Tips To Improve Your Handwriting

A great pen can also help improve your handwriting. Pens exist in so many shapes, sizes, weights, and materials. Here are a few things to consider when looking for a pen to best suit your writing preferences.

The grip - consider the girth, shape, and material. Would a metal grip be too slippery? Would a narrow grip cause your hand to cramp?

The comfort in hand - account for the pen’s overall weight, size, and balance as you hold it. Does it feel comfortable enough to write several consecutive pages without tiring your hand?

The tip - the point (in ballpoints & rollerballs) or nib (in fountain pens) can make a big difference in terms of the amount of pressure you need to put on the paper. If you write small and slow, you should probably opt for a fine or extra fine. If you have large handwriting, then a medium or broad point is more your speed.

Besides giving pen enthusiasts an excuse to enjoy their pens more often, improving your handwriting can benefit the clarity of your communication and impress others, reflecting positively on your personality.

Improving your handwriting doesn’t require the purchase of an expensive pen. But, it doesn’t hurt, either. Working with the supplies you have, here are some tips you can apply right now to have neater penmanship.

S-L-O-W down. I know we’re all in a big hurry these days. Writing by hand forces us to slow down and focus on moving the pen around the page. Before we put pen to paper, it would be helpful to find a handwriting practice sheet or exemplar for your desired writing style. You can find printable sheets online, take out a calligraphy book from the library, or purchase a practice book.

Fountain pens offer the widest array of nib options to best suit your writing style. Outside of the monoline EF, F, M, B, etc., a stub, italic, or flex nib adds calligraphic flair with line variation. Plus, you can change the look of your writing entirely by using a colorful fountain pen ink that shades, sheens, or shimmers.

The practice sheets have ruled guidelines to build consistency in your letterforms. You’ll want to keep your letters anchored on the baseline with the ascenders (lines in the letters b,d,f, etc.) rising to the same height and descenders (letters like q,p,j, etc.) dropping to the same depth. Also important is keeping the consistent spacing between letters and being mindful of the slant.

Once you have the basics down, it’s time to practice. Frequent practice develops hand/eye coordination and muscle memory. To promote the habit of handwriting practice, here are a few ideas to make it fun and productive. At work, you can opt to take meeting notes by hand, brainstorm with pen and paper, and write memos to colleagues to show off your new skills. If you love to read (and most writers do), copy passages from a book you are reading. Use prompts to jumpstart writing daily in your journal. Write snail mail letters to a pen pal.

Goldspot Pens can personalize most pens and journals from our selection with initials, name, business logo or personalized message. We encounter a number of creative requests on a daily basis, most of which we can oblige easily. If you’re looking for a proper personalized pen, there are a few tips we can offer to help guide you in your selection.

Happen to have a long name? Go for initials! On most pens, we can engrave an average of 15-20 characters (including spaces) on the pen. A monogram (three initials for the first, middle and last name) would be more appropriate for longer names.

Pick a font style that suits the person / pen : If the item has a modern look like a Lamy, go with a sans-serif font like “Block.” For a more classical pen like an Aurora Ipsilon, a serif font like “Times” would be more appropriate. See font style samples below.

To Period or Not to Period : From our 15+ years of experience with personalizing gifts, we have seen both ways where our customers request a period after initials, but they are usually omitted by 70% of our customers.

The Phrase that Pays: We’ve done a large number of small phrases and messages on pens, and they are exceptionally effective at conveying a sincere, intimate message to the recipient. Try to keep the phrase under 20 characters. If it is over, and our website is not accepting the limit of characters, please do include the message in the “Special Instructions” section of our order form. Sometimes, we can accommodate a larger message in two lines or by including an engraved plate with the pen box.

Try Dating: If you’re celebrating a significant milestone like a wedding, graduation or retirement, personalizing the item with the date of the event would be a great idea.
