Invest in Promising

FUTURES Like Delaina’s!

Student Delaina Ferrell, second from right, is pictured here with three faculty members who have inspired and guided her: professors Wally Alexander, Kelly Mechling, and Richard Biffle.

When Delaina Ferrell ’23 toured college campuses as a high school student, she could see herself attending Thomas College. “I knew I could make a life for myself here,” Delaina recalls. “I could make friends. I could be part of something larger than myself. I loved the professors I met and felt excited to begin my education and career.” Delaina knew that attending Thomas would take determination – and that she would have to pave her own financial path. “It hasn’t been easy to get this far, mostly due to finances. I am unable to acquire student loans in my name because I have no one in my life to cosign them. I have worked full time, as well as a significant amount of overtime, to pay for my education, my vehicle, and other expenses. Even with budgeting and planning, I faced a setback this

fall and was struggling to pay tuition and register for spring classes. But I did not want my lack of resources to interrupt my education.” Fortunately, the Student Success Grant program was available to help bridge the gap with an emergency scholarship. When committed students like Delaina face unexpected hurdles, support systems like this are critical – so that crises are manageable and Thomas degrees remain within reach. “Thank you,” says Delaina to Thomas College’s donors. “You are helping me continue my dream and pursue my passion so that I can become a high school English teacher. There are not enough words in the dictionary to describe what your gift means to me.” Contributions to the Thomas Fund help Delaina and others by providing scholarships, academic support programs, professional and career development opportunities, athletic experiences, and much more.

Please give today. Your gift can be the difference in keeping students like Delaina on track. Visit thomas.edu/give or send a check payable to Thomas College in the postage-paid, enclosed envelope. Delaina and her classmates thank you!

I

T IS A VERY EXCITING TIME AT THOMAS COLLEGE , and I am both pleased

and proud to share this combined magazine and annual report with you. This fall semester has been rejuvenating, with faculty, staff, and students back on campus. Having everyone together again, in person, is possible thanks to the campus community getting vaccinated. We continue to place health and safety as our top priority, and we are enjoying a more open, vibrant campus experience this year as a result – from the classroom to the dining center to the turf fields and everywhere in between. Thank you to everyone who has done their part. Thomas continues to thrive in the face of difficult times. While we see similar challenges as many other peer institutions as we emerge from the pandemic, we are positioned for growth thanks to our incredible students, alumni, families, faculty and staff, and friends – many of whom have invested generously in the Thomas mission and, ultimately, our students. The confidence our donors have placed in Thomas means that we are able to award more scholarship aid; invest in students’ success through retention and graduation initiatives; reinvigorate our Guaranteed Job Program to provide our students with an unparalleled career development experience and better meet employers’ needs; and grow our campus. This growth mindset keeps me positive, and the energy of what is possible at Thomas is palpable whenever we welcome folks to this gorgeous, warm, and friendly place. From our Admissions open houses to Homecoming and Family Weekend, our family is growing and welcoming. I hope you will continue to play an active part in that family – and open the door to others. DOOR OPENERS

Thomas College Creates Opportunities

SAMUEL FALLA ’22 Business Administration major Samuel Falla never imagined he would intern for a skydiving company while attending Thomas College. At Vacationland Skydiving, based in Waterville, ME, Samuel spent this summer and fall learning the company ropes, including operations, financials, logistics, and customer service. “What I enjoyed most was helping hundreds of people achieve their bucket list goal of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane,” says Sam. Sam worked for Thomas College alumnus Brad Fisher ’02, owner of Vacationland Skydiving. “Working for a Thomas graduate was an eye-opening experience,” Sam adds. “Brad understood how my courses could best match my work.” Sam has worked hard to achieve his dreams. He is a Kiest-Morgan Scholar, pursuing his bachelor’s degree in an accelerated three years; honor student; and first-generation college-goer. Plus, he plans to graduate debt-free, having worked two part-time jobs throughout his time at Thomas. “Implementing what I’ve learned in the classroom at Thomas into a real-world experience has been a highlight of my internship,” he notes, “and will greatly benefit me in the long run.”

BRADLEY GRIFFIN ’18 Bradley Griffin is a Senior Cloud Engineer with Change Healthcare, where he works on the latest, most-innovative technology in his field. When Bradley was asked how Thomas has opened doors 6  THOMAS MAGAZINE  FALL 2021 & ANNUAL REPORT

for him, he replied, “I used the Thomas College Guaranteed Job Placement program, and other career services, for interview preparations; career fairs to identify jobs and internships; and attended the technology summits that were held when I was there. Also, Professor Jonathan Grady helped prepare me the most for what I’m currently doing. His classes really helped me to build a great foundation for coding. And all the IT professors I had were integral in preparing me.”

CAITLIN LABBE ’21 Business Administration major Caitlin Labbe conducted her summer internship with GHM Insurance Agency in downtown Waterville. “I really got to know what working in a business is like,” Caitlin reflects. “Thomas does a great job of preparing us for life after college, but you don’t know what sitting in an office is like until you actually do it. I am very grateful for this opportunity and everything I learned.” Caitlin says she felt prepared for the role thanks to her professors, as well as the Professional and Career Development team, who helped her build a strong resume and cover letter, plus try mock interviews that helped her prepare for the real deal. Martha Wentworth, Personal Lines Manager at GHM Insurance, says that Caitlin is part of a long Thomas College tradition at the firm. “It all started with Dick Caron in the 1960s, and today we employ six Thomas alums or current students.” She adds that, “Caitlin was able to see how an insurance agency operates and learn from peers in the office. During her internship, thomas.edu

she studied for and passed the property and casualty license exam with the State of Maine, which is required to service and sell insurance here. That opens up a world of opportunities for her post-graduation.”

JENNY LACROIX ’05 Jenny LaCroix is a Partner Marketing Manager with PlanSource, a high-growth software company specializing in benefits administration technology. “The education and experience I received from Thomas provided me with the foundational knowledge and skills I needed to start a career,” Jenny says. “From my coursework and time spent playing field hockey, I acquired skills that I now rely on daily: marketing competence, networking, balancing work and home life, and professional etiquette (thank you, Professor Meader). My professors left a lasting impression on me, especially my Marketing Professor, Professor Karush. I sought her out as a mentor, even after I graduated. My Thomas experience laid the groundwork so that when I started my career, I was able to learn and grow immediately.”

CONNOR PELLERIN ’23 As a second-year English major, Connor Pellerin already feels that he has been given opportunities to succeed. “I have been blessed with the opportunity to write for the ‘Terrier Roundup’ every month, work with fellow students as the Writing Peer Tutor; and share my love for the campus as a Student Ambassador,” he says. “Because of these experiences, multiple organizations have encouraged me to apply for jobs in their firms.” He adds that his professors and advisors are constant supports, sharing real-world knowledge that helps him hone his skills. “Thomas is truly opening doors for me and helping me shine.” Connor, who plans to pursue a career in public relations after graduating, knows Thomas is the right fit for him on a personal level, too. “I used to be shy and stayed inside my shell. At Thomas, I have had the chance to peek my head out of that shell and be myself. I am – and will forever be – grateful for the wonderful people who are the Thomas College community!” thomas.edu

WHITNEY (MOREAU) RAYMOND ’09, M.B.A. ’10 “Thomas opened many doors for me,” says Whitney Raymond. She now serves as the Vice President of Marshall Communications, a Maine-based, globally connected communications, public relations, and marketing company. Whitney cites the College’s accelerated MBA program as a helpful tool, allowing her to earn the degree in one year and positioning her for her role at Marshall Communications (founded by fellow alumna Nancy Marshall M.B.A. ’94). “Also, Professor Betty-Jane Meader made a lasting impact through her marketing coursework and by setting high expectations. I’m so pleased to have stayed in touch with her over the years. She reached out to me after my recent promotion, and I was deeply touched.”

SIMON WEST M.B.A. ’21 Simon West earned his MBA from Thomas in 2021 and works as the Director of Finance and Human Resources with the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, where he ensures the financial health and continued professionalism of the organization. H a v i n g g ra d u a t e d s o recently, Simon draws directly from the faculty and courses that were most influential in shaping his career to date. “While every professor has had a significant impact on my skills and abilities, three professors’ course materials had the most direct impact on my career. Information I learned in Dr. Donald Cragen’s Organizational Theory, Dr. Ryan Wheaton’s Principles of Management, and Dr. Frank Appunn’s Teams, Authority, and Influence courses help me work with my organization to break down siloed functional areas; become more efficient; and create high-performance, self-managed teams. These courses have also helped me to be better prepared for work with outside stakeholders and to generate buy-in from employees and partners alike.” n FALL 2021 & ANNUAL REPORT  THOMAS MAGAZINE 7

Holly was from China, ME, and Kip was from Auburn, MA. Kip first saw Holly during their 1968 Thomas orientation on the Silver Street campus. He remarked to his friend Allen Hall ’73, “Look at that girl; she is absolutely beautiful. I’m going to marry her!” Kip was instantly and totally smitten, and when I met them for this article, that was clearly still the case. Kip and Holly met at a party I threw at my College Avenue apartment. When Holly arrived, the place was packed. Kip quickly offered her his lap from his spot on the couch. She gratefully accepted, and they have been together ever since. In 1968, boys were not allowed in girls’ dorm rooms under penalty of expulsion. One day, Kip took that risk, visiting Holly. Suddenly, the fire alarm went off, and all the girls exited the building. Fortunately for Kip, who hid in the closet, unsure if it was a drill or a real fire,

Jim, who has been a Thomas employee for more than a decade, has built student recreational opportunities on and off campus and has worked to engage students outside of the classroom. “I am overwhelmingly excited about this new opportunity to engage and work with students here at Thomas,” says Jim. “I have always said that the best part of my job is the students I get to work with. Now, working with community assistants [formerly resident assistants], that role has expanded. Saying that working with students is the best part of my job is truer than ever!” n

Athletics Wrap-Up Thomas College Athletics was back in action this fall with a full slate of games for our teams. MEN’S SOCCER advanced to the quarterfinals of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship, losing 3-1 to University of Maine Farmington. The highlight of the season, an early morale booster, was beating rival Colby at home and in overtime – the first time since 2015 that the Terriers bested the Mules. Eric LaBrie and Zenawi Bowen both scored a team high seven goals in the season. Bowen, Prince Kunieki, and Hayden Elwell were named to the NAC Men’s Soccer First Team, while LaBrie and Joshua Joseph were named to the Second Team. Kunieki was also named to the NAC Men’s Soccer Sportsmanship Team. WOMEN’S SOCCER finished the season 4-11 overall and 4-4 in NAC conference games, barely missing the playoffs. The Terriers’ biggest wins of the season were against SUNY-Canton and University Maine Farmington. First-year Mary LaRochelle was a standout, scoring four goals in her first season. Senior Katriana Pratt, who had two goals and one assist this season, was named to the NAC Women’s Soccer Sportsmanship Team. FIELD HOCKEY had an outstanding season, making it all the way to the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship Finals before falling to Husson University 2-1 in overtime. Senior Britney Gregoire was named NECC Player of the Year, and Head Coach Andrea Thebarge M.B.A. ’14 was named NECC Coach of the Year. Gregoire’s twin sister Lindsey and first-year Julia Reny were named NECC All-Conference players. First-year Brennan Pinto started most of the games in the goal cage for Thomas, going 7-4 this season with a goals-against-average of 2.43, posting one shutout. In MEN’S GOLF, the team finished third in the NAC Championship behind Husson and SUNY-Delhi. Sophomore Dylan Cunningham was voted to the NAC First Team All-Conference, and junior Ben Gosselin was named to the NAC Golf Sportsmanship Team. WOMEN’S TENNIS had a great season, finishing 6-6 overall and 4-2 in conference, losing in the NAC Championship Finals to rival Husson. Junior Kiara Goggin went 5-2 at #1 singles and was named Co-Player of the Year. Goggin and her doubles partner, junior Lauren Smith, also picked up All-Conference Singles and Doubles Awards. Junior Renee Rossi was named to the Sportsmanship Team, and Coach Rob Disch was named Co-Coach of the Year. On the CROSS COUNTRY front, the Men’s and Women’s teams finished seventh in the NAC Championship on our own Sukeforth Family Trail System here at Thomas. Jarrod Hooper was a standout for the men, winning two races and finishing eighth in the NAC Championship. Hooper was also named to the All-Conference First Team. Among the women runners, firstyear Sophie O’Clair won the first race of the season at University of Maine Presque Isle and went on to post other top five finishes this season. n thomas.edu

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Welcomes New Inductees

T

O KICK OFF HOMECOMING AND FAMILY WEEKEND on Friday, October 15,

Thomas College welcomed alumni, families, and friends to the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction and Dinner. This year’s inductees were Joseph “Jay” Fogg ’96, recognized for his performance on the men’s soccer team, and the late Dr. Nelson Madore P’04, honored for his years of dedication to Thomas athletics and student-athletes. Jay spoke of the highly personal, supportive experience he enjoyed on the soccer team, surrounded by caring coaches, teammates, faculty like Dr. Madore, and his family. Alumna Maren Madore ’04 shared remarks about her father and how important the athletics program was to him. “The student-athletes of Thomas College brought such joy to my dad,” she noted. “He loved every single minute he got to spend being [their] fan.” This marked the final year of locating inductee plaques in the existing Athletic Hall of Fame; in 2022, recognition will be featured in the new sports center, including previously inducted athletes and coaches. The current hall, located near the Larry Mahaney Gym, will remain in place. n

ANTONIO MARTINEZ ’20

Remembered with Scholarships, Bullpen

O

N SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16 , during Homecoming and Family Weekend,

more than 100 alumni, students, friends, faculty, and staff gathered at the H. Allen Ryan Baseball Field to remember Antonio Martinez, who passed away just a day after Thomas’s 2020 Commencement ceremony. Three scholarships were awarded in his honor, and the College announced the naming of the Antonio Martinez ’20 Bullpen. The investments were made possible thanks to the hard work of the College’s all-volunteer Student Philanthropy Team and the nearly 100 donors who contributed in Antonio’s memory. Antonio’s family, including his parents, grandmother, and brothers, traveled from Florida to attend the event. Dr. Greg King, Head Baseball Coach, spoke of the positivity and enthusiasm Antonio brought to everything he did, his dedication to self-improvement, and his acts of kindness to everyone he met. “You should know,” Dr. King said during his remarks, turning to Antonio’s parents, “that you did an excellent job raising your son.” Thank you to the Martinez family and the many supporters who contributed to this special effort. n

18TH

On September 10, 2021, Thomas College hosted its 18th Annual Lunder Scholars Golf Invitational at the beautiful Belgrade Lakes Golf Club. Each year, the tournament generates much-needed scholarship support for Maine students attending Thomas, with proceeds directed to the College’s Lunder Scholars Endowment Fund. Since the tournament’s inception in 2002, nearly $695,000 has been generated from the endowment for the benefit of 383 student recipients. This year, thanks to our sponsors, players, and donors, the event netted more than $127,600 – which the Lunder Foundation generously doubled for a total of over $255,300 raised. Thank you! If your company or organization is interested in participating in 2022, please save the date for Friday, September 9. Contact Erin Baltes, AVP of Advancement, for more information at erin.baltes@thomas.edu or (207) 859-1327.

Students Giving to Students This year’s Student Philanthropy Team has hosted several successful events on campus to help raise awareness of their work: to educate their fellow students about the impact of philanthropy at Thomas and generate support for their peers. The all-volunteer group will work to raise funds throughout the year for students who participate in low- or no-paying internships, creating scholarship aid so they can afford to take on meaningful, career-building work opportunities.

To help, please visit thomas.edu/give and choose “Student Philanthropy Team Scholarship” from the menu of ways to designate your gift. Thank you!
