Vision for new Armstrong Hall takes step forward IT’S five years since ambitious plans by a group of Thornbury volunteers to turn the Armstrong Hall into a 500-seat theatre complex were axed after a long running attempt to achieve their dream. Now, public support for a new hall on the Chapel Street site is hoped to finally see a rebuilding of the premises to ensure it remains the town’s main performance venue. The campaign group ACT - Arts and Community in Thornbury - worked on their project for many years but eventually shelved it in 2013 on the grounds of viability. But a desperate need to upgrade the hall resulted more recently in options being put forward to decide on the future of the facilities it provided. With public support for the hall to be rebuilt, rather than just refurbished or even re-located to the Turnberries community building, town mayor Helen Harrison said a new building would create a “wonderful
legacy” for Thornbury. But further work is required on governing and financing the £4.9 million project, as well
as the design of the hall and facilities before a final decision on the scheme can be made. Full story page 3
