Vision for new Armstrong Hall takes step forward IT’S five years since ambitious plans by a group of Thornbury volunteers to turn the Armstrong Hall into a 500-seat theatre complex were axed after a long running attempt to achieve their dream.

Now, public support for a new hall on the Chapel Street site is hoped to finally see a rebuilding of the premises to ensure it remains the town’s main performance venue.

The campaign group ACT - Arts and Community in Thornbury - worked on their project for many years but eventually shelved it in 2013 on the grounds of viability.

But a desperate need to upgrade the hall resulted more recently in options being put forward to decide on the future of the facilities it provided.

With public support for the hall to be rebuilt, rather than just refurbished or even re-located to the Turnberries community building, town mayor Helen Harrison said a new building would create a “wonderful

legacy” for Thornbury.

But further work is required on governing and financing the £4.9 million project, as well

as the design of the hall and facilities before a final decision on the scheme can be made.

Major housing scheme Dismay at plans heads to public inquiry for Thornbury’s hospital site A CASE against a plan to build up to 370 homes on open farmland on the north side of Thornbury will be developed by opponents before a ten-day inquiry in the autumn.

As reported in Thornbury Voice last month, South Gloucestershire councillors were being recommended to say they would have rejected the controversial scheme for nearly 60 acres off Gloucester Road if they had been able to do so.

They subsequently followed the recommendation, after the Voice went to press, and voted unanimously against the outline application.

But it will be down to a planning inspector to make a formal decision on the proposal as South Gloucestershire Council had not determined the application within a designated period.

House builders Bovis and members of the Fear family lodged an appeal against the non-determination as a result of the delay and evidence from all sides will now be put before the inspector at a hearing in September.

However, the resolution made by members of South Gloucestershire’s development control committee will form the case to be presented by the council.

The scheme involves building on agricultural land stretching from Upper Morton to Crossways Lane at The Knapp, taking development further out of the town into the countryside towards Whitfield alongside the B4061.

Thornbury Town Council, pressure group TRAPP’D Thornbury Residents Against Poorly Planned Development - the Campaign to Protect Rural England and parish councillors in neighbouring Hill and Oldbury-on-Severn, as well as many individuals, are fighting to stop the building.

Opposition has been raised on a number of grounds, including development in open countryside, the unsustainable nature of the scheme and the harm it could cause to the hamlet of Upper Morton.

There is concern about the closeness of the site to that of the proposed Buckover garden village on Tortworth Estate land - a controversial scheme in itself - and fears of flooding downstream of Thornbury.

Objections have also been raised over increased traffic, road safety concerns and increased pressure from so many new households on the town’s GP surgeries, schools and sewerage systems.

THORNBURY could have up to just ten NHS community beds within a private nursing home under the latest plans for health and care services in South Gloucestershire.

A long-running campaign for better health provision in the town had led to hopes of more beds for rehabilitation and care, together with outpatient services and improved facilities for GPs. But the plans could see the hospital’s current 20 beds replaced with between just six and ten in a new 70/80-bed care or nursing home, with all rehabilitation beds going to the old Frenchay Hospital site.

Proposals for a new health centre on the Thornbury hospital site have also been met with some scepticism.

Thornbury councillor Maggie Tyrrell, the Liberal Democrat spokeswoman for adults and housing, said: "Those of us who have been fighting for years to get Thornbury the health services it needs have been here before.

“When you find your way through the fog of words and spin, what are they actually promising? When will it be built?

Who will pay for it? I hope that this time words will become reality."

Parliamentary spokeswoman, Claire Young, said: "Thornbury is growing rapidly and local services haven't kept up.

“Many people have told me how difficult it is to see a GP in the town so a new, larger health centre would be great, if the GPs can be found to staff it. I think for many though, it will be a case of we'll believe it when we see it."

Long time hospital campaigner, Councillor Shirley Holloway, said: "Once again Thornbury is being sold down the river by the NHS. This decision is unbelievable. Of course the aim is to treat more people at home, but this is not appropriate for everyone.”

The hospital currently provides rehabilitation, intermediate care, palliative care, a limited range of consultant-led outpatient clinics and community services such as physiotherapy.

The governing body of the new Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group said a full business case on the planned primary and community care hub at Thornbury would be completed by the autumn.

n NEWS FURTHER work will be needed in the next year to pursue the rebuilding of Thornbury’s Armstrong Hall to create “a wonderful legacy” for the town.

Public support for a new hall on the current site in Chapel Street led the Armstrong Hall Trust - whose sole managing trustee at present is Thornbury Town Council - to support the proposal.

Community consultation on three options saw 80 per cent (285) of those responding back a rebuild.

A further 18 per cent (62) supported refurbishment of the hall but only four people thought it should be relocated to an extended Turnberries community centre in Bath Road.

Five people either didn’t know, didn’t support any of the three options or came up with another idea.

A rebuild has been estimated at £4.9 million, while refurbishment would cost £2.85 million.

Although the option for Turnberries would involve building a large extension, there were concerns about insufficient space being available for performances.

Relocation would also involve selling the Armstrong Hall site for redevelopment to help fund the work at Turnberries, which is owned by South Gloucestershire Council.

The council said it would offer a 50 year lease in return for £4 million of investment into the

site, with further negotiations about managing and operating the facility to take place.

Councillor Clive Parkinson, chairman of the Armstrong Hall redevelopment group, said: “On balance, the Armstrong Hall Trust believes that at this time the new build option is the preferred route to take forward.

This is also the clear preferred option of the Thornbury public in their response to the consultations.

“The consultations have thrown up many questions and suggestions and the trust will consider all of these as it takes the project forward.

“The trust also wants to encourage individuals who have

experience or expertise in such a project to join the working group and help the town develop an exciting and appropriate successor to the existing Armstrong Hall that has served the town so well.”

Further work will now be done on design, facilities, governance and financing before final decisions are made and work commissioned.

Thornbury mayor Helen Harrison said the council had made a decision knowing it had the public’s support.

She said: “We hope the public will get involved in this exciting project for Thornbury and create a wonderful legacy for the town.”

Literary festival to showcase the art of drinking in a good novel IT can be argued that the perfect book needs to be read whilst holding a glass of something special in the other hand. Now people are to get a chance to investigate the role of drinking in literature at a festival event.

Organisers of the Cotswold Edge Literary Festival have organised an evening of books and beverages as part of the week long event in June.

The owner of the Bristol Wine School, Tristan Darby is going to be on hand to explain why,

from sherry in Shakespeare to fine wines in modern classics, drinks have always had a place in literature.

Kate and Keith duo in Cossham Hall concert SINGER-songwriter Kate Dimbleby will team up with harmonica player, guitarist and singer Keith Warmington for a concert in Thornbury’s Cossham Hall.

The duo will perform their own songs at the event on Saturday, May 19, which starts at 7.15pm.

The concert is part of a series of events to raise funds for the first phase of the Armstrong hall redevelopment project.

Kate Dimbleby has released six albums

and currently lives in Bristol.

Her father is broadcaster David Dimbleby and her mother Josceline is a trained classical singer turned cookery writer.

Half-century of entertainment celebrated in anniversary event TICKETS are on sale for an anniversary concert being staged

by Thornbury Musical Theatre Group to mark 50 years of entertaining audiences.

Fabulous at 50 will be performed three times on Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, in the town’s Armstrong Hall - nightly at 7.30pm and with a 2.30pm matinee on the Saturday.

Marlwood academy site chosen for free school A NEW special free school is set to be opened in Alveston within 17 months.

The school, to eventually accommodate 112 youngsters, will be built on the Marlwood School site and will be for children with severe learning difficulties, autism and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Once fully opened, it will provide schooling to children from nursery age to 19 but initially it will offer 32 places for nursery and primary age youngsters from September 2019.

Older pupils will then join the school over a three year period.

The announcement of the school for South Gloucestershire was made last summer after the Government said it would fund its

construction.

But there had to be a four-month process involving organisations interested in running it to submit their plans.

Those were then assessed

by South Gloucestershire Council and the Department for Education ahead of final approval from the Education Secretary.

Marlwood is part of the Castle School Education Trust (CSET) and its chief executive, Will Roberts, said: “Sharing this large site will help to ensure the future sustainability of Marlwood School by reducing overhead costs and bringing much needed capital investment to the site.”

specialist education services.

Significant numbers of children with learning disabilities are required to travel some distance to schools and services outside the district and the new school will help local families find a place closer to home.

Toby Savage, the council’s Cabinet member for schools, said: “As our population grows, so do the numbers of young people who need specialist support.

“We have already supported the expansion of existing special schools at New Siblands in Thornbury and Warmley Park but they are reaching their maximum capacity.

“Working alongside CSET at Marlwood means we will increase the availability of highsupport school places in brand new, purpose-built facilities.”

Award for support group

A GROUP which speaks for young people in care and those leaving the care system has been recognised with an award.

The British Youth Council award was made to the Experienced Panel in Care - EPIC - which consists of 15 to 25-yearolds in South Gloucestershire who have experience of being in care themselves.

As well as representing the views of young people like them, they also campaign on issues that affect them, such as council tax.

As a result of EPIC’s work, South Gloucestershire Council decided to support care leavers up to the age of 21 by paying their council tax bills for the next year.

EPIC received the Inspiring Project Award, which recognises the efforts made by projects to engage young people and give them a voice.

A certificate was presented to the group by Jon Hunt, the council’s Cabinet member for

MORE than £1,000 was raised through a concert organised by the Thornbury and District Cancer Research UK Committee.

String musicians who make up the Poet’s Quartet played to a packed house in the town’s United Reformed Church.

Although free to attend, a retiring collection brought in the donations.

The concert programme included works from Bach and Dvorak to Elgar and The Beatles.

Meanwhile, an event at the town’s Tesco store the following day raised more than £450 for the charity.

They also said full reports from each session would be made available to the public, while an exhibition would be held before submission of an outline planning application.

Tortworth Estate’s Robert Moreton said: "The estate has spent the last 18 months exploring opportunities, listening to local people and organisations and undertaking a wide range of technical work.

“We now believe the time is right to begin a series of local workshops to ensure that Buckover Garden Village is consciously planned, in collaboration with the widest range of local people as possible, all working towards the common goal of providing a truly sustainable 21st century community.”

THE first of a series of workshops organised by those behind plans for a 3,000-home garden village at Buckover has taken place - with opponents staging a silent protest.

The Tortworth Estate and developers St Modwen held the first workshop at Eastwood Park in Falfield.

Although they said the purpose was to “directly engage the local community in the planning process”, the event was by invitation only.

The estate and St Modwen said the workshops would continue until the summer, focusing on specific local people, land owners, businesses and service providers, with the results of each event “used to shape and inform the master planning of the garden village”.

Housing appeal decision expected in weeks

Developers bid to increase home numbers on Post Farm site

OPPONENTS of a scheme to build up to 350 homes at Cleve Park in Thornbury could hear the outcome of a planning inquiry by the end of May. An appeal was lodged by Welbeck Strategic Land against rejection of the proposal by South Gloucestershire Council.

Its plan also included a care home for the elderly and 14 self-build plots on the site at the junction of Morton Way and Grovesend Road.

It was refused by the council on the grounds of the harm it would do to the town.

Many people opposed to the plan attended the appeal hearing, which was conducted by inspector Clive Hughes.

His decision could be published at the end of May or early June.

EFFORTS are being made by developers to increase the number of houses to be built at the Post Farm site off Morton Street and Butt Lane.

The land is one of the series of controversial Thornbury sites targeted by house builders, with an original proposal for up to 175 homes eventually getting planning permission for up to 125 units.

The reduction was the result of concerns raised by planners that development should not extend into the most northern field on the site.

Now Linden Homes has submitted two more applications, which could result in the total number of houses reaching 171 if both

Woodland walk to hear the dawn chorus EARLY risers will hear the dawn chorus in Filnore Woods during a walk to identify and listen to the birds.

A 5am start at the woods, near Thornbury’s leisure centre, will give people the chance to distinguish the birds through their singing - done to defend their territory.

Jerry Dicker, of the Friends of Filnore Woods, said: “We have to be early because once it is daylight, they are busy collecting food for their nestlings and the concert is over.”

The event takes place on Sunday, April 29, and anyone who wants to go along should meet by the field gate on the far side of the leisure centre car park.

Customer satisfaction at Merlin reaches two-year “We are very happy with our home and very happy with the respect of your team.”

Overall satisfaction with the services a local housing association provides to its customers has reached a twoyear high.

Latest results from South Gloucestershire-based Merlin have revealed that its customer satisfaction in 2017-18 has risen to 86.4%, up from 83.6% 12 months ago. Customer satisfaction with the quality of their home and their neighbourhoods has also risen to 84.8% and 87.4% respectively.

And the housing association has seen a large increase in the numbers of customers happy with the repairs carried out to their home, with satisfaction rising from 77.4% a year ago to 82.4%.

One customer who responded to the latest survey said: “I don't contact Merlin very often, but when I do, it's usually for repairs which are carried out promptly.

Overall, I would say that I am very pleased with Merlin as a landlord.”

Another one said: “We are very happy with our home and very happy with the respect of your team. Thank you.”

While another customer said: “Merlin has always given good service. The service for older people is reassuring, and it’s good to have someone there to take your requests.”

Over the past year Merlin has introduced a new repairs policy to improve the number of repairs that are completed right first time. It has also invested millions of pounds in improving homes by fitting new kitchens, bathrooms, windows and doors and making them more energy efficient.

Although the vast majority of customers are either very satisfied or fairly satisfied with their home, their neighbourhood and the services they receive from Merlin, the housing association aims to do even better over the next 12 months. Merlin aims to increase overall satisfaction to 88% and satisfaction with people’s neighbourhoods to 90% by March 2019. And Merlin believes its partnership with fellow housing association Bromford will help increase customer satisfaction by rolling out Bromford’s innovative neighbourhood coaching approach to Merlin customers.

Work begins to improve Thornbury homes Local housing association Merlin has begun work in Thornbury to fit new external insulation to homes.

The homes in the town are among 144 homes that Merlin is refurbishing during the current year with the aim of making them warmer and cheaper to heat. As well as fitting new insulation, Merlin will also be carrying out repairs and redecorations to outbuildings, fences, gates and paths.

Pool dredging at former clay pits site improves habitat for wildlife RESTORATION work has been carried out to improve habitat at Littleton Brick Pits nature reserve.

The team from the Forgotten Landscape heritage project teamed up with Avon Wildlife Trust for the scheme in Littletonon-Severn.

The site had once been used for the extraction of clay to be used in brick production and was taken over by the trust in the 1980s.

It now has a mix of wetland with one large pool colonised by reed and three smaller ponds, along with wet woodland and scrub.

Among the birds to be

seen there are reed and sedge warblers, while several different species of dragonflies and damselflies can also be seen.

But during the past couple of decades, the reedbeds colonised the site to such an extent that there was little open water.

The restoration involved dredging an area of the large pool to re-establish some open water, re-profiling the ponds and pollarding a number of willows.

It is hoped the work will ensure the viability of the site for years to come, with annual management to be carried out by trust volunteers.

Although the site has limited access, the trust can be contacted

through its website to arrange a permit to visit.

The Forgotten Landscape project aims to conserve and improve the foreshore and coastal floodplain of the River Severn.

As recently reported in Thornbury Voice, a series of interpretation posts have started to be placed at locations such as Littleton and Whale Wharf to relate stories of the area.

Some of the locations for the posts will also feature toposcopes and one has now been placed in the churchyard at St Arilda’s in Oldbury-on-Severn to give commanding views of the countryside and river.

Popular Pop-up makes return THORNBURY Volunteer Centre is to run a pop-up shop as part of National Volunteer Week.

The shop will be at 11 St Mary Street, next door to TSB, in the St Mary Centre. It will open at 10am on Saturday 12 May and will continue all week. The aim is to bring volunteering into the shopping centre and raise the profile of the Volunteer Centre.

Last year at least 15 potential new volunteers registered.

The shop will also act as a way to raise funds for the centre, and organisers are looking for donations of good quality preowned goods from clothing to furniture, bric-a-brac and toys.

World’s best head for Badminton STARS of the eventing world will be at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials as they bid to win the sport’s most prestigious competition.

Andrew Nicholson, who finally won the international last year after a remarkable recovery from a serious neck injury that could have paralysed him 21 months earlier, returns with Nereo to defend their title.

However, the Wiltshire-based New Zealander has withdrawn his second ride, Jet Set, from the competition, which will see some 80 horse and rider partnerships take on the three phases of dressage, cross-country and showjumping from May 3-6.

The South Gloucestershire park will also host the Mitsubishi Cup for grassroots riders on Wednesday, May 2, ahead of the feature contest.

Nicholson will face tough competition from many of the best event riders during the challenge - not least from Germany’s Michael Jung, the current Olympic champion, and his superstar horse La Biosthetique Sam. Sam, who has carried Jung to world and European glory, as well as two consecutive Olympic titles, is due to be retired later this season so it will be his last run at Badminton.

The home side will be looking for victory

from the likes of past Badminton champions Oliver Townend and Pippa Funnell, as well as other team GB riders such as Gemma Tattersall and South Gloucestershire’s Harry Meade.

Meanwhile, British team stalwart Kristina Cook is racing to recover from a dislocated shoulder in time to compete, while the withdrawal of Jet Set means William Fox-Pitt has come off the waiting list to earn his place in the line-up.

Other major contenders include Kiwis Jonelle and Tim Price and four-time Badminton winner Mark Todd.

In his second year as cross-country course designer, Eric Winter has created another big and challenging track where the best horses and riders will take the most direct routes but with longer options for the less experienced.

He said: “It’s important that we keep cross-country at the heart of the sport. I want to get everyone round, while allowing the best horses to prosper. I want riders to come back and say ‘That was exciting’.”

Feature fences on the four-mile course include those at the quarry, Huntsman’s Close, the lake, Vicarage Vee and the recently introduced Hildon Water Pond.

Doc Martin star to give boost to equine charity ACTOR Martin Clunes will be among the crowds at Badminton Horse Trials in his role as president of the British Horse Society.

The organisation has been chosen as the event’s nominated charity for the year and the popular actor - best known for his Doc Martin and Men Behaving Badly roles - will help promote its work during his visit, as well as meet many of its members attending the international.

Meanwhile, the Princess Royal - who was a successful competitor at Badminton herself and is the society’s vice-patron - will be in the main arena at the conclusion of the trials on Sunday, May 6, to present the Mitsubishi Motors Trophy to the winning rider.

LIBERAL Democrats on South Gloucestershire Council have elected a new leader to replace long-standing Ruth Davis.

The Yate councillor had held the post for 13 years but she has now handed the baton over to Westerleigh councillor Claire Young, who will lead her party into the local elections in 2019.

Councillor Young paid tribute to her predecessor, describing her as “a terrific champion for local people and community causes”.

She said: “She is a great mentor and friend and I’m honoured to be following in her footsteps.”

Councillor Davis said: “Although I am stepping down as group leader, I am not going anywhere. I hope to be re-elected as councillor for Yate Central in 2019 so I can continue to stand up for local residents.”

From mining to art - former pit among venues for annual art trail WILLOW and chainsaw sculptures will be featured at a new venue in this year’s Severn Vale Art Trail.

Andy O’Neill, well known in South Gloucestershire for turning fallen trees into artworks, seating and play features, is among six exhibitors to have displays at the Oldwood Pits site in Tanhouse Lane, Rangeworthy.

He will be joined by Jenny Humphris, Tanya Bartlett, Audrey Forbes and John Kemp, who all work with willow, as well as painter Tara Stein.

More than 50 other artists have also enlisted for the increasingly popular trail, which runs from May 4-13.

It is part of Thornbury Arts Festival - running after this year’s main festival closes - and allows people to see a variety of art forms at a series of studio and exhibition venues in Thornbury and a number

of other towns and villages.

More than half of the locations are in Thornbury but visitors can also enjoy displays in places from Olveston and Alveston to Charfield, North Nibley and Berkeley.

There will be ten group exhibition venues open while the trail is running, together with many individual artists’ studios.

The variety of artistic skills on show will also include jewellery making and pottery to pen and ink geometric drawings, painting and photography.

Youth drama group impresses with “triumphant” Les Miserables A STANDING ovation brought the curtain down on Les Miserables, the spring production of Northavon Youth Theatre Company.

The schools edition of the hit musical ran for five nights in Thornbury’s Armstrong Hall - an ambitious challenge for the young actors but one which earned high praise from audiences.

Lyn Kidd’s production was described as “a triumph of colour and energy, showcasing some outstanding young talent”.

The stage crew was praised for keeping the action moving, while well-controlled sound and lighting resulted in a high quality production.

An orchestra accompanied the cast, which included Freddie Dixon-Lewis in the role of Jean Valjean, Josh Moore as Javert and Robyn Purchase as Fantine.

Folk festival ready to rock ORGANISERS of the Rockhampton Folk Festival say this year’s event will bring another top quality line-up.

Triathlon with a difference to help fight against meningitis A GROUP of fundraisers in Berkeley are organising a community triathlon in memory of a young boy who died from meningitis.

Friends and family of 2-yearold Sam Virgo, who died in March 2008, are staging the event on Saturday 14 July, in aid of the Stroud-based charity Meningitis Now. Those taking part will either run a half marathon or take on a 100-mile cycle ride, starting and finishing in Berkeley Square. Children from the local primary school will take on the swimming part of the event in the week leading up to race day.

Since Sam’s death people in Berkeley have been raising funds with the Sam Virgo Memorial Walk, covering the 10 miles from Thornbury to Berkeley.

Alongside this an annual

rounders tournament and many other events have seen them raise over £150,000 towards Meningitis Now’s work.

One of the organisers, Claire Spiers, said: “We feel that raising money for Meningitis Now will not only help the charity support many more families but also

raise awareness and ensure that eventually everyone is entitled to the vaccine for Meningitis B. “Our goal is to make people aware of the fantastic work done by our chosen charities, how they can make a difference and to raise much-needed funds for each of them.”

They’ll also be raising funds and awareness for two other charities, the CJD (CreutzfeldtJakob Disease) Support Network and Sue Ryder Leckhampton.

Gritter fleet faces cuts THE fleet of gritters used to treat South Gloucestershire’s roads in the winter is set to be cut to save money.

It is also planned to remove more than 18 miles (30km) of roads within the district from those that are salted as a precaution to reduce the risk of ice forming.

Among roads that will be affected by the change are Sibland Road in Thornbury.

In Chipping Sodbury, Dodington and Westerleigh, it is proposed to no longer have precautionary salting of Claypit Hill, part of Dodington Road, Gibbs Lane and Sodbury Lane.

Winterbourne and Frampton Cotterell will see Park Lane and Perrinpit Road removed from the list.

South Gloucestershire Council currently uses a fleet of 11 gritters to not only spread salt where ice could form but also to melt ice that has already developed and snow that has fallen. The winter highways team also removes snow.

It said it didn’t have the resources to treat all of its 955 miles (1,537km) of highway so prioritised busier roads, bus

routes, links to key towns and villages and routes to hospitals and schools.

Such primary routes amount to about 334 miles (538km) being treated during standard precautionary salting.

A further 42 miles (67km) of secondary routes are only gritted when there is a predicted substantial increase of risk from snow or freezing rain and when resources allowed.

The council’s proposals to make savings of £100,000 include reducing the gritter fleet by two and cutting the amount of time spent by drivers treating roads.

It said although it carried out an exercise to ensure efficiency in treating roads, that only realised half of its savings target, making it necessary to remove some routes.

Public consultation is currently taking place on the moves and anyone who wants to make a comment should do so via the council’s website by June 18.

It is planned to introduce the changes, if agreed, in time for next winter.

The Baths ANYONE keen to go swimming these days need only head to Thornbury’s leisure centre for a dip.

But as long ago as 1839, a trade directory mentioned a public swimming pool in the town - one that could have been opened in 1832 in response to a national cholera outbreak that claimed the lives of at least two people in Thornbury.

Known simply as the Baths, or sometimes the Bathings, the pool belonged to a farmhouse at the end of what is now Bath Road.

It is not known who thought of the idea to dam up a stream in the field running down from Vilner towards Gillingstool in order to create a bathing pool and public washhouse.

But Thornbury was ahead of its time because Parliament passed the Baths and Washhouses Act in 1846 to encourage local authorities to

At the time, the majority of houses did not have a bathroom or even running water but doctors and social reformers recommended people should keep clean to try and prevent the spread of infections.

being excavated and lined. It is understood that for a short time it was even licensed to sell alcohol under the name of The Bathin Place, but only until 1874.

The stone-lined pool was 59ft long, 30ft wide and 3ft deep at one end, increasing to about 6ft deep at the other. There were also two diving boards made from wooden planks.

Changing rooms consisted of cubicles at the pool-side and hardy youngsters would swim from April to September. The entrance fee was between one and two old pennies but some children could get in free in exchange for clearing stones from the fields.

For many years, Thornbury Grammar School pupils were

among those who learned to swim at the pool before switching to the Blue Lagoon at Severn Beach.

It is also believed there were laundry facilities at the baths and during the 1930s and 40s, some people would go there to wash in what were described as stone baths in the cubicles.

The water supply came from a continuous feed from the stream via a filter bed and was always cold, with shrimps and other small water creatures often seen in the murky depths.

Water was tested every year in April when, it is claimed, a council employee would take a sample from the filter bed, hold it up to the light, take a drink and declare: “There is nothing wrong with that.”

It is understood a child developing polio forced the closure of the baths as a precautionary measure and the pool was eventually sold into council hands in 1949.

Plans were subsequently drawn up to improve the quality of the water, which had been found to be “grossly polluted”, but an inability to get a grant led to the baths falling into a state of disrepair.

They closed in about 1956, eventually being demolished to make way for sheltered housing.

Perfect Pork with Prosciutto Serves 6 Ingredients: • L ean Pork fillet – 750g (1½ lb) •B asil - small bunch of fresh basil leaves, washed.

•P armesan, freshly grated – 6 x tbsp.

• Sun-dried tomato paste – 6 x tbsp.

•P rosciutto or Parma ham – 12 thin slices.

• Salt and pepper - to taste.

To serve •B asic Tomato Sauce – homemade or shop-bought(I use Lloyd Grossman if I’m pushed for time) • Few black olives- optional PREHEAT OVEN TO 190° C/375°F/ GAS MARK 5 Here’s what you do: 1. Trim away the excess fat from the pork.

2. Slice the pork lengthways down the middle (do not cut all the way through).

3. Open out the fillet and season inside.

4. Lay the basil leaves down the centre.

5. Mix the cheese, sun-dried tomato paste and mixed herbs and spread on top of the basil leaves.

6. Press the pork back together.

Wrap the ham around the pork, overlapping, until the length of the fillet is covered. Secure with cocktail sticks or string.

7. Place on a rack in a roasting tin, seam side down, and brush

Exciting plans for Thornbury health services I AM delighted that our town is finally seeing some progress on the redevelopment of our local health services. It has been announced that Thornbury will benefit from a new and improved Health and Care Centre.

The new Integrated Primary & Community Care Hub will include greater primary care, GP services, and outpatient services, as well as increased provision for mental health services. Social care beds will be added to help reduce the number of hospital admissions, and the elderly community will also benefit from a specialist ‘frailty hub’, focusing on patients receiving care in their own homes.

As both a local man and the local MP, I am delighted we have been able to secure plans for these facilities, and I am so grateful to the community and fantastic volunteers who have helped every step of the way. With your local support, I have regularly raised this important issue with Ministers and the Department for Health, securing two visits from Jeremy Hunt to Thornbury over the last two years. As your MP I will continue to raise the proposals at the heart of Government to ensure the project is delivered as quickly as possible.

ensure the shared provision of care across South Gloucestershire.

n COMMUNITY NEWS YOUTH groups and schools in the Thornbury area have each been given £500 by the town’s Lions club as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The club wanted to use the occasion to focus on young people and organised two presentation events so it could hand over the donations.

A total of 13 schools in the area received cash in order to buy books and sports equipment.

The second event saw cheques presented to five scout groups in Thornbury, Alveston and Olveston, to Severnvale Guiding for its brownies, rainbows and guides and to local army, sea and air cadets.

Lions president, Shekar Bheenuck, made the presentations and congratulated the groups for inspiring young people to be active.

The club said it was committed to helping the local community and would welcome new members to its meetings, which are held on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at the Chantry in Castle Street.

Campaign group joins opposition to proposed housing estate COUNTRYSIDE campaigners have added their voice to opposition against the latest large-scale housing plan for Thornbury.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has submitted an objection to the plan by Bovis Homes to build up to 370 homes on the north side of the town off Gloucester Road.

If the outline scheme is approved, it will extend housing out of the town towards the A38 across nearly 60 acres of agricultural land from Upper Morton to Crossways Lane at The Knapp.

It will also add even more homes to the many hundreds already built recently or which have been granted planning permission.

A large number of objections to the plan have been posted with South Gloucestershire Council, including from the residents action group TRAPP’D and the CPRE, as well as individual residents of the town.

The CPRE said the Bovis site, alongside the B4061, had not been identified in the local core strategy. Full story page 3.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Tesla Model X, 2017 - current: Gullwing Zeitgeist I PROMISED you last year that I’d test a Tesla, and here it is: the striking, premium-priced Model X SUV. If you have upwards of 80 large to spend, need six or seven seats, four wheel drive and insist on being the centre of attention wherever you go powered purely by electricity, this is the only show in town. I also believe that whatever happens to Tesla the company, the Model X will become a classic of sorts; name a gullwing-doored car that hasn’t.

The problem you’ll have is that there are very few examples of the Model X on the used market, and I suspect that a large part of the

appeal for the early-adopter Tesla owner is having a new Model X on the drive. So does it make any sense at all as a used purchase?

In a word: No. But hang on, because I’m biased – my time with a series of AFVs last year was not a universally happy one and I readily acknowledge that electric cars really are the future.

The Model X is a decent piece of design, seating 6 in comfort (and seven at a squeeze) across three rows. The weight of two tons is disguised very well by the most incredibly powerful electric motor I’ve ever come across – driving it is a memorable experience. This is the sort of acceleration that only motorcyclists and racing drivers will be on nodding terms with – 60mph comes up in 3 seconds flat!

As a passenger it doesn’t work so well, because at full power it feels like you’re on an out-of-control

rollercoaster, which is less than pleasant. And believe me, all Tesla drivers will be very keen to show you their Model X’s party trick, so sick bags at the ready.

It is very easy to be dazzled by the interior design, with its large touchscreen interface and broadly competent voice recognition functions. However that would be to forget that this is still an American interpretation of a luxury car, and that means it is not at all luxury by European standards. It’s not even that well made by anyone’s standards. Bits of trim were already loose on my 9 month old test model, and whilst the materials used are fine to the touch, they are most certainly not what you would expect from a car that brand new can easily retail at £100k+. The last truly premium American car was probably the 1956 Mk II Lincoln Continental, and

unfortunately the Model X is miles away from what Maserati or Range Rover offer at this price point.

To reliability, and this is where the Tesla both impresses and frustrates. This example has not been particularly reliable – the doors have caused problems and there have been a series of minor electrical faults. Tesla send fixes automatically via the internet, much like a computer, and when they work it’s great because you sometimes don’t even notice. But when they don’t, you have to take the car to a Tesla Service Centre. Be thankful that you live near Bristol, because our nearest service centre is in Westbury-on-Trym. If you live in Cornwall or Wales you’re nearest centre is….also Westbury-on-Trym.

Scotland has one centre. One! Not being able to take my car to a local garage, any local garage, is a colossal negative for me.

But none of this matters, because the Model X doesn’t really have a competitor yet – if you want one then quite simply nothing else will do. It is the motoring equivalent of the iPhone – people simply must have it. The brand is still so hugely appealing to the gadget hungry wealthy buyer, and I have a suspicion that in twenty years you’ll dine out on stories of when you bought one of the first Model X gullwing Teslas. For everyone else, we’ll listen, envy your bravery and hope you pick up the tab.

n SPORT THORNBURY Town increased their lead at the top of the table with a slender 1-0 win at Rockleaze Rangers. On a very difficult pitch for both sides a good proportion of the play was in midfield with both sides struggling to create chances.

The home side battled well against the leaders and it was they who created the first half chance with a shot on target from Dan Webb that went straight to keeper Tom Sheppard after 14 minutes.

At the other end Towns first effort on goal came from a Toby Webb free kick but that found home keeper Will Stabb.

Thornbury got the only goal of the game on 29 minutes after the home side failed to clear and gave away a penalty trying to do so. Craig Lancastle stepped up and fired the ball home.

The visitors had several half chances to increase their lead but failed to hit the target. Right on half time Stabb was called into action tipping the ball over the bar. The nearest the visitors came to scoring a second goal

Table toppers Thornbury look to title - and the Western League was a brilliant header from Brandon Benjamin in the 48th minute that beat Stabb but hit the crossbar.

As well as the promotion push, the club are also in the Les James League Cup Final against Frampton United on the 12th May at Stonehouse Town.

There was good news off the pitch too as the club learnt that their bid for planning permission for floodlights and a perimeter fence to the Mundy Playing Fields pitch has been approved.

Representatives from the Toolstation Western League have visited the Mundy Playing Fields and the inspection confirmed that the facilities meet the League’s criteria and the club’s application for promotion will now go through to the Football Association.

Thornbury youngsters maintain momentum

Avonmouth U18 1-3 Thornbury Town U18 Thornbury Town U18 maintained their push for the Bristol Combination league runners up spot with an away win at Avonmouth.

Thornbury travelled to Avonmouth on the back of a great performance against league leaders Port of Bristol the previous week.

Thornbury started the match slowly and it was Avonmouth who had the best of the early exchanges. The visitors duly fell behind after a harmless free kick from 35 yards was pushed onto the bar by Thornbury keeper Sam Blunden and a goalmouth scramble saw the home team take an early lead.

Thornbury were guilty of creating goal scoring opportunities but failing to take them. The closest they came was a fine effort by Louis Ogilvie that hit the post.

The second half saw Thornbury dominate the possession and territory with Avonmouth were working hard to stop the visitors from equalising. Thornbury eventually drew level when they were awarded a free kick 30 yards out.

Charlie Exell’s strike was palmed into the net by the keeper.

Thornbury took a deserved lead when the ball fell to Tom Cornock again 30 yards out who hit a thunderbolt over the stranded keeper.

Thornbury wrapped up the 3 points when they were awarded another free kick around 25 yards out from goal and Tom Cornock lifted the ball over the

wall and into the top left hand corner to grab his second of the match.

Port of Bristol U18 1-1 Thornbury U18 Thornbury Town U18s travelled to play undefeated league leaders Port of Bristol and were delighted to come away with a 1-1 draw despite missed opportunities that cost them all three points.

Thornbury’s lone striker Jacob Harper was causing the home defence problems by his quick pace and strength. Harper had Thornbury’s best chance of the first half when he beat the Port of Bristol centre back to the ball only to see his effort bounce back off the post. Port of Bristol had few first half chances the

best falling to their striker inside the penalty box but he failed to hit the target.

Thornbury deservingly took the lead in the second half through another corner kick when the ball fell to captain Sam Downes inside the 6 yard box and he prodded the ball home for his first goal of the season.

The home team were struggling to get a foothold in the game and didn’t look like the 10game undefeated league leaders.

Port of Bristol drew level when the ball was played through to their striker, with the linesman flagging for offside against two Port of Bristol players.

The Thornbury defence stopped but the referee allowed play to continue and the home team equalised. The visitors

complained to the referee who then consulted the linesman who said the player was in an offside position but the referee disagreed and allowed the goal to stand.

Thornbury believed they’d regained the lead from another corner when the ball fell to Adam Barrow who slotted the ball across the line. The keeper appeared to scoop the ball out of the goal after the ball had crossed the line, but the referee caused controversy by not awarding the goal.

The home team nearly snatched all 3 points in the final seconds after a shot was well saved by Sam Blunden in the Thornbury goal.

n SPORT WITH warmer weather arriving, it’s proving to be a busy time at Thornbury Tennis Club. Three early season tournaments have already been completed, with other tournaments planned and a summer league about to get underway.

The President’s Plate saw ten mixed doubles pairs in the tournament, divided into 2 leagues with 5 pairs in each league. Each pair played a set against the other 4 pairs in their league. Points were awarded on a league basis with winners of the two groups playing each other in the final and the second place in each group having a playoff for third place in the tournament.

The weather was very changeable, with bright sunshine for most of the tournament but a very heavy shower interrupted play for 45 minutes.

In the first group, Claire Hawkins and Tony Light won all their sets despite Tony arriving late for the tournament and starting the first set without a warm-up. Mair Vaughan and Matt Stringer played well to finish second in their league.

In the second group Jo Hargreaves and Felix Boyes produced a dominant performance, only conceding 4 games in their 4 sets. Rose Higgins and Nick Mason had won their sets comfortably until they bumped into Jo and Felix.

The final between Claire Hawkins/Tony Light and Jo Hargreaves/Felix Boyes was played on the main show court.

Tennis club set for Summer

Players ready to play for the the President’s Plate. and won the final 6-3, 6-3. Jo & Felix’s experience in playing as a pair and particularly Felix’s youthful agility proving to be the decisive factors.

The play off for third place was a close encounter between Rose/Nick and Mair/Matt.

Rose and Nick secured the first, closely contested set 6-4. This continued to be a close match into the second set, reaching 6-6 and triggering a tie break. Mair & Matt started the tie break well and were leading 4-2 before Rose & Nick recovered and clinched the tie break 7-5.

American Tournaments The first two warm up competitions of the new tennis season were American tournaments. These are mixed doubles events where players change partners for each round of the competition. The tournament winners were Nick Mason & Carole Boulton and Mark Collins & Linda Mantle

respectively.

Beth Mann is running an American mixed doubles tournament on Saturday 19 May starting at 2pm as part of her fundraising for East African Playgrounds. Through the charity, she will be spending the summer holidays working with disadvantaged children in Uganda and contributing to the conservation of the habitat of the Silverback Gorillas.

The tournament is open to non-members and players of all abilities invited to take part.

The entry fee is £8.00 and all profits will go to the East African Playgrounds Charity. Spectators are welcome.

Warm weather heralds action for Thornbury Running Club

SPRINGTIME is bringing the first action for triathletes slowly emerging from winter training in the pool and long bike rides.

Selina Slater got her multisport season underway by travelling to Somerset for the Taunton Deane Aquathlon, which started with a pool swim of 500m, followed with a 5k run.

Selina opened with a competitive 9:46 mins swim and ran the 5k in 29:06 mins to finish 34th overall and 15th woman in a time of 38:53 mins.

Angela Bushell competed in the 38th edition of the Frenchay 10k. The course starts and finishes on the UWE Glenside campus and has some tough climbs near the finish. Angela

maintained a steady pace throughout the race and finished in 247th place in 52:55 mins.

On Saturday there were Thornbury runners spread over 4 different parkruns. Hugh McPherson was at Kingsway parkrun in Gloucester for the first time and ran 24:22 mins.

Paul Thomas finished in a very creditable 5th place at Wotton parkrun in a time of 22:10 mins.

Kevin Arnold ran the fastest time of all, eclipsing Paul’s time by 1 second at Shrewsbury parkrun in 22:09 mins.

Laura Orna was 3rd woman in a great time of 22:13 mins at Chipping Sodbury, followed by Kevin Wood 22:40 mins, Richard Illingworth 29:20 mins and

Thornbees win - with a player getting a ring Thornbees 69-0 Hardwicke and Quedgeley Harlequins The Thornbees enjoyed another comfortable win in their last game of the season. The freescoring Bobbie Jackson scored four more tries, but it was another team member who had a day she’ll never forget.

The fixture had been hastily arranged to help the Harlequins Ladies rack up sufficient fixtures to ensure admission to the Women’s RFU Leagues for next season.

The Thornbees were a bit short on players but Clevedon Ladies answered a call for help and sent six of their players for the match.

The Thornbees went ahead in the second minute when Charlotte Williams raced over as the Bees attacked from a

scrum on the Harlequins’ 22. She converted her try but narrowly missed adding the extras to a try from Gemma Tyrrell, who had supported an attack at pace.

A few minutes later Gemma scored again and after ten minutes the Thornbees were 17-0 ahead.

The Ladies were playing at pace and the outstanding skipper Sadie Giles was the next to score, closely followed by one from Laura Panting. The conversion put the Bees 29-0 up.

The sixth try came close to half time when after Sadie Giles and Laura Panting had made good ground, Bobbie Jackson came in on a great line to score close to the posts. Charlotte added the extras, but the Thornbees still had time to score again before half time and the Jackson-Williams duo scored a

try and conversion to make the score 43-0 at the break.

Sadie Giles ran in for another try within the first minute of the second half. Charlotte’s conversion brought up the half century.

Bobbie Jackson took a quick penalty to complete her hat-trick then a few minutes later Sadie took another quick penalty and Bobbie shrugged off a high tackle to run in for another. The conversion made it 62-0.

With the hour-mark approaching Bobbie Jackson raced clear from halfway. She was pursued all the way by the Thornbees replacement prop Cath Fishlock. Then as Bobbie ran around to ground the ball between the posts she spotted Cath bearing down on her, presented her with the ball and Cath scored the try.

Her reward was a proposal of marriage from head coach Ian Maunder, who did the decent thing by waiting until after the match to get down on one knee.

The players were aware that if Cath scored a try Ian would do the deed and made sure it would happen.

Charlotte Williams’ conversion went largely unnoticed amongst the celebrations of the players but Thorns had cranked the score up to 69-0.

Thornbees can look back on 2017-18 with some satisfaction.

Thirteen matches, nine wins, 61 tries and an engagement.

BIDEFORD were confirmed as a relegated side the previous weekend and their players were determined to show they were better than their position in the bottom three suggested.

The Devon side had beaten Thornbury at Bideford on the first Saturday of the season.

The pitch was firm for possibly the first time in six months despite a heavy downpour a couple of hours before kick-off.

After a pointless first quarter Thorns got the scoreboard moving on 23 minutes when Sam Evans touched down from a driving lineout. Jake Wood’s conversion went wide.
