DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK An Esterbrook State of the Union

As many pen enthusiasts and die-hard Esterbrook fans know, Ryan and the team at Kenro weren’t the first to attempt resurrecting the brand. Back in 2014, Harpen Brand Holdings, LLC acquired the rights to Esterbrook, reintroducing a modern version of the ‘‘J’’ model that was not well-received by the pen community. So, what’s different this time? Ryan takes us behind the scenes with deep insights as to the current state of Esterbrook pens. ‘‘It comes back to our focus on the writing community,’’ Ryan says.

Collaboration, particularly ‘‘promoting small makers and innovating,’’ is at the heart of Kenro’s approach to rebuilding Esterbrook. Take the 2021 Estie ‘‘Gold Rush’’ limited edition launch, for example. Kenro worked with McKenzie Penworks to produce exclusive Diamondcast resin made in the USA. Then, they commissioned custom ground nibs from specialists Gena Salorino of Custom Nib Studio and Joshua J Lax of the JJ Lax Pen Company. On the launch day, Kenro marketed with a global network of retailers and social media influencers to spread the word about the launch.

Most importantly, influencers want to spread the word because they truly love these modern Esterbrook pens. From the start, Kenro desired to win over pen enthusiasts with a ‘‘writing quality that helps us keep the [Esterbrook] spirit alive.’’ According to Ryan, the introduction of the MV nib adapter was a major milestone, allowing Esterbrook collectors to use vintage Esterbrook nibs on the modern Estie fountain pen.

However, it hasn’t been all ‘‘buttery’’ smooth sailing these past 3 years.

Ryan and the Kenro team were faced with a big learning curve in manufacturing pens from scratch. The challenge to introduce something new that would be enjoyed by the pen community puts additional pressure on every design decision. ‘‘When you see a pen come out from us, just know that there were 15 that didn’t make the cut,’’ as Ryan says - lots of blood, sweat, and ink go into the production of each pen design.

To execute their shared vision of Esterbrook, the small, tight-knit team at Kenro leans on decades of combined experience in the pen industry. Like Ryan, everyone in the Kenro office wears many hats and is actively part of writing the new chapter of Esterbrook. The way an author feels about someone reading their book, Ryan feels about someone writing with an Estie, ‘‘to watch your ideas become reality is the most rewarding! And then watching people love your creations.’’

As you scroll your feed, check notifications, and tap e-mails from the palm of your hand, it’s hard to imagine that, only 163 years ago, the only way to send a message to someone was to dip a nib in ink and write it on a piece of paper. That’s when Richard Esterbrook founded America’s largest pen manufacturer in Camden, New Jersey. The Esterbrook Pen Company was a global juggernaut that competed against other world-class pen brands like Sheaffer, Waterman, Parker, and Conklin. After struggling to stay relevant in the age of communication innovation, Esterbrook went out of business in the latter half of the 20th Century.

Following their successful collections in the Estie, JR, Camden, Nook pen cases, and MV nib adapters, Ryan says Esterbrook will continue to push the boundaries in the next 12 months, ‘‘I think you’ll see a lot of innovation from us, unlike any other brand. I think it will be tough to compare us to anyone in particular because we draw inspiration from so many places.

From fashion to writing and everything in between.’’ While he couldn’t be specific (it’s all top secret), we are excited to see what new products they will dream up that will better serve the writing community.

Left behind was a legacy of American industry. Esterbrook built a reputation for high-quality, affordable writing instruments with a wide variety of durable nibs. Thankfully, they weren’t dead yet. Like Captain America, the brand was thawed out after almost 50 years of being on ice. In 2018, Esterbrook was given new life by the capable hands of Kenro Industries.

Based in Mineola, Long Island - only 120 miles north of Esterbrook’s original home, Kenro applied decades of experience distributing for global pen brands like Aurora, Montegrappa, OMAS, Sheaffer, and Otto Hutt, to resurrect this beloved American brand. The Kenro team consists of pen industry veterans who have been to more pen shows than they can count.

If you’ve attended one of these pen shows, chances are, you may have met Ryan ‘‘the Weird Beard’’ Sirignano. Don’t let the dad bod fool you, he competed in five Ironman triathlons before giving up the bike for a crossover SUV with car seats. Although he’s Kenro’s national sales manager, Ryan isn’t above working the table at a pen show, packing orders, or answering interview questions about Esterbrook.

MEET PETER DRAWS

THE MAN BEHIND THE PEN

5 seconds into watching a Peter Draws video, you begin to feel like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole.

In the foreground, a table is enclosed by an intricate network of cables, tripods, cameras, lighting, and video monitors. All the electronics appear to be in the process of scaling the metal structure, gaining a better view of the art about to happen.

And, here’s this young man with tousled light brown hair, wearing clear, thick, oval-rimmed glasses, and large hoop earrings. He doesn’t look anything like Bob Ross. Yet, he certainly emits the same vibe with his deep, soft-spoken voice - inviting you to join him in his artistic process.

Nearly 1 million subscribers follow Peter’s videos on YouTube. Yet, he’s not the type of person you would associate as a “YouTuber.” He humbly describes his occupation as: “I draw and make videos of my drawings, I record them and speed them up, sometimes with a little commentary and I do things like pen reviews, stuff like that.” Although he makes a living from his art, he’s reluctant to call himself an artist, “it felt so blatant and presumptuous. Plus there are a lot of weird connotations that go along with the words ‘art’ and ‘artist’ which I was wary of, but I think I was being too hesitant. I encourage anyone to call themselves an artist if they create things. Or at all, for any reason.”

This sense of encouragement and openness “draws” people to Peter’s channel. What Bob Ross did for oil painting, Julia Child did for French cuisine, and Bob Vila did for home improvement, Peter does for drawing. Aspiring artists relate to his childlike sense of curiosity and the simple joy of drawing lines on paper.

Peter’s love for putting pen to paper is evident in every video.

“It’s a kind of art therapy for myself,” he says. He fills himself with inspiration from all directions, stating that “just being alive and awake provides more inspiration than I could ever hope to exhaust.” While that might be enough for most artists, Peter also loves engaging with the online community and interacting through his artwork.

“It’s also satisfying to put a drawing or video online and come back later to read all the comments. There’s something wonderful about that and I wish more artists could have that feeling, the public feedback, and interaction with your art.”

Peter got into reviewing pens simply by answering questions from viewers. People would often comment on his timelapse drawing videos, asking what pen he was using. After years of posting replies, he realized, “there are a lot of people out there who, just like me, care a lot about pens, and are always on the lookout for a good one, a fun or different one, or something they’ve never seen before.” So, he indulged the audience by getting more in-depth about his tools.

While Peter uses a variety of tools to create his illustrations, he shows preference toward fountain pens for their variety.

Aside from the seemingly endless number of shapes, sizes, materials, and colors of the pens themselves, there’s a wide range of nib sizes. He says, “Sometimes all it takes is a change of nibs for me to stumble upon something wonderful and rewarding I may never have found otherwise.”

In 2020, we approached Peter about making something wonderful in an exclusive fountain pen that would bear his name. Since he has a fondness for demonstrator pens, the first edition of the “Peter Pen” featured transparent acrylic with a smoky black whirl that looked like ink dropped in water. We collaborated with Narwhal Pens to bring Peter’s vision to life.

And, in early 2021, the first edition of the Peter Pen quickly sold out.

Since there were so many fans and pen enthusiasts still looking for the Peter Pen, we opted for a second, “Signature” limited edition that received a finishing touch from Peter.

Besides being engraved with the serial number on the metal cap finial, each pen included a ‘thank you’ card hand-signed

by Peter. “It took me four or five hours with a break for spaghetti,” he says, impressed that his signature did not devolve into an inky blob by the last card.

Now that Peter’s pens are being used around the world, he thinks “it’s so cool that all of those pens are out there, in people’s hands (or on their desks, in their drawers, etc.) and I’m daydreaming about all the cool stuff they’re writing and drawing. I hope it’s ok if I consider all the drawings done with the Peter Pen as descendants of mine, my ‘grand-drawings.’”

By the time you are reading this, it might be possible that the second Peter Pen “Signature” edition has sold out. However, we might expand the Peter Draws family tree with another pen sibling in the near future. The Opus 88 Jazz fountain pen has a classic design which is available in a variety of colors. The material of the body has been uniquely crafted and is slightly slimmer compared to the popular Opus 88 Omar edition. Equipped with eyedropper filling system and center bar to regulate the ink flow.

Traditionally this is only available on high end eyedropper fountain pens. The semi-translucent resin portion of the pen allows you to see both your current ink level and your nib while capped. The Opus 88 Jazz features black details and a stainless steel #6 JoWo nib. The pen can be filled with the included eyedropper.

The Opus 88 Omar fountain pen is a large eyedropper-filled pen with a piston operated shut-off valve. The colored barrel of this pen is translucent, allowing you to see your ink level.

The cap design permits a multi-layered view inside the design.

The pen features a solid color resin finial and piston knob, a silver clip, and a silver stainless steel #6 nib. It also comes with a glass eyedropper to fill the pen with your favorite ink. An ebonite piston and rubber gasket seals the feed off from the barrel when fully depressed, reducing the risk of leakage and burping. By unscrewing the blind cap and loosening the rod at the rear of the barrel, you open up the ink flow to the feed.

During long writing sessions, leave the shut-off valve open to take advantage of the impressive ink capacity.

Try to keep the phrase under 20 characters. Sometimes, we can accommodate a larger message in two lines or by including an engraved plate with the pen box.

Goldspot Pens can personalize most pens and journals from our selection with initials, name, business logo or personalized message.

We encounter a number of creative requests on a daily basis, most of which we can oblige easily. If you’re looking for a proper personalized pen, there are a few tips we can offer to help guide you in your selection.

Happen to have a long name? Go for initials! On most pens, we can engrave an average of 15-20 characters (including spaces) on the pen. A monogram (three initials for the first, middle and last name) would be more appropriate for longer names.

Pick a font style that suits the person / pen : If the item has a modern look like a Lamy, go with a sans-serif font like “Block.”

For a more classical pen like an Aurora Ipsilon, a serif font like “Times” would be more appropriate. See font style samples below.

Try Dating: If you’re celebrating a significant milestone like a wedding, graduation or retirement, personalizing the item with the date of the event would be a great idea.

Our engraver will typically select the font style that would best suit the pen, but if you have a specific request, please indicate your font style preference using the below styles for reference.
