5 REASONS TO TAKE AN ART WORKSHOP
T
aking an art workshop can be a highly rewarding and enriching experience for anyone interested in art. Whether you’re making your first steps or exploring a new path on your artistic journey, professional artists across the country and beyond are willing to share their knowledge. From schools and ateliers to weeklong or weekend workshops, our Artists’ Guide to Workshops, Schools, and Ateliers can help you find the right opportunity for you. Here are five reasons you should sign up for a workshop today! SKILL ENHANCEMENT
Art workshops provide an immersive environment for skill development. Whether you’re a beginner or an
experienced artist, workshops offer hands-on instruction and guidance from skilled professionals. This focused learning experience can significantly enhance your technical abilities, helping you refine existing skills and acquire new ones. CREATIVE EXPLORATION
Workshops often encourage participants to experiment with different mediums, styles, and techniques. This exploration is essential for broadening your artistic horizons and discovering new avenues for self-expression. By stepping outside your comfort zone, you can unlock hidden talents and find innovative ways to convey your artistic vision.

COMMUNITY AND NETWORKING
Art workshops offer a unique opportunity to connect with likeminded individuals who share a passion for creativity. Building relationships with fellow artists can provide a supportive network for ongoing inspiration, collaboration, and feedback. The sense of community fosters a stimulating environment where ideas flow freely, and diverse perspectives contribute to individual and collective growth. GUIDANCE FROM EXPERTS
One of the key advantages of attending a workshop is the opportunity to receive guidance from experienced and knowledgeable instructors. These professionals often bring a wealth of expertise, providing valuable insights, tips, and constructive feedback. Learning directly from experts can accelerate your artistic development and offer a deeper understanding of the principles and nuances of various art forms. INSPIRATION AND MOTIVATION
Art workshops are designed to be inspirational and motivational experiences. Being surrounded by creative energy, witnessing the works of others, and participating in a collaborative setting can reignite your passion for art. The encouragement and feedback received during a workshop can serve as a powerful catalyst, propelling you to explore new ideas and continue your artistic journey with renewed enthusiasm. KELLY KANE

BRUSHING BEYOND BOUNDARIES A Guide to Maximizing Your Art Workshop Experience
A
rt workshops offer a unique opportunity for individuals to explore their creativity, learn new techniques, and connect with like-minded individuals. Whether you are a seasoned artist or a beginner, attending an art workshop can be a transformative experience. To ensure you make the most of this opportunity, consider the following tips to enhance your workshop experience and unleash your artistic potential. 1. SET CLEAR GOALS
Before attending an art workshop, take some time to define your goals. What specific skills or techniques do you want to learn or improve upon? Are you looking to experiment with a new medium or gain insights into a particular style of art? Setting clear goals will help you focus your energy during the workshop and maximize your learning experience. AWG8

2. EMBRACE AN OPEN MINDSET
Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Art workshops often provide a platform for experimentation and exploration. Embrace the opportunity to learn from the instructor and fellow participants, and be open to unexpected inspirations that may arise during the creative process.
3. PREPARE ADEQUATELY
Ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools required for the workshop. This includes your preferred sketching or painting supplies, notebooks, reference materials, and anything else mentioned in the workshop guidelines. Adequate preparation allows you to fully engage in the activities without interruptions and ensures you get the most out of the experience. 4. ENGAGE WITH THE INSTRUCTOR
Art workshop instructors are valuable resources for expanding your artistic knowledge. Take advantage of their expertise by actively engaging with them. Ask questions, seek clarification on techniques, and request feedback on your work. Many instructors appreciate students who show a genuine interest in learning, and your proactive approach can enhance your understanding of the artistic process. w w w . o u t d o o r p a i n t e r . c o m

6. DOCUMENT YOUR JOURNEY
Bring a sketchbook or journal to the workshop to document your creative journey. Record your thoughts, observations, and the techniques you learn. Documenting your experiences allows you to reflect on your progress and provides a valuable resource for future reference. It can also serve as a source of inspiration for your future artistic endeavors. w w w . o u t d o o r p a i n t e r . c o m

7. EMBRACE FEEDBACK
BARBARA JAENICKE OPA,AIS, AIS,PPSA-MP, SA-MP, IAPS-EP OPA, IAPS-EP
Constructive feedback is a crucial aspect of artistic growth. Be open to receiving feedback from both the instructor and your peers. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement and provide valuable insights that contribute to your artistic development. Approach feedback with a positive mindset, viewing it as a means to refine your skills and enhance your artistic expression. 8. TAKE BREAKS AND REST
Artistic endeavors can be mentally and physically demanding. Don’t hesitate to take breaks when needed. Resting and stepping away from your work for a short period can rejuvenate your creativity and prevent burnout. Use breaks to observe the works of others, gather inspiration, or simply clear your mind before returning to your own piece.

9. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE PROCESS
Art is not just about the final product; it’s also about the process. Immerse yourself fully in the creative journey, savoring each moment of experimentation and discovery. Allow yourself the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. The workshop environment often encourages a sense of playfulness and spontaneity — embrace it! 10. CONTINUE LEARNING BEYOND THE WORKSHOP
The workshop itself is just one step in your artistic journey. After the workshop concludes, continue practicing and applying the skills you've learned. Set aside dedicated time for regular creative sessions, experiment with different techniques, and challenge yourself with new projects. The true value of a workshop lies in its ability to ignite a spark that propels your artistic growth over the long term. OVERCOMING FIRST-TIME JITTERS •

•
Lori Putnam’s class gives a wave.
FINDING THE RIGHT WORKSHOP OR CLASS FOR YOU •
Remember that everyone started as a beginner; nobody is born painting.
•
Skill levels are often subjective. If you are unsure about the skill level required for a workshop or class, or want to know if you would fit in, ask. If a workshop is described as intermediate/ advanced, a motivated beginner can often prepare by taking a basic class, reading books, watching videos, and practicing techniques. Enthusiastic students with a positive attitude are a joy to have in class.
•
Art is like swimming; you are either in the water or not. There are many skills to acquire, and you can learn them with practice. Even a natural swimmer can improve with tips from a great coach.

Find artists you admire online. Sign up to be notified about workshops or classes.
Target artistic goals — do you want to learn to draw more accurately, loosen up, or approach value more confidently? Is location important? Travel desires can narrow your choice.
Examine the ratio of travel to art making. Tourist stops + multiple locations = less painting time. Study accommodations to make sure they meet any special needs (no stairs, private rooms, etc.). Ask friends for recommendations. Look for blog posts that describe the experience of a class or teacher.
Beware the “wait until I’m ready” mentality. You may never be fully ready. The purpose of a workshop is to immerse yourself in art in a learning environment.
MAXIMIZING YOUR EXPERIENCE •
•
•
•
Organize your materials well ahead of the workshop. Examine the supply list and order any items needed. Try everything out before you travel (paints, backpack, easel, etc.). Get reconciled to the fact that the paintings you make in class may not reflect your current skill level. This can be very difficult if you have a lot of prior art experience and training, but growth happens by working outside your comfort zone.
Speak up if you need help. Also, it’s nice to give feedback if you are learning and having a good time. Take care of yourself. Bring your favorite healthy snacks and food. Take a nap if you feel exhausted.

athleen Hudson has become one of the best waterfall painters there is by developing her own method. In this video, she reveals her painting secrets so you can make falling water move the viewer. A Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of America and the secondyoungest artist ™ ever to be elected a Fellow in the American Society of Marine Artists, Kathleen saw her career take off in 2017 with her painting Bright Morning, Timberline Falls, when it won the 6th Annual PleinAir Salon art competition. Always a keen observer, Kathleen has a lasting love and respect for the power and beauty of waterfalls and shares her techniques for bringing them to life. It’s impossible to think of everything (value, composition, color, brushwork, texture, edges, detail) at once, so Kathleen divides her painting process into stages of focus that make learning easy and success achievable for any painter, new or advanced. And waterfalls are the perfect subject for this multi-step method because they have such flexible and pronounced value designs with dramatic highlights, and the moving water makes them a great subject for getting creative!

athleen Hudson has become one of the best waterfall painters there is by developing her own method. In this video, she reveals her painting secrets so you can make falling water move the viewer. A Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of America and the secondyoungest artist ever to be elected a Fellow in the American Society of Marine Artists, Kathleen saw her career take off in 2017 with her painting Bright Morning, Timberline Falls, when it won the 6th Annual PleinAir Salon art competition.
