As you browse through the highlights from this year’s BA 2011 collections, the overwhelming theme that emerges is one of creative innovation, technical skill and craftsmanship. Each collection, reflects our mission to produce graduates of the highest calibre, equipped with the skills and abilities demanded by the fashion industry – one of Britain’s most crucial economic powerhouses. Not only have this year’s graduates produced high quality, creative pieces, but they have also demonstrated advanced technical detailing that have brought their designs to life. Over the past year, London College of Fashion have been privileged to work on some unique collaborations, perhaps most notably in 2011 with the English National Ballet - a cross course collaboration, giving students the opportunity to work on a brief which gave them extraordinary access into a world not available to the public. It is opportunities such as these, which give our students a unique experience which we believe sets them apart and will help them launch successful careers. We look forward to working hand in hand with industry over the coming years to ensure we continue to produce the fashion industry professionals of tomorrow. Head of College | Professor Frances Corner OBE

I am pleased to present this year’s outstanding talent from the School of Design and Technology at London College of Fashion. Our community of design students have worked with energy and enthusiasm to create unique and exciting work that blends traditional craftsmanship with new technology. When you look closely at the work, at the hand drawings, the garments hanging on rails and through holding and feeling the product, each piece is bursting with beautiful detailing and consummate skill; they show a real love for all those areas that make design such an important and creative field. Sometimes the work is all about an absolute dedication to form, shape, feel and quality, occasionally closer to art than clothing, and sometimes the work is not just about the final outcome but reflects thoughts and feelings about image, identity, dreams and desires. It is important to remember that these new graduates are demonstrating multiple abilities - they are not only the designer but also the pattern cutter, the manufacturer, the colourist, the fabric specialist, the researcher, the embroiderer, the illustrator, the graphic designer and the production manager. They have much to offer our industry and are constantly finding new ways to challenge what we know and how we do it. This year there has been an overwhelming trend for experimental work based around fusing traditional techniques with high spec technology. Colour is also a key trend, essential in bringing together multitextured garments with new proportions, executed in both a modern and traditional style. Almost uniformly we are identifying a 3D narrative around the tension between the natural world and the human impact upon it – resulting in work that is inspirational and forward thinking. One of the most powerful outcomes from creating this portfolio is the stories that emerge – it is hugely rewarding to see each designer discover their design signature and express their identity, thoughts, feelings and personality through their designs. To see work from all our 2011 graduates please visit www.fashion.arts.ac.uk/2011 and browse by subject or keyword. For now, enjoy. For later, employ! Lien

Bui

Lien Bui The main inspiration behind my collection is the style and quality of Tamara’s Lempicka’s paintings and the frame of streamlined automobiles and bold mixture of texture and colour in Nikolai Howalt’s photographic studies on car crashes. The idea for this collection is to cross the Art Deco style of Tamara Lempicka’s painting with “Streamline” – American art deco design inspired by the machine age. No artist has exemplified the quintessentially French Art Deco style better than Tamara de Lempicka. Her hard-as-nails portraits - the rich and famous painted in violent colors - has captivated my attention and curiosity. In this collection I wanted to grasp her unique, modern and exclusive sensual style of painting and attempt to apply it into clothing. Blending it with Streamline I was aiming to create a current and original style. Streamline design with it's use of bold, abstract motifs, enables me to create a sleek, seductive look that celebrates the increasingly mechanised tempo of daily life. I am aiming to create a collection that is contemporary in terms of silhouettes, shapes, details as well as the material choice. The diversity of fabric choice in colour, texture and quality are a strong demonstration of the influence from Nicolai Howalt's car crash studies. The materials and colour palette are bold, strong and contemporary. I hope that the cohesion, movement, simplicity and continuity are visible in this collection. I am a self motivated and creative person who enjoys working within a team but also thrives on working on individual projects and tasks. I am conscientious and have strong communication skills and can easily adapt to new environments and social situations. I believe that the boundaries of footwear design can be pushed by creative concepts and artistic techniques, as well as a knowledge of the craft of construction which I have covered in depth throughout my degree. My work reflects my personal style and passion for minimal, wearable design and I relish the process of interpreting hand drawn designs into 3D functioning products.

My work is about challenging the conventional form of clothing. I like to work with preconceptions of generic garments and rework them structurally. I try to work with function in a playful way that is interesting beyond its use without removing its purpose. I try to cross items and function to create new items and silhouettes. Challenging the form of a product for me informs new design detail and construction styles. My process is to use a variety of techniques. I use a mixture of blocks, generic garments and fixed position stands which are all manipulated in different areas and reconstructed to create one item. I like to work with 3D sculptural and 2D flat patterns. I often use the body as a starting point for experimenting with shape and I always aim to give my clothing a human quality. I want the clothes to mimic poses of the body before they are worn. After graduating from my current course I would like to pursue a masters degree to further my specialism in menswear. Eventually I am interested in working overseas and gaining experience in working with large sportswear companies. I wish to continue to broaden my knowledge through industry in preparation to eventually feel confident about successfully starting wmy own brand.

For me, design as the visual medium of expression recognises and embraces the endlessly multi-faced opinions and beliefs of society at any one time. It acts as a reflection of people, of the environments they inhabit and the social affairs they witness. The opportunities provided by my studies at London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins have given me a realistic grounding into the design processes and essential techniques within Fashion Knitwear. As a designer I am constantly referring to relevant and universal themes with an aesthetic and ethical emphasis. Within my designs I aspire to preserve the historic aspects whilst providing a fresh appearance. I intend to provide a feeling of timeless harmony with an enduring quality, working against the obsolescent, short-lived fashion currently so prevalent. Within textiles I aim to pioneer techniques which refine traditional craft and defy conventional knitwear construction. My aesthetic is melancholic with an eclectic and whimsical significance, often conservative mixed with a naive charm. Each garment contains its own identity, promoting individuality. I propose to provide a unique blend of textile technology for fashion combined with innovative design and commercial application. After graduation I intend to seek an opportunity within a fast paced creative design role in an established fashion company.

Boxy shapes, utilitarian, fluidity, playful colour and rich leather finishing’s, all describe the collection that I am currently producing. I am very much a product led designer, specialising in leather accessories. I wish to pursue a career as a designer and build on the existing skills and attributes that I have learnt in the industry so far and apply them to my next role in a working context. I believe in the power of the wearer within fashion. One garment can represent contrasting meanings on an assorted society, whether it be age, weight, height or race. Using this ethos I try and design using contrasting elements and references, to create clothes that have different interpretations, for every individual person. I like to keep a sense of fun and quirkiness to fashion, through use of silhouette, details, fabrics and especially colour. Yet I still try and create refinement in my garments. The research that inspires me often has a social edge, in a variety of medians; photographers, fashion, art, architecture, film, literature, music and other sources, as long as I feel it has a powerful message to myself. I then create drawings, illustrations, collages, samples and toiles to help develop my ideas and points of interest. When creating fashion I endeavour to use an artistic methodology. I aim to gain more experience over the coming years before pursuing a Masters Degree.

Through my works at Cordwainers at London College of Fashion, I have attempted to show new approaches in footwear construction and shapes. Therefore, my designs were focused more on lines and unusual materials or unfamiliar combinations. To me, the inspirations come from many different things but with its own aesthetic values. As a result of that, abnormal aesthetics and modernity became the major concept of my final collection. Initial ideas from prosthetic legs to research on minimal fashion and furniture design, the collection will show my true personality as a contemporary shoe designer. After graduation, I would like to gain more practical knowledge in the industry and would like to start my own label with originality.

I am a proactive and creative womenswear graduate seeking for an entry-level position in fashion design with a positive learning attitude. During my degree course I have shown my clear commercial understanding and technical garment designing and making skills in my on-going projects. The portfolio compiled of all my past projects represents me as a being and reflects my motivation alongside my fashion knowledge and organising skills. I like to put a lot of consideration in details and trims of my garments and I would consider my work to be quite minimalistic and sophisticated as they are simple and practical which often exaggerates and incorporates the wearer’s body shape.

Working on this collection will give me time to develop both personally and professionally; experimenting with ideas and materials within the enriching surroundings of a university. During my summer break I hope to gain valuable work experience to assist with my final collection and career goals. In the future I aim to specialise in designing and encouraging ecological production methods and to source local fabrics.

Layering, textiles, and craftwork, these are the elements, which are mainly seen on me, and my work. I always wear earth tones and muddy colours with multi layering. I am highly interested in creating intricate pattern and delicate design details, inspired by art and graphical elements. I always work with a loose fit and a unisex style as I believe that there are no sexual differentiations between males and females in fashion nowadays. Structure, silhouette and asymmetric cutting are usually seen in my work, I like to explore the character of the material and apply into my design and textiles. What I think, what I like, what I see, what I believe, are all about my love of fashion. In the coming future, I would like to have more hands-on experience in the fashion industry.

I design and make garments that I would want to wear. I pursue anatomic shapes and functional details. I would like to say that my style is innovative evolution. I make up a conceptual narrative for my research instead of using other artists as inspiration - which is interesting for my 2D work. This process deepens my design concept, and 3D developments wise I focus on anatomic design. The concept of my final collection is ‘metamorphosis'. Having seen a bug metamorphosise, i was reminded of my journey to be a fashion designer, but also it was massive design resource I could develop. My final collection shows the progress of changing shapes and details from the first to the last outfit. My future vision is launching my own brand which has unique designs and style. Therefore I would like to work with some brands as a designer or intern to improve my skills and abilities.

Colour is the most important aspect of my design work, both on my garments and my prints. I believe colour gives life and excitement to an outfit. My prints are bold and bright, a feast to the eyes with exquisite composition and colour clashes. Screen printing and hand dying give my garments an authentic look that is both unique and desirable, with a one off feel to all of my print designs. Clothes are part of our life, therefore I want the clothes to be part of a person's journey, a working effortless wardrobe that is withstanding. My ethos is to encapsulate an aura of authenticity and reserve timeless quality pieces, rather than just a transient/short lived fashion trend. Simple, clean and modern silhouettes are echoed throughout my designs to bring attention to the print textiles and customisation. Research is vital to my work, I indulge in new ideas and crave exploring the grand potential of something different.

Fashion to me should clash and contrast. Showing an edge, yet chic, feminine with masculine undertones, loose yet fitted. I believe this contrast is what creates modern and intriguing silhouettes within fashion. My style is minimalistic - using durable fabrics, refined details and neutral tonal colours, I create garments that maintain a stylish, sophisticated edge. Working within the confines of minimalism can be a challenge, to still form interesting elements and shapes, yet it’s this test that inspires me. Fabric manipulation, details and finishing’s therefore are very important to me, as it is with this high technical finish that creates this sleek look. Research plays a substantial role when designing my collection. Lines within architecture principally form my main body of research. Primary research, taking my own photos and sketching all inspires me to create a deeper collection. A collection that defines me in all my stylistic beliefs is what I aim to create. With my experiences in the past I believe I’m ready to take on a design role within a high fashion brand, helping me to gain the right experience, so that I can eventually start my own label.

I am fascinated by the material world, and surround myself with aesthetic patterns, prints and textiles, which I believe are essential to my designs. I design easy wear clothing, delicate in detail with clean and basic silhouettes, making the garments wearable and decent. I worked individually for each task, taking experience from my daily life. Since I stepped into the fashion industry, I believe fashion is a principle method that can evoke essential personality characteristics from a person.

My focus is always to end up with a genuinely crafted product. The manner in which it is made is important. The material choices. The colours. The purpose of it all. I want to try to fill spaces with designs that I personally would love to wear and so are different or at least ideas that are applied in a different way than what is normally seen out there. A shoe should be created with care and designed with every detail in mind. In the end, the wearer should feel that the personal energy put into it be passed along. To then give it a new life of it’s own and that life should last forever... or at least a very long time. I feel that is a good way to garner any deserved respect. I mean, there must be a function to any product being made. It must also be created with skill and great attention. Which in turn makes it beautiful. My project was looking at the the incredible way that Japanese designers or designers from Japan or maybe just the attention to detail that is so prevalent in almost everything designed in Japan. The culture interests me greatly and that is one major part of the interest. What I also really like is how they seem to look to the west for inspiration. In the history books of America, Britain and Europe in fashion/design/photography/ film/literature. Absorbing completely foreign ideas and making it ones own is, and executing it successfully, has made for an interesting trade where Western companies assign particular parts of their business to dedicate to a Japanese market. But in the end, my focus is on the care and discipline put into by the craftsmen. It is most impressive.

I would describe my personal style as distinctive, beauty as a bold type of femininity mixing textures, colours and clashing looks to represent a sophisticated playful statement. I gain inspiration from my surroundings, I want to represent what I find visually exciting and find a way to wear and become this, often creating unusual fusions and being drawn to what excites my senses, mainly colour, composition and texture. Styling is a major inspiration when I come to thinking of a collection; it is mainly the aura and composition of the visual as a collective that I want to capture as well as a desire to highlight the woman and her attitude wearing the pieces as much as the beauty and craftsmanship of the garments in their own right. My final collection highly echoes my personal style and the way I like to dress drawing on the theme of assemblage and reinvention of non-conventional fabrics through details.
