OPUS 88 OMAR The Opus 88 Omar fountain pen is a large eyedropper-filled pen with a piston operated shut-off valve.

The colored barrel of this pen is translucent, allowing you to see your ink level. The cap design permits a multi-layered view inside the design. The pen features an solid color resin finial and piston knob, a silver clip, and a silver stainless steel #6 nib. It also comes with a glass eyedropper to fill the pen with your favorite ink.

An ebonite piston and rubber gasket seals the feed off from the barrel when fully depressed, reducing the risk of leakage and burping. By unscrewing the blind cap and loosening the rod at the rear of the barrel, you open up the ink flow to the feed. HOW TO CLEAN YOUR PENS Considering we live in a time of a global pandemic, it’s crucial now more than ever to keep your fountain pens clean. Wait! Before you reach for the hand sanitizer - I’m not just talking about viruses and bacteria. If you want to keep your pens writing smoothly for the long-term, you need to clean them regularly. Thankfully, proper pen hygiene isn’t as difficult or time-consuming as it sounds; nor does it require any special tools.

Unlike disposable pens, fountain pens are built for years of use, if not a lifetime. You wouldn’t dare throw away a Sailor 1911 fountain pen after crossing off a shopping list, would you? Please, don’t! I’ll explain how you can safely sanitize your pens and keep them writing long after the coronavirus fades into memory.

A disclaimer before you read on: Goldspot Pens is a stationery retailer, not a doctor or infectious disease specialist. Stay up to date on public health guidelines by referring to the CDC guidelines on (cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/).

Not all pens are created equal, so they can’t all be cleaned the same way. Pens are crafted from a variety of materials like ebonite, acrylic, stainless steel, wood, cellulose acetate, and celluloid, to name a few. Although most modern pens use the cartridge/converter filling system, we also need to consider other filling mechanisms like piston-filler, vacuum, eyedropper, and so on.

For guidance on sanitizing particular pen materials, I asked pen manufacturer and small business owner, Pierre Miller, to weigh in on the discussion of disinfecting pens. Pierre hand turns fountain pens and has an expansive knowledge based on his years of experience working with virtually every material you can make into a pen. TL;DR the best general solution is the same the CDC recommends for keeping your hands clean - wash your pens with soap and water.

Let’s say you just came home and you want to clean the trusty pen that served you so well throughout the day. Apply soap and water on the outside of your pen using a soft towel. Sing the “Happy Birthday” song, “Baby Shark”, do what you have to. Then, rinse off the pen and quickly wipe it dry with a clean towel or a microfiber cloth like this one from Connoisseurs.

Keep your pens safe from contact with infected droplets and airborne particles by storing them in a pen case when not in use. Most importantly, and many pen aficionadoes will love this rule, don’t let anyone borrow your pens.

Now that you’ve cleaned the exterior of your pen, let’s keep it running smoothly by cleaning out the inside. When do you need to clean a fountain pen? Even if you use the same ink color, you should clean it at least twice a year to ensure optimal performance. If you love switching colors, you will need to clean it before inking up with a new color. If you’re not planning on writing for a while, you need to clean it before it goes into storage.

If the pen was sitting inked for some time in a drawer - hey, we’re not all perfect - then you may find that a rinse won’t be enough to get rid of all the ink residue. A soak in some pen flush like Monteverde brand flush will help clear up stubborn ink clogs. For that super-thorough clean, you could throw the nib unit in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for a few minutes.

If you’re looking for a proper personalized pen, there are a few tips we can offer to help guide you in your selection.

The Phrase that Pays: We’ve done a large number of small phrases and messages on pens, and they are exceptionally effective at conveying a sincere, intimate message to the recipient. Try to keep the phrase under 20 characters. If it is over, and our website is not accepting the limit of characters, please do include the message in the “Special Instructions” section of our order form. Sometimes, we can accommodate a larger message in two lines or by including an engraved plate with the pen box.

Try Dating: If you’re celebrating a significant milestone like a wedding, graduation or retirement, personalizing the item with the date of the event would be a great idea.

Long name? Go for Initials : On most pens, we can engrave an average of 15-20 characters (including spaces) on the pen.

A monogram (three initials for the first, middle and last name) would be more appropriate for longer names.

Pick a font style that suits the person / pen : If the item has a modern look like a Lamy, go with a sans-serif font like “Block.”

For a more classical pen like an Aurora Ipsilon, a serif font like “Times” would be more appropriate. See font style samples below.

To Period or Not to Period : From our 15+ years of experience with personalizing gifts, we have seen both ways where our customers request a period after initials, but they are usually omitted by 70% of our customers.
