company in which I was a minion’s underling. My awe of the fellow was enhanced by the inappropriateness of my attire: the sharpest orange suit from Swinging London, in a town where style is a criminal offence. Rumsfeld: (after eying me up and down): How are you? Me: Uhhhh, ah, er, um. (Exit) My favourite tale of stardom stars my dad. All his life, he had been a fan of Benny Goodman, the ‘King of Swing’ and, in my dad’s opinion, the greatest clarinettist and bandleader in history. Dad incorporated Goodman’s style and timing into his own clarinet work, for which the music papers dubbed my pater ‘Britain’s leading reed man’. (My dad was a great man, but I lived with him. Sharing accommodations can reduce to zero the illusions a person has about another person; ask any wife.) One day, my father saw Benny Goodman walking down the street. Dad had been an acolyte for a good 30 years by then. He dashed after Goodman and caught him up. “Mr. Goodman,” he cried. Goodman stopped and turned. The supreme moment of my dad’s life was upon him. “You’re Benny Goodman,” my old man said. “I know,” said Goodman and walked away.

Charman Prize 2013 By Nicole Simons, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art
October will see the opening of the 6th annual Charman Prize at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. Established in 2008, the Charman Prize is an annual art prize competition for local artists based in Bermuda. The Sponsor and Patron of the Charman Prize, John Charman, is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd., a local businessman and art collector. “As always, it brings me great joy to sponsor the 6th Annual Charman Prize. The artistic talent on our Island is outstanding. It is vital in a community to provide an outlet for all artists of all abilities to exhibit their artwork.” The purpose of the Charman Prize is to exhibit artwork inspired by Bermuda and to honour and support artists in the creation of their artwork. Along with displaying the extraordinary range of artistic talent that exists within the community, the competition awards prizes to confer tangible recognition of excellence to the worthy recipients. The entries will be displayed in the Butterfield Family Gallery and offers Masterworks the opportunity to recognise the significant contribution that Bermuda’s contemporary artists contribute to the community. Since its inception, the Charman Prize has become a wellestablished highlight of the annual art calendar in Bermuda. John Charman says:
“Six years provides a substantial amount of time for our competition to flourish. Each year there are numerous improvements made. This year all of our artists have raised the collective standards of the competition. The artists should all take pride in their work. I believe this artwork has the potential to attract collectors from around the world, as it has done in the past.” Artwork in the 2013 Charman Prize competition will be judged by a panel of experts on four criteria points falling under the theme “Art in Bermuda; Bermuda in Art.” This years three judges are Ron Rizzi, Senior lecturer at School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Robert Cozzolino, Senior Curator and Curator of Modern Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Laszlo Cser, Art Restorer.
52 This Week in Bermuda | OCTOBER 2013
In The Arts The four judging criteria points are: Design and composition – fine use of the principles and elements of design and composition; use of material – technical mastery and skill in a chosen medium; distinctive and convincing style – a highly developed quality of creativity and originality; and source of inspiration – a clear intent and vision.
Monday-Saturday | 10:00am - 4:00pm Sunday 11:00am – 4:30pm museum is accessible with ramps and an elevator.

Another new twist will be the Masterworks Collection Prize. Members of the Collection Committee will choose and purchase a piece to be accessioned into the Bermudiana Collection. Four prizes of $2,500 will be awarded for artworks that are outstanding examples of each of the four criteria, and 12 honourable mention prizes of $100 will be awarded for notable artworks that embody strong elements of each of the four criteria. Previous grand-prize winners include; Kathy Harriot in 2008, Graham Foster in 2009, Sabrina Alexandria Powell in 2010, Andrew Stevenson in 2011 and Molly Godet in 2012. Their works now form part of the permanent Masterwork’s Bermudiana Collection. All works on display in the competition will be for sale. The Charman Prize will open on Friday, October 11th, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. The awards ceremony, by invitation only, commences at 6:30pm. In The Arts Molly Godet . 2012 Charman Prize Winner By candice dickinson
Molly was on holiday when the news went viral that she had won the 2012 Charman Prize. She had submitted a watercolour painting months before and had forgotten about it. The winning painting captured the brilliance of a tattered old palm tree painted by Molly while on location with the Plein Air Artists in Bermuda. The mysterious palm came to life with her careful strokes and creative mind and upon completion she titled it, Green Man Gombey.
The Charman Prize Each year local business man John Charman funds a creative exhibit inviting local artists to create works based on a theme with a grand prize of $10,000 awarded. In 2012 the theme was “Artwork inspired by Bermuda” and this years theme is “Art in Bermuda; Bermuda in Art.” Catch the opening night on Friday, October 11, 5:30pm – 7:30pm. The exhibit, held in the Butterfield Gallery at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art opens to the public on October 12th and the show will be on display until the end of December.
Molly Godet Molly had dreamed of being a ballet dancer but found her passions change drastically when she landed a job in the art department at Bermuda’s Island Press. She quickly became desperate to get off the island when she set her sights on furthering her education at art school. Off she went and spent four years doing graphic design in the UK. Back then Commonwealth citizens couldn’t stay in the UK after completing school without work, so Molly applied for a job at an advertising agency called J Walter Thompson and was lucky enough to land an interview. After a very late night out Molly decided to head straight to the 8:00am interview. She spent about an hour telling risqué jokes to what she later discovered were the entire board. Sometimes it pays to just be yourself. A few days later the agency called and offered her a job. She worked in advertising her whole professional career for JWT and other UK agencies. Molly was married and then remarried in England but always called Bermuda home.

In The Arts
Photo by Ariana C. Francis After taking early retirement, Molly returned to Bermuda and started painting. She only really paints when in Bermuda and is currently working on a sea study. Molly starts out with an idea and then allows the idea to develop as she works her way through the art piece, much the way that the palm started out as a decrepit old palm tree that caught her interest, however as she applied colour and various strokes, she watched it come to life and before she knew it, Green Man Gombey was staring back at her. Molly shows her work at the Windjammer II, located in the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel. Many of Molly’s artworks sell soon after completion so if you come across her work it may not be on display for long. She also shows at the Bermuda Art Centre in the Royal Naval Dockyard and has a show coming up in the spring at Masterworks featuring watercolours by herself, Chris Marson and Charles Knights. Molly also paints at least once a week with the Plien Air group when she is in Bermuda.

An unusual and colourful map of Bermuda showing the exciting activities happening on the island in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. There is a large hospital at Dockyard, a horse ferry at Watford bridge, a busy Admiralty Establishment in Pembroke, bustling steam ferry routes, the British army presence in St Georges, a rapidly growing city in Hamilton. PGA Grand Slam of Golf

with Kim Swan, J.P. Teaching Professional
It is October and with it comes the marque sports marketing event on the Bermuda calendar - PGA Grand Slam of Golf. The people of Bermuda and our golf community welcome the PGA of America and their PGA Grand Slam of Golf which again will be featured at Port Royal Golf Course, which is amongst the greatest public golf courses in the world. We at Port Royal are excited to play host to golfing greats Jason Dufner, Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose and Adam Scott, as their participation offers huge credibility to the global exposure of our golf product. Dating back to 1950s when Bermuda was a pioneer in televised golf, the PGA Grand Slam at Port Royal G.C. is a fitting tribute to the vision of our golfing forefathers in Bermuda. As a past President of the Bermuda PGA, I am eternally grateful to the PGA of America for once again bringing this prestigious event to our shores. Truth be told, we in Bermuda owe a debt of gratitude to PGA Club Professionals from North America who have graced our shores for the past 70 years, bringing with them their members from their respective clubs on the eastern seaboard in particular. Many golf professionals from North America have become household names in Bermuda - especially Joe Carr from the New England PGA Section who has been regular visitor since 1971. The friendships made over the years have made selling Bermuda easier, as the positive word of mouth endorsement has been a tremendous marketing tool for decades. The presence of the PGA Grand Slam has not only helped to make Bermuda a household name for golfers in North America but also many locations globally. As the tournament approaches, we encourage golf enthusiast from overseas and locally to plan to join us at Port Royal Golf Course on October 14 - 16, 2013, to experience great golf in an intimate atmosphere on one of the world’s greatest public golf courses. kimswangolf@gmail.com 58 This Week in Bermuda | OCTOBER 2013

Heritage Matters
Three men of the Bermuda Dockyard standing by a 64-pounder RML at the Keep, about 1880.
Manning The Guns Of The Keep By Dr. Edward Harris, MBE JP
Most of the fortifications of the Bermuda Dockyard have survived relatively intact, though the “Keep”, or place of last defence in medieval terminology, has been altered with two later periods of emplacing new cannon and guns, which took place in the 1870s and 1890s. In the 1870s, the new guns were of two of the ‘Rifled Muzzle Loader’, from the smallest 64-pounder to the 18-ton monsters that fired a 10-inch calibre shell weighing upwards of 400 pounds. Five of the big guns were constructed at Bastions ‘B’ to ‘D’ and ‘F’ and ‘G’ while seven of the 64-pounders were spread about the ramparts of the Keep (now part of the National Museum). The smaller gun existed in two varieties, the one looking like the 18-ton piece, while the other was the latest form of a 32-pounder smoothbore cannon, bored out to accept a rifled sleeve for the 64-pound shell. A recently-found photograph now tells us that the smaller guns at the Keep of the latter type. Thus the seven Keep guns, like the one in the circa 1880 photograph, shown here were mounted on wooden Garrison Standing Siege Carriages, as identified by our friend of old, Austin Collin “Guns” Carpenter. In addition to adding to the knowledge of the fortifications and weapons of the Keep in the 1880s, the photograph is of great interest as it shows three military men of various rates, as depicted by their uniforms, the officer of course stand astride the gun in his ‘whites’. This is the only known photograph of close detail of a gun at the Dockyard in the nineteenth century and the only one, bar one from Fort Victoria, for all of the fortifications of that period in Bermuda to show the men presumably responsible for the manning of the weapons standing by their charges, so to fire verbally.

Heritage Matters Bermuda in a World Heritage Universe By Dr. Edward Harris, MBE JP Seen from Fort George, the whitewashed limestone roofs of the World Heritage St. George’s evoke a view little changed for a considerable time (Richard Lowry photo).
A little over a generation ago, the 1972 World Heritage Convention paved a new highway of nature conservation and cultural properties preservation that was destined to elevate some of Bermuda’s cultural assets to the level of one of but 981 ‘World Heritage Sites’ in 160 ‘State Parties’ lands around the earth. It was those assets and others that Dr. Christopher Young, Head of International Advice at English Heritage, recently came to Bermuda to view, for it had been some years since such an official from the United Kingdom (our State Party) had set eyes on our buildings and monuments. The World Heritage Convention ‘defines the kind of natural or cultural sites which can be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List. By signing the Convention, each country pledges to conserve not only the World Heritage sites situated on its territory, but also to protect its national heritage. The States Parties are encouraged to integrate the protection of the cultural and natural heritage into regional planning programmes, set up staff and services at their sites, undertake scientific and technical conservation research and adopt measures which give this heritage a function in the day-to-day life of the community.’
Perhaps the most iconic of Bermuda’s World Heritage, Fort St. Catherine was established in the first year of settlement (1612–13), but was rebuilt six times thereafter (Andrew Pettit photo).

Heritage Matters
The spiritual and physical centre of St. George’s is the World Heritage church of St. Peter’s, renamed in part recently as ‘Their Majesties Chappell’, after a late 1600s warrant of the King of England.
‘Today, the World Heritage concept is so well understood that sites on the List are a magnet for international cooperation and may thus receive financial assistance for heritage conservation projects from a variety of sources. Finally, the inscription of a site on the World Heritage List brings an increase in public awareness of the site and of its outstanding values, thus also increasing the tourist activities at the site. When these are well planned for and organized respecting sustainable tourism principles, they can bring important funds to the site and to the local economy.’ In the year 2000, Bermuda was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO as ‘The Town of St George, founded in 1612, is an outstanding example of the earliest English urban settlement in the New World. Its associated fortifications graphically illustrate the development of English military engineering from the 17th to the 20th century, being adapted to take account of the development of artillery over this period.’ Now is not the time to labour over with the details of all that wonderful heritage which lies north and east of Castle Harbour, from the divine (architecturally speaking) St. Peter’s, to the fortifications, to the wonderful homes of the Town, but to say that we in Bermuda have been accorded a privilege given but to a few. It is an honour that comes with great responsibilities, the achievement of which cannot but rebound to the good of the whole country, for our best friends and repeat visitors are those who love us for our heritage, for what makes Bermuda, Bermuda. We hope that Dr. Young returned to the ‘State Party’ not only impressed with the monuments themselves but with the commitment that all who love and reside in this place have in preserving that heritage, not only for Bermuda, but all other peoples as well, for part of this place is now officially designated as an asset in the ‘World Heritage’ universe.
Andrew Pettit, Dr. Young, Ed Harris and Larry Williams discuss the recent restoration work at Fort St. Catherine (Richard Lowry photo).

Do You Know... … About James Henry Thies, Percy V. Turner and Bermuda’s Pillar Boxes? By Horst Augustinovic
Nephew of James Taylor, Deputy Postmaster General of Bermuda from 1818 to 1853, James Henry Thies worked with his uncle at the St. George’s Post Office and, in 1860 was appointed Postmaster General of Bermuda. Even before becoming Postmaster General, James Thies was already producing his own ‘Postmaster Stamps’ in St. George’s, as did William Perot in Hamilton. Only four examples are known to exist. When regular postage stamps were introduced in 1865, James Thies did not like the idea at all and complained about the complicated accounts he had to submit to both the local Government and the GPO in London. While he was able to satisfy the colonial auditors for the next 12 years, he was out of his depth and failed to keep accurate James Henry Thies – Mayor of St. George’s records of stocks, with the result that stamps had to be overprinted in 1874 and 1875. He and Postmaster General of Bermuda also failed to request 2-1/2 penny stamps when the letter rate to the United States was increased, with Bermuda consequently losing ½ penny on every letter sent to the U.S. By 1877 it was clear that the Post Office needed an overhaul and Bermuda’s Governor asked for help from the G.P.O. in London. Percy V. Turner, a postal inspector, arrived in 1878 to help reorganize the Bermuda Postal System and assist in the preparation of a new Post Office Act after Bermuda became a member of the Universal Postal Union in the previous year. After an investigation, James Thies was suspended from office and Percy Turner took over as Acting Postmaster General. Meanwhile James Thies was brought to trial in June 1879, but because of his popularity, the jury ‘was unable to reach a verdict’. When additional charges were brought against him in October, he was found ‘guilty of neglect of duty’ and forfeited his bond. In 1880 he resigned as Mayor of St. George’s and moved to New York. Before returning to London in July 1879, Percy Turner had completely reorganized the Bermuda postal system. The use of Pillar Letter Boxes in Bermuda was proposed by Percy Turner as part of his strategy to improve postal services and in 1880 the Colonial Postmaster, Mr. Aubrey G. Butterfield, obtained ‘with considerable difficulty sufficient funds through the Legislature to purchase twelve pillar letter boxes’. In July 1882 the first three of the pillar letter boxes were installed at Wellington, St. George’s; near the Ferry Road Receiving Office; and at Clarence Hill near Admiralty House in Pembroke West. While the original pillar letter boxes had no markings of any kind, others show the Royal Cipher of King George V (1910 to 1936); King George VI (1936 to 1952) and Queen Elizabeth II (1952 to the present). 64 This Week in Bermuda | OCTOBER 2013
Do You Know
The design of the pillar letter boxes installed during the course of a century is essentially the same, with the slot in the upper part, and the entire front opening when unlocked by the postman. With larger envelopes being mailed in more recent times, the letter slot was widened on the Elizabethan pillar boxes. In some cases there did not seem to be enough room for free-standing pillar boxes and letter boxes were set into a wall instead. These can be found with the Royal Cipher of King George V, George VI as well as Queen Elizabeth II. Today there are 46 letter boxes along the main roads of Bermuda. Of these 21 are pillar letter boxes and 25 are wall-mounted letter boxes.
Two Victorian Pillar Boxes that were moved from the road into a wall on Pitts Bay Road and onto a wall on St. John’s Road; a Pillar Box from the reign of King George V at the Crow Lane bus stop and a Pillar Box from the reign of King George VI on the top of Queen Street.
A Pillar Box from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II across from White Hill Field in Southampton and Letter Boxes from the reign of King George V on Chapel of Ease Road in St. David’s; King George VI at Fort Scaur, and Queen Elizabeth II on Middle Road in Warwick. Comments netlink@link.bm

The Chef’s Table with Antonio Belvedere, Head Chef, Bermuda Bistro at the Beach Story & photography by ariana C. francis
At a glance, one would assume that Bermuda Bistro at the Beach is just another fried food and burger joint. Known simply as “The Beach” to locals who gather to hear tunes spun by local entertainers, DJ Choice, YGS and Magnum Force, this hot spot’s savory menu is often overlooked. In fact, if you ask around town for places that serve the freshest catches of the day, chances are they will direct you to the corner of Front and Parliament Streets in the heart of Hamilton and you will find yourself standing on the door step of “The Beach”. After sampling a delicious plated Tuna Sashimi prepared by Head Chef Antonio Belvedere, we can see why this restaurant is considered to be the ideal destination for gourmet dishes including lobster! Open morning, noon and night, The Beach offers the best drink specials in town, a tenhour long happy hour, an incredible selection of delicious food, a full bar and plenty of flat screen TVs to keep sports hungry fans entertained for hours.
Meet Chef Toto Antonio Belvedere, known to many as Chef Toto, did not dream of spending his days and nights in a kitchen. His intent on studying Business Administration at Bermuda College left him yearning for a more “hands-on” occupation, which led him to the culinary program at the college. This local Italian-Bermudian chef started from the bottom as a sous chef shortly after graduating May, 2012. Today he is the head chef at The Beach, cooking up mouth-watering dishes like the Governor’s Salad, an 8 oz grilled strip steak layered with blue cheese on a crisp house salad, or one of the signature bistro entrées, Basil’s Famous Chicken Curry boasting the best curry on Front Street and served with basmati rice and a papadum. 68 This Week in Bermuda | OCTOBER 2013
It’s All Happening
The seared pepper crusted Tuna Sashami, with a small salad, pink pickled ginger and wasabi is an excellent appetizer choice for seafood lovers.
“It’s the best lobster for the best price in town,” ensures Chef Toto. When Chef Toto isn’t in the kitchen or sharpening his knives, he is all about family and never misses an opportunity to spend time with those closest to him. When he heads out for a great meal cooked for him rather than by him, Chef Toto likes to head up to Dockyard to see friend and inspiration Livio Ferigo at Bonefish Bar and Grill where he is not only owner but the head Chef as well.
A LOBSTER TALE
Lobster season is upon us and according to Chef Toto, The Beach sold more lobsters in the first month of the 2012 lobster season than the entire season before in 2011. No doubt, due to his kitchen skills. Chef Toto prepares local lobsters three different ways. Thermidor Lobster Inspired by the French, Thermidor basically means that all of the meat is removed combined with a creamy mixture of egg yolks, and cognac or brandy then stuffed back into a lobster shell. Pairing: Excellent with a pint of Stella Artois!!
Broiled Lobster The lobster shells are cut lengthwise and the meat is seasoned with butter, paprika, salt and pepper, and then broiled.

Pairing: Great with an ice cold Hoegaarden!! Continued on page 68 Hoegaarden

The Chef’s Table continued Curried Lobster The lobster is boiled, then the meat is removed and cut into chunks. It is then curried and served over rice.
Pairing: Dundee IPA is the perfect pairing for curried lobster!!
Complementing Sides Each dish is served with a selection of macaroni and cheese, French fries, rice, baked potato, mashed potato, Cesar salad, mixed greens or a vegetable medley. With many head chefs bringing their talents to Bermuda from foreign waters, Chef Toto is proud to say that he is born and bred right here in Bermuda and he Dundee IPA can’t wait to cook for you. Directions: 1. Bring 3 quarts of water to boil with the quartered onion, carrot and bay leaf. Plunge the empty lobster shell into boiling water, cooking for 10 minutes. Keep the cooking liquid warm on the stove. 2. Using a sharp pointed knife, cut the lobster in half, lengthwise from head to tail, discarding the soft matter and cord from the head portion. If a black vein is visible in the center of the tail, remove with a knife and discard. Gently remove the lobster meat from its tail. Chop the meat into 1-in. pieces. Set aside. 3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil, chopped onion and garlic over medium heat until softened but not browned, approximately 8 to 10 minutes. 4. Add the rice, stirring constantly and cooking until opaque, for approximately 2 minutes. 5. Add the white wine, let it evaporate, and then add the saffron. Ladle in the lobster’s cooking liquid until the rice is covered. 6. Turn the heat to high, stirring constantly for an additional 8 minutes. Add the lobster meat chunks and continue to cook for approximately 15 minutes, ensure to maintain the liquid level just above the rice. 7. Continue cooking until the rice is soft but still al dente. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. 8. Remove from heat and stir in the butter, extra-virgin olive oil and parsley. 9. Remove the cooked lobster shell from the water, drying it with a paper towel. Place the shell on a deep plate and ladle the risotto on top, leaving some of the shell exposed for garnish. If desired, drizzle with a little balsamic reduction and add curly parsley for garnish, and serve. Serves 2
