Why Biology at Thomas College?

NEW in Fall 2025, Thomas College will offer a Bachelor of Science in Biology. This program will be offered in two different degree paths including biology and pre-professional concentration.

Using the new science labs, students will gain knowledge and technical skills they need to conﬁdently enter careers in various laboratory and ﬁeld sciences.

This program is hands-on and lab-based where students will be able to explain the organization, structure, and function of unicellular and multicellular life; describe the interconnectedness of diverse forms of life; demonstrate proficiency in lab and field techniques using standard lab equipment while following accepted protocols; demonstrate competency in data analysis and presentation; and identify primary sources of scientific literature, analyze, interpret, and critically evaluate data.

The forensics concentration in the Criminal Justice program teaches students the skills necessary to preserve at the crime scene, evaluate evidence in the laboratory and testify as an expert witness. Get an inside look into what happens from a crime scene to the lab and to the court – with mock simulations of crime scene processing and evidence evaluations, learning how to write search warrants.

The Conservation Law Enforcement concentration at Thomas College provides students with a strong foundation in the conservation and environmental issues that criminal justice personnel must address in Maine, the New England region, and across the nation. The Public Administration concentration in the Political Science program at Thomas College is focused on a career-oriented path. The concentration incorporates a mix of courses from the political science suite, accounting, ﬁnance, and management. The concentration allows students to take specialty courses, including classes from a consortium of colleges, that then would develop a stronger career path in public administration. Why Psychology (Mental Health) at Thomas College?

Study human behavior with a focus on mental health. A Psychology major with a Mental Health concentration can prepare students to work with a variety of populations that have issues with mental health and/or substance abuse. In addition to all required courses in the Psychology program, students will take Wellness for the Helping Professional (PY260), Marriage and Family (PY326) and Counseling Theories (PY425). Students will also have a fourth psychology elective that will be a choice of Drugs, Addiction and Crime (PY240), Child Psychology (PY335), Adolescent Psychology (PY336) or Seminar in Dementia (PY449), allowing them to tailor the program to the population of their choice. The mental health concentration is a good ﬁt for entry level careers in behavioral health and social work, as well as good preparation for entering graduate school in Social Work or Clinical Psychology.

Why Global Sustainability at Thomas College?

A growing ﬁeld, global sustainability is a multi-disciplinary degree program encompassing multiple disciplines offered at Thomas: science, social studies, humanities, education, economics, and business.

This program is especially timely today because of the supply-chain issues creating shortages of products ranging from lithium to helium, oil to wheat, and even including climate-related resources such as water and energy. The time is now for careers and personal understanding of global sustainability. Students in this program will explore social and management principles through the lens of the triple bottom line (People, Planet, Proﬁts) thinking in their careers and personal lives, while also broadening their exposure to global issues and cultures, including environmental justice and social justice. This ﬁeld of global sustainability is growing and jobs are too; the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that sustainability jobs will increase 16% annually for the next decade.
