As Head of London College of Fashion I am privileged to oversee one of the biggest specialist fashion education communities in the world. We offer a supportive, enabling, and experimental environment in which to work with state of the art facilities and passionate and dedicated staff.
Each year we aim to increase the number of opportunities for cross discipline collaboration and industry linked projects which result in exciting, unexpected and bold outcomes. This year we have been proud to work with Adidas, Topshop and Sony Ericsson to name a few. We’ve also shared in great successes such as BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology student Stine Riis securing first prize and 50,000 Euros in H&M’s inaugural Design Awards.
As we enter a period of fundamental change in the Higher Education sector, now more than ever, the role industry can play has never been so crucial. As educators we must continue to be responsive to changes in the fashion industry and sensitive to the skills that are needed in a rapidly changing world, and just as our students will demand more from us, we in turn must demand more from industry.
It is opportunities like these which provide a vital link into industry for emerging talent and help us to support the next generation of successful creative professionals. I look forward to welcoming you to the BA Graduate Season 2012 in June; an opportunity to spot the future talent of our industry, and to forging more creative and exciting industry projects in 2013.
Looking at the breadth of talent within these pages I am confident that our students are demonstrating multiple abilities, they are not just brilliant designers, but technical specialists with an awareness of the issues which affect the future of our industry.

If there’s one thing for certain it's change. The very nature of education, especially design, is to question, rethink, evolve and progress what’s there or to propose what is not. It is our job to predict if not design the future. I've always been about questions because answers seem so finite and design is so infinite. A world without change, to me, is a world without thought. I’m not talking about needless change, but reflective and evaluative change about what’s gone before, what works, what doesn’t and how we can learn and grow. I view each one of my students for what they are; designers, creatives and individuals in the making. Education and study at London College of Fashion is one of the most exciting, dynamic and challenging arenas in which to begin this journey...
unique we wanted our models to exude the qualities and distinctive identities that our designers have worked hard to create. All the models in this newspaper are street cast and embody the character and confidence, which help communicate the designer’s vision. Showing that beauty is not defined by one look or one person, that identity has many wonderful faces is a central theme for 2012. Debate and dialogue is an essential component of the journey. Our students are encouraged to have strong opinions about many current debates including ethics in fashion and sustainability. A good example of this are the projects ‘For Fur’ and ‘Foe Fur’ which have explored the controversial issue of the use of fur in the fashion industry. Both projects will be featured on our annual portal page live from June 2012. http://www. fashion.arts.ac.uk/2012
We begin the year by challenging students to look inwards and search for themselves. All their feelings, thoughts and visions are incorporated into their designs and reflect their identities and dreams. Capturing this spirit and helping them discover what makes them unique is our goal. Interrogating identity has been a theme of 2012 and has been supported through the curriculum and industry linked projects. Students have asked themselves some tough questions - what defines me, who am I? Their responses are spiritual, multi-cultural, political, extraterrestrial and challenging – and the process is only just beginning.
To paraphrase Ruskin, we teach not only to design, but also to see. As educators we must show that the world is full of boundless inspiration and information. Fashion design has never been and never will be simply about clothes, here at LCF this is at the heart of everything we do. By challenging, questioning and connecting the new designer can see the world in a new light. As you look through this annual take a moment to consider the vast potential of our new designers and how they can help you to see the world in a new way. Each designer within these pages tells a story, I hope you enjoy ...
In line with this re-focusing on identity we started to challenge the way we present our young designers collections. After last years successful catwalk debut of our street cast models we extended the search to find new faces that could be included in our editorial and film pieces as well as our forthcoming show in June 2012.
