Thornbury to continue as planning centre - for now MEETINGS to decide planning applications will continue in Thornbury after an 11th hour reprieve. Conservative controlled South Gloucestershire Council had sought to replace the East and West planning areas with a single entity that would hold meetings in Kingswood. Turnberries Community Centre currently hosts meetings in Thornbury. The plans had been attacked by the Liberal Democrats, who said it would adversely affect decisions being made over housing plans around Thornbury. The plans, which would have also affected site visits and individuals rights to address planning meetings, have been put on hold by the new leader of South Gloucestershire Council, Toby Savage. Mr Savage took over as head of the council and the Conservative group from Matthew Riddle, and immediately postponed the plans, saying he wanted to consult with opposition councillors.
He warned that the present planning system costs almost
£1m a year and needs to change. More, Page 2.
