From things as large as trips and experiences growing up, to even just a brief sight or even a specific toy, sometimes the smallest things can shape who you are and what you want as you grow older. In this case, for our friend Marty Green, it was the memory of a work truck his father drove when he was a child.

Marty is no newbie to custom cars and trucks and has built some incredible machines through the years, but he was admittedly new to the C10 scene and itching to jump right into the deep end. After hunting and looking around for the right fit for a while, the opportunity came at the Goodguys show in Charlotte. Marty came across a spotless, all original big block truck and knew he had to have it as his own. He and the owner of the truck came to an agreement, and the pickup came back to Ohio with Marty, now the proud owner.

On his way home with the truck, he made a pit stop and see his friend Chris Porter of Porter’s Toy Barn. Marty originally only stopped by to show his friend the Chevy and have him fix a few small details on the truck – but we all know how this goes, right? One thing led to another, and Marty ended up riding in a LSA-powered C10 build, and it kinda ruins the whole “big block thing” for him permanently. To put it in the words of Tim Taylor from “Home Improvement,” Marty needed “More Power” *cue three grunts*. With that, Marty and his friend Chris Porter were off to the races, figuratively at least.

Canada, he found it difficult to find the truck to match his taste. Making a few trips to the States, Rob found exactly what he was looking for in Texas: a 1959 Ford F-250. The truck had just the right patina for Rob’s taste, but it wasn’t rotted in the wrong places, and the panels were straight considering the truck’s age and history.

Once Rob had the truck in his possession, he began formulating a plan. Rob contacted many shops but had a hard time nailing one down. With a little more searching, Rob found Farm Truck Racing (FTR) in Azle, Texas, to tackle the build. FTR is owned and operated by Dennis Winegarner. Dennis has built an extensive resume with patina builds, Coyote swaps, Crown Vic swaps, and a multitude of other builds that are out on the road racking up miles.

Starting with a solid foundation, Rob had a No Limit Engineering chassis ordered and delivered to FTR. The powdercoated chassis had all the goodies, including the No Limit independent suspension with tubular upper and lower control arms, adjustable coilover shocks, and power rack-andpinion steering. Out back, the NL chassis includes the infamous Fat Bar four bar rear suspension with adjustable coilovers as well.

With the foundation set, it was time to start fitting the cab, bed, and front end onto the chassis. This is where it gets very interesting. While Rob wanted the perfect patina truck, he did not want any aftermarket sheetmetal or faux patina.

That said, the cab floor, bed floor, and wheel tubs in the bed were going to be a challenge. The cab and bed floor had considerable rot. Not only that, but the wheelwells in the bed were beat up, and they needed to be raised to clear the raised suspension and larger tires. FTR had to find a donor cab that matched the truck. Scouring the forums and social media platforms, FTR was able to find two additional cabs and three additional beds to accomplish the task.

After cutting out the old floor and firewall, FTR masterfully installed the floor and firewall out of the donor cab into the original with no painting or aftermarket sheetmetal. Moving to the bed, FTR was able to take the bedsides with wheelwells intact

Rob and Dennis decided to use NOS rubber flooring in lieu of the typical carpet covering for the floor. They felt this maintained the “work truck” vibe the F-250 originally had. For Rob’s listening pleasure, FTR had the original radio fitted with modern electronics by R and R Vintage Radio. The ear massage comes from Focal speakers hidden in just the right places.

Since its completion, The Frog, as Rob has named it, has attended a few local North Texas shows including the Texoma F-100 Roundup where it won best of show. The most popular modification is always a new set of wheels and tires, but to make enough room for the ideal set of rubber, upgrading your truck’s suspension will be necessary. Our factory fresh 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport was no exception. While we didn’t have anything crazy or over the top for the truck, we did want to change up the wheel selection, as well as add a set of more capable, beefier tires. To properly fit the set of nearly 33-inch tires, however, the front suspension would need to be lifted a couple of inches to match the rear. After a few quick phone calls, we were able to put a game plan into place and line up all the parts we’d need for the quick reconstruction.

First, we contacted Crown Suspension in Brea, California, to secure the company’s 2.5-inch front strut spacer leveling kit, which would boost the Tacoma’s front end the perfect height to match the back. The kit itself is extremely budget-friendly and will maintain the truck’s factory ride quality once installed. Crown Suspension’s own Erik “Wolf” Rodriguez extended an invitation to us to bring our ’22 Toyota pickup into the shop for a full installation, which took just less than two hours to complete. We documented Wolf’s work here to show you how you can take care of the job in the comfort of your own garage or driveway.

The end result is a brand new pickup with a much more aggressive look and added real world function that can be used when the mild off-road scenario presents itself. Best of all, the truck was taken care of in a single business day well before dinner, which left us some time to head out to Joshua Tree to explore the desert for the rest of the day.

Since Mark was interested in keeping his F-250 looking as factory as possible, he did leave the suspension alone. It wasn’t lowered or lifted one inch in either direction, which is just the ride height he has grown accustomed to over the years.

Mark has also grown to lean on the community of other Bumpside aficionados for additional help and guidance throughout the build.

“I’ve always been a Ford guy since I was young, but they have always been few and far between in my area, which is predominately packed with Chevy trucks”, he admits. “Once I found all the various Ford groups on Facebook (Bump Life in particular), I was able to discuss my passion with a much larger group than ever, which has been a great source of encouragement these last few years.”This straightforward yet killer F-250 build is proof positive that anyone can build a legitimate show truck that can also double as a reliable tow pig. Sure, Mark had a stroke of luck on his side, but the rest of his success is due in part to thorough research, setting an attainable goal and networking with others interested in trucks just like his. 800 trucks in attendance this year, the influence that Los Chevroleteros has shown the community through chopped up, bagged, and resto-mod trucks is definitely bringing the heat and making an impact. This year we even found a a bagged-suspension, Viper-powered Chevy Apache that left nothing stock and brought all the shock. A few steps further we ran across a father/son Squarebody project that was completely rebuilt from the ground up. These two builds were the crown jewels at the show with all sorts of secret backyard projects making appearances, which definitely kept the show interesting every step you took.

Thousands of people came out for the weekend, and food vendors were packed with the most amazing flavors this culture has to offer with an aroma in the air that brought people back into the fairgrounds all day long. Vendors and shops pushing their newest custom kits and rare finds from the US were on sale, which made everyone feel part of this tight-knit community. There was a huge sense of passion for the truck enthusiast community going on at the show, and Los Chevroleteros hopes its future shows inspire everyone to keep the culture moving and growing.

This is how Joey Loiacano seized the chance to take ownership of a truck that he has had his eye on since he was a kid.

“My truck obsession started way back when I would see this particular ’71 Chevy drive by my house everyday,” he reminisces. “The man driving would always wave and beep on his way to his business—a body shop that was located at the end of my street. As I got older, I would ride my bike over to the shop to look at the truck and all the other cool cars that were there.” SOME OF THE

“Back in the early ’90s, I was driving a ’71 Chevelle, so I took it over to Stan’s shop for it to be painted,” Joey says. “When I would tell him that I was almost ready to buy his truck, he would just

“Of course when she put the cars up for sale, all the Cadillacs sold first,” Joey remembers. “The truck was the last of his vehicles left, and I still consider myself very lucky to have been able to purchase the exact pickup I had wanted to drive before I was even old enough to drive it.”

Joey was always hoping for a shot at buying Stan’s old pickup, he was fearful that his chance would only come under the worst of circumstances. Stan was getting up there in age, and in 1996 he passed away, leaving all of his possessions to his daughter.

The friendly gentleman in question was Stan Schultz. He owned and operated the neighborhood body shop and was a big collector of old Cadillac cars, but the only vehicle parked on his property that Joey ever cared about looking at was that old pickup.

The C10 was originally powered by a 350 engine, but Joey opted to purchase a brand new 350 crate engine from a local Chevy dealer instead of rebuilding the old tired mill. He didn’t toss the old unit since he still had some unfinished business with it.

“I pulled the factory carburetor and had it rebuilt by Peter French at Lee Electric who is a Quadrajet genius,” he admits. “I also had the factory exhaust manifolds Jet-Hot

It was at this point when Joey began altering the C10’s factory frame. Instead of coating the entire chassis in regular paint, though, Joey’s good friend John Del Monte from Best Products convinced him to use powdercoat instead. Not only was the frame coated, but so were both axles after they were rebuilt, as well as the front and rear springs that were actually

Everything else kind of snowballed from here.”

With the Chevy’s drivetrain well taken care of, Joey could then focus on the exterior, which he had already been slowly chipping away at over the years. As the owner and operator of Joey’s Auto Detail Shop, he does make it a point to attend the annual SEMA event to stay up to date on the parts and products in the marketplace in order to keep his business on the cutting edge. “Aside from the 2020 show, I’ve been in attendance at SEMA for 26 straight years,” Joey says. “In that time, I’ve collected fenders, doors, box sides, a cab with no dings—everything to put together an entire an all-GM West Coast body together! Once I had what I needed, Duncan Mobile Wash baking-soda blasted everything before it was sent to John Ramsey at John’s Auto Restoration for the royal treatment.”

When the dust settled, it took Joey nearly 15 years and cost him roughly $85,000 to get the C10 to the level it’s on now, but he really was in no hurry to get it done. He had waited so long just to hold the keys to the truck, anything extra was just a bonus.

“The best times of this journey has been able to spend time with my dad working on the truck and cruising to shows together” he says. “I will admit that I could’ve done it faster and cheaper, but I was meticulous with the original proper year coded GM parts that have been assembled throughout the truck, which was also an enjoyable part of the prolonged build process.”
