Council declares war on developers – but approves smaller housing scheme COUNCILLORS have given the go ahead to a scheme for 130 homes West of Gloucester Road just days after declaring a legal challenge over the Cleve Park development in Thornbury, and requesting an intervention from the Housing Minister over another proposed Thornbury

development.

The Cleve Park residential development includes proposals for 350 homes and a 70 unit elderly care facility, open space, and community facilities. It was originally given permission by a planning inspector following an inquiry.

South Gloucestershire council has also asked the Secretary of State to take over the planning appeal for another proposed development of 370 homes in Thornbury and make the decision himself.

Thornbury breastfeeding support project wins Queen’s award UP to 40 volunteers who support breastfeeding Mums are to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade which can be given to volunteer groups in the UK. The Barnardo’s Breastfeeding Peer Support Project provides emotional and practical support to new mothers. Weekly groups are held at venues in Thornbury, Yate and across South Gloucestershire. The Thornbury group, called Sweet Peas meets at Thornbury Hospital’s Outpatient Department on Thursdays between 1pm and 2.30.

Since it was commissioned in 2011, it’s helped over one thousand women, and more than 400 families use it every year.

The trained volunteers act as ‘peer supporters’, to help mothers for as long as is needed.

They work with women giving any amount of breast milk, via any method.

One mother said: “Becoming a mum and breastfeeding were the best but also the hardest things I’ve ever done. The support from the group made all the difference.”

Cllr Erica Williams, Cabinet member for public health at South Gloucestershire Council, said; “I was thrilled to learn that the volunteers who help run this council-commissioned service have won such a prestigious Queen’s Award. Different levels of support are available to mothers who use this service, including access to advice from a breastfeeding counsellor, and the seven community-based breastfeeding groups – run by the volunteers – where mothers can go to get ongoing peer support to help them breastfeed their babies for as long as they wish to. Well done to everyone involved in this fantastic initiative.”

The volunteers will receive a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed glass crystal, to be presented by the Lord Lieutenant later this summer.

Volunteers needed to make cards for charity VOLUNTEERS are being sought in Thornbury to set up a card making group for the Bristol charity Goodwill Children’s Homes.

Improvements to Thornbury’s health and care services don’t go far enough, say critics SOUTH Gloucestershire’s ruling Conservatives have taken on the lead role in commissioning future health and social care services for Thornbury. They say their aim is to deliver improvements as quickly as possible whilst working with their partners in the NHS. But the Liberal Democrat group claim that the proposed changes fall short of meeting residents needs.

If the plans get approval, they would provide between 6 and 10 rehabilitation beds in Thornbury for people unable to remain at home but who don’t need to be in an acute hospital.

There would also be between 45 to 55 rehabilitation beds in Frenchay for people who have left hospital care but need a period of rehabilitation before returning home.

There would be at least 72 care home beds in total across both sites including social care beds for dementia nursing. In addition, an ‘extra care’ housing scheme of 50 to 80 dwellings would be built on each site.

‘Extra Care’ housing is typically sheltered housing which also offers help with chores and personal care.

The Conservative leader of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Toby Savage said: “The benefits to the council taking on the lead commissioner role will

bring a number of important advantages to residents who need to access health and social care facilities in Frenchay and Thornbury.”

“This is an exciting opportunity to genuinely integrate health and social care – and in Thornbury’s case to go that one step further and have enhanced GP services/primary care as a key feature of the plans too. Having as many services under one roof as possible maximises the opportunity to ensure that patients are getting the right care for them to maximise their independence.”

But Thornbury councillor, Maggie Tyrrell, said: “Lib Dem councillors have been

campaigning for new health and care facilities for Thornbury for years. While we welcome this latest news on rehabilitation and care services, we are concerned that no plans have

yet been forthcoming to replace outpatient services currently provided by Thornbury Hospital, which is due to be decommissioned within the next few years. We would call upon the local NHS and the Council to work together to draw up plans that will address all of Thornbury’s health needs, not just one aspect of them.”

Lib Dem lead member for Heath Scrutiny, Cllr Sue Hope, said: “While we welcome any additional health services for South Gloucestershire, we must be clear that these proposals still fall far short of meeting future local health needs. The new Thornbury facility will likely see 6-10 NHS beds and around 36 beds for dementia patients within a nursing home. This in no way constitutes a ‘new hospital’ for Thornbury.”

Thornbury police Horticultural Society set to wow visitors officer wins award to summer show

High Sheriff of Somerset Mr Denis Burn and PC Julie Rudyard A THORNBURY police officer has received a Royal Humane Society Award for saving a man’s life. PC Julie Rudyard was recognised at the Avon and Somerset Force Awards for her quick thinking.

After responding to a call from a member of the public, she arrived to find that the man had collapsed. PC Rudyard called an ambulance and carried out CPR until paramedics took over.

The man later had triple heart by-pass surgery and has since recovered. The paramedics said that PC Rudyard’s sustained actions were undoubtedly the reason the man survived.

Her life saving actions were just one of several combinations at a special awards ceremony.

Chief Constable Andy Marsh said; “Time and time again, I’m inspired by the commitment, courage and resilience shown by my fellow officers. The changing face of policing is apparent as we read through the citations

for the Force Awards. We still catch criminals but around 80% of what we do involves supporting vulnerable victims, problem solving and working through crisis situations.

Many of the incredible deeds we celebrate today are driven by three motivations; hope to make things better, belief in fairness and equality and human kindness - which is at the heart of policing.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mounstevens said; “Recognising the men and women who work with extraordinary dedication and courage, day in day out is very humbling and a real honour.

We have seen great stories of bravery, perseverance and a passion for policing that is second to none. I am in awe of the heroism and enthusiasm that all 20 winners have shown, and I am extremely grateful to each and every one of them.”

THE Thornbury in Bloom award winning displays will be among the exhibits at Thornbury Horticultural Society’s summer show. The event, which will take place at the Armstrong Hall complex on 11 August from 2pm to 4pm, will show the displays which have been chosen for both the regional and national competitions.

The show has sections for vegetables, flowers, floral art, cooking, photography,

handicrafts and children’s categories.

Rex Davis, the chairman of Thornbury Horticultural Society said: “It’s an open show so you can plan your entry now, then go and look round on the day and enjoy tea and cake.”

Stellar names at Downs festival SUMMER will finish with a flourish in Bristol this summer as The Downs Festival returns with a line-up featuring Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds, Paul Weller, Orbital and Goldie & The Ensemble on Saturday, September 1st.

Former Oasis frontman Noel will be heading up the bill, with fellow British music legend Paul Weller another heavyweight

act for the event. The Heavy, Houston trio Khruangbin, Nadine Shah and Dream Wife will also be playing to tens of thousands of music fans on Bristol’s much-loved green space.

Schoolgirl recovers after snake bite A 15 YEAR OLD pupil at Castle School in Thornbury, has recovered after being bitten by an adder.

Jess Astley had been walking in the school field with friends during a lunch break when she was bitten. She said: “It was all so quick. The girls around me were screaming. I felt something go into me, I kicked and felt something rip out of me and then I was gone, I ran so fast”.

Head of year 7, Andrew Grant, who’s been at the school for 23 years, was in the student centre when Jess came in.

He said: “I do various school expeditions and was brought up in an area with lots of snakes, so recognised it as an adder bite.

The snake had been in the long grass on the edge of woodland – typical for this time of year when they often range further in search of mates. The unusually warm dry weather also encourages them to be more active. The bite was defensive, but included some venom.”

The paramedics who treated Jess said they’d never been called

to a snakebite injury before.

Jess was given antihistamine as her ankle puffed up and a rash appeared around the bite.

At Southmead hospital she was given anti venom.

Jess said: “The staff believed it was an adder because it’s the only venomous snake in Britain and my ankle had really puffed up. If it had been a grass snake there would have been just the two holes.”

Her Mum, Jane Combes, said: “The staff treated it as if it was an adder, but we won’t ever know for sure. Everyone on the day was fantastic and I felt Jess was in the right hands all the way through”.

Her daughter was kept on a high dependency ward for 4 hours because of the risk of anaphylactic shock.

Happily, Jess has recovered completely and was ready to start her GCSE exams.

Change coming to historic house ACTON Court in Iron Acton is to undergo major changes that will see its summer opening season take on a different format next year.

Built in nine months for a weekend visit by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn during their summer tour of the West Country in 1535, the house and grounds have been open to the public for 20 years but this year is the last of its formal summer season.

Lisa Kopper, Artist in Residence at Acton Court told the Voice: “At this stage there are a number of structural repairs that need to happen and the walls have suffered greatly over the past few years due to the unusual weather patterns. We need to schedule vital repairs and are planning to announce future plans at the end of the year.”

“We would like to open the gardens in June as during the years of summer tours, the public has rarely been able to see the beautiful Acton Court roses.”

Over the years Acton Court

has become known for its high quality events and especially the renaissance music performed in King Henry VIII’s rooms of state.

This summer is no exception and tickets for two concerts, Music for the Two Mary’s on the 29 July and Glorianna on the 12th August are still available.

n NEWS OLD Down cricket club are celebrating their 175th birthday with a series of special events that include a dinner on board the SS Great Britain.

What is thought to be the oldest club in the Bristol area was established very close to July 19, 1843 when Brunel’s iconic steamship was launched.

The world is a very different place these days but the first Old Down cricketers would still recognise the club’s undulating outfield and stunning views over the Severn Estuary to the Welsh hills.

Andy Rowen is in his third year as chairman, following in the footsteps of his father Roger who is now president, while 14-year-old son George is starting to make an impression at a club dominated by family groups sharing a love of cricket.

Andy said: “Even on a cold night it’s good to come up and enjoy what we have here. We’re a village cricket club with no pretences … we play for fun and we try to win. But we try to do it properly, shaking hands after and then having a beer.”

Old Down put out two senior Saturday sides in the Bristol & District League as well as under-11, under-13 and under-15 youth teams along with running Chance to Shine for under-9s and the new All-Star scheme which is aimed at youngsters aged five to eight.

Andy added: “It’s wonderful to be here on a Friday and see kids absolutely everywhere. The anniversary will include a family day in June because we want the celebrations to include our

130 more homes for Thornbury despite council’s legal challenge to other developments PROPOSALS to build 130 homes on agricultural land west of Gloucester Road in Thornbury have been approved for a second time, just days after South Glos Council started legal proceedings to challenge another development in the town.

The approved scheme, submitted by Ainscough Strategic land, went back before South Gloucestershire’s Development Control Committee (West) to amend the weighting given to heritage assets, following legal advice.

Thornbury Town Council, residents and the action group Trapp’d (Thornbury Residents Against Poorly Planned Development) had objected to the plans on the grounds of the distance from facilities in town, no increase in public services in Thornbury, and dangerous access to the site. The developers made various changes including a reduction in the number of

homes from 180 to 130.

The news of the approval came shortly after South Gloucestershire Council announced that it would challenge a planning inspector’s decision over the Cleve Park development for 350 homes, and wanted the Housing Minister to intervene in a Bovis Home application for 370 houses.

Leader of the Council Cllr Toby Savage said: “Enough is enough. I am determined to see the council take a robust approach to challenging unsustainable development across the district.”

Cabinet Member for Planning Cllr Colin Hunt said: “It is not appropriate for Thornbury, Charfield and other locations to be under attack from speculative developers in this way, who are seeking to circumvent the plan led system and community engagement in a manner which undermines the recently

submitted JSP.” Roger Hall, Trapp’d Co Chairman, said: “We felt that they were finally conceding ground on sustainability of the number of speculative, non plan-led planning applications that have come forward since the Core Strategy was adopted in 2013.”

“However, they now appear to have contradicted their own revised policy and moved the goalposts once again by supporting the land west of Gloucester Road application, whilst wishing the Secretary of State to reverse the Appeal decision on the Cleve Park application.”

Trapp’d is urging the public to sign their open letter to the Housing Minister which is available at Thornbury Town Hall. It’s asking James Brokenshire for ‘urgent help to save our town’.

In a written report regarding

the Ainscough application for 130 homes West of the Gloucester Road, the case officer said: “Irrespective of the position on the Cleve Park site it is not considered that the application proposal for only 130 dwellings prejudices or predetermines the JSP in a similar way.”

In the approved version of the Ainscough plans, there is now a priority T-junction with a dedicated right turn lane and ghost island on Gloucester Road. The speed limit between the site and the town has been reduced to 30mph in response to resident’s concerns. The council’s transport officer said in his report that he was now ‘satisfied’.

But Trapp’d Co-chairman Roger Hall said: “I am seriously thinking of asking him if he would like to visit this section of Gloucester Road to stand on the white line in the middle of the carriageway and see how long he lasts!”.

Stroud Auction Rooms on the move

THE Thornbury Stroke Support Group needs someone to take charge of its bowls team.

They meet on alternate Friday afternoons from September March each year at Thornbury Leisure Centre. The club has many volunteer helpers but just needs someone who is willing to take charge and organise.

STROUD Auction Rooms has moved to bigger premises. The increasing popularity of this leading Gloucestershire auction house meant it had outgrown the building that has been home for almost a decade. It’s now moved to the 18th century Grade II listed Lightpill Mill, where there is three times the floor space.

The much larger sale room accommodates new shelving and fittings, bigger reception area and greatly increased storage facilities and is just a few hundred yards across from the Bath Road Trading Estate.

Owner and auctioneer Nick Bowkett said: "Staff have always given a great deal of time and attention to presenting items as professionally as possible, but the increased space will allow lots to be displayed much more effectively."

Summer party to support hospice THE Severnside Support Group is holding a garden party to raise funds for St Peter’s Hospice. Partygoers can enjoy the gardens at Grove House in Alveston, accompanied by music from ‘Mo, Mac and Me’.

Falfield residents welcome government help with repairs PEOPLE living in Falfield have welcomed the news that the Prison Service will pay for repairs to street lighting.

They had previously expressed concerns about the safety of residents living near Eastwood Park prison. They claimed they had to deal with faulty street lighting and dark spots around the main streets in the village since 2014.

The Ministry of Justice says it’s willing to meet with the Residents’ Association to discuss other issues, such as the maintenance of local roads. The Ministry of Justice is responsible for managing the Eastwood Park Estate.

residents’ group said: “Church Avenue & Eastley Close in Falfield have had a major problem regarding street lighting for years. We look forward to meeting with officials to discuss these issues in greater depth”.

Local MP Luke Hall said; “I am delighted to hear that street lighting repairs will now be carried out as soon as possible and that residents will soon get the chance to meet with officials to discuss these issues”.

Exhibition to showcase 100 years of inspirational local women A TOURING exhibition is to highlight the achievements of women in communities across South Gloucestershire.

The project ‘Inspiring Women: the legacy of the First World War in South Gloucestershire’, has been

collecting stories and experiences about women who’ve made a difference to society between 1918 and the present day.

Members of the public have been asked to nominate who they would like to see included.

The project demonstrates how the events of 1918 changed women’s lives forever. It was not only the year that war ended but also the year when the Representation of the People Act was introduced. This allowed some women over 30 the right to vote. It was not until the Equal Franchise Act of 1928 that women over 21 were able to vote, and finally women achieved the same voting rights as men.

The project has been funded by a £9,600 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Cllr Rachael Hunt, Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “We are working with various local heritage organisations to research and uncover hidden stories as well as Cllr Rachel Hunt, the Chair of South finding artefacts, letters or Gloucestershire Council; a position newspapers. We hope to learn unthinkable for women a century ago more about the roles women

play in the development of our distinctive local industries such as farming, aeronautical and engineering jobs.”

Rachael Hunt continued;

“We also want to document the contributions women make to community, business, culture, science, sport, education and politics.”

MABEL Flux is one of the women who will feature in the exhibition. She was born in 1897 and went to Frenchay village school. In 1914 she picked up vital food producing skills after attending a cheese making course held at the Country Dairy School in Bristol. Between 1914 and 1918 she worked in the Women’s Land Army.

When their brother Tom died, Mabel and her sister Kit were left to run the family farm for most of the war delivering milk to people from the farm’s dairy. Mabel married an Australian soldier and moved to Melbourne. She went on to serve as mayor for Portland and was made a justice of the peace. She was awarded an O.B.E. just a few years before her death in 1966.

Council looks to lift levy on new agricultural buildings SOUTH Gloucestershire’s ruling Conservative group has published plans to remove a tax on new agricultural buildings because it says it’s having an adverse impact on farming communities.

The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a tax on new developments which was introduced by South Gloucestershire Council in 2015.

Under CIL, new agricultural buildings are currently classified as ‘other’ developments, and charged a flat rate of £10 per square metre, with the money going to fund council projects.

Now the council is looking to exempt new agricultural buildings. Cabinet Member for Planning Cllr Colin Hunt said; “An unintended consequence of this policy, which was agreed under the previous administration, has been to put additional pressure on struggling farms, who have

faced this extra charge to invest in their businesses. This was wrong, and we have taken the decision to put it right by starting this review.”

Unlike with Section 106 agreements, where the money must offset the impact of a new development, CIL receipts can be used to fund any infrastructure projected identified by the council which is on the ‘Regulation 123 list’.

These have included A38 improvements including the Aztec Roundabout scheme which will include £2.5m from CIL receipts, £1m for the North Fringe to Hengrove Metrobus Scheme, and £500,000 to support the provision of extra primary school places in 2018/19.

The CIL charges for new agricultural buildings alone have generated £116,000 in the last three years.

represents a large rural ward said; “I am pleased we are going to re-look at this charge on new agricultural buildings. Since the introduction of CIL to pay for infrastructure, the farming community have felt aggrieved that South Gloucestershire is one of the few areas in the UK where it is applied in this way. I would encourage everyone to take part in the review.”

ORGANISERS of this year’s Thornbury Carnival say the line up of artists and attractions will provide the best ever event. The theme is “1918-2018 Then and Now”, reflecting on the centenary of the end of the Great War and some women being given the vote.

The parade starts at 10.30am on July 7 from the Castle School, led by The Band Of The Royal Corps Of Signals, followed by Thornbury's W.I. and Towns Women's Guild, dressed as suffragettes.

There will also be marching and Samba bands, walking and dancing groups, shire horses and a dray cart, a traction engine, classic cars and military vehicles,

After the parade the carnival moves on to the Mundy Fields for a programme of activities for all ages. New this year is a photo booth, a caving and climbing wall and a pet corner from Avon Wildlife Park. In the children's zone many activities are free of charge.

the horse, falconry and motor cycle displays. In addition, there will be a funfair, the Weston Donkeys, three bars and numerous stalls and food vendors.

Swing’s the thing for jazz musician ONE of Britain’s best known jazz musicians is coming to South Gloucestershire.

Clare Teal returns to Chipping Sodbury in November with an evening of music from across the decades.

The concert, scheduled for the 30 November at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, features Clare and her Trio. Clare is an award winning jazz vocalist and Radio 2 presenter, and her concerts promise enjoyable arrangements interspersed with Clare’s storytelling.

Festival organisers hope to keep July date as they gear up for this year’s event THE organisers of the Frampton Festival say they hope to keep running the event in July, despite suggestions from Frampton Cotterell Parish Council that it should move to September.

Haddrell said: “The council have concerns about the decrease in biodiversity in Centenary Field, and their proposal is not to cut the meadow grass in July prior to the festival, which would have an impact on the area that the festival could utilise.

However, the venue and date is secured for this year and 2019. We are hopeful that the festival will remain in its current location and on its established date.”

This year’s event promises to be a well attended event with the festival now in its sixth year. The Festival committee have been working since November to organise the event, with Professor Panic’s Circus, Rogers’ fairground rides, Frampton Cotterell Air Training Corp’s flight simulator, and steam engine rides just some of

Road casualties at historic low CASUALTIES from road accidents have dropped by more than a fifth in South Gloucestershire according to latest figures. Police accident reports showed the total figure for 2017 to be 447, compared to 571 in 2016.

They are the lowest numbers since South Gloucestershire became a unitary authority in 1996.

The total number of deaths on the district’s roads was 8, with 34 serious casualties, and 405 minor injuries.

Cllr Colin Hunt, Cabinet member responsible for transport, welcomed the news: “It’s great to see that casualty rates have reduced, making South Gloucestershire’s roads some of the safest in the country.

“The council takes road safety extremely seriously and we work closely with our partners in the police, with schools and with other agencies to identify where and why road accidents happen and what can be done to prevent them.

“However, we cannot afford to become complacent. Eight fatalities is eight fatalities too many, and the council will continue to make every effort to deliver road safety training to raise awareness about this issue.”

A more robust stance from council on housing is welcome

I

N last month’s column I updated everyone on the present situation and next steps on our communities fight against the poorly thought out Buckover proposals, urging everyone that has backed the campaign to date to not lose faith, and continue fighting to see this through.

I was delighted with the response to the last column, and would like to thank everyone that has got in touch to reaffirm that they will continue to join me in the task ahead – when we work together we are stronger, which brings me to my next update.

Fresh new leadership at South Gloucestershire Council has now provided an opportunity for a renewed stance on the development issue facing Thornbury. I was delighted to hear that the council, under new leader Toby Savage, has announced that they will be challenging the independent inspector over their recent decision on the latest speculative development known as ‘Cleve Park’. This robust approach is the right signal we need to send to developers targeting Thornbury, and this marked change in the councils approach should be welcomed.

I will now be working with the new leader of the council to make a stand against this off-the cuff proposal which have been slapped on our community.

There is still a lot to do, not just defending Thornbury against speculative developments but also the ill-thought out Buckover proposals which may have huge implications for our town’s services.

The move by the council to take on and ensure the build of the new Thornbury health centre, after the fierce campaign to see it progressed, is an example of where we are fighting for better infrastructure. But we are aware these projects are needed to address our existing infrastructure issues, not the new ones that a 3,000 house ‘Garden Village’ could throw up.

I will continue to speak up on Buckover at every opportunity to urge for a re-think on these proposals, and in that process I will work with the council’s new leader to see that Thornbury’s voice is being heard.

Cooking for sunny days

O

NCE the summer weather arrives my thoughts turn to light, easy to prepare, seasonal dishes. I’m a great fan of fish, which I find ticks all these boxes. So, this month my recipe is for delicious fritters, which go particularly well with fish for a light summery meal.

All you need now are some green beans, mange tout or fresh peas to make this perfect summer meal.

I’m suggesting you cook some fish like whole sea bass to go with the fritters. Why not make life easy and get the supermarket staff to put each fish in its own paper bag to cook in the oven. It’s like doing it “en papillotte”(in a paper or foil parcel) as the French would say, but without the fuss, and no fishy smells in the house.

I’ve just got back from a stunning cruise off the Norwegian fjords where I ate lots of fish and indeed these little fritters which I’ve now made at home. Sometimes I find it’s the accompaniments that go with the main star on the plate that can steal the show. See what you think.

Courgette and Potato Fritters These fritters look very pretty and are full of vitamins. They are especially tasty served with fish.

Makes about 18, serve 3 for each person Ingredients: For the fritters • Courgettes- 200g (8 • Waxy potatoes like Maris Piper150g (5 oz)5oz) • Porridge oats – 50g (2 oz), or brown bread crumbs if you prefer • Sesame seeds – 2 tbsps • Freshly grated nutmeg – ½ tsp • Large eggs -2, lightly be • Butter15g, Veg oil for shallow frying, 1 tbsp For the cream to accompany the fritters Crème fraiche – 3 tbsps Natural Greek Yogurt – 4 tbsps Fresh chives, dill, flat leaf parsley – 2 tbsps each, finely chopped

Capers – 1tbsp, finely chopped Lemon zest – ½ tsp Here’s what you do: 1. F irst make the cream. Simply mix all the cream ingredients together. Cover with cling film and refrigerate ‘til required.

2. C oarsely grate the courgettes and potatoes. Place in a clean cloth and squeeze out excess moisture.

3. M ix the veg inn a large bowl with all the other fritter ingredients EXCEPT the butter and oil. If frying straight away, season with salt and pepper. If cooking later, leave out the salt ‘til just before using as the salt will bring out the moisture in the veg and make the batter too wet.

4. P reheat a large pan. Add the oil and butter.

5. P lace spoonfuls of the mixture in the pan and cook for 3 mins on each side or until crisp and golden brown. Blot on kitchen paper.

6. P ut cooked fritters in a warmed oven to keep hot until all the mixture is used.

7. P lace 3 fritters on each plate and top with the cream. Serve at once.

Susan Lewis kicks off Literary Festival Local best selling author Susan Lewis starred at the start of the Cotswold Edge Literary Festival, selling out her event. The week long festival, which also included Sathnam Sangera and Will Self was supported by Thornbury Voice.

Exciting ride promised at Sodbury Sportive THE Saddleback Sodbury Sportive is due to tackle the Cotswold Edge when it gets underway on 5 August.

Organisers say those taking part can expect an exciting and varied ride, with the event starting and finishing in Chipping Sodbury.

The route, which takes riders through some of the prettiest highways and byways of the region could prove challenging for some with the steep climbs of the Cotswold Edge a feature of the event.

The Sportive offers cyclists of all abilities the chance to choose between three distances - 30 miles, 60 and 100 miles, along well-signed and marshalled routes with mechanical back up and a broom wagon if they struggle to finish.

Organises say that the aim of the Sportive, which is run by volunteers, is to provide an experience that is equal to the best sportives in the UK. All profits from the event go to charity, with last year’s event raising £27,406 for various good causes.

Participants have feed stations along the route offering homemade food and treats, and there is free hot food back in Chipping Sodbury with massages on offer.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Audi A5 coupe 3.2 2007 - 2011: The head says ‘yes, stop fussing’ I wrestle with my opinion of Audis: On the one hand they are a paragon of German efficiency, deeply desirable, of high quality, performance orientated and with an enviable rallying and racing pedigree. Vorsprung durch technik and so on. On the other I can’t shake off the impression that they are over-priced products of the deeply troubled VW Group, the goto motor for aggressive tailgaters who will cut you up as soon as glare at you. A selection of Audi drivers, maybe those who drive rather than own their car, could benefit from some road manners.

I unconsciously lump them in with BMW drivers, which is maybe

unfair on both counts but I do it regardless. In the meantime, Audi plough on as masters of brand management, and their halo ‘S’ and ‘RS’ models help to sell millions of dreary low spec lease hire motorway mile munchers. Sitting somewhere in the middle are the larger petrol-engined Audis, unfairly overlooked in the UK. This month’s A5 coupe, in ‘S-Line’ spec and fitted with the 3.2 V6, might just be one of the sweet spots in Audi’s colossal range. Is it enough to make my mind up?

The A5 coupe, launched in 2007, is still a great looking car – no arguments. It doesn’t have the flair of last month’s Brera, but what does outside of Italy? It does have proper back seats and a big boot though, and what’s more the engine is a total corker. The V6 is naturally aspirated, that is to say it doesn’t have a turbocharger or a supercharger (the latter of which

is used in the more powerful S5).

What is does have is 260bhp, although I reckon there’s much more under the bonnet than Audi are letting on – it feels a bit quicker than the Brera, even with an automatic gearbox. And that gearbox comes with flappy paddles and the ability to lock it into top on the motorway rather than forever kicking down when you want to press on. On test the V6 returned 26mpg, which isn’t great but it is far better than the Brera (try 22mpg for size…).

I suspect the manual gearbox option, which is as rare as hen’s teeth, might see you crack 30mpg if you try hard.

So, given that they are similar in price, power, performance and so forth am I suggesting you buy an A5 over a Brera? At the top and bottom of the A5 range, probably yes. There is no Brera comparison to the mighty A5 ‘S’ and ‘RS’

models, but you pay handsomely for the privilege. The 2.0 petrol A5, of which there are plenty around on the used market, has more than enough turbo-charged punch vs. lowlier Breras. You’ll also find it in Golf GTis and a myriad of other VW Group cars. Head to head, the Audi and Brera 3.2 coupes are a much closer call, but the Audi edges it for speed and handling. From behind the wheel I’d have the Audi. From the pavement, well, that’s a more subjective call to make.

Your wallet would thank you for choosing an A5 coupe as well – it saves you more than £200 in road tax each year over the Brera.

It is also likely to be more reliable (maybe not such a surprise). Audis aren’t infallible though, and you should make sure that the service history is comprehensive and ideally full of main dealer stamps, even at this age.

There is no doubt that the A5 coupe makes a beguiling proposition, especially with a V6 under the bonnet. I’d maybe hold out for a manual gearbox, or raid the piggy bank and stretch to the S5. And still I wrestle, probably unnecessarily, with the brand. Is it a bit ‘me too’, a bit unadventurous I ask myself? And then the answer comes ‘No, they’re just really, really good cars and therefore people buy lots of them. Stop being such a pseud’.

South Glos Show to celebrate fifth anniversary with a taste of Russia THIS year's South Gloucestershire Show will get a taste of Cossack life with the visit of the Stampede Stunt Company. The international Cossack warriors will perform their Dzhigitovka routine on horseback, highlighting their trick riding.

The South Glos Show is in on the 4 and 5 August, and organisers hope their fifth year will see record attendances at the show ground in Henfield.

Other attractions include a new birds of prey show in the main arena and a dog agility display. The country fair area will see the Wye Valley Axemen showing off their skills. The motoring filed with have vintage cars on display and there will also be a food festival marquee.

There’s also a busy schedule on the music stages with bands including The Stories, Limited Edition, Sockets UK and Neon Mirrors set to perform.

Thornbury athlete meets idol after learning they were both born with heart defects A PROMISING young athlete from Thornbury has met Olympic and World Champion runner Roger Black. The two have more than just athletics in common - both were born with congenital heart disease, but have defied the odds to pursue their dreams.

Luke Ball, 13, who trains with Yate & District Athletic Club, is one of the leading UK under-15 athletes in high jump, and last season was ranked in the UK’s top 3 in his age group in four different athletic events.

He met his athletics hero in support of the British Heart Foundation’s Face a Fear campaign, which encourages people to be fearless and conquer their biggest fear by the end of July to raise money for the charity’s life saving research.

The pair shared stories of

their triumphs on the track, compared medals and how they overcame hurdles on the road to success. Luke left feeling even

more motivated to follow in Roger’s footsteps, after Roger’s advice on how to succeed as a professional athlete.

Roger, 52, and Luke were both born with congenital heart disease, where a heart condition or a defect develops in the womb. Every day, 12 babies are diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and it can be potentially life-threatening.

Luke was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, where the arteries are plumbed the wrong way round and was operated on at just 12 weeks old. Roger was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition when he was 11 after it caused one of his heart valves to leak, and couldn’t take part in competitive sport until he was 13. Roger’s condition was closely monitored and he only ever missed one of his annual hospital appointments to go to the Atlanta Olympic Games in

1996, where he went on to win a silver medal.

Luke said: “Even though I have a heart condition I don’t see myself as any different to any of my athletic competitors and I’m just as determined to be successful. I take advice from my doctors at my annual heart check-ups and, although I may have to have further surgery in the future, I don’t let this hold me back. It was awesome to meet a track legend like Roger and to see his Olympic medal. I hope one day I will have one myself.”

Roger said: “It was fantastic to meet a fearless young athlete like Luke. I’ve never let my heart condition hold me back and it’s great to see that he isn’t either.

I’m proud to be a British Heart Foundation Ambassador and their research helps people like Luke and myself lead a fit and healthy life, ultimately enabling us to pursue our dreams to become athletes.”

Coast to coast - Rob completes 190 mile race dropping out, but Rob’s marker kept moving forward.

When racing over several days, strategy and experience are very important factors and the runners had to judge when to rest during the race. Rob stopped for an unconventional break after a period of heavy drizzle, resting on a discarded door on the side of a hill at 3am for 2 hours before picking up the pace again.

Understandably, the body starts to protest when put through such an ordeal and Rob’s feet were suffering after 150 miles of racing. However, Rob’s mental strength and tenacity drove him on to Robin Hood’s Bay, finishing in 12th place in a remarkable 80 hours 34:20 mins.

ROB Hopkins from Thornbury Running Club has a well earned reputation for taking on big and challenging events, including triple distance Ironman triathlons through Snowdonia National Park and fiendishly hard ultra-marathons.

Rob’s main goal for 2018 was the Northern Traverse, a 190mile self-supported non-stop race along Wainwrights coast to coast route in northern England.

Aside from the extreme distance, the course took the runners from St Bees on the west coast through 3 hilly national parks. The first of these was the Lake District, followed by the Yorkshire Dales and finally the North York Moors before finishing in Robin Hood’s Bay on the East Coast.

Rob was followed with great interest by his Thornbury teammates. His GPS receiver tracked his progress on the race website across the long red line, which crossed the breadth of the country. As the hours and days progressed, many of the other very experienced ultra-runners were falling by the wayside and

Thornbury Tennis Club in promotion hunt THORNBURY Tennis Club is enjoying a strong start to the summer season, with all four women’s teams and the top two men’s teams performing exceptionally well.

The Women Thornbury first team started their recent match second in the division, with opponents Portishead snapping at their heels. Sarah Hurley and Jo Hargreaves dominated the first rubber with a 6-2 6-0 win.

Accomplished juniors Brooke Daunton and Susanna Ogden fought gallantly, coming from a set down to level their first rubber only to lose a closely fought third set. Both second rubbers saw comprehensive wins for Thornbury to complete a strong 8-2 win and extend the lead over Portishead.

Thornbury seconds were in third position, one place behind Clevedon. Suzie Newman and Megan O’Connor secured a

Thornbury thirds hosted top of the table Hanham. Ally Weir played a true captain’s innings with some wonderful volleys and Carole Boulton provided solid support to secure the win. They then played a very competitive rubber, ultimately losing out in the deciding set. Gill Harrison and Veronica Jones put up a good fight in their two rubbers but came off second best.

Thornbury fourth team and Portishead were joint leaders of their division, making it a vital match. The team comprising Dawn Parker & Sian Mann and Judith Ogden & Kirsty Daunton fought hard with close rubbers throughout, but came away empty handed.

The Men The firsts have made a great start to the season. The experience of Josh White, Wayne Russell and Luke Harrison has combined with the energy and enthusiasm of talented junior, Kyle Broadley,

to put the team in third place in their league. Kyle has made huge strides over the last year and this helped the firsts in their top of the table clash with Writhlington.

Writhlington had a near perfect record coming into the tie but, with a man of the match performance, Kyle led the way to a convincing win for Thornbury, leapfrogging Writhlington in the league.

The seconds have also made an excellent start to the season. Nick Mason, Brendan Wilde, Felix Boyes and Freddie Savage hit form early to take Thornbury to the top of the table.

The crunch came when they met second place local rivals Almondsbury. After 3 hours of tennis both second rubbers ended in third set defeats, meaning they were knocked off the top spot.

The thirds and fourths have had a difficult start to the year, hampered by numerous injuries and untested partnerships. The thirds, led by the talented left handed partnership of Malcolm Worster and Mike Peatheyjohns, along with the in-form Will Worster have recovered to midtable with back to back victories in their last two games. The fourths are hitting form with the return of some injured players.

They have picked up 16 points, including two overall victories, in their last three matches and are now climbing the table.

The fifths continue to fight hard and gain good experience.

The commitment and work rate of Steve Donkin, Adam Mann, Mark Collins and Martin Scudamore is paying dividends.

n SPORT THE sun has finally set on what must be the most memorable season in Thornbury Town Football Club’s history, Malcom Carr writes. After becoming champions of the Marcliff Gloucestershire County League with 5 games to spare, they put the icing on the cake by completing a League and Cup double by beating Frampton United 1-0 in the Les James League Cup Final.

Despite a backlog of fixtures as a result of postponements, Thornbury managed to maintain their winning ways putting together a run of 15 successive wins stretching back to 20 January - their last defeat was on 4 November last year.

Town maintained their position as League leaders from the end of September and whilst clubs below them had games in hand, Thornbury’s consistency meant they had no chance of overhauling the leaders. In the end skipper Pete Fowler’s goal in a 1-0 win at AEK Boco saw Town become County League champions by 15 points. They were the top scorers in the League as well as having the meanest defence. Thornbury’s

Club appeals to FA over division for next year THORNBURY Town have made an appeal to The Football Association after being placed in the Hellenic League rather than the Toolstation Western League as they had been expecting.

The decision came as a surprise for the Club, and the Western League, and they have appealed the decision. The FA’s League Council at Wembley Stadium will make the decision. Whichever league Thornbury end up playing in next season, it will be the highest level that the Club will have played at in its history, after being promoted as champions last season.

Unfortunately James has found it necessary

to step down from the role for next season, and the club are now inviting applications from anyone interested in taking on this important role.

The two U18 sides also had good seasons and were always in with a shout of challenging for their respective league titles.

However in the end the Colts side had to be content with a runners-up spot following a final day 3-0 win against Bristol Central whilst the Reds side missed out on the runnersup slot in their division after slipping to defeat in their last two games.

Thornbury continue to enjoy great start to the season THORNBURY Cricket club first team are in second place in their league after losing just two of the first seven games of the season.

Their good form was in evidence against Corsham.

Chasing 160 Thornbury reached the total in 17 overs, with Marc Lezar hitting a century off just 60 balls which included 12 fours and 5 sixes, whilst brother Dan finished 49 not out from 39 balls Danny Slade, Tom Bradley, Dan Davis and Harry Wormwell have all picked up 10 wickets or more with skipper Luke Davis adding to a formidable bowling attack Dan Davis still leads the way with 299 runs at an average of 42, but with Luke Davis, Dan Lezar, Marc Lezar and Sam Summerfield all averaging in the 40’s the batting line up also has plenty of strength in depth As Thornbury Voice went to press, Thornbury were hosting Rockhampton in the first of the

hugely anticipated local derbies between the clubs.

Thornbury second team still have a 100% record and are 34 points clear at the top of the Gloucestershire County Cricket League Division 2, with recent victories over Hatherley & Reddings, Woodmancote, Gloucester AIW & Shurdington Stand out performances came from Praneel Choughle who scored 51 against Woodmancote & 54 against Shurdington, Jimmy Tunnicliffe who hit a 76 ball 87 against Gloucester AIW and 67 against Shurdington and Josh Slade who scored 67 against Hatherley & Reddings. Perhaps the most impressive innings came from Josh Riggs who hit his maiden second team century at the age of 16, making 109, also against shurdington With the ball Sam Williams, Alex Allen, Jon Oakey and James Tunnicliffe have all taken wickets.

AN under 11 boys team from Tockington Manor School have been crowned champions in the finals of a UK wide swimming competition for private schools.

The Independent Association of Prep Schools held their national swimming finals at the London Aquatic Centre in Queen Elizabeth Park.

The Under 11’s swam in the 8x25 metre relay, and took the lead in the final 50 metres, winning by 10 hundredths of a second.

Bernie Hinchliffe, Head of Swimming at Tockington Manor School said: “We are incredibly proud of all of our swimmers who made it to the national finals. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to swim in the Olympic pool.

Congratulations to national champions Alex, James, Henry, Toby, James, Gabe, Cole and Oliver.”

Jake, a year 8 pupil was awarded a silver medal for the butterfly, winning with a time of 13.06 seconds.
