ELL, WE DID IT. For the first time ever in my lifetime, we traveled five days over four states covering nearly 2,000 miles on the Hot Rod Power Tour. It was quite the experience, and we learned a lot about ourselves and our trucks. We met some amazing people along the way, and we’re proud to say that the American automotive enthusiast lifestyle is alive and well throughout the east. Flip over to page 86 to see our coverage from this cool event, and find out if our Chevy Squarebody completed the competition. In this book, we also highlight a new event for our audience, Mother Road Mayhem. It was a fun event that brought out a bunch of great looking rides that we haven’t seen in the past. Six separate feature trucks are on center stage in this September issue, including the remarkable Seton you saw on the cover. We know you all like tech, so we stuffed three separate installations throughout the next 120 pages that should motivate you to start wrenching on your ride—all new Squarebody interior with a cool plaid design, some mini-truck upgrades to project Lucid Dreams, and a complete build breakdown on our charity project for Mission 22 known as Sergeant Square. Still not enough? Read about the top 10 LS questions we found on the web, which our expert answers with great detail. Finally, I’ll look into the future with some electrical vehicle swaps that still don’t have mainstream support. It’s a great issue that we will be one for the record books, and without a doubt a front runner for truck of the year. How’s your project going? We would love to know. Send us an email and let’s chat! ITWASQUITETHEEXPERIENCE, AND WE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT OURSELVES AND OUR TRUCKS.WE MET SOMEAMAZINGPEOPLEALONGTHEWAY, AND WE’RE PROUD TO SAY THAT THE AMERICAN AUTOMOTIVE ENTHUSIAST LIFESTYLE IS ALIVE AND WELL THROUGHOUT THE EAST.

The center section is a direct carryover from TCI’s Pro Touring chassis. This 12-piece center section keeps the frame from twisting no matter how much horsepower you throw at it, while still leaving plenty of room to run a 3-inchdiameter exhaust. Fully boxed frame rails are stepped up 8 inches and C-notched to accommodate that extra low, slammed stance. Extra-long and beefy 1¼-inch 4-link bars are coupled with Currie Johnny Joints to aid in unbound articulation, offer less pinion angle change during suspension cycling, and minimize forward movement of axle centerline at full compression. All of this is suspended by rollover sleeve style Firestone airbags and Ridetech single adjustable shocks. These C10 Grounded Chassis come fully plumbed with ¼-inch stainless air lines along with 3/16-inch brake lines and hoses. Just add your own air management system to complete the build.

All TCI Engineering products come with a six-year, 60,000-mile warranty on wear and tear items such as bushings and ball joints, and a lifetime warranty on any item built in house by TCI Engineering such as link bars, control arms, spindles, and crossmembers!

Widened front frame rails allow more room for headers and steering components, and a narrowed rear frame section allows for outboard-mounted shocks and wider tires. The front consists of a trusted and track-proven Pro Touring IFS system. Coilover mounts are replaced with airbag mounts, and then outboard shock mounts are added to accept the Ridetech single adjustable shocks. Heavy duty tubular control arms, 1-inch anti-sway bar, and rack-andpinion steering along with custom modular spindles provide plenty of brake options.

Justin Griffin’s 3500 dually is exactly that. With a slammed stance, radical paint job, and wheels that chop the light rolling down the highway, it looks cool, but don’t let this thing fool you. It was built to work.

FAMILY HAULER .24. SEPTEMBER 2022 | STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

HE SHOW SCENE IS FILLED WITH AMAZING BUILDS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY. Some sit on stands so fans can view every last detail— front, back, and side to side. Some go on the occasional evening cruise to attend a show or event. Others simply drive and look cool doing it.

OBS BROTHERS Justin has been obsessed with the automotive lifestyle since a young age. His father, who was engulfed in the street rod scene, influenced him and his interest in the hobby. Justin’s first car was a 1970 Chevelle SS, which he still owns to this very day.

T

STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022 .25.

Growing up, Justin always included his younger brother, Eli, in his backyard building projects. They made many memories while busting knuckles and building dream trucks as yard warriors. Together, they decided to buy a shop where they could build full time. With help from their parents to get them off the ground, the Griffin brothers put in the work of making a name for themselves. They gained experience and confidence, feeling proud of their work and excited to make a future with their business. In 2008, they broke ground on a new facility, and Twin States Rod Shop was born. The brothers always had a passion for full-size OBS trucks, and so the first thing to come out of their garage was a ’95 extended cab. Inspired by trucks across the scene, including Krew Kut, it’s easy to see they love what they do.

CRUISER RETURNS

A previously owned truck inspired Justin to build this killer 3500. Purchased brand new back in 2000, he later installed a Cadillac front clip. It was by far a favorite, but he sold it to do grownup stuff and focus on the family.

Now that Justin’s kids are older and having a blast with dad cruising to shows, the time was right to bring back his favorite cruiser—but with that OBHestyle.stuck with making a family hauler he could put to work, but also one that still broke a few necks; a truck that has the drivability of a clean cruiser and tow pig, but not one that’s full-blown wild. Needless to say, the Griffin crew pulled it off.

They kept the air-ride clean and simple with full Ridetech and a 4-link suspension. A set of custom cut Michael’s Trucks semi wheels were installed with some serious rubber to keep things smooth and reliable. They topped it off with a clean bed floor and a reliable 454 powerplant. This thing is a driver, period.

Looking back at his truck today, Justin loves the direction it took. He’s enjoyed countless trips pulling the enclosed trailer loaded up for the weekend festivities and car show events across the country with all the power and space needed to enjoy the trip. I’d say mission accomplished.

The interior has subtle mods that keep the traditional look, but with a twist. The Snowden leather bench seats front and rear match the custom Tuxedo carpet and painted panels. This gave the dually the look and feel Justin wanted while keeping a durable interior to handle the kiddoes. Not stopping there, the dually was sent off to paint. Eli laid the foundation for the Mad Pinstriper Pat Maxwell, who added some killer flames that appear to float on that cool gray basecoat. They then sealed the deal with a dose of clear. This pavement yacht was ready to roll.

ENJOYING THE RIDE

From a young man wrenching on hot rods to a flamed-out 3500 dually killin’ the streets and flexing with a trailer behind it, Justin built a truck that hangs at shows, cruises like a daily, and works like a horse.

HE WANTED TO JOIN THE MORE EXCLUSIVE PRO TOURINGCLUB,WHERETHE WHEELS ARE WIDER AND THE SUSPENSION IS TIGHTER.

T HERE’S A DECISION WE MUST ALL MAKE WHEN STARTING A NEW TRUCK PROJECT. Keep it as original and unmolested as possible, restore it, or modify the hell out of it. Most of us end up somewhere in the middle, creating what is known as a “restomod,” which is basically a melding of old and new school aesthetics.

Steve Jones wanted to build an awesome truck but stopping at the “restomod” level wasn’t enough for him. No, he wanted to join the more exclusive Pro Touring club, where the wheels are wider and the suspension is tighter. The first step, though, was to find the truck. “This was an old farm truck from West Texas that had seen better days,” Steve says. “I have always loved the late ’60s era C10s. The hood and cab body lines are so cool to “Theme.idea of driving on the Southern California freeways in an old truck helped me decide that this truck needed to be a Pro Touring build,” Steve continues. “The Pro Touring build would give this truck all the modern performance it needed while keeping as much of the classic look.”

PPEpower.com 725.238.2002

“The challenge with a Pro Touring build is not going overboard and losing the original truck feel and staying true to the truck’s history,” Steve says. He soon found Funkhouser Racecars, a San Diego-based fabrication shop that builds everything from drag cars to, well, Pro Touring trucks. Liking what he saw while visiting the shop, he commissioned Funkhouser to take the lead on the build. Before long, Steve’s C10 was sporting a new ‘bagged suspension with Air Lift Dominator air springs and Ridetech/ Fox shocks, controlled by an AccuAir eLevel system and Viair 444C compressors. Hot Rods by Boyd came through with a custom set of HR-99 billet wheels in 20x8.5 and 20x12 sizes, which were fitted to Pirelli P-Zero 245/40R20 and 335/30R20 sticky meats. Peeking out from behind the wheel spokes are brakes from Wilwood. Of course, all that rear tire tread would be a total waste without the right stuff under the hood, which is why Funkhouser Racecars prepped a potent 5.3L LS with a Summit Racing intake manifold, fabricated air

With this prime candidate now delivered to SoCal, Steve began the search for a shop to bring his ideas to life. He knew that he didn’t want the truck to lose its soul, but he also wanted to improve it in every way possible.

DEADPOOL intake tubing, Hedman headers, and a custom stainless Magnaflow exhaust leading out to the rear of the truck. A Holley Sniper EFI system was then installed to bring the engine to life, and a 4L60E from Ramona Transmissions was bolted on to wrap up the drivetrain.

POLISHING THE C10

Once the C10 was operating under its own power, attention was turned to finishing up the cosmetics. The truck received widened rear tubs, tucked bumpers, and even a custom roll pan behind the rear bumper before the rest of the sheetmetal was prepped for paint. Nick Battaglia at Loose Cannon Customs then took over for a bit, spraying the truck with red and black paint from BASF Glasurit materials. The final piece of the puzzle was getting the interior dialed in, which was done over at Old Town Upholstery. The Glide Engineering bench was covered with black leather, and custom kick panels were built to house JL Audio speakers. Steve wanted a little extra “bump” in his ride, so a custom subwoofer enclosure was also built and installed behind the seat. An Alpine iLX-W650 was then installed, along with a Nardi mahogany wheel and Dakota Digital VHX gauges. To say that this is just a truck to Steve is nowhere near accurate, as he grew up around the ’60-’66 body“Asstyle.akid we had a ’66 C10 for a shop truck, and I always loved it,” heNowsays.that his truck is complete (except for the possibility of adding a Magnuson supercharger), Steve and his wife Nikki are enjoying behind-the-wheel time as much as possible, which is pretty much 365 days a year in sunny California!

WORDS BY MIKE SELF PHOTOS FROM THE ST ARCHIVES T’S CRAZY TO THINK THAT THE LS ENGINE IS NOW ABOUT A QUARTER CENTURY OLD, BUT HERE WE ARE TOWARD THE TAIL END OF ITS MASS PRODUCTION. With the Gen V now in full swing and taking over every new GM engine compartment that once housed an LS, are the LS’s days as a viable swap option numbered? We certainly don’t think so, and it seems that you don’t either! Whether you’re starting out with a daily friendly 4.8L LR4 or going HAM with a 7.0L LS7, it’s hard to make a wrong decision when swapping or modding an LS-based engine. So, we’ve compiled the top 10 questions we’ve been asked about them and offer you some simple answers to hopefully enlighten and entertain.

.38. SEPTEMBER 2022 | STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

I

1 IS THE LS RELIABLE?ENGINE

We’re of the mindset that EFI is a better option 99% of the time, but if you’re swapping an LS into a classic truck and want to keep

2 WHO DESIGNED THE LS ENGINE?

STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022 .39.

3 SIZES?LSDIFFERENTAREWHATTHEENGINE

It should come as no surprise that the chief engineers of the LS were not only skilled engine designers, but lifelong gearheads as well. Ed Koerner and Tom Stephens came up with the general architecture of the LS, with design team members Alan Hayman, Jim Mazzola, Ron Sperry, Bill Compton, Brian Kaminski, Jon Lewis, Stan Turek, Don Weiderhold, and Dave Wandel contributing their expertise to one of the world’s most beloved engine platforms.

If we’re including all derivatives, the various displacements that have been available over the years include 4.3L (yup, a V-6 variant released in 2014), 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L, 6.0L, 6.2L, 6.6L, and 7.0L engines. Each of these has been refined through multiple iterations and differed depending on the application.

4 CAN AN LS ENGINE BE CARBURETED?

LS engines, like most engines, are pretty reliable as long as they’ve been properly maintained, and they’re even pretty decent when somewhat neglected! They are inherently strong, partly due to their main cap and head designs, which is why it’s not uncommon to see engines with 300,000-plus miles on them with only regular maintenance. Used, high-mileage LS-based engines are seeing large amounts of boost with very minor modifications and usually survive quite a while. So, in our opinion, yes, they’re reliable!

6

TOP 10 LS ENGINE QUESTIONS things as simple as possible, a carbureted setup may indeed be a good choice. You’ll need an aftermarket intake manifold designed for a carb, the carb itself, and an electronic ignition controller (LS-based engines don’t have a spot for a distributor and still require an ignition source for the coils). You could install a frontmounted distributor if you really wanted to, or any other multitude of things for that matter, but that’s a lot of trouble to go through to ditch the reliability of EFI. In the end, you’ll have to run your own numbers and see if this is the right move for you.

WHAT TRANSMISSION CAN BE USED WITH AN LS ENGINE? Technically, you can use just about any transmission with the use of an adapter, but luckily the list of options is long, most requiring only minor modifications. Have an old Powerglide or manual 3-speed? Yup, those’ll work with the proper spacers and hardware. So will that Turbo 350 in your uncle’s shed, or even that T-5 5-speed in that Astro at the wrecking yard. There are generally multiple options to achieve any given combination. The 4L65E and 4L80E automatics are popular choices since they are more robust than the 700R4/4L60E and are made to bolt right on to LS engines. That being said, plenty of folks have used “weaker” transmissions with success when coupled with a consistently light foot. On the manual side, T56s are the usual fare, but some opt for the beefier Tremec TKO-series transmissions. Of course, the more power and torque your engine have, the stouter you want to go. That’s where the 4L80E and 4L85E really start looking like a good idea!

If we’re talking about any LS engine ever directly offered by GM, the winner is the long-discontinued LSX454R, conservatively rated at 770 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. The most powerful LS in a production vehicle is in the upcoming 2023 Cadillac Escalade V, a 6.2-liter pushing 682 horsepower and 653 lb-ft of torque!

For many enthusiasts Art Morrison Enterprises is known primarily for its series of GT Sport chassis that provide corner-carving handling, performance and a contemporary stance with bolt-on convenience. But if you dig deeper, you’ll see that AME is also a pioneer in air suspensions dating back 30+ years when the Morrison engineering team and its suppliers developed one of the industry’s first successful classic truck/street rod air suspension packages. And continue to evolve them to this day.

The important thing to remember is that AME’s engineering and manufacturing team can design a custom chassis to your exact needs, and build it with industry-leading craftsmanship. If you want to tackle your build incrementally, AME can custom-build front and rear clips to your individual requirements.

And don’t forget that an investment in a Morrison chassis pays big dividends in performance, driving enjoyment and vehicle value.

Both 5.3L and 6.0L engines are the most popular for turbocharging since they are widely available and can support up to 1,000 horsepower with proper preparation, but we’ve pretty much seen every iteration of the LS receive boost by now, and both cathedral port and rectangular port heads flow very well under pressure.

We thought this question would be a bit more complicated to answer, but as it turns out it’s pretty straightforward! Every LS engine that came out of a passenger car had/has an aluminum block, but trucks and SUVs usually received an iron block. Notable exceptions are the LS2equipped SSR and Trailblazer SS, and L76-equipped Silverados and Sierras from 2007-2009 (the Avalanche kept the L76 through the 2013 model year). 10 WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO BUY AN LS ENGINE? Well, that depends! If shopping new, you can’t beat buying an LS through any of Chevrolet Performance’s authorized retailers, but LS-based crate engines are also available from aftermarket companies such as Edelbrock. If you’re in the market for a good used engine and want to build it yourself, your local Pick-N-Pull type place is likely the cheapest but may result in a dud unless you can inspect the engine thoroughly before buying. It may be in your best interest to purchase any available warranty on the long block. We’ve had decent luck with used engine resellers as they can usually provide a video of the engine running and will often offer a reasonable warranty. You’ll pay more up front but will receive better service than the pull-it-yourself route.

Togetherness in the Form of a ’99 Silverado WORDS BY JOHN MATA JR. PHOTOS BY MACH1 MEDIA STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022 .47.

“I knew I wanted the Silverado to be a sport truck,” says Elsayet. “I’ve always like the style of a clean, low pickup on big wheels, so that is what I was going for when I started to get to work on thisTheproject.”suspension system was

IMPROVEMENTS

“Essentially, I aimed at building this truck in the memory of my grandfather,” says Elsayet. “He didn’t get me into custom trucks or anything like that. It has always been something that I liked on my own. Once I started my family and began to place my attention towards starting a career, he pushed me to sell my ‘bagged S-10 I had at the time and spend that money on books for school. Once the chips fell into place, thanks to my wife I was able to purchase this Silverado, which I decided to dedicate to my grandfather because if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

BEGIN Elsayet purchased his Silverado truck back in 2017, and it took him about a year or so to figure out and correct all the wiring and motor issues that came with it. It had been previously ‘bagged on 22s with a cup kit in the front and a 2-link at the rear—nothing too crazy but effective.

UILDING A CUSTOM TRUCK CAN MEAN A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT FOLKS. While there is no single “right” reason to do it, Elsayet Garcia of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, was looking to focus past creating a truck that was simply just for show or cruising during the weekends. Does he plan on taking his ’99 Chevy Silverado to shows and driving it around whenever possible? Yes, of course. His real reason for building the truck, however, was to honor his family—both those who are currently here and those important members who he has lost over the years.

FAMILY FIRST the first phase of the build that Elsayet began working on, and the one that made the largest improvement on his truck’s overall looks and user friendliness. All the truck’s existing modifications were removed and tossed aside in place of a Twisted Metalworkz front end kit, as well as a Reklez Suspension 3-link rear setup complete with a monster notch kit. Air Lift 2600 Dominator ‘bags and Doetsch shocks have taken up residence at each corner to assist in providing a low stance with a great ride quality. The Concept Shop in Miami was able to pour their expertise into project to ensure everything was done right the first timeToaround.takefull advantage of the truck’s newfound ability to lay low, Elsayet asked for the ability for a set of staggered 24/26-inch wheels to be unlocked.

Elsayet’s son chose the Intro Rally wheels (nice choice, kid!), which required a 5-lug conversion to make it happen, but the extra work was totally worth it in the end. Getting the large wheel selection to fit properly was one of the most challenging aspects of the build by far, but it was the exact look they were after.

Elsayet included an AMD cowl hood, and went ahead and had the bed pockets and antenna shaved right off. While the truck is currently waiting in line for a fresh paintjob, the GM Jet Black paint has been buffed and polished to a brilliant shine to make the most of the existing factory spray job. The factory 5.3L engine was upgraded a bit to encourage better air circulation, but Elsayet really stopped and took some time to outfit the interior with a much needed overhaul. A custom bench seat from Snowden was covered in a deep burgundy vinyl material to offset the dark paint found on the exterior. Upholstery by Greg was happy to join the project, as was Chris Rawlings who cooked up custom door panels and speaker grilles for the redesign. Automotive Designs fabricated a custom sub enclosure, and a generous helping of billet accessories was peppered throughout the cab for good measure, although most eyes land on the matching Intro Rally steering wheel for obvious reasons.

“This whole process has inspired my kids to build an S-10 and a Tacoma to be their first custom trucks, so we have those to look forward to in the future,” Elsayet says. “We have a lot of great ideas for those two minis, and we are eager to enjoy more quality time together in the garage and at shows.”

FAR COMPLETEFROM

“My grandfather loved how the truck was taking shape, but he wasn’t able to see it in its final stage. He passed on March 3, 2021, and since then I have really jumped on finishing it up to honor him.”

With the Silverado currently sitting in such great condition, Elsayet will be the first to admit that the truck is far from being complete.

Even though the truck was dedicated to his grandfather, Elsayet was able to recognize the gift of being present and cherish the time working on it with his wife, kids, as well as his Aftermath Florida family as well.

MAYHEM MOTHER ROAD SECOND TIME’S A CHARM WORDS AND PHOTOS BY DAMIEN DAVIS M MANY OF US HAVE WAITED A LONG TIME FOR A CAR SHOW TO RETURN TO JOPLIN, MISSOURI. Some remember an event named SOL. It brought in mini-truckers from around the country for a weekend of shenanigans that may or not have gotten a little too wild and crazy. When I heard Keg Media was throwing Mother Road Mayhem—brought to us by the same folks behind the Orange Beach Invasion and Lifted Truck Nationals—I wasted no time getting booked for the weekend. A small-town vibe with big city rides, the show was going to be awesome. M .54. SEPTEMBER 2022 | STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

ROUTE 66 PARADE

Ranging from mini-trucks to classic hot rods, full-painted chassis lifted rides to clean daily drivers, this show had a healthy mix of custom sprinkled across the showgrounds. And all of them jumped in line for the Route 66 parade after the show on Saturday. I loved seeing the camaraderie between showgoers and spectators alike. Lifted trucks rolling down Main Street along with slammed rides was a satisfying sight to see. The cruise ended at a large parking lot that was VIP for show vehicles only. What was an eventful day at the showgrounds, one that turned into the old-style Saturday night cruise and hangout we all love. Just a bunch of car and truck guys, kicking it in a parking lot enjoying each other’s company. If you weren't able to attend the second annual Mother Road Mayhem, the crew is already making plans for their 2023 event. They’re setting the bar even higher for themselves and looking to make next year even better. So take your time, and scroll through the rides and candid shots from the weekend. Enjoy that print magazine in your hands and make plans to attend Mother Road Mayhem 2023!

LOVING THE LAYOUT As I walked around the Landreth Park showgrounds on Saturday morning, I absolutely loved the layout. It was easy to see that the Mother Road Mayhem crew had done this before. Big names wrapped around the grounds—from American Force and NSK Kustoms to AXE Wheels and Liberty Forged—giving spectators plenty of action. I also saw friendly faces as I roamed the field and scoped out talent of all kinds—lifted and lowered, loud and fast. This event gives you a very relaxed and laid-back vibe that will make you want to stick around. Topped off with food and drink vendors on site and downtown Joplin only a short drive away, I would say the organizers nailed it on this venue.

Another aspect that is different for some of us now is switching up the type of truck we decide to build and what to do with said truck once it’s finally completed. With the forced closure of public indoor spaces, we collectively looked to the great outdoors for consolation. Camping and spending more time away from the noisy city are activities that have gained traction in a major way, and to celebrate this desire to be outdoors, Hemmings Motor News embarked on a full custom pickup build that encapsulates how they perceive the current custom truck culture.

CLASSIC OVERLANDANDREADY Of course, as a publisher of magazines that cater to traders and collectors of antique, classic, and exotic sports cars, Hemmings has had its finger on the pulse of classic autos for decades now. The company selected a 1997 Ford F-250 to serve as the nucleus of its next big build. It saw this OBS model, and others of similar vintage, to be the next highly sought after and collectable pickups among enthusiasts across the board. While a good number of folks are actively looking to buy and ‘bag these specific Ford F-series models, Hemmings was also looking to throw its hat in the ring in another hot trend that is currently in a major upswing—overland camping.Whatexactly does “overland” mean? Well, the activity combines off-roading and camping by placing the truck (or any other type of desired vehicle) at the center of the adventure. While this method of enjoying time outdoors isn’t a new thing, it is currently a popular thing—and for good reason.

LTHOUGH THINGS SEEM TO BE SLOWLY GETTING BACK TO “NORMAL” (FOR NOW), THE COVID PANDEMIC HAS CHANGED A LOT OF FACETS OF OUR LIVES THAT MIGHT IMPACT OUR LONG-TERM OUTLOOK ON WHERE WE GO NEXT.

One thing that this ordeal has changed without a doubt is the process of building full custom vintage trucks. Getting the parts you need when you need them has been a struggle the last two-plus years due to strangled supply chains, but where there’s a will, there’s a way (most of the time).

DE3PROJECT ARTEMIS

Since most modern truck owners prefer the four-door crew cab configuration, that’s exactly what Hemmings looked for in a ’97 F-250. To help with the entirety of the build process

Kurt and Crystal Lawrence, husband and wife co-owners and operators of KTL Restorations in Danville, Virginia, hopped aboard as project managers to ensure that the Ford was built right the first time around. With a solid fabrication shop at the project’s helm, Hemmings’ new endeavor with the Ford began gaining attention, as well as offers from companies looking to participate in the process.

The first manufacturer to join the fun was Ford. As a company, it was interested in seeing its brand-new 7.3L Godzilla crate engine power Hemmings’ off-road adventure machine. The team was stoked to say the least about this huge addition to the project but due to tight supplies, Ford was not able send a transmission to go along with it. This was the first bump in the road that Kurt and Crystal encountered, but their persistence in calling every junk yard they could find phone numbers for finally paid off. Since there aren’t very many brand-new Ford donor vehicles out there yet (which is a good thing), tracking down a compatible transmission proved to be highly difficult but not ultimately impossible.Next, the KTL team began working on the F-250’s suspension system. The truck was torn down to the bare frame, and to give the truck better overlanding capabilities, the factory twin traction beam setup was removed for a solid front axle configuration complete with custom trailing arms, adjustable Fox external reservoir shocks all around, an RYD Motorsports 8-inch lift, along with a custom 4-link suspension swap at the rear. To complete the F-250’s heavily upgraded chassis, a set

Instead of having to make a reservation at an existing campsite somewhere, the truck becomes its own campsite, which promotes exciting, open-ended journeys into regionsPairingbeyond.anOBS F-Series truck with true overland capabilities was just too ideal of an adventure for Hemmings to wait any longer to embark upon. They dubbed the build “Project Artemis” after the Greek goddess of the wilderness, and the name couldn’t be any more fitting.

DE3PROJECT ARTEMIS

THROWBACK EXTERIOR With the power and suspension portions of the build well taken care of, the crew at KTL began rolling out their plan for the F-250’s exterior. From the start, the team already knew that a throwback ’90s style paint and graphics would be an absolute must. And to properly outfit the truck to live out its true overland intentions, Complete Performance Addicts joined the build as a major sponsor since the company is a commanding steward of classic early 80s-early ’00s full size Ford pickups.

With appearances at SEMA, Overland East and Lonestar Throwdown already in the books, this F-250 has many more stops planned for this rest of this year. While a project of this magnitude isn’t a light undertaking, the folks at Hemmings wished to make the effort to combine two popular trends in the pickup truck segment—a classic Ford F-Series pickup that is able to blast off into the horizon for an extended period of time without looking back even once. We’d have to say that everyone involved with this project is responsible for its overwhelming success.

COOL CONSERVATIVE CLASSIC! E VERYONE IN THE CAR HOBBY KNOWS THERE ARE TIMES WHEN PARTICULARA TRUCK, COLOR, OR BODY STYLE STRIKES A CHORD. There’s just something about a certain year, make, or model that says that’s the one! That’s what drew Keith “Tank” Tacti to his current ride. Tank has been involved in the truck scene since the late ’80s. Passionate about every aspect of the custom automotive hobby, he took it a step further, becoming more involved in the technical side. After developing talents for paint and body work, he eventually opened his own shop and ran a successful business for more than 20 Duringyears.thattime, as one of the perks of the business, he has owned more than 50 unique vehicles. In the beginning, the fun part was when his hobby turned into a business, giving him the perfect outlet for his creativity and to support his family. Over time however, the demands of business took some of the charm away from the hobby, and Tank decided to move on. He still maintains his passion for cool custom vehicles and is actively involved in the car show scene. He’s one of the promoters of the Made in Steel show, the Florida Lifted Show, and the Toy Drop Show, charitable pursuits that benefit the Children’s Cancer foundation.

The Bow Tie had a reliable 4.8L V-8 under the hood, more than quick enough in stock form to get the job done. Previously owned, the Chevy already had some custom touches that sweetened the deal but there was plenty still to be done. It had been bagged but it needed a new interior, the bed work wasn’t up to Tank’s standard, and naturally, there were lots of personal touches on his “freshening up” list.

TRADING UP Tank’s latest ride was predictable because he’s always been a Chevy guy and there was something about the Chevy Crew Cab body style that drew him to it like a magnet. After considerable research, he finally found this 2010 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab, selling his RAM truck to get it.

COOL CONSERVATIVE CLASSIC!

Since the goal was not to sit high and corner slowly, aftermarket suspension mods were among the first upgrades. Although it looks like it, the truck is not body dropped. The combination of an Ekstensive Metal Works air package began with new upper and lower bag mounts, a pair of Viair compressors, 3/8-inch lines, and 8-gallon reserve tank that created the desired low profile. The Ekstensive upper and lower control arms are designed for tire clearance even when the truck is in the weeds. The new air suspension components found a home under the bed between the rear bumper and the rear axle. Once the appropriate height adjustments were complete, 24-inch US Mags Desperado 2 rims and Zenna 30-series rubber filled the wheel wells and complemented the truck’s slammed profile. Accessorized with miniature chariot spikes, the 6-lug wheels are directional with different left and right sides. Finish work was required on the bed, completing the welds on the raised portion of the bed floor and then protecting it with bed liner in a shade that matched the exterior.

KICKIN’ KENWOOD

The interior was next on the list, accomplished by Peggs Upholstery in Lakeland, Florida. Tank left most of the decisions to the team, only specifying black vinyl and blue diamond stitching to complement the exterior paint. Although Tank has named this one “The Last One,” if you know Tank, there will probably be additional custom rides in the future. of Smithworkx. Tank met Daniel in the past and found his work amazing. Even before many of the other customizing decisions were made, Tank knew Daniel was going to be his paint man.

.76. SEPTEMBER 2022 | STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

“You’re the artist,” Tank said to Daniel. “This is your canvas. Do what you want but I’d like you to add a little silver leaf.”

The Blue Granite Metallic factory shade on the Chevy was beautifully accented with multicolored graphics applied by Daniel Smith

“I was bound and determined to have Daniel paint my truck,” he says. The unique part of that decision is Tank is already a fair hand with a paint gun, having made a living with it for years. He was so impressed with the quality of Daniel’s work however, that even as a talented shop owner, he is quick to give credit and brag about Daniel’s talent. Once again, the initial guidance was minimal.

STOCK-PLUS EXTERIOR When it comes to the exterior, Tank has also chosen a more conservative approach. Although his previous rocker-scrapin’, loud thumpin’, tribal painted Astro Van was great fun, tastes change. The classic lines of the Silverado were what attracted him to the truck in the first place, so his current design approach was to emphasize its iconic lines. Other than the billet grille up front, smoked LED taillights, and custom paint, the exterior is relatively stock except for the one big change that everyone notices.

It’s the kind of free reign approach every artist wants to hear. One of Daniel’s trademark approaches is he starts at the doors and moves to the rear. For a change of pace on Tank’s truck, he mixed it up a little, blending a half dozen colors and textures, starting at the front bumper and flowing toward the rear doors. Incorporating that special slash of silver leaf, the multicolored graphics become an eye-catching addition to the truck.

The only thing that looks old and outdated is the interior, but we have a plan for that. We have worked with quite a few interior shops in the past building out custom seat covers, unique door panels, and even hand-wrapped dash panels. Unfortunately, we have always had one problem after another with custom installs that reply on an individual local interior shop to come through on time and budget. With this truck, we have a hard deadline to complete the build so we can cruise on the Hot Rod Power Tour, so to guarantee a successful conversion with a clean look and cool style, we turned to the one team that has perfect the process.TMIProducts has been committed to developing innovatively designed, American-made integrated automotive products for more than 35 years. TMI is without a doubt the industry leader for custom interiors for your classic vehicle by offering molded door panels, headliners, carpet kits and, of course, complete seats packages. The company has plenty of patterns to choose from, lots of different seating configurations for your particular need, and all the mounting brackets necessary for your ride. We implore you to head over to www. tmiproducts.com to start building your kit today!

TECH | A COOL CAB FOR CRUISING 01 |Our 1985 Chevy C10’s stance is absolutely perfect thanks to a full coilover suspension system from QA1. The front springs and shocks were replaced with coilovers, along with the rear leaf springs. We also added a set 2-inch drop spindles from Wilwood brakes. 02 |We swappedalso out the original small block engine for a rebuilt 6.0L LS stuffed with new internal parts from Summit Racing. Now that we have a solid running/driving truck to take on the power tour, we focused our attention to the interior. Installing this amazing TMI Products bench seats is top on the list. It even came with a bracket specifically for this truck.

07 |Voilà!

The door panels are being installed first, so naturally we needed to remove the old ones to get them out of the way. These are still really nice though, so we will save them for a separate project.

To install the door panels, we just needed to mark a few mounting holes using the paper template TMI sent along with the set. It really is just that easy to have a custom set of door panels thanks to the amazing craftsmanship from TMI Products.

HOT ROD POWER TOUR ’22 T HE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE FOR ANY CUSTOM TRUCK OWNER IS UNDOUBTEDLY A MULTI-STATE ROAD TRIP DURING THE HOTTEST MONTH OF THE YEAR. The pressure put on gaskets and seals after a few hundred miles will find any flaw in your system, ultimately leaving you stranded on the side of the road watching all the other cool cars pass you by. It’s a horrible feeling, and unfortunately one we are all too familiar with. So, this year we decided to take the challenge by registering our 1985 Chevy Squarebody for the 2,000-mile Hot Rod Power .88. SEPTEMBER 2022 | STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

HOT ROD POWER TOUR ’22 Tour, which started in Memphis, Tennessee, and ended at Atlanta Motor Speedway five days later. On top of all those obstacles, Mother Nature decided it would be a terrific time to cover these states in a heatwave like one we have never felt, which is the absolute worst nightmare for any classic truck owner. Although, if you build it right no problems should arise, right? That’s what we thought.

BULLETPROOF? To prepare of Square for this trip, we did everything we thought needed to be done to make a bulletproof Bow Tie. We swapped out the entire suspension for a new QA1 coilover system, we replaced all the brakes with upgraded parts from Wilwood, we took out the original small block and replaced it with a completely rebuilt 6L LS stuffed with all new Eagle

WEAKEST LINK In our case, the weakest link was the one we didn’t see coming. We bolted a perfectly functioning 4L 60 E to the 6L LS engine with no questions on its reliability. It had low miles, it worked completely fine before it was removed, and all the fluid was removed and completelyUnfortunately, replaced.the heat built up after driving a few hundred miles destroyed the rings inside the transmission and left us with only third gear. It was devastating to say the least, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the rest of the trip.

OLD RELIABLE After a quick 350-mile tow back down south, we parked the pickup and fired up our ’78 Blazer. Old Reliable was ready and able to complete the entire power tour, and we’re proud to say we picked up our long hauler plaques at the end of the trip. It was a crazy and wild week of truck lifestyle fun, and one that we are sure to torture ourselves with again next year. Have you ever gone on a power tour? We’d love to hear about your experience!

Specialty parts from Summit racing, and we even removed all the factory interior and swapped it with heat and sound protection from DEI, as well as a new factory fresh interior from TMI Products. When all was said and done, the truck looked spectacular, ran like a brand new vehicle, and was cool and comfortable inside the cab. So, in our opinion, all our T’s were crossed and our I’s dotted. Yeah, we still found ourselves on the side of the road after a few hundred miles.

Conductive Classics’ Electric Powered ’58 Chevy Pickup WORDS BY JOHN MATA JR. PHOTOS BY KYLE APPELL STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022 .97.

ITH GASOLINE PRICES SHARPLY RISING WITH NO PLATEAU IN SIGHT, SOME TRUCK OWNERS MAY OPT TO KEEP THEIR VEHICLE WITH THE LEAST IDEAL MPG RATING PARKED AT HOME UNTIL THE PAIN AT THE PUMP STARTS TO SUBSIDE. While we all keep an eye on the fluctuating rates at the gas station, it’s only natural to wonder how things are on the other side of the fence. In theory, electric vehicles sound so easy to use—just plug it in, charge it up and go, right? Well, for the most part, that’s the general gist of how they operate, with a few differences here and there. Drivers who are fine with cruising around in cars that might not exactly be considered ‘lookers’ (with the exception of a few Tesla and Rivian models), EVs are great for saving on fuel. For those who prefer pickup trucks, however, the selection of electric trucks drops dramatically, even though there are a rising number of the big manufacturers addressing the demand.

Enter Shane Rolph, of Garden City, Idaho, who just so happens to be the general manager of Conductive Classics—an automotive performance shop that specializes in converting vintage cars and trucks from gas to electric. The guys were looking for a break from the norm, and found a niche that is currently spiking in interest and importance these days. “We wanted to venture into the whole EV thing with this Chevy pickup, while still keeping everything else about it a classic”, Shane says.

The Conductive crew began putting some ideas together to see what they could do with the ’58 Chevy Apache Shane was able to get his hands on. Of course, the main objective was to ditch the truck’s original fuel system for a newfangled electric motor instead. They didn’t intend to stop there, however, as they wanted the truck to feel as ‘normal’ as possible, so they began weighing out further important options. But first, the Apache’s chassis would briefly go under the knife. A front TCI coilover suspension setup complete with disc brakes quickly gave the Chevy better handling abilities from the

Old vehicles and the scent of burning gasoline go hand in hand, it really would take a complete ground-up project to explore what a fully electric drivetrain could look and feel like.

What about electric classic trucks though?

In the end, the truck the guys now refer to as the E-Pache stands as a different type of EV—one that can satisfy the demands of modern classic custom truck builders while ensuring a certain future for all those “old” vehicles in need of saving. With more electric conversions on the road with way more on the horizon, it’s safe to say that there is a straightforward path to excitementinducing plug-in power. The term “EV” doesn’t automatically have to equal “boring”—nope, not anymore.

E-PACHE jump. 15x7 Voxx Rally style wheels were bolted up to give the truck that classic styling the guys at Conductive were after. Next, the factory engine was yanked, and the frame was outfitted with custom mounts and brackets to house the upcoming EV power source. A NetGain HyPer 9 electric motor now takes up residence underneath the hood. At first glance, one does wondering if that’s all that is necessary to power the truck. Of course, an electrical system like this does rely on an assortment of accompanying components, which the guys felt better stealthily stashing in an old toolbox in the bed instead of cluttering up the engine bay. Next was the matter of figuring out the rest of the Apache’s drivetrain, although a directdrive system was never in the running of being included in this build. The Conductive crew was far more interested in utilizing a conventional 5-speed transmission to allow the driver to shift through the gears, which would greatly help maintain the true driving experience associated with vintage

“We have found that EVs are extremely complex yet so much more simple overall”, Shane admits. “Along the way, we have dealt with frustrations of chasing down accurate wiring diagrams, but through research we have learned easier ways to get these electric conversions down to a process that works well for us.”

truck. The use of a transmission adapter plate made this possible, and the result makes for a truck that is exciting to whip around the track without the sound of a fuel thirsty high-performance engine. While saving money at the pump is part of the reason to go electric, Shane finds that EV conversions will be the long run answer to preserving more classic vehicles in the future. To do their part, Conductive Classics is now offering electric swaps in any vehicle of 1975 vintage and older. Every swap is different, as systems are built to order to meet desires regarding power output, drive range between charges and more at a starting price that can fit into more projects than you might think.

FTER TAKING TIME OFF FROM PROJECT LUCID DREAMS TO COMPLETE MY FIRST YEAR OF LAW SCHOOL, WE ARE BACK IN ACTION WITH THE S-10. We brought the truck home from The Shop, owned by Chace Yonts, toward the end of last year after completing the air management. We are now starting on a few interior upgrades as we plan out the rest of the build. First up, we’re adding a new steering wheel from Forever Sharp. The company carries many different styles of steering wheels as well as adapters to fit just about any vehicle. We chose the 14-inch billet muscle half wrap design, and boy does it look good! With Forever Sharp, they also supply the horn, so you don’t lose any functionality when swapping to an aftermarket wheel. Time to get rid of the stock look and get our new steering wheel installed!

To start removing the airbag, take a flathead screwdriver and place it in the small slot behind the steering wheel. There is one on each side of the steering wheel. With a little force, twist the screwdriver until the airbag starts to release from the steering wheel.

ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMPORTANCE THEY CURRENTLY SERVE, LET’S GET ONE THING STRAIGHT—THEY ARE HERE TO STAY. This is evident more than it ever has been due to the sheer amount, quality and variety of electrified cars and trucks on display at the 2021 SEMA show. Now, we aren’t talking about factory-built electric powered vehicles that are currently on the road such as Tesla models and various smaller cars from just about every major auto manufacturer. While these did help with pave the way for where the electric marketplace it is today, we were paying closer attention to the conversion projects that were in attendance—and sheesh, there were a lot of them! Of course, the type of “conversion” we are discussing is the actual change over to full electric power from internal combustion engines. The vehicles that received the most attention at the show weren’t even brand new car and truck model offerings—it was the retrofitted classic vehicles that made the biggest impact as a whole.

STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022 .113.

Those who enjoy true off-road vehicles must have got a kick out of the vintage Toyota Land Cruisers that showed up. There was also a great Ford Bronco built by Gateway Broncos at the show that does the 0-60 dash in about 4 seconds, while maintaining a 300-mile range on a full battery charge. Its e-motor also boasts a similar horsepower output that would rival a high-performance V-8, which is certainly impressive. These types of electric conversions might be some of the most unlikely candidates as they have the most to prove, but it just goes to show that EVs don’t have to be boring, slow or lack reliable power andOnutility.theflip side, this new breed of EVs doesn’t stop at classic retrofit conversions. Ford introduced the all-electric 2022 F-150 Lightning, which has already begun rolling out on the streets. EV pickups will soon become commonly available when shopping for a new truck, which will be an interesting option to weigh out indeed.

GMC also unveiled the

THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE REVOLUTION

One particular build that stopped us in our tracks was the 1978 Ford F-100 Eluminator pickup. This thing looks like a regular classic truck, only with a slight electric twist. The build features two Ford Performance Parts’ Mach E electric crate motors as well as matching components from the Ford Mustang Mach E GT electric SUV, which is a great production EV to take note of.

Now, some folks might mistake the word “electric” for “weak,” but the F-100 Eluminator truck is anything but sluggish. The dual Mach E electric motors crank out a combined 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque. Yep, those numbers are correct. Add that with the truck’s custom chassis by the Roadster Shop, and you’ve got yourself one performance-minded electric pickup that could change the way you think about these battery-powered conversions.

Across the board, there were more types of EVs at the 2021 SEMA Show than any year in the past. Yes, it is a sign of things to come. No, you should not be afraid of it. There are a number of conversion options for classic trucks if you feel the desire to electrify your ride. At this point, these kits are ultra reliable and can realistically be a part of your next project. Price points can range higher than typical engine swaps, so don’t expect to get off cheap going the EV route. With gas prices the way they currently are though, plugging in could be more cost efficient in the long run than remaining reliant on the fuel pump. That same rationale has to be taken into consideration when considering purchasing one of the new production EV trucks as well—only time will tell. While EVs aren’t for everyone, electric motors do show the potential of being the next big thing in customization. There has even been some buzz about these types of builds being the next hot rods, but we won’t move too fast too soon here, although there is no denying the level of quality and excitement that was on display at SEMA

THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE REVOLUTION

Hummer EV “supertruck” prototype that features an insane 1,000+ horsepower rating as well as an upgraded wheel and tire package, an air suspension system and everything else necessary to conquering rugged off-road terrain. Again, local dealerships should soon start offering these complete and ready to rock direct from the factory.

We’ll’21.be looking forward what the electric offerings will look like this year, but until then take the time to familiarize yourself with the term “frunk,” as it will soon enough become a regular addition to the pickup truck vernacular.

TECH WORDS AND PHOTOS BY CHRIS HAMILTON I T’S TIME FOR STREET TRUCKS MAGAZINE TO GIVE BACK! We are partnering with Mission 22 for a unique charity project designed to raise as much money as possible for this amazing organization.nonprofitTheir goal is to decrease the number of active and non-active military suicides from the current average of 22 per day. We have all seen themed charity truck builds in the past, but we intend to do something a little different with Sergeant Square. Instead of creating a military-themed truck or building a vehicle to give to a deserving service member, we hired one of the nation’s top truck designers to create the ultimate looking and most desirable Chevy Squarebody on the planet. BUILD IT, SHOW IT, SELL IT… CHARITY!FORSergeant Square .118. SEPTEMBER 2022 | STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM

TECH | SERGEANT SQUARE 01 |ABOVE. Here you can see the current state of our Sergeant. He’s old, retired, and looks a little grumpy. That’s OK though. He will stand guard once again very soon! 02 |RIGHT. Thanks to Chris Stafford of Stafford’s Garage and Chad Canning from Rendered Rides, you can see into the future with this amazing rendering. Wait until you see it in person! 03 |The currentlySergeanthasno engine, which takes one task off our plate. Now we need to decide what to put in its place. Once it’s built, we will take it on tour to multiple automotive and military events around the country before displaying it at our SEMA Show booth in 2023. The final destination for this Sergeant will be on the auction block at Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale where 100% of the profits will be donated to Mission 22. We have some new great sponsors on board including Classic Industries, LMC Truck, QA1, Slosh Tubz, and All American Chassis. STREETTRUCKSMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022 .119.

TECH | SERGEANT SQUARE 04 |The grille, lights, body panels, and bumpers will all be replaced with new reproductionfactory pieces, making it basically a brand new truck. 05 |All American Chassis stepped up to the plate to build a completely custom chassis for our Sergeant, which will undoubtedly garner more profits from the sale and, in turn, help Mission 22 save some lives of military members through their amazing efforts. .120. TECH | SERGEANT SQUARE 06 |For this truck to be desirable to anyone and everyone, QA1 will set the height and ride quality by mounting its coilovers to all four corners. 07 |If you’re familiar with Squarebody trucks, you know they won’t go too low in the front without the tire rubbing the inner fenders. Thanks to the amazing engineering behind Slosh Tubz, we are able to remove the factory fender wells and swap them out with these units that will give us all the room we need. TECH | SERGEANT SQUARE 08 |LMC Truck is making this truck great again with all new exterior body panels as well as new bumpers and trim. Did you know they had all these parts for your classic truck, too? 09 |The lights, glass, and interior also have to be replaced, and we knew just who to call. Classic Industries is a top name in the game, and we are so excited to have them on the docket. More info coming soon! 10 |For now, we need to start the breakdown, so up on the lift it goes. Although the answer is often, “No, I was just living in the moment.” I can’t help but think that cool is forever. When a project is well thought out and perfectly executed, I truly believe it will stand the test of time. Remember, the proper stance, paint, wheels, interior, and engine bay can set your truck apart from the crowd. Most importantly, it will bring happiness and many smiles of endless cruising. Until next month, stay “On Da Rise.” Peace, Jason “ODB” Ballard of Our Lifestyle Podcast!

HIS PAST MONTH I DID SOME REMINISCING AND LOOKED BACK AT EARLY ISSUES OF STREET TRUCKS. I concluded that trends come and go, but cool is forever. This made me think about a key question I enjoy asking builders and enthusiasts on OLP: “Did you realize when you were building the truck that it would stand the test of time or be so iconic?”
