Thornbury to continue as planning centre - for now MEETINGS to decide planning applications will continue in Thornbury after an 11th hour reprieve. Conservative controlled South Gloucestershire Council had sought to replace the East and West planning areas with a single entity that would hold meetings in Kingswood.

Turnberries Community Centre currently hosts meetings in Thornbury.

The plans had been attacked by the Liberal Democrats, who said it would adversely affect decisions being made over housing plans around Thornbury.

The plans, which would have also affected site visits and individuals rights to address planning meetings, have been put on hold by the new leader of South Gloucestershire Council, Toby Savage. Mr Savage took over as head of the council and the Conservative group from Matthew Riddle, and immediately postponed the plans, saying he wanted to consult with opposition councillors.

He warned that the present planning system costs almost

£1m a year and needs to change.

Reprieve for Thornbury planning meetings THE new leader of South Gloucestershire Council, has decided to halt controversial changes to the planning process that would have seen Thornbury stop hosting meetings.

Toby Savage, who is also the new Conservative leader on the council made the decision just days after taking over from Matthew Riddle.

The local authority was due to vote on proposals that would mean an end to meetings and appeals regarding planning applications in Thornbury.

Instead these would only have taken place in Kingswood.

After the closure of the council offices in Thornbury, meetings have been held in Turnberries community centre.

The ruling Conservatives had proposed a single committee for the whole authority area, instead of the two development control committees for the East and West which exist now. They had said that changes to the system were long overdue.

Mr Savage said: “Fresh leadership provides a fresh opportunity to review these proposals and engage with opposition councillors in a spirit of openness and cooperation.

We do need to make changes to a local system that hasn’t changed with the times. I don’t believe the existing set-up that the Council has historically opted for is serving the best interests of residents and the communities in which they live and work.”

Leader of South Gloucestershire Lib Dems, Claire Young said; “I welcome this

change of tack from the new Tory leader. Residents and opposition leaders were given no warning of these proposed sweeping changes before last week, and it looked as if the Conservatives were planning to push them through without cross-party consultation. I welcome Cllr Savage’s apology for the way this was mishandled and look forward to working with him in a constructive way to improve these proposals before they are brought back to Council in July.”

The proposed changes would have also meant local councillors being no longer able to request a site inspection for applications in their ward, or to refer contentious planning decision to a meeting of full council.

Local residents were also in line to loose the right to attend or ask questions at planning site inspections.

By ‘eck lad, Gromit’s coming to Thornbury THE daring duo have been to a few exotic places in their time, including the moon. It would seem that the next destination for Gromit, if not Wallace, is Thornbury.

The town is the destination for one of the Gromit models that are being prepared as part of Gromit Unleashed 2 - the latest Grand Appeal for the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Wallace, Gromit and arch villain Feathers McGraw will all feature on the trail which is backed by creators Aardman Animation, but it’s Gromit who will feature here.

The Thornbury Chamber of Commerce are behind bringing the much loved character to the town. The statue will be placed in the main area of the St Mary’s Centre. The Thornbury Gromit will be the most northerly on this year’s trail.

At the moment it’s not known which Gromit will grace Thornbury, as many of the

statues are still being painted by artists. Local businesses and individuals donated the money needed to bring Gromit to Thornbury.

Rowena Moncrieffe, chairman of Thornbury Chamber of Commerce said : “We are very excited that Gromit will be coming to visit Thornbury. With how popular the trail has been in the past, it would be great to see him bring in lots of new visitors to see what Thornbury has to offer”.

The first Gromit Unleashed event raised £2.3m for the Grand Appeal. It also allowed thousands of people to spend a large part of their summer following the arts trail, trying to visit the location of each statue.

n NEWS A THRIVING community shop run by volunteers has proved so successful that it’s donated money to local charities.

Oldbury on Severn Community shop and café has been running for over four years, staffed by approximately 40 local people. It’s open seven days a week and attracts cyclists and walkers.

Part of its original aim was to be able to support good causes through financial donations.

It’s done so well this financial year that local projects have benefitted.

A main grant of £1000 was given to the Oldbury Memorial Hall for improvements. St Arilda’s Church, Oldbury on Severn School, the Great Western Air Ambulance, and SARA (Severn Area Search and Rescue Association) were all given between £400 and £600.

Four other projects were allocated between £100 and £400. They were 4ward magazine, Beehive Baby & Toddler Group, and Thornbury Citizens Advice Bureau.

Charities Benefit from Community Shop’s Success Vice Chair of the shop, Chris Awde, says; “The Shop has not only provided a much-missed local service for the local Parish but has also brought the whole community together and there is a great spirit of friendship”.

He continued; “We are very proud to be able to donate the above sums, however it’s only been possible through the hard work and dedication of all our shop volunteers and the continued support of our members and our many customers. We hope the shop continues to go from strength to strength and that this time next year we will find ourselves in a position to make further donations.”

Campaign group joins opposition to proposed housing estate COUNTRYSIDE campaigners have added their voice to opposition against the latest large-scale housing plan for Thornbury.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has submitted an objection to the plan by Bovis Homes to build up to 370 homes on the north side of the town off Gloucester Road.

If the outline scheme is approved, it will extend housing out of the town towards the A38 across nearly 60 acres of agricultural land from Upper Morton to Crossways Lane at The Knapp.

It will also add even more homes to the many hundreds already built recently or which have been granted planning permission.

A large number of objections to the plan have been posted with South Gloucestershire Council, including from the residents action group TRAPP’D and the CPRE, as well as individual residents of the town.

The CPRE said the Bovis site, alongside the B4061, had not been identified in the local core strategy. Full story page 3.

ONE of the toughest obstacle races in the UK is to return to the Badminton Estate this summer. Known as the ‘Tough Mudder’, the 10 mile course consists of 20 difficult obstacles, and in addition, fire, ice, and electric shocks.

People come from across the country to take part, and to raise funds for their chosen charity.

This year the Badminton course has been totally revamped, with new obstacles to encounter, to test physical strength and stamina. There is no race to the finish line, and no winners.

Amongst the teams taking part is a group of women supporting Mencap, a national charity which aims to enable people with a learning disability to live their lives the way they choose.

Sophie Spiteri says; “This

isn’t your usual obstacle race.

It’s 12 miles of brutal SAS style obstacles. I’m not quite sure why I decided to sign up for it to be honest. I must be mad.”

“It will however be a fantastic way to raise money for a cause that lies very close to my heart.

I have worked at Mencap for almost five years, and it will be great to ‘give something back’ to an organisation that does so much fantastic work and for as many people from the local area to join us” Rachel Croshaw, Mencap’s fundraising events manager, said: “We’re delighted that Sophie and her team are taking on the Tough Mudder to raise money for Mencap. It’s a really tough challenge and the obstacles are always really hard – but everyone always says how much fun it is.”

n NEWS SIXTH formers at Castle School who’ve spent the last eight months volunteering have had their efforts recognised at an award ceremony.

They took part in the school’s volunteering programme, known as ‘Castle in the Community’. They became peer mentors for their classmates or volunteered for local charities and organisations in the town. Their roles included befriending, fundraising, charity shop work and reading buddies.

Some of the host organisations wrote extremely positive testimonials, one saying “I would not hesitate to recommend them to any future employer”, and another ‘It has been a very positive experience for us all’.

Mayor Councillor Helen Harrison presented the pupils with certificates in recognition of their outstanding contribution to Thornbury.

Kim Webb, Development coordinator for Thornbury Volunteer Centre, said “The students gain valuable work experience and life skills, and the organisations increase capacity and gain additional volunteer help”.

Developer fined thousands for failing to protect trees

A DEVELOPER has been fined nearly £7000 for failing to protect trees on a site in Castle Street, Thornbury, called Stokefield House.

Churchill Retirement Living, based in Hampshire, develops and runs retirement homes. It was turning Stokefield House into flats.

The planning permission conditions specified that root protection areas must be maintained away from construction activities to protect the trees.

tree officer on a routine visit.

A subsequent investigation by South Gloucestershire Council found that all three trees had in fact been damaged. The root damage means that they are now ineffective at drawing up water and nutrients which could have an impact on their lifespan.

Bristol Magistrates Court ordered Churchill to pay £6753.23 in fines and costs.

Churchill pleaded guilty to two counts of tree damage in contravention of a Tree Preservation Order. The company was fined £1,250 for each count and ordered to pay costs of £4,133.25 along with a victim surcharge of £120, totalling £6753.25.

Councillor Colin Hunt, Cabinet Member for Planning, Transport and the Strategic Environment, said: “Planning

Pop-up proves popular

A POP-UP store in Thornbury has proved an instant hit with shoppers in the town.

The shop, which supports the Thornbury Volunteer Centre, has been selling a wide range of good quality pre-owned goods, from clothing to furniture and toys.

This year the operation is based at 11 St Mary Street.

Kim Webb, Development co-ordinator of Thornbury Volunteer Centre was delighted with the first day's trading; "The shop was packed from the moment we opened to when we shut at 4pm. The DVD's, clothes and bric-a-brac were popular and it was lovely to see some of our "regulars" supporting us again.

We also had 3 new volunteers register which is an excellent start”.

The shop has been open in the week, and is scheduled to open again on Saturdays up to the 16 June. Organisers say it may open at other times as well.

New speed limit call to protect villagers

THE speed limit on a rural lane in Rangeworthy used by villagers with children and dogs could be reduced.

There are concerns about Wickwar Road between New Road and Old Wood Lane, because it has no footway for pedestrians.

The Parish Council has asked for a reduction from the current derestricted (60mph) limit to 30mph. It hopes that slower traffic would make the road

more attractive for walkers and cyclists.

Speed monitoring revealed that cars were travelling at an average of 30.3mph. This is high enough to support the proposed change.

Residents were invited to take part in an online survey to give their views. It closed at the end of May. The changes could be implemented by April 2019.

n NEWS A CHILDREN’S hospice charity, which covers South Gloucestershire, has received £10,000 of funding from The Big Lottery Fund, with money raised by National Lottery players.

Jessie May, which provides nursing care at home for terminally ill children and young people, has been awarded the grant for their ‘Let’s Talk Transition’ programme of work.

The programme is dedicated to supporting life-limited children who outlive their initial prognosis and need help in the transition period from Jessie May to adult services, across South Gloucestershire, Bristol, North Somerset, North East Somerset, Wiltshire and Bath.

The funding will enable ‘Let’s Talk Transition’ to bring young people together for a number of events where they can connect with each other, share stories, and be part of a supportive community. The programme will also run a number of graduation days to mark the phenomenal achievement of young people transitioning from Jessie May’s care.

The grant will also help pay for training on a range of issues around how to support young adults, as well as a number of support visits for families

Children’s charity awarded National Lottery funding whose children are about to transition to adult care services. These visits could include arranging an introductory visit to day care centres, help with filling out forms, financial advice and signposting to other agencies.

Jessie May has seen a marked increase in the number of young people reaching 19, the age of transition, with six young people due to graduate from Jessie May in 2018 and 31 young people on our caseload aged 14-19 who could graduate in the next five years.

Play area upgraded in time for school holidays A THORNBURY play area has received an upgrade thanks to money received from developers.

The play area at Streamleaze is ready in time for the summer holidays, with a new multi-play installation, a trampoline, and a new springer.

Councillor Clive Parkinson, Chair of the Playing Fields and Cemetery Committee said; “Thornbury Town Council is really pleased to be able to refresh the play area at Streamleaze and is delighted that the equipment has been installed ahead of the summer holidays so that it can be enjoyed!”

Councillor Helen Harrison, Mayor of Thornbury Town Council said; “I have been pleased to see that the new equipment has been well received already and many were making use of it during the good weather at the weekend.”

The Town Council received Section 106 funding from the developers of Frome Court House to enable the work to take place.

The council is carrying out a programme of play area improvements. The Mundy Playing Fields are next and should be completed in time for the summer school holiday in July.

Warning over future of community transport

COMMUNITY transport operators in Thornbury are warning that proposed government changes could threaten their future viability.

At present, local operators such as Green Community Travel, don’t have to apply for commercial licences, because they’re not making profit from their services. They use what’s known as section 19 or section 22 permits. In addition, they are able to keep training costs down by using the Minibus Driver’s Awareness Scheme (MiDAS).

But the government is considering changes in an

attempt to clarify how European Union regulations should apply to the sector.

Green Community Travel says the unintended impact will be a requirement for commercial licences and commercial minibus qualifications. The cost could mean that vital services are forced to close.

Community transport services take people to hospital or GP appointments, and are routinely used by youth groups and organisations supporting people who are vulnerable or have disabilities.

The artful politician picks up the prize SHE’S better known in South Gloucestershire as the new leader of the Liberal Democrats on the council.

But councillor Claire Young has an artful side - and not in a House of Cards way.

In her spare time she’s a keen photographer specialising in landscapes. A picture she took of a Welsh mountain has won second prize in a photographic competition.

Claire Young entered the wintry view of Sugar Loaf near Abergavenny in a competition run by magazine publisher CariAds Local Ltd, which asked for photos depicting scenes in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The photo will feature on the January page of their 2019 calendar and in an exhibition later this year.

Claire said: "Getting out in the countryside and taking photos is a great way to switch off for a few hours from the stresses of day to day life. I take photos for my own enjoyment and to record my walks so it's an added bonus to have them recognised

in this way. I am looking forward to attending the exhibition and seeing my photo on display alongside the other winning entries."

It’s not the first time Claire's photographs have caught a competition judge's eye.

Her autumnal photo of the Kennet and Avon Canal entitled "Reflections" won 1st prize in the 2014 VisitWiltshire/Wiltshire Life photographic competition.

Appeal for volunteers at ‘Hospital at home’ scheme frees up beds police misconduct hearings PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire are amongst 100 patients living near Southmead hospital to receive having acute healthcare at home in an effort to free up hospital beds.

The ‘Hospital at Home’ scheme introduced by the North Bristol NHS Trust is supported by research which shows that patients recover faster in a familiar environment.

Patients are visited at least once a day by specialist nurses, there is telephone support, and they are under the care of a consultant until their treatment is completed. They can go back into hospital at any time should they need to.

Since the project started in

January, there has been positive feedback from patients who say they feel more relaxed and more in control of their lives. It’s estimated that 483 bed days have been saved so far.

Reston Smith, Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia said: “We know people don’t like being away from home and spending longer in hospital than necessary. Patients suitable for Hospital at Home can benefit from their home comforts whilst receiving the same excellent healthcare from our team. We can easily adapt the service, and always continue their care in a hospital setting if needed”.

AVON and Somerset’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens is looking for people to sit on police officer misconduct hearing panels.

Three people are sought for the independent role. The PCC says they will need to have skills in integrity, independence and judgement, and be passionate about improving policing.

Successful candidates will be expected to participate in misconduct hearings as and when required. Allowances and expenses will be paid.

PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “Police officers are expected to demonstrate the highest levels of integrity and conduct in the service they provide. In cases where an officer may have fallen below these standards, local people have the right to expect the matter will be dealt with thoroughly and fairly.

“Becoming an independent

person assisting police officer misconduct panels requires the ability to make fair and evidence based judgements about an officer’s conduct as well as deciding on appropriate sanctions. As an impartial voice on the panel, your role will also provide assurance to our communities that conduct matters are treated seriously.”

“It is really important to involve independent local people in policing and I am pleased to be able to offer this opportunity.

I cannot do this role alone and want to hear from people who are committed to and passionate about improving policing.”

Doc Martin delights the Badminton crowds during guest appearance ACTOR Martin Clunes helped put puppet horse BHS Bertie through its dressage paces when he visited Badminton Horse Trials in his role as president of the British Horse Society.

The organisation was the event’s charity for the year and Mr Clunes - best known for his Doc Martin and Men Behaving Badly roles - joined past Badminton winner and former Bristol nurse Jane Holderness-Roddam in the main arena to see how Bertie operated.

n NEWS THE Berkeley Show promising to show visitors how agriculture has progressed over time. Organisers say this year’s show highlights the progression of agriculture through the years with displays of machinery from vintage tractors through to the latest farming technology.

The event, on Sunday 24 June also promises to stay in tune with the modern day trends to to encourage families with young families to attend.

This show will have a livestock ring, horse show area, dog show, with a horticultural and handicraft section giving show goers an opportunity to enter a variety of competitions including flower arranging, baking and homemade crafts.

n NEWS A TWO-year refurbishment project at Horton Court has been completed, with part of the National Trust property now set to be re-opened to the public.

The grade one-listed manor house, near Chipping Sodbury, was built from the remains of a 12th century Norman hall.

Renovation of historic Horton Court completed ahead of re-opening to public limited access will be offered by the trust.

However, the rest of the building will be leased out as a home so will remain private.

The repair scheme at what has been described as a highly significant property cost ÂŁ2 million, the details of which were revealed at a public meeting in April 2016.

Recently, many of those at the meeting were invited back to see what had been done and learn about the plans for the building’s future.

Horton Court had been given to the National Trust in the 1940s by Hilda Wills, a daughter of the Bristol tobacco family.

The trust used to lease it out as a home, with visitors also allowed in for a few days each year, but the last tenants left in 2008 and visits ended four years

later due to the poor condition of the premises.

Although closed, it was used on a number of occasions for filming, featuring in the TV series Poldark and Wolf Hall, as well as the BBC1 supernatural drama The Living and The Dead.

The trust said the latest renovation was aimed at allowing more natural light into the

building, improving drainage and resolving damp problems.

It said while the Norman hall was a rare survivor, there had been a number of additions and alterations to the house over the centuries, with the late 19th century eventually seeing the start of a period of neglect.

The trust aims to open Horton Court to visitors during July, August and September.

4th Thornbury Brownies have had a great month TANYA visited us from Coconut Kids so the Brownies were introduced to the world of yoga. We were visited by Explore Learning who ran a writing workshop where the Brownies wrote stories, based on a hero, to be entered into a National Young Writers Competition which will be judged by David Walliams and used towards their writers badge.

They've also been learning the valuable skill of first aid including dealing with burns and bleeds as well as managing a casualty, including putting an unconscious breathing casualty in the recovery position.

Local writer leads ticket sales for literary festival BAGSTONE based best selling author Susan Lewis has proved popular with people booking tickets for this month’s Cotswold Edge Literary Festival.

Susan, who has written over 50 books and has also written memoirs, is appearing at an afternoon tea event at Hampton’s Deli in Chipping Sodbury on June 16.

Tickets for one of the sittings has already sold out, with only a handful left for the other.

Interest for other events has also been strong. Author, broadcaster and journalist Will Self is appearing at the Bristol and Bath Science Park in Emersons Green on 20 June.

The author of The Boy with The Top Knot, Sathnam Sanghera is sharing insights into his best selling memoir and life working on the Times newspaper at an event at Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church on 23 June.

One of the other events gives people the chance to experience the relationship between booze and books, with the owner of the Bristol Wine School, Tristan Darby, overseeing an evening of tasting of wine and other drinks that are featured in famous literature.

BIDDERS were in for some big surprises when over 150 teddy bears from two private collections went under the hammer in the specialist toy section at Stroud Auction Rooms' May sale.

Exceptional results were achieved, mainly because all the bears were put in without reserve and with low estimates, encouraging hundreds of people to bid. The top selling bear, Mr Pickles from Charlie Bears' Isabelle Collection, made £500, while every bear did considerably better than its guide price suggested.

Owner and auctioneer Nick Bowkett said "We are always saying that if vendors trust the valuer's judgement and allow lots to be sold with sensible estimates and reserves, excellent results can be achieved. The success of these teddy bears proves the point.”

The bears were not the only stars of the toy section. The auction's top selling lot was Jaques of London Staunton carved ivory library chess set, which sold for £3,600, and a German carved bone figural chess set made £2,000.

Trains and diecasts also met expectations, with a Hornby Dublo Southern Railway tank goods train set in original box selling for £600, and a Wrenn Queen Elizabeth locomotive in blue livery making £550.

manufacturers and high quality items. A Royal Crown Derby Lombardy pattern dinner, tea and coffee service achieved £3,000, while a Goldscheider figurine Butterfly Girl sold for £1,200. Seven 18th century tiles made £220 and the smallest piece of Moorcroft in the sale made the most, £440, due to its age and rare Leaf and Berry pattern. A large collection of Beswick Beatrix Potter figures stirred interest among both traders and collectors, with a rare Duchess with Flowers realising £800.

In medals and militaria, the highest selling medal was a Victorian Naval General Service medal with a Syria clasp, which sold in the room to a collector for £500. Several Australian infantry medals performed much better than anticipated and military badges and insignia also sold well.

Quite a few swords realised prices in the high hundreds, with a British 1821 pattern Light Cavalry sword

by Wilkinson selling for £950.

Several good quality bayonets realised £200-300.

Quirkiest lot of the auction was a child's battery-powered Land Rover, which received enormous interest from children of all ages and eventually sold for £700.

A close runner-up was a 16ft Falmouth boat and trailer, with original receipt (£650).

The next auction (June 13-15) focuses on jewellery and silver plus some very interesting clocks. There are also hundreds of lots of vinyl records with some rarities worth keeping an eye on. Other specialist sections include bijouterie, watches, coins, musical instruments and fine furniture.

Double the fun for flower fans PEOPLE are being invited to take in two green fingered events in one day this month.

Thornbury in Bloom are having an open day in the grounds of Thornbury Castle on Saturday 9 June between 1pm and 5pm. New leader at the helm of council COUNCILLOR Toby Savage has been elected as the new leader of South Gloucestershire Council, after becoming the new leader of the Conservative group, who have an overall majority.

The previous leader Councillor Matthew Riddle had decided not to seek re-election, saying that he believed that new energy was needed in the post ahead of the 2019 local authority elections.

Mr Savage, 35, grew up in Thornbury and Olveston, and attended Marlwood School.

He’s been the elected member for Longwell Green since 2015, and has held the role of Deputy leader, including the portfolio for Schools, Skills and Employment.

He will continue with the latter in addition to his new duties as Council leader.

His job is in communications, and he previously served as a volunteer police officer for the Avon and Somerset 18/05/2 Constabulary for 5 years.

Councillor Savage said; “Having been born and brought up in South Gloucestershire, I am truly humbled to have been elected to this role and delighted to have been supported unanimously by my Group, which allows us to press onward with the same energy and unity we have always had.”

In addition to the election of the group leader, Councillor Jon Hunt (Con, Downend) and Councillor Erica Williams (Con, Bitton) were also elected to serve as Deputy Leaders.

The Pump

Inauguration of the replica pump in 1984 IT may be more of a traffic island than a vital source of clean drinking water nowadays, but the pump in Thornbury has become one of the defining images of the town. It’s also been the subject of controversy over the last two and a half centuries.

There had been an older pump which was part of the old White Hart pub near The Plain at the bottom of the High Street for centuries. This older pump was probably the one referred to in the Gloucestershire Quarter Sessions Order Book at Michaelmas 1725.

“Inhabitants of Thornbury indicted for not repairing their Town or common pump. Fined £10 to be levied and raised..….to be expended on the reparation of the said town or Common Pump“.

When the White Hart pub was demolished to become a bank in 1857 it was agreed that the original well could stay near its wall, but the bank also paid for something rather more conspicuous to be built outside their premises.

The parish records of St Mary’s Church show that the new well was dug at The Plain in November 1859. A pump was also installed.

Although once the pump was a daily necessity for Thornbury residents, from Victorian times onwards it became the subject of fierce debate and controversy, mainly over whether it should stay.

A newspaper report in 1924 said the idea of removing the pump was first mooted when it

was suggested it be replaced with a memorial to Queen Victoria. This idea was vetoed.

However in 1919 the possibility of removing it was again introduced – this time to replace it with a memorial to those who fell in First World War. It was in the 1920’s when the pump became a real bone of contention.

In 1923 the issue of road safety was the subject of a local newspaper report. It recommended caution when “rounding the dangerous corner at The Plain.” Apparently a touring car had come to grief through not taking a “wide enough sweep.”

The article went on to say “Presumably sentiment counts a lot in this Town when the obsolete pump there is allowed to remain a source of danger to residents and visitors alike. Possibly a fatal accident may stir somebody to action.”

In 1924 the Rural District Council decided that it was an obstruction removed the pump on Monday September 15th.

One hundred and thirty two ratepayers signed a letter to the District Council demanding the return of the Pump. One person wrote and asked how much longer he would have to wait before he could wash his trap.

On October 4th a protest meeting of “the electors of the special drainage district of Thornbury” was called. At the meeting Charles Symes argued strongly that the road was 36 feet wide, that there was enough room for five cars to pass abreast, that the pump had been there for generations and was a public well and that no accidents had ever happened as a result of the pump being in the road.

A resolution stated that the pump should not have been removed without the consent of the ratepayers and ordered for it to be returned and reinstated and there was a discussion about whether the councillors concerned with removing it should pay for its replacement and that of the two gas lamps that had been on it.

The Council took legal opinion and decided that the pump had been installed illegally on the highway where it was an obstruction and should there be an accident the Rural District Council would be liable. The pump was once again removed.

The saga of the Pump was brought full circle in 1984 when a

Thus the final irony in the story of the pump is that its restoration was part of a traffic safety measure.

The new pump is now part of the image of Thornbury and is a beautiful addition to the town’s entry into the Britain in Bloom competition. The canopy around it was designed by a local architect, John Webster, and based on the original design. The work was completed by craftsmen at Almondsbury Forge.

The pump itself was an original Thornbury pump from a different site near the old market. It was donated by Lyndon Hawkins who had rescued it from the junction of Bath Road and Rock Street when it was removed as a health hazard, after its water source had become polluted.

Amazing rhubarb

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury.

She’s teamed up with Thornbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

THIS month my article is about good old rhubarb. Rhubarb is a bit like Marmite, you either hate it or love it. Many of us have horrid memories of overcooked, stringy rhubarb and lumpy custard served to us at school dinners, but it doesn’t have to be like that. Cooked well, it is a thing of enormous beauty. It is also very versatile and has an incredible history.

Rhubarb dates back to ancient China where it was used as a drug and a medicine. It was used for a variety of ailments, including gut, lung and liver problems.

First used in English cookery in the eighteenth century, it has continued to appear on traditional menus in its many guises. Rhubarb crumble, tart, jam, unusually served with mackerel or even used to flavour gin, the variations are endless.

I hope that you’ll give this very easy Rhubarb Fool a try, even if you haven’t previously been much of a fan. It’s sensational, especially after

a rich main course or oily fish. It’s not low on the calories, with best butter and double cream being two of the ingredients. But I hope you’ll agree the taste is worth the calories.

Rhubarb Fool When buying rhubarb choose firm, crisp and blemish-free stalks .If the leaves are still attached make sure they look fresh and not wilted.

Makes 4 – 6 small individual glasses.

Ingredients: • Rhubarb – 450g (about a pound) • Unsalted butter- 110g(4oz) cut into small pieces • Double cream- 150ml/g(5 fl oz) • Golden caster sugar- 3 tablespoons • Orange juice- 2 tbsps Here’s what you do: 1. Remove any leaves and trim the ends from the rhubarb . Then wash the fruit.

2. Cut the rhubarb into 2.5 cm (1 inch ) chunks.

3. Place the fruit in a saucepan with the butter, sugar and the orange juice.

4. Melt the butter over a medium heat stirring gently.

5. Once the butter has melted

continue to cook the rhubarb for about 5 mins or until the fruit is well-softened.

6. Reserve a little of the rhubarb to go on top of each glass.

7. Lightly mash the fruit with a fork.

Leave to one side to cool.

8. Then whip the cream ‘til it stands in soft peaks.

9. Once the rhubarb has cooled, gently stir in the cream. Don’t overmix as a swirled effect looks pretty.

10. S poon into small glasses or dishes.

11. D ecorate with the fruit you left to one side.

12. Refrigerate the fool for 3 or 4 hours before serving.

Cook’s Tip You can ring the changes by using other fruit like gooseberries or apricots.

n LOCAL MP

Tooth and nail, we must continue to keep up the fight against Buckover AS many voice readers will know by now, the ‘Joint Spatial Plan’, or proposal to see a 3,000 house ‘garden village’ placed on the very fringes of Thornbury, has now been officially submitted to Government.

The next stages and processes involved mean that two independent inspectors have been appointed to assess the ‘soundness’ of the plan. Now as I hope readers are aware by now, as our MP, I share and have campaigned fiercely upon our belief that the proposal to slap such a vast extension on the edge of community, without a clear plan as to support it, is anything but sound.

It is on that basis that I have fought hard at every step; in the early stages with my survey, in parliament raising this with ministers at every opportunity, and at each ‘consultation’ - keeping up the fight alongside campaign groups and residents alike.

It has been a long drawn out fight, and we have had some success along the way, with Government, after many meetings, refusing to support direct or indirect bids to seek practical help for the Council to ‘get it over the line’ however despite this, the proposals have slowly ground forward.

Now as the process takes us to this next crucial stage, I have again gone back into the fray, and have demanded that as part of this next process, that Inspectors take the unusual step and allow our community the time, hearings, and extra days to place extra focus and scrutiny on the Buckover proposals.

It is not guaranteed but thanks to your help in filling out my surveys, and your support we have never been stronger in our calls for this opportunity.

Alongside this as I am sure you will be aware the Council is now under fresh leadership, as a new administration led by Councillor Toby Savage (who has lived, was educated and has grown up in Thornbury) takes shape, I will be working alongside him to re-engage on the issue, where a fresh leadership provides a fresh opportunity to take a change of direction for the better.

During this process I can appreciate that many residents may have lost hope in our battle.

However as your MP, who has been side by side with residents on this

issue, I urge you all to keep the faith for what will be a crucial point in the future of this ill-thought proposal.

TWENTY years ago Alfa sales really took off in the UK – the wonderful 156 and a host of other fabulouslooking cars sold so well that there was a fair chance you would see one out on the road. Today sales are slowly on their way back up after a recent nadir. Alfa’s first SUV is selling well, although I don’t see many examples of it or the Giulia saloon around Bristol. And this is a crying shame, because Alfas remain a terrific drive and the firm sorted their reliability and build quality issues years ago. For the used buyer it means that there are plenty of well-priced Alfas available from a period when the brand was

selling well. I’ve chosen the kneetremblingly attractive Brera ‘S’ in V6 form for this month’s review, as it still offers something different and a bit special.

Launched in 2006, the Brera disappointed – it was overweight and underpowered. The 2.2 petrol was flaccid, the 3.2 Vauxhallsourced V6 was accused of being not powerful enough and the diesel was, well, a diesel. Sales disappointed, and so in 2008 Alfa joined forces with the rally and tuning company Prodrive to produce a bespoke Brera ‘S’ just for the UK. Production was limited to 500 cars, but stopped at just 250 due to poor sales – the damage had already been done. If you want a Brera, you simply must hunt down the rare ‘S’ model and don’t consider anything other than the V6. Prodrive tuned the suspension for poor UK roads with

new springs and dampers, added a bespoke exhaust system to help the V6 breathe and Alfa chucked in every extra on the options list.

The leather dashboard and ‘S’ seats are a classy touch, the lightweight 19 inch wheels fill the arches nicely and the whole car just looks perfectly proportioned.

On start up the V6 burbles like no Vauxhall engine ever did, and you forget the humble origins immediately. Behind the wheel the Brera feels right – steering, pedal and gearstick weighting are exactly as I would want them although for some they will seem heavy. On the move the ride is quiet, the seats supportive and the engine pulls well. It is quick without being rapid; performance is progressive rather than breath-taking. The Brera was always too heavy – the chassis was originally destined for a Saab – and the S model still feels it despite

some attempts to shed weight.

But it compensates for these downsides with that well-worn Alfa cliché of character. There’s no room for your mother in law in the back seats, and yes the boot is too small and hard to access to squash her in there either, but who cares when the Brera looks and drives with such inherent soul?

So what should the used buyer look out for? Prices of the standard Brera are in free-fall and may even have bottomed out, but the ‘S’ is very sought after by those in the know. My pampered test model only has 30k miles on the clock and would cost you the thick end of £15k from a dealer. The paintwork, which looks deep and lustrous, is prone to stone chips. Check the timing chain on higher mileage models – they have been known to stretch and that is a very expensive fix.

Of all the cars I’ve owned, my Alfa 166 is the one I regret selling – sold to a brave bloke from Bedford with a gearbox on the way out. It gave some mechanical trouble, drank fuel at an alarming rate and I never got the steering right. And I’d have it back in a flash (with the gearbox fixed). Their survival may look more secure than it did a few years ago, but I still strongly urge you to try Alfa ownership to realise that a car can be so much more than a way to get you from A to B. n SPORT JONELLE Price became the first woman to win the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials for 11 years after a masterclass performance with the mare Classic Moet.

Girl power won the day at the international, where huge crowds followed the action from the opening dressage phase to the testing cross-country course and finally over the deciding showjumping track.

It was a first Badminton title for Price and her first win at the highest four-star level of the sport, coming just ten months after having her baby son Otis.

But the event’s outcome went right to the wire, with Price’s outstanding cross-country round in the fastest time of the day giving her the lead before the showjumping.

While matching Oliver Townend and Ballaghmore Class on 28 penalties, Price gained the advantage due to being closest to the cross-country optimum time.

With no room for showjumping errors, she and Classic Moet rattled several poles but jumped clear to maintain their position.

Townend and Ballaghmore Class had two showjumps down to drop to fifth place but a clear round on his second ride Cooley SRS rocketed that horse into the runner-up slot.

British team member Ros Canter was third on Allstar B, with Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul in fourth place.

Badminton 2016 winners, the reigning Olympic champion Michael Jung and La Biosthetique Sam, were tenth in the horse’s last Badminton appearance.

Price, a West Country-based New Zealander, had only been in 22nd place after the dressage phase, where a change to the scoring meant positions were tighter and there was a greater emphasis on crosscountry performances.

But after weeks of rain and with a rising temperature, the ground was tacky and tiring, with no combinations getting round Eric Winter’s cross-country track within the time allowed.

Of 78 starters, South Gloucestershire’s Harry Meade finished 16th with Away Cruising, while Bristol’s Dani Evans was 17th on Smart Time. Lissa Green, daughter of six-time Badminton winner Lucinda Green, completed with Hollyfield, a horse part-owned by Thornbury’s former Olympic rowing star Alison Gill. * CONTROVERSY surrounded the crosscountry riding of Oliver Townend on both of his horses, with officials of the sport’s governing body, the FEI, giving him an official warning regarding his over-use of the whip.

In an apology, Townend said: “I’m so disappointed and upset about the way I rode.

But the British Horse Society, which promotes the prevention of cruelty and harm to horses and was Badminton’s official charity of the year, said it would raise its concerns with the FEI. Gemma Stanford, its director of welfare, said: “The behaviour displayed by Oliver Townend was completely unacceptable. We strongly believe that the sanctions given to Mr Townend by the FEI were not high enough in this particular case.”

ROCKHAMPTON Cricket Club has started the season well.

The first team won their opening two matches in The Cricket Village Cup the competition that saw the club go all the way to the final at Lords in 2013.

The second team have already notched up a number of wins in the third division of the Greene King Gloucestershire County League and the third eleven started the season with a win at Eastcombe.

The fourth eleven is very much a family affair, with a recent match consisting of a team of 3 Twemlows, 3 Sturts, 2 Piketts, 2 Welshs and a lone Vercoe (who is the father of U11 player Oliver).

The under 11s have have won all of their matches so far this season as well.

Rockhampton have also been hosting Gloucestershire 2nd XI matches. The match in April against Ireland was cancelled because of rain, but they did host the games against Surrey and Glamorgan in the 2nd XI

Thornbury ride high in early season standings THORNBURY Cricket club have enjoyed a great start to the new season, with the first team currently top of the West of England Premier 2 Glos/Wilt league.

It comes after victories against Burbage and Easton Royal by 58 runs, Trowbridge by 181 runs and Westbury & District by 25 runs.

Thornbury batting has prospered, amassing around 300 runs in all the games, backed up by strong and consistent bowling.

Dan Davis made 88, Kyp Bridgen 64 and Dan Lezar 79 not out against Burbage. Davis was in the runs again with 54 against Trowbridge, with Nick Stovold 52 and Luke Davis 76 also pitching in. In the match against Westbury Dan Davis continued his hot streak with 89 and Luke Davis pitched in with 67.

Slade claiming 5 for 47 against Westbury.

The return of the Lezar boys to the club this season after a few years away - Dan from Downend and Marc from Clevedon - has injected experience and a greater balance to a young team that are now hoping to challenge at the top of the league this season after a few years hovering around the middle of the table.

The second team are also unbeaten and top of the Gloucestershire County Cricket League Division 2, with wins over Ullenwood Bharat, Cinderford St John and Cranham.

Josh Riggs scored 74 against Cinderford and Jon Oakey had figures of 4 for 19 against Ullenwood.

The third and fourth teams have also enjoyed great starts in the Bristol & District Cricket Leagues, with both teams sitting in third position in their leagues.

n SPORT THORNBURY Tennis Club have started the Avon Summer League at a sprint. All four women’s teams started the campaign by winning points.

The seconds and thirds claimed top points with some great play despite the drizzle.

The sun had come out for the second round of matches, but the result stayed the same.

Sarah Hurley and Jo Hargreaves along with Brooke Daunton and Susanna Ogden represented the first team and won 10:0 at home again David Lloyd Bristol’s first team.

It proved to be a long, tense and competitive match for our two juniors finishing at 10.20pm with the lengthy rallies ultimately ending in victory.

They showed maturity beyond their years when playing a third set tie break (7-5).

Amongst those watching were Brooke and Susanna’s mums, Kirstie and Judith, who had earlier also won their matches.

Their success, along with that of their team-mates, Claire Hawkins and Linda Mantle gave the fourth team a comprehensive 10:0 victory against Bath.

The second team played away against a tough team from Bristol Central.

Thornbury’s women start season in great form took a tumble and sustained a minor head injury and had to forfeit two matches. Megan O’Connor & Suzie Newman lost their first match, but won their second as the light faded.

The men’s teams have had a mixed start to the league season.

The first and second teams have performed well with the second team taking 16 out of a possible 20 points during the first two weeks.

The third, fourth and fifth teams have all suffered from an injury plagued start to the season and will now be looking to recover as they move onto their third fixture with key players returning to fitness.

Charity Tournament A GROUP of players took part in a charity tennis tournament at Thornbury Tennis Club, in aid of East African Playgrounds. The numbers were healthy despite competition from the Royal Wedding and the FA Cup Final.

A mixed doubles charity tournament raised £200 for East African Playgrounds.

With glorious weather, high spirits and raffle prizes kindly donated by Taylor Tennis, the event raised over £200 for the charity. The winners were Linda Mantle and Keith Spalding, with Olly Hounsfield, a non-member, impressing with his play too.

Thornbury runner wins 50 mile race THORNBURY Running Club’s Nick Williams braved the heat and the hills to triumph in the Winchcombe Cross Ultra, a 50-mile off road race in the Cotswolds.

Despite the arduous conditions, Nick maintained a constant pace during the 4-lap race and was in second position after 37 miles of racing at the end of the third lap.

As the race leader was starting to fade, Nick surged into the lead in the final lap, pressing home his advantage to win the race by over 20 minutes in a time of 8 hours 46:26 mins.

Kevin Arnold has been a regular at the Fleet Half Marathon for over 10 years, which also serves as the Army Half Marathon Championships.

After an injury affected performance last year, Kevin bounced back with his best result since 2011 in a time of 1 hour 35:27 mins, a result good enough

for second place in the Army’s M45 age category.

Joanne Plumbley, Dylan Roberts and Taryn Roberts have taken part in The Butcombe Trail, a daunting 50-mile race through the Mendip hills and surrounding villages.

All 3 athletes have competed in multiple Ironman triathlons between them and are used to taking on big challenges. In wet and windy conditions they finished in equal 35th place in a time of 10 hours 38:42 mins.

Newport Marathon hosted its first marathon in cold conditions, as almost 3500 runners took part in the Marathon and a further 2500 entered a 10k event and family mile. Matt Johnstone was the lone Thornbury RC entrant on the day. After a more cautious start, he tried to increase the pace in the second half of the race and started to overtake more runners. However, this increased optimism came

n SPORT This year’s London Marathon was confirmed as the hottest in its 37 year history and the 5 Thornbury RC members completed the race raising over £6,000 for charity between them.

Target times had to be quickly recalculated and fancy-dress costumes were ditched, as a more cautious approach and self-preservation were the order of the day.

Andrew Darton had promised this would be his third and final London Marathon. After completing the first half in a very respectable 1 hour 39 mins, he succumbed to the heat at the 16mile mark, jogging the majority of the race thereafter. Andrew was still the only Thornbury runner to break the 4 hour barrier in a time of 3 hours 54:16 mins.

Kevin Cundy is an experienced marathon racer and was next in a time of 4 hours 44:05 mins.

Chris Foley finished just behind Kevin in 4 hours 44:44 and was 107th in the 65-69 yr

olds age category.

This was Sean Underwood’s first attempt over the full marathon distance since taking up running in 2016.

Unfortunately, his preparation for Sunday’s race was dogged by a nagging knee problem, but after overcoming much bigger battles losing weight and raising significant sums for his chosen charity, he got to the finish in 5 hours 20 seconds.

After completing 6 half marathons in 2017, Rachel Murphy was another making her debut over the full 26.2-mile distance. Rachel was pushed along by the huge support from the crowd and fellow runners and crossed the line in 6 hours 37:54 mins.
