W
ELL—THAT SEMESTER FLEW!
And what a wonderful one it was, full of reasons to celebrate and reminders of the tenacity and heart for which Thomas is known. Fall is always a busy time as first year students land and find their feet and returning students come “home,” eager to see friends, connect with faculty and resume their college campus routines. Having students on campus is like an annual revival, reminding us of the joy of our work, the lifelong friendships formed, and futures forged here. Unlike many colleges, Thomas’ enrollment grew 3.3% this fall. In addition, we saw record retention, record residency, and record incoming class GPA. While challenges remain in the realm of academia, so does respect for Thomas as a source of great education and experience both in and outside of the classroom. October brought vibrancy to our campus community with a thoughtful Diversity Week (pg 18), largely organized and hosted by students, featuring student speakers from six different countries, an interactive Ghanian drumming demonstration, international food, and a panel discussion on world religions. It was an honoring of our differences and how they can unite rather than divide. We hosted Homecoming and Family weekend and oh what a sight to see our parking lots filled and our campus absolutely buzzing! The weekend launched on Friday with the well-deserved induction of two esteemed alumni, Jamie Eastlack ’93 and Bob Moore ’79, into the Dick and Betty-Jane Meader Athletics Hall of Fame (pg 8). Saturday brought throngs of alumni, family and friends to campus to cheer on our athletes against our rivals up North, and while we
did not win on the scoreboard, seeing the Sukeforth Family Sports Center windows filled with faces and the sidelines occupied felt like a true victory to us! Day of Giving (pg 11) was another exceptional display of Thomas Terrier determination. Our incredible supporters surpassed expectations by outraising and out-participating all our goals. You lived this year’s theme – Terriers Together – and proved that together is a great place to be. Our athletics program (pg 14) is growing and making us all proud. This year, we solidified a partnership with WHOU for livestreaming games. If you can’t make it in person, you can still catch the action and support the Terriers you love! Our friends, family and alumni were touched by the tragedy in Lewiston resulting in the loss of life and psychological safety. Faculty, staff and students navigated these losses together in a heartwarming display of community that emphasized the importance of a place and feel like Thomas’. These wrinkles in our experience made our opportunities to gather – physically and virtually through philanthropic support – all the more meaningful. We remain grateful for each of you and the role you play in making Thomas what it is and ensuring it stays that way for our students of promise today and tomorrow. We wish you, your loved ones, and friends the best as the new year launches. There’s so much potential in an unwritten year. Make this a great chapter! With gratitude, Laurie G. Family Weekend
Homecoming & Family Weekend was held on October 20-22. Campus was buzzing from the get-go and soggy by Sunday, but much merriment was had in between! Alumni, friends, family and students came out in droves to enjoy events for every age – face and pumpkin painting for the kids, athletic events, dedications and more. It was a wonderful opportunity to see new and former Terriers come together in celebration of Thomas!

Bob Moore BOB LETTERED IN VARSITY BASKETBALL at Attleboro High in
Massachusetts and repeated that achievement at Thomas College, adding a varsity letter in golf along the way. While Bob was an admirable team contributor throughout his academic career, his biggest contributions came in the form of community involvement that elevated athletic opportunities
for area youth and generally enhanced quality of life for those in the Kennebec Valley. Bob coached youth basketball through the Kennebec Valley YMCA for several years and served on their board of directors. His dedication was honored through several accolades, including being named the KVYMCA Man of the year in 1991, being recognized as the KVYMCA Family of the year in 1995, and by being inducted into the KVYMCA Hall of Fame in 2005. Among other beneficiaries of Bob’s passion for people and community are Cony High School, where he was a founding Member of Team Cony, and where he led several fundraising efforts including building the new high school and Fuller Field, a state-of-the-art turf field and track. Along the way, he also put his talents to use in support of his alma mater, serving as Thomas’ Senior VP of Advancement for nearly a decade, raising millions of dollars in support of the institution and the generations of students it has and will continue to serve. His contributions to community have been recognized by Le Club Calumet with the Outstanding Citizen Award in 2007 and he’s received two Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce Community Service awards for his work with the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed and the Augusta Food Bank. Even with all these accomplishments, Bob’s proudest achievement is his family. He resides in South China with his wife Susan MS ’14. They have four grown children and eight grandchildren.
Jamie Eastlack A NATURAL ATHLETE, JAMIE leant his talent to tennis, ice hockey,
and soccer throughout his collegiate career. In 1992 he took first place in the Golf Team State Tournament and went undefeated in tennis. In 1991, he was recognized as the most improved player on the ice hockey club team, a testament to his determination and drive. While he found success in every athletic arena he entered, the soccer pitch was where he was most at home and accomplished his great achievements. He was an NAIA District AllStar in 1990, 1991, and 1992; a Western Maine Athletic Conference All-Star in 1991 and 1992; the Western Maine Athletic Player of the Year in 1992; a Terrier Indoor Classic All-Star in 1990 and 1991; and a New England Intercollegiate Soccer All-Star Senior in 1992, which earned him a spot in the Senior Bowl at Brown University. Nineteen ninety-two proved to be Jamie’s year, as he added accolades to an already lengthy list – recognized to the Maine Soccer Coaches Collegiate All-Star Team and was a NAIA Third Team All American. thomas.edu
Driven in the classroom as well as in athletics, Jamie graduated from Thomas College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management. He resides in Rangeley with his wife Beth, and two grown daughters. n FALL 2023 & ANNUAL REPORT THOMAS MAGAZINE

THOMAS COLLEGE DAY OF GIVING
TERRIERS Day of Giving (DOG), hosted on November 27–28, provided humbling results that support every aspect of Thomas’ mission. Our priority funds this year were greatest need; mental health, wellness and accessibility; scholarships; and athletics. Nearly 900 donors contributed more than $411,000—dollars that will change lives and those lives will change the world. Well done, you!

Thomas College Partners with Local Employers & Alumni to Give Students Hands-on Experience
T
HOMAS COLLEGE IS KNOWN
for guaranteeing its graduates a job after graduation. But it takes a lot of work to get there. Thomas College’s Professional & Career Development team works hard year-round to create opportunities for students to prepare them for careers post-graduation. This October, the Professional & Career Development team partnered with alumni, preferred employer partners, and local businesses to provide Thomas College students with workshops facilitated by seasoned career veterans. The goal was to offer workshops that would give insight into job opportunities, networking, the pathway from student to professional, and how to navigate being a young professional. “The importance of providing these workshops is beyond measure, as it removes barriers for our students and sets them up for success upon graduation,” said Professional and Career Development Director Amanda Wrigley. Over 100 students—ranging from first year students to graduate students—took advantage of Fall Career Readiness Week, with some even attending more than one session.
Events throughout the week included: Director of Information Systems MICHAEL KEIGHLEY, Manager, ERP & Business Systems, Thomas College alumni FORREST LABBE ’15 and Information Systems Supervisor TIMOTHY LECLAIR ‘03 from Maine General IT joined us to discuss employment opportunities within the healthcare system and the various roles within the organization. They showcased a variety of options for not just healthcare workers, but for students studying IT, Cybersecurity, business, and even more majors.
A fan favorite with a total of 19 students attending was an Interview Roulette workshop.
CHRISTINA HUGHES, Recruiter for CIANBRO; DAN SYLVESTER, Management Consultant at Deloitte; and MIKE DUGUAY, Director of HAIBI and VP of Innovation at Thomas College held a round table discussion about the experience they each have in interviewing. They explained differences in how they conduct interviews, the different formats they may run into, and skills that will best prepare them.
PCD hosted panelists NICOLE LAZURE, JMG specialist at Thomas College, MIKAELA ZIOBRO, Senior Director of Graduate and Professional Studies (MBA), and NED ERVIN, co-owner of Freedom’s Edge Cider in Albion. They spoke about their unique and diverse work experiences.
MEMIC held a lunch and learn on ‘Building your Brand’—which comes in handy when you are trying to stand out against other applicants. Staff from the PCD office brought students to the MidMaine Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event for some real time networking with the central Maine community!
AN EMPLOYER WHO PARTICIPATED during
the week, Dan Sylvester, management consultant at Deloitte said, “We are in an unprecedented time where competition for jobs at top companies is fierce. Any edge students can gain is vital to their success. Attending Career Readiness programs that focus on interviewing skills, tips and practice scenarios is a giant step in the right direction.” Career Readiness Week was a success thomas.edu
Dean Jackman (left) came back to campus to give advice to fellow future Thomas College alumni.
The week ended on a high note, getting to hear from alum Dean Jackman and friend of the college David Farago from Ameriprise Financial Service who came with a wealth of financial advice including investments as a young professional and how to manage your personal finances. Alumna Alexis Bowman also presented in this session on her path from college student and intern, to being hired for Golden Pond Wealth Management. A whopping 40 students attended this session.
Elenie White and Stephanie Brown from the Maine Insurance Agents Association Young Agents Committee, Johnny Swan (TC alum) Realtor at Brookewood Realty, and Cliff Hannen from Four Seasons Wealth Management joined us for the final workshop of the week. The three breakout room sessions covered the variety of paths one could take in the Insurance, reality, and wealth management professions, all industries in which the PCD office provides funding to get certifications and licenses through the FIRE & ICE program.
and just a glimpse into what the Professional & Career Development Office has to offer students. Career Readiness Week was followed by on-campus Career Fairs for student internships and job opportunities. “We were thrilled to have such an incredible turnout where this is a relatively new initiative,” said Wrigley. “Truthfully, our students are already pretty impressive, and we just give them tools they need to achieve that extra confidence, and if they
decide to take advantage of what our office provides then chances are they are going to be successful.” n A huge thank you to everyone who participated, both employers and students. Another thank you to faculty and staff who encouraged their students to attend these workshops. Stay tuned for what next semester’s Career Readiness Week will entail! If you have ideas or want to participate, please email Amanda Wrigley at amanda.wrigley@thomas.edu.

Fall Diversity Week THIS FALL, STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF participated in Fall Diversity Week, a week-long of interactive events held once a semester. This semester’s theme was Integrating Our Differences. As the first college in Maine to establish a DEI task force, Thomas College has sustained an intentional, campus-wide effort to advance knowledge and action related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The Thomas College Presidential Council on DEI includes representatives from students, faculty, staff and executive administration, board of trustees, and alumni. The Council’s Student Intern, Moian Nyangau, along with assistance from folks across campus, provided leadership and organization of students’ involvement in the week’s wide variety of events, programs, and activities. “The diversity week was a success as we experienced a colorful blend of stories from all across the world, shared our religions, enjoyed a variety of cuisines, and learned how to play Ghanian drums. People learned a lot from the different events, and I am glad I was a part of it,” said student organizer Moian. This fall’s activities included an international students plan including student speakers from Mexico, Brazil, Ghana, Egypt/Armenia, Turkey, and Australia; a live and interactive drumming session featuring the Akwaaba Ensemble; a religion panel including speakers from the community representing Christianity, Judaism, and Islam; and a game night show 18

with themes about being a Mainer. Each day, international meals were served in the Dining Center with student provided recipes for meals from Kenya, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Mexico, Brazil, and Bermuda. “Each semester, Thomas sponsors Diversity Week with the goal of educating all members of the Thomas community. As we prepare students to enter the workforce upon graduation, we need to provide education and exposure on a variety of DEI issues to help them understand that we live in a more global and diverse society,” said Dean of Student Affairs Lisa Desautels-Poliquin. “Just as important, we need to open and provide the space for conversations, so everyone feels welcome and included on campus. We also know that education and awareness doesn’t all happen in one week. Having student voice as part of our ongoing efforts throughout the year really helps to focus on what is relevant and important for our campus.” The week was highly attended, and great conversations were had! n thomas.edu

THOMAS MAGAZINE FALL 2023 & ANNUAL REPORT
Mary Fessenden FORMER STAFF
Mary Fessenden died peacefully in her own home on Aug. 15, 2023, after a long fight with cancer, attended by her loving husband, Landon St. Peter. Mary was very proud that she had earned her Massage Therapist certification in Virginia Beach, Va. in 2010, and kept her Maine license current. She used her training and knowledge to start a small Maine business she called Mary’s Therapies. She loved helping people improve their health and live a more eco-friendly life style. She made soaps, lotions, bug sprays, and other custom products using all natural ingredients and essential oils. Mary worked at Thomas College for more than five years, where she was the face of the food service division and in close daily contact with the entire student body and staff. She was well known on the campus and loved by all. Her friendly demeanor, ready smile, and a hug when needed helped many an incoming freshman to adjust to the pace of campus life. Before moving to Maine in 2012, Mary was a long-time resident of Norfolk, Va., where she ran the local VFW canteen for over 10 years. It was there that she met her future husband, Landon St. Peter. She was a lifetime member of VFW Auxiliary Post 3160 in Ocean View, Va., and was well respected in the veteran community for all her volunteer work and organizational skills. Mary loved a party and she loved to cook for friends and family. A small gathering could become a major event because she wanted to invite everyone. A recent Easter dinner for 12 became dinner for 28 before everyone sat down to eat. Folding chairs and trays were rounded up, folks ate in the kitchen and living room and a great time was had by all. Her wit and good nature will be sorely missed. thomas.edu

FOR ALUMNI QUESTIONS OR UPDATES:
thomas.edu
Suzanne Marie (Michaud) Pooler, 58, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 26, 2023, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, from dementia. Sue was born on March 17, 1965, in Augusta to Richard and Joyce Michaud and graduated from Cony High School in 1983. She attended Mid-State College in Augusta and the University of Maine at Augusta, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Management in 1995. Being a lifelong learner, Sue went on to Thomas College where she earned her Master of Business Administration and was inducted into Sigma Beta Delta in 1997. During her time earning various degrees, she worked as the business manager for Dr. James Davis, DDS, dental practice in Lewiston, Director of Financial Aid at Mid-State College in Augusta, Adjunct Faculty at Thomas College and ended her working career in 2011 as the Assistant Dean for Graduate and Continuing Education at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. She always said the best part of her work in education was helping students succeed. Sue also volunteered her time with the United Way of Mid Maine, serving on various committees and as the board chair in 2010. Sue met her husband Michael Pooler while they were both students at Thomas College and were married on February 13, 1998. Sue was an avid birder, loved shopping with her sister Mary and spending time upta camp with family and friends, especially our neighbors, Nancy and Dave Vanorse. Sue was predeceased by their daughter, Kathrine Mary Pooler; her parents, Richard Michaud and Joyce Foster; and mother-in-law, Mary Pooler. She is survived by her husband, Colonel (retired) Michael Pooler of Oakland; sister, Mary Michaud of Augusta; aunt, Carol Judkins of Manchester; cousin, Gaila and Tom Beach of Biddeford; father-in-law, Dan Pooler of Brewer; in laws: Kathy (Pooler) and Steve Smith of Troy, Rod and Jill Pooler of New Gloucester, and Jim and Michelle Pooler of Morrill; nieces Jessica Smith, Lauren McArthur, Abbie Berry and Grace Pooler; nephews, Ryan Pooler and Austin Turner; and great-nieces and great-nephews. Mike, Mary, and the family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, especially Kayla and Cathy, for all the professional, loving, and dignified care they provided Sue during the past six- and one-half years, especially during the COVID times.
