Artists’ Guide to Painting in North Carolina and Tennessee

This year our 11th annual Plein Air Convention & Expo (PACE) will be held in the eastern United States in the historic town of Cherokee, North Carolina. Home to a 57,000-acre Cherokee Indian reservation, this charming town offers a unique glimpse into the past with its replica of an 18th-century Oconaluftee Indian village. There is a plethora of opportunities for the plein air artist in this region: alluring mountain vistas, picturesque Great Smoky Mountains National Park, scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and nearby mineral hot springs.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a segment of the Appalachian range starting in Pennsylvania and extending southwest through Georgia. The Great Smoky Mountains are a subrange of the Blue Ridge Mountain system. The Blue Ridge Mountain Highway weaves for 469 miles, offering stunning vistas of mountains and the pastoral landscapes of the Appalachian highlands.

The name “Blue Ridge Mountains” is attributed to the delicate blue fog that envelops the mountains in the morning and evening. Plein air artists have long been inspired by the ever-changing vista, whether it be the glory of fall splendor or the soft greens of the mountains coming to life in the early spring. Often the weather can be extremely variable, and the plein air artist should be prepared. While enjoying a sunny, crisp autumn afternoon in Asheville recently, I was shocked to encounter rain and hail upon venturing onto the Blue Ridge Highway!

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, showcases the astonishing beauty of the Appalachian region. It is the most popular national park in the country, and is famous for the “magical, smoky haze” of its mountains. Cades Cove offers an opportunity to view diverse wildlife, including black bears and coyotes.

Visitors new to the region will find spectacular scenery and an enduring spirit of advocacy for the arts. The charming mountain town of Asheville, with its bustling gallery and culinary scene, is home to the River Arts District — 307 artists in 25 buildings. A weekly Asheville Drum Circle promotes harmony and inclusivity. Black Mountain College/Museum + Arts Center preserves the history of the rebellious college that was home to some of America’s leading visual artists, poets, and writers including Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, and Josef Albers. And be sure to go to the breathtaking Biltmore Estate, with its 8,000 acres of glorious gardens, cultural opportunities, and a winery.

Craft centers including Penland School of Craft, Southern Highland Craft Guild, and the Appalachian Craft Center testify to the long-enduring commitment to the arts. Nearby Charlotte, Boone, Blowing Rock, and Knoxville offer beautiful museums and galleries. Pigeon Forge, a mountain and vacation destination in Tennessee, is home to Dollywood and a vibrant country music scene.

Understandably, for several centuries painters have flocked to the region to enjoy and capture the rugged, spectacular terrain. Samuel Lancaster Gerry, a Boston area artist, ventured south and created Appalachian Mountain Sharecroppers (ca.1870s), an intimate, enduring image of the American South on view at the High Museum of Art.

Rudolph Ingerle, a Chicago-area artist originally from Vienna, Austria, was also drawn to the Southern Appalachian landscape and became known as “the Painter of the Smokies.” He painted en plein air and lured other plein air artists to the region, thereby contributing to the establishment of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934. Ingerle’s luminous, colorful landscape Sunday Afternoon (1929) preserves a moment in the history of the region with its stylized rendition of a small mountain homestead.

The Knoxville Museum of Art is currently exhibiting “Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee.” Be sure to visit this retrospective tracing the

artistic activity in Knoxville and its Appalachian environs from approximately the 1860s to the 1980s.

Today the art scene in North Carolina and Tennessee is vibrant and ever-growing! With art groups such as the North Carolina Plein Air Painters, the WNC (Western North Carolina) Plein Air Painters, and the Southeast Tennessee Plein Air Painters, the plein air tradition flourishes. And don’t forget to take advantage of the spectacular scenery throughout the states of Tennessee and North Carolina. From the coast to the mountains, there are plenty of opportunities and inspiration!

Insider Tips

A small water container reduces soaking of the paper and increases pigment intensity. A small plastic spray bottle to pre-wet your palette, create wet washes, move and remove pigment.

To paint aerial perspective, the colors are more saturated and darker in the foreground. If something looks dark in the background, paint it lighter and more neutral than you think it is. This will enhance the feeling of space.

Dress in layers. The weather can be deceiving. It might be cold in one area and hot in another.

If you’re new to painting outside, get to know any new equipment before arriving at the convention. Make sure you set up your easel a number of times to make it easier when you’re out painting.

canvas, 24 x 24 in. My favorite painting location is Leiper’s Fork, TN, and its surrounding area. This location has everything — the perfect combination of bustling historic village charm and wide open bucolic spaces. Leiper’s Creek runs through the area, providing more interest.

Tennessee is super green, especially in spring. Don’t go overboard on “tubed” greens. Mix natural ones using ultramarine blue and cad yellow light plus varying touches of violet or orange. Placed next to grayed violets, your greens will be perfect.

Mountain mist and early morning clouds can really punch depth and drama into your painting by reinforcing the heights of the highlands. Block these shapes and the corresponding shadows in early, as they will not stick around long.

Don’t take your paints in your backpack. Load your palette before you go out to a painting location. Bears know food is in a backpack, and they don’t know the difference between food and paint — believe me, I know!

Don’t take snacks in your backpack — see above.

If you encounter a bear, blow the whistle you were smart enough to hang around your neck, yell, and wave your arms. Back away slowly (never run) from your gear and backpack.

Respect nature! Don’t approach wildlife. Respect the distance the park suggests for each animal.

The Oconaluftee River flows right beside U.S. Route 441 just outside Cherokee. This river provides lots of beautiful scenic views that can be accessed from the pull-offs on 441.

Little River is one of my favorite places to paint in the Smokies. It winds along the Little River Gorge Road. This scene was painted early one morning, as the sun breached the mountain to light up the distant trees.

There is a feeling of anticipation in the air preceding the first day of the 4th Annual New Bern Plein Air Festival on May 12, 2024. This eight-day festival showcases 35 nationally and globally acclaimed plein air artists competing to capture the beauty of this historic riverfront city. Artists will also paint in the maritime village of Beaufort, home of the North Carolina Maritime Museum, and in Oriental, the sailing capital of North Carolina. Nearby Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico counties also offer enticing vistas.

Historic New Bern Farmers Market will be the official festival headquarters with demonstrations, workshops, and art sales. Shanna Kunz of Utah, a Signature member of Oil Painters of America, and James Richards of Georgia, regarded as one of the top oil painters in the nation, will conduct workshops.

The plein air festival brings the community together as local residents house participating artists and serve as volunteers. Attendees will have opportunities to meet the artists with the use of a real-time mobile app showing the locations of the painters. Participating artists will complete about 400 paintings in competition for Best of Show and other awards. But, Durre Waseem, a participating artist, observes, “Although we are in competition, we are not competitive.” The artists support each other “like a family” and learn from each other.

The painting opportunities seem endless. New Bern was the first state capital and second-oldest European town in North Carolina. With its gracious historical district, New Bern provides a prime opportunity for artists interested in architectural cityscapes. This city is also the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola, and visitors can go to Bradham’s Pharmacy to drink a Pepsi while learning about local history. The small town of Beaufort exudes Old World Southern charm and is steeped in maritime history and world-class fishing. From Beaufort, one has access to boundless natural beauty. A short boat ride away, horses frolic on the breathtaking island of Shackleford Banks. Oriental, nestled within the inner banks of the Neuse River, offers historical walking tours, biking, and art galleries.

With the rise in global tourism, the plein air movement has flourished. Potentially painting on a bed of oyster shells under a Carolina blue sky is truly the essence of tranquility for participating artists. The world is their oyster with so many inspiring vistas from which to choose. But the question remains: Which artist will uncover the coveted pearl, the Best of Show Koffenberger award?
