rt schools, workshops, and ateliers have always been important to artists striving to meet others with a shared passion and to learn new methods and principles. That was especially true for women artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the painters who made names for themselves at this time was Colorado artist Helen Henderson Chain, who founded the first art school in Denver, in 1877. A fervent plein air painter, she often took her students into the Rocky Mountains to paint directly from nature. Today, artists looking for a way to reinvigorate their process or capture a more authentic, spontaneous response to their subject have a range of opportunities to choose from. Numerous prominent painters are happy One of the first artists to exhibit paintings to pass along their knowledge in workshops that last of the New Mexico pueblo at the National anywhere from three to 14 days, with the opportunity Academy of Design in New York, Helen to travel within the United States or abroad. Most often, Henderson Chain was considered to be these workshops include painting demonstrations by among the most important artists of the instructor, one-on-one assistance, and critiques of the Western landscape. Art schools and ateliers present a more formal approach, typically with a longer commitment. Historically, ateliers put a strong emphasis on learning to draw well, focusing on still life or human anatomy. The attention to drawing remains, but many of today’s ateliers also address the landscape and its recurring forms. Generally, students work alongside masters in their studios for years to hone their skills. No matter which opportunity you’re considering, it’s important to do your research. Find out as much as you can about the qualities the instructor emphasizes in his or her own work, as well as their teaching style — do they primarily like to lecture or demo for the class, or do they also offer individual advice to students as the participants work on their own paintings? What is the daily routine — how much time each day is allotted for the students to work on their own pieces? If plein air experience is a priority for you, how much time is spent outdoors? What have past students said about the experience? Artists never stop learning. Each new painting brings new discoveries. On the pages that follow, we’ve compiled myriad opportunities for you to take the first (or next) step on your painting journey. You’re sure to find one or more workshops or classes that are right for you. KELLY KANE Editor-in-Chief PleinAir Magazine

13 WAYS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF ANY PAINTING WORKSHOP A workshop or class is an investment in yourself and your paintings. This popular instructor shares his tips for how you can maximize the experience and reap the greatest rewards afterward. ——— BY JOHN HUGHES ———

T

aking art workshops is one of the best ways for students to gain knowledge to hone their painting skills. There is really nothing like a week or two of intensive study with an artist whose work you admire and want to learn from. Certainly other methods have their merits — reading art books and watching videos, along with the myriad of modern cyber-learning platforms available today — but actually going to the source and interacting face to face is a special experience that is hard to beat. Quite frankly, learning to paint well is the result of years of dedicated study, time commitment, and monetary expense, and you don’t want to waste these precious efforts and resources! Anyone unwilling or unable to put in the required work will most likely fall short of their intended goal of making progress. But mere attendance at these events, without a real plan of attack, is not enough. Students often take advantage of these special opportunities, then return home only to paint the same way they have in the past. Why is this? The answer is that they don’t incorporate what they have learned in the workshop into their daily practice, and this is unfortunate. It could be that these artists just don’t have a method for learning that works on a practical level. I have put together a list of best practices for workshop participants to consider in order to get the most out of their experience: 1. Don’t just attend a workshop. Go with the goal of learning as much as possible during the time you have with your instructor. 2. Write up a list of skills and knowledge you are deficient in, and make an honest effort to improve your understanding during the workshop. 3. Be prepared to learn. Keep in mind that although it is the instructor’s responsibility to come prepared to teach, it is your responsibility to come prepared to learn.

John Hughes demonstrates his process for students in his summer class.

4. Take notes and refer back to them over the next several weeks, months, or even years. After the workshop is over and you are back home, review your notes. If they are handwritten, type them over for review while they are still fresh in your mind. 5. Try to use what you learn while you are in the workshop. If the gains you make academically don’t translate into practice, chances are you will lose that knowledge. 6. After you leave the workshop, incorporate what you want to use and leave the rest. You may not want to use everything your instructor taught you, due to your own artistic tastes, but at least you will have experienced it. 7. Go easy on yourself. Learning new techniques and approaches often places students outside their comfort zone, especially during workshops. But that is OK — and actually desirable. Remember the old saying “No pain, no gain”? That is often very true. 8. Try to see the big picture and how this particular instructor’s teaching style fits into general painting knowledge. Always look for the universal principles being taught. Different teachers have different ways of doing things, but trust me, there is a common thread that runs through all these methods at art workshops; don’t be thrown by an instructor’s unique personality or teaching style. The following are three common threads that are embedded in most approaches to painting. You may just need to read between the lines to recognize them: Understanding how light works Studying design principles Knowledge of your tools 9. Don’t spin your wheels during painting sessions at art workshops by being disorganized. It’s very difficult for any instructor to help you if you lack organization at your painting station. Arrange your paints and all of your tools so that you are

Aha Moments We asked members of the Dreamlineartists Facebook group to share the biggest aha moments they’ve experienced at a plein air workshop or art class.

doing the least amount of reaching and bending during your painting time. Also, have enough of what you need to work, and have it accessible. I can’t count the number of times I have gone up to a student’s easel and tried to find a brush, paper towel, trash bag, or you name it, and they were nowhere to be found. If you find yourself becoming frustrated while you are working, it may just be that you are disorganized. Before attending a workshop, set up your gear and make sure it meets these requirements for success. 10. Keep your mixing area clean, and have enough paint on the palette. An instructor can’t help you with your painting when you don’t have the basic colors ready to go — red, yellow, blue, and white, at a minimum. 11. Use the right tools for the job (e.g., bristle brushes for oils and synthetic brushes for acrylics, generally speaking). Also, once a brush has outlived its usefulness, throw it away and replace it with something that actually has the ability to spread paint. 12. Dress for success when outdoors. Plan for the weather and other conditions, shade your eyes from the sun with a good hat that has a brim, and don’t keel over from lack of water or food. Take care of yourself; you’ll paint better as a result. 13. Be open to new ideas at art workshops, and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. A workshop experience should be fun and relaxing, as well as productive. And remember, progress often comes in small increments. Be happy with the strides you make, no matter how large or small. JOHN HUGHES teaches landscape painting classes for Salt Lake Community College and the Scottsdale Artists’ School, along with private art workshops and classes.

“I once said to an instructor, ‘I can paint horses, but not trees.’ When she replied, ‘Either you can paint or you can’t,’ it felt like a gut punch! But it was also an incredibly enlightening moment for me. No more silly excuses. Now I know it’s just values, shapes, edges, and colors.” — Stella Purdy “Rose Frantzen said, ‘Painting is an artifact; you experience the beauty of it with all your senses. We’re using the sense of sight at an elevated level, and the residual effect is all our senses get better, giving us a doorway to being more present!’” — Ginny Good “I had just started painting again after a 20-plus-year hiatus, and took a workshop from Greg LaRock. The topic of visual atmosphere came up, and he talked about how colors lighten up and gray out with distance. During a demonstration, he pointed to some rocks that would become part of the background and said, ‘I know those rocks look dark to everyone. But to create distance, you have to exaggerate and make it up.’ He proceeded to paint a beautiful seascape, complete with atmosphere and rocks that were painted with a grayed hue and value much lighter than they actually appeared in person. They were completely believable and poetic. Lesson learned.” — Karen Wadsworth “I recently took a one-day workshop from Dawn Whitelaw on designing and making small preliminary sketches. ‘Instead of rules, let design lead you,’ she said. ‘We are all good designers. Let your inner chooser lead you. Your style is rooted in what you pick to paint.’ I immediately felt free to follow my instincts. And for the first time, I became convinced of the value of doing preliminary sketches when I’m on site for a plein air painting — even though I’d heard it a million times before. It was such a valuable lesson, and we didn’t even touch our paints!” — Cindy Rutherford

“My aha moment came in July 2019, during a live drawing workshop in Scotland with Juliette Aristides. I had never drawn while standing at an easel, with a live model and a timer ticking. Juliette showed me why everyone was holding their pencil or brush with arms straight out to measure proportions. All this time, I had no clue!” — Linda Marie Crabb “I took a plein air-to-studio workshop in 2012 with Keith Bond in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He said he doesn’t copy a scene, but rather tries to capture the essence of the place, and that sometimes that means repositioning a tree, diverting a river, or even moving a mountain. Aha!” — Meg Ann “I took a workshop with Joyce Ahrens, whose tagline is ‘It’s just paint. Nobody dies.’ I used to approach every blank canvas with angst, so that was the perfect message for me. I still remember her words every time I begin a challenging piece.” — Linda Powell “Kathie Odom struck a comforting chord with me when she said, ‘If it gets the message across, it’s good enough.’ Too often, when we strive for perfection, the message gets lost. When in doubt, go for the message.” — Tamara Keiper “At PleinAir Live, Jean Stern talked about painting the colors you feel, not just the colors you see. He gave me permission to express, rather than simply copy. And during Realism Live, Marc Dalessio observed that since it is difficult to paint shapes perfectly, why not ‘err on the side of beauty.’ This particular revelation seems like good advice for life well beyond art.” — Sue Ginter

AINTING LIKE A MASTER Nikolai BLOKHIN

Kathleen HUDSON

Kathleen Hudson shows you how to accurately capture a beautiful storm — a scene where the atmosphere changes in mere seconds and the shifting shadows play tricks on your eyes. Watch and learn as Kathleen expertly paints the light and movement of the heavy atmosphere as the storm travels briskly across a wide vista. Such a painting takes special preparation and skilled brushwork and Kathleen is the perfect instructor to demonstrate the energy and excitement that comes with a powerful storm.

For the first time, Russian artist Nikolai Blokhin has recorded his tightly-held techniques of 19th century Russian masters, giving you the opportunity to apply these age-old traditions in your own artwork. As Nikolai works through a large demonstration painting, Old Harlequin, you’ll feel as though you’re present in his grand studio space as he sorts through piles of paint tubes and searches his vast collection of brushes for just the right one. You’ll feel so close to Nikolai and his work that you’ll want to have the final painting for yourself, just to revel in this feeling forever.

Rose FRANTZEN

One look at Rose Frantzen’s work and you’ll get a sense of what makes her one of today’s most unique artists. Electrifying expressions balanced with mastered disciplines, Rose is highly respected for creating thought-provoking artwork that thrills her followers and pleases her loyal collectors. Freely sharing her fascinating approach to painting, let Rose help you find your own style and voice. Soon, you’ll be spontaneously painting from the depths of your soul.
