Call for Papers: Historical Research and Delpher [Voor de Nederlandse call, zie p. 3] TS. Tijdschrift voor Tijdschriftstudies/Journal for the Study of Periodical Media is a bilingual (Dutch/English) interdisciplinary journal focused on every aspect of periodicals and periodical media, such as newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc., from the Early Modern period to the present. TS is peer-reviewed and published open access. For a special issue concerning Delpher (Dutch database access to digitized historical text collections), we welcome contributions from Humanities scholars (including, but not limited to Dutch Studies, History, Art and Cultural History, Media Studies, Periodical Studies, Communication Studies & Journalism) that reflect on, are (partly) grounded in research carried out with, or otherwise engage Delpher’s digital collections. In recent years the digital humanities have been a subject of fervent methodological debates, and open access digital newspapers archives and digital text collections are particularly avidly discussed. In this special issue of TS on Delpher we intend to take such discussions further by looking at what kind of research is produced when using a specific digital archive and the newspapers, magazines and periodicals, and news items it contains. What kind of impact does a tool such as Delpher have on research questions and methodological strategies with regards to the study of periodical media? As far as the actual research goes, are there improvements, challenges, etc. in comparison to making use of analogue material? Are we asking new or different questions, obtaining new or different results, setting new or different aims? Or perhaps, the same as before?

We welcome reflective essays (3,000 words) and research articles (6,000 words) that present interesting finds, innovative methods, and/or critical reflections on Delpher and its digital collections and on the research results obtained with Delpher. Contributions can be submitted in both Dutch and English, and may concern all subjects and the entire time-span of Delpher (Early Modern period twentieth century). We encourage researchers to reflect from their own disciplinary perspective on the question how the digital remediation of newspapers and periodicals – the fact that they can be accessed through digital interfaces instead of their original paper form – has influenced their research. Besides articles or essays that are concerned with, or entirely based on (research proceed from sources contained in), Delpher, we additionally welcome articles and essays positioning Delpher within wider and other collections of (digital and non-digital) sources and archives. TS offers excellent opportunities for scholars wishing to publish (initial) results. We are committed to providing equal opportunities to junior and senior scholars; the editors are willing to assist junior researchers (early PhD/RMA-students) in the process of making their articles fit for publication. Please send a proposal of no more than 400 words to tijdschriftstudies@let.ru.nl before 20 May, 2015. If accepted, the final paper should be between 3,000 words (a reflective essay) and 6,000 words (a full research article), and will have to be completed by September 2015. Call for Papers: Historisch onderzoek en Delpher TS > Tijdschrift voor Tijdschriftstudies is een interdisciplinair tweetalig (Nederlands/Engels) tijdschrift dat zich richt op onderzoek naar elk aspect van periodieken en periodieke media, zoals kranten, tijdschriften, blogs, etc. vanaf de vroegmoderne tijd tot het heden. TS is een peer-reviewed, online en open access gepubliceerd tijdschrift. Voor een themanummer over Delpher (de online toegang tot gedigitaliseerd historisch tekstmateriaal) zijn we op zoek naar bijdragen vanuit verschillende disciplines (zoals Nederlands, Cultuur- en Kunstgeschiedenis, Mediastudies, Tijdschriftstudies, Communicatiewetenschap en gerelateerde vakgebieden) die (voor een deel) gebaseerd zijn op, reflecteren op, of gebruik maken van Delphers digitale collecties. De laatste jaren heeft er een uitgebreid methodologisch debat plaatsgevonden over digital humanities in het algemeen en digitale kranten- en tijdschriftenarchieven in het bijzonder. In dit themanummer van TS over Delpher hopen we deze discussie naar een hoger plan te tillen door te kijken hoe onderzoekers een specifiek digitaal archief, en de kranten, tijdschriften en nieuwsberichten daarbinnen, in de praktijk gebruiken. Wat voor invloed heeft een tool als Delpher nu op onderzoeksvragen en -methoden binnen het veld van periodical studies? En zijn er in de digitale onderzoekspraktijk specifieke uitdagingen dan wel verbeteringen te signaleren in vergelijking met onderzoek naar analoog materiaal? Stellen we nieuwe of andere vragen, verkrijgen we nieuwe of andere onderzoeksresultaten, stellen we ons nieuwe of andere doelen? Of misschien wel dezelfde als voorheen? Bijdragen (in Nederlands of Engels) kunnen zowel de vorm van een volledig onderzoeksartikel (6000 woorden) als reflectief essay (3000 woorden) hebben en kunnen betrekking hebben op de gehele door Delpher beslagen periode (vroegmoderne tijd tot heden) en onderwerpen. We moedigen auteurs aan om vanuit hun specifieke discipline te reflecteren op de vraag hoe de digitale remediation van kranten en periodieken hun onderzoek heeft be誰nvloed. Naast artikelen die specifiek op Delpher of bronnen daarin vindbaar betrekking 3
hebben, ontvangen we ook graag voorstellen voor artikelen en essays die Delpher positioneren ten opzichte van andere digitale en niet-digitale bronnencollecties en archieven. TS biedt zeer goede mogelijkheden voor onderzoekers om (initiĂŤle) resultaten te publiceren en biedt gelijke kansen aan junior en senior onderzoekers. De redacteuren helpen beginnende onderzoekers (onderzoeksmasterstudenten en promovendi) graag bij het geschikt maken voor publicatie van hun artikelen/essays. Voorstellen (max 400 woorden) voor artikelen en essays kunnen voor 20 mei 2015 gestuurd worden naar tijdschriftstudies@let.ru.nl. Geaccepteerde voorstellen moeten voor september 2015 zijn uitgewerkt in een onderzoeksartikel (6000 woorden) of reflectief essay (3000 woorden).
