Gromit’s grand boost to town’s economy THE visit of Gromit to Thornbury has provided a big boost to local businesses.

Fans coming to see the town’s Gromit statue have boosted footfall in the centre of the town by almost a third.

Thornbury Chamber of Commerce estimates footfall was up by around 30 per cent when Gromit was resident at St Mary’s Centre, with traders also reporting a festival atmosphere as people came to take pictures with ‘Honeysuckle Rose’.

A steady stream of visitors came to St Mary’s Centre before the statue was removed in September, but local people got involved as well, with scores taking part in Thornbury’s own mini Gromit trail.

Rowena Moncrieffe, Chair of Thornbury Chamber of Commerce, which helped organise Gromit’s arrival in the town said: “We hope this will encourage people to visit Thornbury again.”

n NEWS SOUTH Gloucestershire Council says designers are now working on plans for drainage works which are due to take place in Thornbury in early 2019.

Oldbury Lane will have to be closed, more information will be given to residents nearer the time.

Nine sites have been identified to receive a share of £3.4 million from the Challenge Fund, they are all places which have been affected by flooding.

Work is currently underway at five of them; Abson Road in Wick, Bitton, Winterbourne,

THE Armstrong Hall redevelopment group is ready to help recruit a person or organisation to develop a fundraising strategy and business plan.

In March, the Armstrong Hall Trust decided to re-build the venue on the existing site. It appealed for anyone with expertise who could help progress the project to come forward and join a working group. Cllr Clive Parkinson, Chair of the Armstrong Hall redevelopment group said: “We had a great response to our appeal for expertise and have some strong skills sets within the working group to help advise us on the way forward.”

This group has had presentations from the architects and consultants who worked on the project plans as part of the decision making process.

It’s now ready to support the Trust in recruiting a person or organisation which can help the initiative move forward.

Armstrong Hall redevelopment team ready for next steps The fundraising which has already taken place, and is ongoing, is expected to be an integral part of any grant applications made under a fundraising strategy. Cllr Shirley Holloway, Mayor of Thornbury and Chair of the Hall Trust said: “The Community is a key part to moving this project forward. There has already been a significant amount of funds raised from various groups and partners in the Community to go towards the funds required which is great evidence for potential funders that this truly is a Community project.”

n NEWS FANS visiting Thornbury’s Gromit statue has meant a boost for the town’s businesses.

Thornbury Chamber of Commerce estimates footfall was up by around 30 per cent when Gromit was in town. It’s now waiting for official figures to come from the ‘Gromit Unleashed 2’ organisers.

Retailers told the chamber there was a good ‘vibe’ in general around the event. The manager of the St Mary Centre, Alan Cole, says there was always someone next to Gromit taking a photo.

‘Honeysuckle Rose’ as the Gromit was named, will now be auctioned off to raise further funds for Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Rowena Moncrieffe, Chair of Thornbury Chamber said: “It was nice to see so many people around the Town throughout the summer obviously enjoying both the main Gromit Trail but also taking part in our very own Gromit Hunt. We hope this will encourage people to visit Thornbury again.”

The town’s own Gromit hunt which featured mini models of the famous hound, found a winner in Joby Amesbury, aged 10. He chose as his prize the mini Gromit which was “007 Diamonds are Forever” designed

by Penny Skinner from Bonds of Thornbury. He also won £25 of Thornbury Vouchers to spend in local shops.

The remaining mini Gromits will be sold for the Grand Appeal charity. They were designed and decorated by local people, and participators in the trail voted

Best place to live SOUTH Gloucestershire has been rated the best place to live in England.

Property consultants CACI and industry magazine Property Week put the area third in the UK - behind Edinburgh and Aberdeen - and just ahead of Devizes, Harrogate and Bath in their national “hot housing index”.

Locations were ranked according to affordability, employment levels, internet connectivity, school provision, public transport access, crime, local amenities and people’s propensity to move from an area.

And while South Gloucestershire rated low on affordability and crime, it was given top ratings in three of the other six areas.

Bath was sixth, while Bristol was not in the top 50 places to

live, because it was found to be an even less affordable place to buy a home.

The affordability score is calculated by comparing average house price and average income in an area, and this is then combined with the other “quality of life” data.

CACI said South Gloucestershire’s higher rating than Bristol showed living here was a “viable alternative to citycentre living”.

Director John Platt said: “Much has been said in the press over recent months about declining house prices. This, coupled with a slight increase in average wages, should see the gulf between income and house price come down, but a large proportion of districts in our ranking still score low on overall affordability.”

Thornbury day trippers asked for memories of the sea

THE Sailors’ Society, a 200 year old maritime charity, is asking people in Thornbury to recall and share their memories and experiences of the sea. It’s part of a project to highlight our connections with the sea which is being held to mark the organisation’s 200th anniversary.

Stuart Rivers, the Sailors’ Society’s CEO said: “Whether it’s beach balls, flip-flops or the ingredients used to make an ice cream, 90 per cent of everything you see beside the seaside is transported by sea.”

“During the heatwave, many people from Thornbury will have headed to the beach to create long-lasting memories. Whether you spent childhood holidays at the beach or have made a career out of working at sea, we’d love to hear and share your stories.”

‘Enormous’ bass flute to feature at concert A BASS flute features in the latest charity concert by Nicola Woodward and friends, which the musician describes as ‘really enormous’, and encourages people to come and see it.

The evening on October 12th will feature ‘Seven Pieces for Severn Ages’ played by candlelight. One of them is ‘A Lovely Story’ by Anze Rozman, for three flutes, alto flute and the bass flute.

Society aims to share fascination with Thornbury’s past THORNBURY Local History and Archaeology Society kicks off its autumn season with a film telling the story of Bristol’s role in the Great War and a talk on the community of Little Stoke.

The Society meets every month for talks from expert speakers on a range of historical

and archaeological topics. Some speakers are lecturers at UWE and Bristol University, others have spent a lifetime researching an area of special interest. Film nights also take place regularly.

‘Why Little Stoke, A Forgotten History’ is on the 10th October with Martin Davis. It’s the story

of the community that lived in what was once a hamlet and is now a modern housing estate.

Bristol’s Great War is showing on 13th November, featuring the role Bristol played role in WW1, to mark 100 years since the Armistice.

During future months there are talks about Thornbury Castle, and an update from the medieval

Newport Ship museum, amongst other topics.

Talks take place at St Mary’s Hall in Eastbury Road starting at 7.30pm, on the second Tuesday of the month from October through to May. Cost is £2.50 with refreshments. Membership is £14 a year. For more information follow the society on Facebook or via MyThornbury.

Mayor cuts the ribbon Police appeal for at new radio studio witnesses after motorway collision near Thornbury POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a collision on the M5 northbound carriageway between junction 17 at Cribbs Causeway, and J16, for Thornbury and Filton.

It happened on Friday 14 September when a vehicle hit a blue Skoda Fabia which spun into a lorry and then into the central reservation.

A female passenger was injured and has a suspected broken wrist.

Despite the incident taking place during the Friday rush hour no witnesses have come forward.

n NEWS THORNBURY Picture House is screening the English National Ballet’s Giselle at The Cossham Hall on 2 November, following the very successful showing of Matthew Bourne’s ballets Carmen and Sleeping Beauty.

Giselle is known as a traditional romantic ballet, but in this version, it has been recreated by the celebrated choreographer Akram Khan, with staging and costumes by Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Call for businesses to help people with disabilities BUSINESSES in Thornbury are being encouraged to join a scheme called ‘Can’t Wait’, whereby they make their toilets available to people with disabilities free of charge.

The initiative is run by the South Gloucestershire Disability Equality Network (SGDEN). People are given a small card to show to businesses, which asks if they can use their staff toilets, or their customer toilets without having to buy anything. Participating firms are asked to put a postcard in their window to show their support.

Exhibition celebrating South Gloucestershire women comes to Thornbury AN exhibition which celebrates the achievements of local women since WW1 is to come to Thornbury in November after its launch in Kingswood.

‘Inspiring Women: the legacy of the First World War in South Gloucestershire’, features women who have made a positive impact on society over the last 100 years. It examines the role they have played in areas such as industry, culture, local politics, public service, social justice and sport.

The exhibition aims to show how women’s lives changed forever in 1918. Not only did the war end, but the Representation of the People Act was introduced.

It allowed some women over the age of 30 the right to vote.

However, it wasn’t until 1928 and the introduction of the Equal Franchise Act that women over 21 finally had the same voting

Appeal over plans for another 370 homes is postponed THE appeal by Bovis Homes over its application to build up to 370 houses on land South of Gloucester Road in Thornbury has been postponed until early 2019. It was due to start on 11th September.

As the Thornbury Voice goes to press, it’s been announced that a pre-inquiry meeting is to take place at Turnberries on Tuesday 25th September. This meeting is mainly procedural, to set the timings and scope of the Inquiry.

The outline application was for building on nearly 60 acres (24 hectares) of agricultural land, from Upper Morton to Crossways Lane at The Knapp.

The appeal was submitted against South Gloucestershire Council’s non-determination of the application within an agreed period. The inquiry is expected to last up to ten days.

Council takes legal action over 121 new homes in Charfield SOUTH Gloucestershire Council is challenging a Planning Inspectorate’s decision to allow homes to be built in Charfield north of Wotton Road.

The planning application by Barratt Homes was subject to an inquiry, and permission was given on appeal for 121 homes, a retail unit and open space.

Leader of the Council Cllr Toby Savage said: “As a Council Administration, we are determined to take robust action to challenging unsustainable development across the district.”

“We reiterate that where we have taken difficult decisions to proactively and positively plan for future housing and jobs growth, we should not have decisions from the Planning Inspectorate which undermines this work as it only stores up economic, social and environmental problems for the future.”

Progress on getting Thornbury charity residents voices heard hosts Christmas meal over health facilities

LIBERAL Democrat councillors have secured a meeting with health bosses over setting up local groups to represent residents’ views on future health and care facilities in Thornbury.

Thornbury hospital is closing and plans are underway to move current services to other locations and establish new services in the town. A meeting has been set up with the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commiiosning Group, which will make decisions on the plans.

Thornbury Lib Dem Councillor, Maggie Tyrell, said: “We’re determined that local voices are heard and people from the community are involved in the planning of any new health and care facilities in Thornbury.”

At the end of last year, local Liberal Democrats asked the Health Authorities to create stakeholder groups for the projects to create new health and care facilities in Thornbury.

They were supported by South Gloucestershire Council.

Cllr Maggie Tyrell said: “So far this hasn’t happened, despite health managers agreeing to the idea, so I reminded the CCG’s Area Director David Jarret of this commitment, and stressed how important it is for people to have their say on these plans before they are set in stone.”

RESIDENTS in Bibstone have been assured that South Gloucestershire Council will fight for all the village to get access to fast broadband.

Villagers have met Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources, Cllr Rob Creer, Liberal Democrat councillors, and members of the council’s digital team find out how they can access superfast broadband in future. Some homes in specific postcodes in the village have been left out of all three phases of an Openreach improvement programme which was funded by the local authority.

“The CCG remain committed to progressing plans for new facilities on the Thornbury and Frenchay site as soon as possible and we continue to work closely with our partners in North Bristol NHS Trust and in Local Authority towards this.”

Violinist to play in fundraising concert THE violinist Roger Huckle and members of the Bristol Ensemble are to return to Thornbury for a concert which will raise funds for the Armstrong Hall Redevelopment Project.

The Bristol Ensemble, which is Bristol’s professional chamber orchestra, brings together the best of the region’s performers under the leadership of Roger Huckle. This concert will feature pieces by Mendelsson, Holst, Grieg and Elgar.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in D minor, composed when he was just 13, has been popular with audiences since its rediscovery in the middle of the 20th century by Yehudi Menuhin. Gustav Holst's St Paul's Suite, named after the London school where he was the music director, is an opportunity to spot the well-known folk tunes woven together within the piece. Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite is a collection of baroquestyle dances, written in 1912 but inspired by a famous 17th

century Norwegian playwright.

Elgar's Serenade for Strings in three enchanting movements is the most frequently performed of all his works.

n COMMUNITY NEWS FOR many of us it was a rite of passage, being a Cub, Scout or Venture scout. Nowadays, some of the names have changed, but the ethos of the scouting movement stays the same.

It also remains popular, with the Cotswold Edge Scout District overseeing dozens of thriving groups in South Gloucestershire.

The District has been a victim of its own success, with more than 150 children waiting to get involved. The problem is a lack of volunteers. Dean Ashpole is already involved and explains more about the area’s scouting movement.

For over 100 years Scouting has been teaching youngsters confidence-building and showing them new skills for life, as well as enjoying the great outdoors.

But due to a rise in popularity within Scouting over the past years we require more volunteer leaders.

Cotswold Edge has 20 Scout Groups and 8 Explorer Scout Units covering most of the South Gloucestershire area.

We have more young people wanting to get involved but we do not have the available adult volunteers to help support this.

As a result we have over 150 young people on our waiting lists.

If more adults and young people became volunteers more young people could join.

We currently have over 40 vacancies for uniformed leaders and over 30 vacancies for group support.

What type of role could I do?

We have a wide range of volunteer roles - from casual helpers to leaders, trainers, trustees and more – we have a role for everyone. We also offer flexible volunteering roles too, so we can fit around you

Do I have the right skills?

You don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved with Scouting. Do you have first aid knowledge? Are you good with numbers? Handy in the kitchen?

Or are you a DIY whizz? We all have useful skills and you can volunteer and help in many ways.

What if I don’t have that much spare time?

Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you.

Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we'll make sure you're properly trained and supported.

What will I get out of volunteering?

As well as gaining externally recognised skills and having a brilliant time, Scouting also offers the chance to build on personal skills, like teamwork, confidence and leadership. A study found that over 90% of our volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.

My child is in Scouting – is there anything I could do to help?

The short answer is yes. Many of our helpers and leaders are parents of our youth members because

they’ve seen first-hand how Scouting benefits young people and want to give something back.

It’s also a chance to spend more time with your children and learn new skills. Speak to your child’s leader to discuss how you might become involved.

Are there any age restrictions on helping out?

As long as you're over 18, you can help out as an adult volunteer in Scouting. There is no upper age limit for adult volunteers. If you are aged between 14 to 18, there is the option of becoming a Young Leader.

HE BED Workshop, established in 1984 in Bedminster, has moved from its home in the old pickle factory in Braunton Road.

Access issues at the Bedminster site led the company to relocate earlier this year.

Their new home is the formerly derelict Grade II-listed Old Bus Depot in Avonmouth. The old ticket office entrance now provides the first showroom and leads to ground floor workshops and three first floor showrooms.

The Bed Workshop have produced a varying range of contemporary beds in sustainably sourced pine and oak for more than 30 years. Beds are easily modified or designed by customers and can be stained, painted, distressed, lacquered, oiled or waxed. Styles are essentially simple and timeless.

With a large range of mattresses up to super king-size in stock, beds can be made, delivered and assembled in 1-2 weeks.

With two staff based in Brittany, the Bed Workshop also offers a fantastic range of functional antique French furniture. Prices are often comparable with new high street offerings. Large beds are a speciality, with many dozens of king-size, super king-size and larger models.

Currently the earliest on sale is an incredible 17th C Catalan marriage bed from Givenchy’s chateau – but most date from the late 19th C. Fin de siecle Paris produced many incredible unique beds, often specifically ordered by sumptuous Maison Clos (don’t ask!) Suitable for homes from crofts through to chateaux, beds can be in natural wood, painted, gilded or upholstered in a style to suit every taste.

Farmhouse tables have always been sought-after, with zinc-topped and industrial and dressmakers models gaining popularity. Regional armoires are the flagships of French furniture, from tiny maids wardrobes to highly-carved or painted and gilded masterpieces. Thornbury residents still have time to comment on plans for 150 new homes COMMENTS from residents about an application by Bloor Homes to build houses at Crossways will still be considered, even though the consultation deadline has passed.

But South Gloucestershire Council is asking people to submit them as quickly as possible. Thornbury Town Council and the campaign group Trapp’d (Thornbury Residents Against Poorly Planned Development) have already objected.

Over 100 local residents

attempted to take on the developer, Bloor Homes, by signing a letter which was sent to the company. It was instigated

by Thornbury’s Liberal Democrat councillors Maggie Tyrrell and Jayne Stansfield who received leaflets advertising the plans.

Maggie Tyrrell said: “We’ve been fighting against unsustainable development in Thornbury and across South Glos for some time, but to get this leaflet bringing the fight so close to home was a shock.

Nobody denies the housing crisis in this country, especially for

the young, but the levels of 4 and 5 bedroom executive homes currently swamping Thornbury isn’t a solution to that problem.”

“Bloor Homes told Thornbury Voice in a statement: “We agree with Cllr Tyrell that there is a housing crisis in this country, and if we are to meet the government housebuilding target of 300,000 homes a year then suitable sites within sustainable locations like Thornbury need to come forward to help address the crisis.”

It continued: “Bloor Homes is not proposing a housing estate

Council teams up with uni to buy science park SOUTH Gloucestershire council has teamed up with a nearby university to buy the Bristol & Bath Science Park for £18 million.

The 36-acre park, on Dirac Crescent, Emersons Green, includes the National Composites Centre and Forum exhibition and conference facility and has been open since 2011 but still has large areas yet to be developed.

South Gloucestershire has bought the site jointly with Bath University, which has already been awarded £38.9m towards the £60m cost of building a new hi-tech development, the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems, at the park. The IAAPS is expected to eventually create 1,900 new jobs.

A council spokesperson said that, of the authority’s £14.2m share of the cost, almost £5.8m was coming from the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership’s Economic Development Fund. The £8.4m balance, he said, would come from “prudential borrowing” with the repayments expected to be met from income generated by the park.

The park was previously owned by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Since it was first proposed in 1986, some £300m

is believed to have been spent on the park.

The new owners say they will use their complementary strengths, expertise and networks to “fully realise the park’s potential as a centre of excellence for research and development across the region”.

Among their aims are to maximise the potential of the National Composites Centre, create a new centre called GO2 and support more small and medium enterprises at the Forum.

Health staff urged to get flu jab FRONT-line healthcare workers in Thornbury are being urged to have a flu jab, with officials saying staff refusing the vaccine could be banned from treating patients.

Last winter more than a quarter of front-line NHS workers at the North Bristol Trust were not vaccinated during what was the worst flu season in a decade.

Public Health England figures reveal that 1,252 frontline healthcare workers at the North Bristol Trust did not get the flu vaccine between September 2017 and February 2018.

Of the 4,577 doctors, nurses, clinical staff and support workers at the trust with direct patient contact, 3,325 did get the vaccine - an uptake rate of 73%. That's above the England average of 69%, but still below targets.

The NHS said making vaccination "near universal" is to protect patients in higherrisk clinical environments, like neonatal intensive care and cancer wards, and limit their exposure to unvaccinated staff.

Up to 50% of people with the flu may not even know they have it - but for patients with weakened immune systems or respiratory problems, the flu can be lifethreatening.

Local author in running for literary prize WHEN author Ali Bacon heard her latest book had been longlisted for The People’s Book Prize, she was absolutely delighted but a bit puzzled that In the Blink of an Eye, published earlier this year by Linen Press had been listed as non-fiction.

Ali said: “I can see why there might be some confusion, because the book is based on a true story and most of the people in it are real historical

figures. But I most definitely made the rest of it up.”

Despite her surprise, Ali is still thrilled to be in the competition that was developed as an alternative to existing prizes where winners are decided by a small committee of experts.

Ali said: ‘In The People’s Book Prize,’prizes are decided by readers and any member of the public can vote online.

Ali’s book, set in Victorian

Edinburgh, recreates the life of a Victorian artist and photographer and has been described as elegant, fascinating and profoundly moving.

Thornbury’s health services up for discussion at Over 50’s Forum THE future of local health service provision will feature at the next meeting of the Over 50’s Forum. The group will have a speaker from the local Clinical Commissioning Group who will talk about the Thornbury Clinic, the community hospital, and the infrastructure that will be needed if further housing is built.

There will also be a guest from NHS England Dental Services to respond to members’ concerns about the fact that there is only one NHS dentist in the town.

Tim who? We profile the Metro Mayor for the west of England, who cut his political teeth in South Gloucestershire WHAT is the point of the Metro Mayor? Tim Bowles may have been the Chair of Winterbourne Parish Council and a South Gloucestershire councillor, but now he leads the new pan regional West of England Combined Authority, or Weca.

Mr Bowles accepts that Weca’s name, and his own, may not be on the tip of everyone’s tongue. But with some big announcements expected this autumn from Weca on transport and housing across the West of England, there are many reasons for all of us to pay more attention to this new authority.

Four new Metrobus routes, tens of thousands of new homes, building in the green belt, and new rail and rapid transit routes including to Bristol airport, are among the projects for which Mr Bowles expects to win hundreds of millions in public and private investment by 2036.

“I think the important thing here is to understand how different everybody’s roles are,” he says, in his rather austere office in Bristol’s Temple Quay. He’s not here to do the work done by the three councils that Weca covers – South Gloucestershire,Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset. That means he won’t get involved in the three existing (or almost existing) Metrobus routes, which were planned by the three councils before Weca came along.

Nor will he influence planning applications or dictate exactly how major projects should work. Instead, Weca brings all three council leaders together to make plans for the big issues that affect the region; housing, transport and skills training.

Mr Bowles seeks consensus and then goes to Whitehall seeking government approval and funding. He hints that, finally, we may be about to see the fruits of discussions that started since he took office (when incidentally, Weca was a tiny body, with just seven staff. Compared to most public authorities, it’s still small, with just 40 staff which will

We can expect public consultation this winter on both the transport and the housing and infrastructure plans. Weca’s Joint Transport Strategy calls for four new Metrobus routes by 2036. One possibility is an orbital route around the city.

Mr Bowles will not be drawn on the specifics. “But it’s really important for your readers to know that we are working together on this,” he says.

Weca, he insists, has already drawn the promise of hundreds of millions in funding from Whitehall for plans which the three councils couldn’t have secured individually. “But we aim to find other ways of ribbing more investment,” he says. Mr Bowles is also talking to potential private investors – including, intriguingly, a Japanese rail company he has met the very morning of our interview.

Again, he won’t reveal the project under discussion. But the East Japan Railway Company (EJRC) is one of the biggest rail firms in Japan, operating several of the famous high-speed bullet lines, or Shinkansen, which travel at up to 200mph.

We’re unlikely to get one of those – but EJRC also operates the futuristic Tokyo Monorail, to Tokyo’s Haneda airport.

better route to Bristol Airport, of course, and Weca’s Joint Transport Study says rail is the preferred option.

EJRC has form in the UK, too: it has a 15 per cent stake in West Midlands Trains. “The route to the airport is vital, and the people I was talking to are interested in that,” says Mr Bowles, adding that his visitors were impressed with the speedy rail link from London.

“It can help us bring more visitors in to our World Heritage city of Bath, as well as those coming here to work in the aerospace industry on the Northern Fringe, as well as making it easier for South Bristol folk to get to the new jobs that will be created as the airport expands.” Weca is in talks with the airport and with North Somerset council, which didn’t want to be part of Weca but does cooperate with it.

Will the Japanese investors be interested in Marvin Rees’s idea of an underground network that could form part of a rail link to the airport? “That’s not clear, but Marvin and I work very closely,” on this and other projects, he says.

One of the metro mayor’s messages to investors is that they will be investing in success, not subsidising a region that needs a handout. “We are the only city region that pays money back to

the Treasury,” he says. “Other regions cannot show that level of return. We are not looking for handouts, and we must keep driving that message.”

So will Mr Bowles and his new authority soon gain widespread recognition from the public? His critics say he’s failed to make a mark in his first year and a half. A former South Gloucestershire councillor and ex-chair of Winterbourne parish council, he hasn’t sought the limelight so far in his career. On the other hand, he hasn’t put a foot wrong: refusing to be drawn into the Metrobus controversy, which involved plans drawn up years before he took office, may be seen as a wise move.

His low visibility is partly a measure of his limited powers, and the fact that so far, Weca has had little direct contact with the public. That’s about to change with the consultation expected to start soon.

November and December will see the public consulted on the Joint Spatial Plan, the regional plan for creating 10,000 homes, 82,000 jobs and infrastructure that involves (among other things) using a “modest” 0.65 per cent of the Green Belt around Bristol and Bath.

In the New Year there will be a separate consultation on the Joint Transport Strategy, which will also have a big impact on the region.

The advantage of having a mayor leading a local authority is that they can be an attentiongrabbing figurehead who can stir debate and get things done.

The downside, as Marvin Rees is finding with the Bristol arena, is that the attention can become uncomfortably hot when a major plan draws major dissent.

Tim Bowles is about to become the figurehead for the biggest changes to the West region’s landscape and travel facilities for decades. It will take a shrewd operator to steer these changes – many of which are undoubtedly needed – without taking the flak for the less popular plans. Life is about to get very interesting for the metro mayor.

n STROUD AUCTIONS ALTHOUGH watches set a high bar at Stroud Auction Rooms' September sale, coins were the highlight, with jewellery and a couple of chess sets also making a very good showing in a three day auction of around 2500 lots.

Highest selling lot overall was a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner with stainless steel case, automatic movement and a brown leather strap, which went under the hammer for £5,200. Close on its heels was an International Watch Company British military issue stainless steel gentleman's wristwatch with Ministry arrow and T in circle, which sold for £3,800. Other watches snapped up by bidders included an Oyster Perpetual ladies wristwatch (£1,900) and a Breitling Galactic 30 ladies wristwatch (£1,750).

Third place on the highest selling list was taken by an 18th Century French bone figural chess set, which made £2,950, while a German figural bone chess set of similar age, bearing a Christie's label, was scooped up for £2,900. A 19th Century Calvert wooden chess set in boxwood and rosewood sold for £1,800. Auction staff believe that many collectors, now unable to buy ivory, have turned their sights to bone chess pieces.

But the shining lights were in the specialist coin section with an NCB slabbed gold 2015 sovereign set in deluxe wooden box, selling for £2,600; a Royal Mint gold proof six-coin Britannia set 2015 (£1,700); USA 2016 American Eagle proof gold four-coin set with certificate in presentation case (1,500); and a Jubilee Mint Queen Elizabeth II gold sovereign portrait collection (£1,300). Coin expert Mike Gardner said that coins ranged from Roman and old hammered examples to modern proof sets with good quality modern proof and Piedfort sets selling phenomenally well.

An 18ct gold necklace of knot and sphere links made £2,500, and a rare c1900 bracelet with 25 spherical charms £1,800. There was also considerable interest in a 10ct gold brooch with an enamelled painting of Queen Victoria, originally given to courtiers as leaving gifts.

Protecting our environment

Luke Hall MP writes for Thornbury Voice

AS the MP for our own rural community, and having lived in South Gloucestershire all my life, protecting our environment and wildlife has always been a matter close to my heart. I’ve therefore been delighted that, in recent months, the Government have made this an absolute priority.

In January, the Prime Minister unveiled the UK’s first 25-year Environment Plan to establish what can be done now, to substantially improve our environment. The most notable change has been the introduction of the 5p charge for single-use plastic bags, and evidence indicates that this has seen an 86% fall in the numbers being used. Plans are also being considered to reduce sales of plastic straws and coffee cups.

Furthermore, the Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, has publicly announced plans to introduce a Plastic Bottle Deposit

Return scheme, and in June, the Government’s world-leading ban on the use of ‘mircrobeads’ - the tiny pieces of plastic added to products such as face scrubs, soaps, toothpaste and shower gels - came into force. These tiny toxic pieces of plastic pass in to our seas through our plug holes every day, yet are deadly to marine life across the world.

But the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs’ scope is not limited to the welfare of sea creatures. Plans are in place to introduce an Animal Welfare Bill in Parliament, which will extend the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty, from six-months to five-years.

Additionally, new legislation is being introduced to make CCTV cameras in all abattoirs across the UK mandatory, and a ban on the export of live animals for slaughter will be brought in once we have

left the European Union.

One of the animal welfare issues which I have taken the most active involvement in, is with efforts to ban the domestic trade of illegal ivory. Under new proposals the UK will enforce some of the strictest regulations anywhere in the world. Closer to home, Michael Gove has declared his support for further restrictions on the use of certain pesticides, which are hugely damaging to the populations of bees in Britain.

Efforts to protect our environment, and the animals living within it, are at the forefront of domestic Government thinking, across a huge range of policy areas.

For too long environmental policy has failed to receive the attention it desperately deserves, and I look forward to following future developments.

Deputy head teacher, Mel Willcox, is part of the Olympus Academy Trust compromising of nine South Gloucestershire schools within Winterbourne, Patchway, Filton and Bradley Stoke; and has this advice on keeping your kids safe online.

CHILDREN are sometimes referred to as digital natives, because they've grown up with technology and can make their way around a smartphone or tablet with ease.

Adults, on the other hand, are called digital tourists, because they are ‘new’ to using technology.

While this is true, adults have life experiences which help shape their use of technology, yet young children don't have a wide range of life experiences. This may lead to them making choices that could make them vulnerable or unclear of the consequences.

With new technology changing every day it can be hard to keep up-to-date with the websites

and apps children are accessing through technology such as phones, tablets and laptops.

Schools can be great at supporting both children and their families to understand how to engage with technology safely.

As a Regional Training Centre for Apple, Meadowbrook Primary School is a centre of excellence in regard to e-safety.

"Meadowbrook provides regular opportunities for children to discuss e-safety both through the school curriculum and through special focus days. These explore many topics including the ways children can keep themselves, and their friends, safe online," Mel Willcox explained.

It's not about stopping your children going online says Mel: "Parents and carers are encouraged to talk about the apps their children are accessing. While some apps and websites have age recommendations, they can be used safely with younger children provided appropriate safeguarding strategies are put in place."

Mel’s top tips for internet safety: Top tips for young people 1. Don’t post any personal information online – your address, email address or mobile number

2. Think carefully before posting pictures or a video of yourself.

Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore 3. Keep your privacy settings as high as possible 4. Never give out your passwords 5. Don’t befriend people you don’t know 6. Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online. Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do 7. Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are 8. Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with

someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude 9. If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately Top tips for parents 1. F you want a little heat from your food as the chillier evenings draw in, then this is the recipe for you. A little bit of warmth, but mild enough for the whole family, including kids.

It’s a mild, but tasty curry with fish that is sustainable, delicious and inexpensive. This is quicker to make from scratch than waiting for a take away and so much cheaper.

My Indian friends use coley for their fish curries because it’s a thick fish that doesn’t go mushy in cooking. Coley is half the price of cod and although it looks rather grey raw, it does turn snowy white when cooked. Because of its low price it’s a great choice for students too heading back to university.

Older readers may remember that once upon a time coley was

very cheap and fed to cats! But please don’t let that put you off; it really is worth giving it a try. Save yourself some money, invite twice as many people for supper and have a feast.

Fish Korma Serves 4

Ingredients: • 2 heaped tbsps korma paste • 4 x 180g of thick white fish. Try coley fillets for a change or else loin of cod, haddock or monkfish.

These are all pretty pricy, so why not give coley a go.

Cook’s Tip) • Half a bunch of fresh coriander, leaves picked, stalks finely chopped • ½ - 1 fresh red chilli, finely sliced • 2 tbsps ground almonds • 1 lemon, cut into wedges • Basmati rice- 2 cups Here’s What You Do • First cook the rice in the microwave. Put 2 cups of rice in a sieve and rinse well with cold water. Place in a medium sized microwaveable container.

• Measure 4 cups of boiling water and add to the container. Cook on HIGH for 8 mins. The water should then be absorbed, if not cook for 2 mins more. The rice should be dry and fluffy.

• Leave in the microwave whilst you cook the fish.

• Put a large frying pan on a medium heat. Use the back of a spoon to spread 1 heaped tablespoon of the korma paste all over the flesh of the fish fillets.

• Add a glug of olive oil to the hot pan, then add the coley, paste side down. Cook for about 4 minutes on each side until you’ve got some colour.

• Turn the heat under the fish up to high and add the greener half of

your sliced spring onions.

• S tir in the remaining korma paste, coconut milk, coriander stalks, ground almonds and most of the fresh chilli and coriander leaves.

Leave some to one side to scatter over the fish when serving. Let it bubble away for a couple of minutes until the fish is starting to flake apart. Taste your sauce and add a squeeze of lemon juice if it needs it.

•D ivide the rice between your plates then top each portion with a piece of your chosen fish.

•P our the sauce over the top then scatter over the reserved spring onions, chilli and reserved coriander leaves. Serve with steamed green veg like pak choy, or spinach. Place lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over.

Cook’s Tips: •C oley is often hard to find on the fresh fish counter in a supermarket. You can usually find it with the frozen fish.

• I f you like a curry with more sauce as my family does, add the whole tin of coconut milk instead of half.

n THORNBURY AND DISTRICT MUSEUM Society aims to share fascination with Thornbury’s past Thornbury Local History and Archaeology Society kicks off its autumn season with a film telling the story of Bristol’s role in the Great War and a talk on the community of Little Stoke.

The Society meets every month for talks from expert speakers on a range of historical and archaeological topics. Some speakers are lecturers at UWE and Bristol University, others have spent a lifetime researching an area of special interest. Film nights also take place regularly.

‘Why Little Stoke, A Forgotten History’ is on the 10th October with Martin Davis. It’s the story of the community that lived in what was once a hamlet and is now a modern housing estate.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style Harley Davidson, 1903 - present: Pure nostalgia At age 3 I sank my teeth into my father’s stomach when he deliberately stood between me and my favourite TV programme ‘CHiPs’. This police comedy-drama followed two sun-drenched cops riding big shiny motorcycles around California. By 17 I wanted to ride motorcycles so much that I refused the driving lessons my parents were offering to pay for. I only wanted to take the bike test.

I did eventually get a bike license, but aesthetically I’m still not sure which I love more, bikes or cars. So when I was handed not one but two Harley Davidsons in California recently and told to ‘go and have fun’, I was so incredibly excited I still can’t quite believe it happened.

To most Brit bikers Harleys

are a bit love’ em or leave ‘em. I have loved them from a distance, which isn’t hard as you can hear them coming from miles away.

That unique and trademarked off-beat V-Twin engine thuds like no other. And then you see the bikes, all bright showy chrome and wonderful throwback 50s styling.

The teardrop tank, the pulled-back bars, the…I’m getting carried away. The truth is that Harleys are deliberately old-fashioned, heavy and expensive. I think they look a bit out of place here in England, and my ride would have been very different had it not happened in the sunshine state. I don’t even want to imagine riding a Harley in central Bristol at rush hour in November.

So let’s get back to the sun: First up the 1200cc Nightster (nearest the camera), a custom version of

the entry-level Sportster. Most of the shiny bits have been painted black, so this bike looks mean and moody up close. The engine might only make about 55hp, but it pulls really well as a result of all that torque, which coupled with a racing clutch means the Nightster shoots off the line very quickly. The riding position was a revelation – I’m used to off-road bikes – all feet forward, arms stretched out in front. Corners were a challenge to begin with, due to a combination of my lack of skill, the sheer length of the bike and steep angle of the front forks. Being a 10 year old bike meant there was quite a bit of vibration as well, certainly more than on the 2013 Road King that I tried next. An 1800cc touring bike and almost top of the range, this is the Harley I would buy. Smoother than the Nightster, more refined

although not really any quicker despite the larger engine as this is such a heavy machine. To get hung up on the 65hp it makes is to totally miss the point: the Road King is all about flexibility and cruising effortlessly at any speed in any gear. The huge footrests and screen make this a surprisingly easy bike to ride, and on the move it is a total pleasure. Just don’t stall it on an uphill gradient at traffic lights like I did. Suddenly the static weight became a problem as I fumbled for balance. Not visible in the photo is a leather shotgun holster, which I’m not sure is an option outside the States.

Ultimately buying a Harley is all about immersing yourself in a brand, with all the associated fun and compromises this means.

People will automatically assume you are a wealthy dentist in the throes of a very clichéd midlife crisis, and the dealers will sell you not just the bike but a whole heap of bolt-on extras, clothes and other paraphernalia. And owning a Harley means accepting some pretty basic technology (pushrod valves anyone?), so-so build quality and limited range from a small fuel tank. Trump’s tariffs are also about to make them more expensive, which will inevitably push the price of used bikes up. None of this mattered to me of course, because riding these Harleys scratched an itch that had been bothering me my whole life. Flawed motorcycles they might be, but I now know for sure that nothing else compares.

SPORTS STARTS HERE AFTER four months of cricket, the 2018 season has finally come to an end, a season in which Thornbury’s first XI have taken another step in the right direction.

There may have been no promotion to cap off such a great year, but there was still plenty of highlights along the way. The club’s scorer Harry Watts gives us his month-by-month review of the 2018 league season.

The season started on May 5 at home against Burbage & Easton Royale, with TCC looking to get the season off to a flyer.

Batting first, Thornbury posted 286-5 which would be enough to secure victory on the opening day of the season. Winning the match after batting first would prove to be a regular feature of May’s cricket, with Thornbury winning all four matches in the opening month after setting a total to defend.

Dan Davis was the standout performer in May, with scores of 88, 55 and 85 to his name, as well as 5-26 with the ball against Trowbridge.

Captain Luke Davis also picked up a couple of fifties and there was success with the ball for Danny Slade, with displays of 3-44 and 5-47 against Burbage and Westbury, respectively.

While May proved to be a comfortable month for Thornbury, there would be no such fortune in June. The unbeaten run was ended by Cheltenham, who inflicted a 38-run defeat and Dumbleton also got the better of Thornbury.

However, wins against Corsham, Rockhampton and Lechlade ensured Thornbury got through June still in a strong position.

One of the highlights was the run chase against Corsham, with the Lezar brothers taking control. Dan made 49* off of just 39 deliveries, but the innings belonged to his older brother, Marc. Marc smashed 101 off just 60 deliveries.

June’s player of the month was Danny Slade, whose consistent performances saw him end with 154 runs and six wickets.

Thornbury’s good season not capped with promotion

Time to relax - Thornbury players enjoy prize giving after the last match of the season picking up wins against Trowbridge, Biddestone and Westbury.

Luke Franklin was player of the month after picking up 10 wickets in the month with his rapid pace, with his second spell proving to be a consistent partnership breaker.

August came around and with just five scheduled games left in the season, promotion was still in the hands of the Thornbury players.

However, the season-defining game came against Corsham at The Ship on August 4th.

Corsham batted first and posted 264, but that doesn’t tell the tale of the story. The fielding display was lack-lustre to say the least. In total four catches went down and they were costly ones, leaking around 60 runs in total.

Chasing 264 will always be a difficult total to chase, but TCC gave themselves no favours at all. Batsmen regularly gave their

wickets away and in the end the visitors came out as comfortable winners.

Despite losing to Corsham, there was still the small matter of the away trip to Cheltenham, the fixture that many deemed as the league-decider. However, rain would be the winner as the points were shared, arguably a blessing in disguise for Thornbury with Cheltenham slightly on top before the rain came.

Dumbleton were dispatched in quick time, after bowling them out for 112-3 in under 30 overs, thanks largely to Dan Davis who picked up four wickets in as many overs with the new ball.

The season ended with a trip to Rockhampton, with a large crowd in attendance all ready to get one back over ‘the noisy neighbours’.

which set the tone and they were backed up well by Greg Mallitte and Harry Wormwell.

Rockhampton made just 164-9 and Thornbury knocked it off with relative ease – a perfect end to a fantastic season.

The player of the month for August was Vishal, who contributed some handy innings’ throughout the month, including an unbeaten 55 against Cheltenham in tough conditions.

TCC ended just five points behind league-winners Cheltenham, showing just how far this side has come after mid-table finishes in the past two seasons. The majority of the side are still 23 and out of the eleven players that featured most prominently this season, seven played youth Cricket for Thornbury, showing that the foundations for a strong 2019 season are in place and the long-term future of the team is looking very bright.

Impressive win on the road for Thorns

By Dave Fox Newent 17 - 22 Thornbury Battling Thornbury returned from Newent with a fine win earned by pragmatic options in attack and committed defence.

In a game that swung from end to end throughout Thornbury reacted better to poor conditions and had the edge in tight forward play. Newent played dry-weather rugby on a distinctly wet afternoon and paid the penalty.

Newent had scored over forty points in each of their home games this season and although

missing influential scrum half James Dean they represented as stern a challenge as Thornbury are likely to encounter this season.

Early on Thornbury’s forwards drove from a lineout, Tom Williams breaking clear and knocking two defenders out of the way before touching down for the opening points.

After a fine rolling Newent maul Tom Webb nipped inside the Thornbury defence and went over for the try. Ollie Critchley was then yellow-carded for swearing. Webb converted his try and Newent were 10-5 ahead at the break.

Thorns regained the lead within ninety seconds of the restart.

The Newent defence made a hash of a high kick from Jak Evans; Luke Panting chased hard, gathered the ball and fed Jake Wood who went over out wide. He then converted his try to make it 12-10.

Ten minutes later Jake Wood increased the lead with a penalty after Jak Evans had broken from a lineout on halfway.

Newent were reduced to fourteen men when a replacement forward was yellow carded for pulling down Tom Constable at a lineout. Tom Luke put the penalty into the corner and a driving lineout, which included several backs, rumbled twenty metres but was held up over the line. From the scrum Thornbury drove Newent over their line for a push-over try claimed by Jack Hussey. Jake Wood’s conversion

increased the lead to 22-10.

Newent piled on the pressure as time began to run out and close to full-time Jack Hussey was yellow carded for pulling a player out of a ruck on halfway.

The home side, desperate for a score to secure a losing bonus point, attacked frantically and in last play centre Charlie Gellert picked the ball up at a ruck on the Thornbury ‘22’ and raced clear for a try between the posts.

10 miler ends Thornbury race season THORNBURY Running Club’s calendar of races for 2018 finished in September with The Oldbury 10 Miler, which starts and finishes at Oldbury Power Station. It was another sold out event for the club, and anyone who completed all 3 of TRC’s races was the lucky recipient of the 3-piece medal.

The race was contested in warm and windy conditions with local Judoka and Olympic bronze medallist, Sally Conway, sounding the horn to get the 300 plus runners on their way down the long straight from Oldbury Power Station and on to the flat and fast course. The race also serves as the Avon Champs 10mile road race championships, so regularly attracts some of the quickest local runners.

The race started at a frenetic pace and it soon became obvious that there would be a runaway leader in the men’s race. Bristol and West’s Kurt Taylor was a class apart and won by almost 3

In the women’s race Helena Youde from Almost Athletes won impressively in 1 hour 4:59 mins.

Susan Duncan from Weston AC and Samantha Harris from Forest of Dean AC were only

separated by 10 seconds in 2nd and 3rd place, Duncan won their race within the race in 1 hour 6:47 mins.

In the women’s field, 4th placed Fiona Blackmore from Bitton Road Runners was the top placed runner who was eligible for the Avon Champs title. Her time was 1 hour 7:37 mins.

Amongst the small army of Thornbury RC volunteers who made the race possible there were 7 home runners taking part.

Matt Johnstone was 35th in 1 hour 7:32 mins. He was followed by the trio of Martin Coyle 65th, Ben Foss 69th and Jay Mosley 74th who pushed each around the course in 1 hour 13:25 mins, 1 hour 14:49 mins and 1 hour 15:11 mins, respectively. Jay Bartley was looking for a 90 min time and paced his effort expertly to finish 176th in 1 hour 29:45 mins, followed by Shelley Honey 226th in 1 hour 37:44 mins and Magda Johnson 289th , who completed her set of 3 TRC medals for 2018 with 1 hour 53:28 mins.

Ultra hard trail no problem for Thornbury runner DAVE Beard became the first Thornbury RC runner to compete in the prestigious Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) in the French ski resort of Chamonix, amongst huge crowds of supporters and a rock concert atmosphere.

Dave joined over 2,500 runners who had qualified for the UTMB by earning points for completing several ultramarathons in the years leading up the race. Their prize was the

right to race over 171k on the trails through the mountain peaks and valleys in France, Italy, Switzerland and looping back to the start in Chamonix, with more vertical ascent than Mt. Everest in the process.

It’s little surprise that almost 800 highly experienced runners, including many of the professional runners, had to drop out at varying stages along the route.

As well as the gruelling mountain terrain, the competitors received an alert on the morning of the race that temperatures were expected to plummet to minus 10 degrees at some of the highest points with strong winds.

Most of the runners in the UTMB have a small team to help at the aid stations dotted along the course.

Team Beard included Dave’s wife, Helen, his 2 children, Mum and friends, who helped to replenish him, make a makeshift bed after 80k at an Italian

After 2 days and 2 nights on the trail Dave made his way down the final bone-jarring

descent into Chamonix on Sunday afternoon in scenes reminiscent of the Tour de France, with streets lined with cheering supporters. Dave’s final position was 1455th place in a time of 44 hours 59:24 mins.

Taryn books her place in Hawaii THE picturesque town of Tenby, on the Pembrokeshire coastline, is transformed once a year into an endurance sport mecca, as it plays host to 2500 triathletes competing in Ironman Wales.

Thornbury RC’s Ironman and woman siblings, Dylan and Taryn Roberts, knew what to expect after competing in last year’s race and had pushed themselves in training to make a much bigger impact on the leaderboard in 2018.

Taryn had finished third in her age category in 2017 and if she won it this time, she would automatically book her place to the Ironman World Championships on the Island of Hawaii in 2019.

Dylan opened with a 1 hour 5 min swim leg and Taryn followed 2 mins later. After upgrading to time trial bikes for this year’s race and focussing more energy on this discipline, they made huge gains and moved through the field.

Taryn’s bike split of 6 hours 34:20 mins was the quickest in her age category and she started the run ahead of her rivals in the 25-29 age category. Dylan was 35 mins quicker on the bike than the previous year as he completed the 112 miles in 6 hours 17:19 mins.

Both produced outstanding runs on a very challenging course.

Taryn’s 3 hour 39:02 mins marathon was the fastest of all 200 age woman group athletes competing and, remarkably, was only bettered by 5 professional athletes on the day.

Her overall time was 11 hours 36:39 mins and she earned the right to compete in the Ironman World Champs in 2019 by comprehensively winning the 2529 age category by almost 1 hour and finishing 13th in the women’s field.

Dylan’s was 22nd in the 25-29 age category and 162nd out of 2,200 male athletes who were competing on the day.

Thornbury’s top tennis tournament gears up to a finale THORNBURY Tennis Club’s Annual Tournament is the most prestigious event held at the club with all preliminary matches scheduled during September

The tournament is open to all members of all ages.

Men’s Singles There were 7 entries in the Men’s Singles, including 5 time winner of the tournament, Luke Harrison. All players played a single 30 minute set against each other player, giving a total of 21 sets. The weather was threatening, with a few spots of rain in the afternoon, but not sufficient to stop play.

The match between the junior Dom Boardman and Freddie Savage was extremely close with Freddie just shading the result 6-5 as the 30 minutes horn sounded.

Luke Harrison won all his matches and Felix Boyes won all bar his set against Luke meaning that they will play each other in the final.

Ladies Singles There were only 3 entries in the Ladies Singles. The players played each other for 2 sets, each timed at 30 minutes.

Brooke Daunton, a talented junior player, won all her sets, taking her through to the final.

Rae Bezuidenhout and Linda Mantle had an extremely close encounter. Linda won a very tight first set 6-5 and Rae secured a double break of serve to win the second set 6-2 and clinch the match with the most games won. Rae qualified for the final against Brooke.

Mixed Doubles The Mixed Doubles event received 6 entries. The pairs played time limited sets against each other pair. There were a number of extremely tense matches.

Megan O’Connor & Brendan Wilde got off to a good start, getting an early 3-1 lead, but then Brooke Daunton & Luke Harrison found their form and fought back to narrow the gap to 5-4. Brendan ultimately managed to hold his serve in the next game and take the match 6-4.

Tony Light & Rae Bezuidenhout were 5-2 up against Luke & Brooke but the scores moved to 5-5. With 20

The result of the 15 sets of tennis was that Brendan & Megan and Luke & Brooke will play each other in the final.

The Men’s & Ladies Doubles preliminaries were delayed for a week by bad weather.

Hockey club ready for new season and numerous others will be attending the academy and development centre.

Andy Newell received the Richard Powell Memorial award, presented by Avon County Women’s Hockey Umpires’ Association. Andy undertook his first umpire training less than 3 years ago but has since played a central role in umpiring for the club and beyond. The Richard Powell Memorial Award recognises the huge contribution that Andy makes to umpiring within the local area, and the commitment he has shown to developing his umpiring career.

As the club continue to strengthen their junior section and as players progress into adult hockey the club continue to look for new members; young and old, returning or new to hockey. Anyone interested in joining should visit the clubs website: www.yatehockey.com

YATE Hockey Club are looking forward to the new season after a successful campaign last time round with several of their members receiving awards and national recognition.

The club, who have three ladies teams, two men’s teams and a thriving junior section recently held their annual President’s Day HockeyFest, which raised £320 for Brain Tumour Charity.

A successful 2017/18 season saw the ladies second team win their league and secure promotion into North Division in the West Club Women’s Hockey League. The U14 girls won the Avon Junior Hockey League in their age category.

Within the Junior section Lucie Goulden, Charlotte Hollywood and Will Newell have been invited to join the England Hockey Bristol Performance Centre (for those aged 14-17)

Thornbury town take step up after promotion season THORNBURY Town have entered a new era after playing their first game in the Uhlsport Hellenic League, having secured promotion following a League and Cup double last season.

After a frantic summer getting all the necessary ground improvements in place that are required for this higher level of football it was with some nervousness that Thornbury welcomed Cheltenham Saracens to the Mundys.

The team adjusted quickly to the increased pace and physicality of Hellenic League football and it was Saracens’s defence that struggled in the early stages of the first half but Town failed to convert their chances. Cheltenham came out the stronger side in the second half, hitting the woodwork early on.

Just after the hour mark, Saracens took the lead when Goodhall scored and although Thornbury pressed for an equaliser, Saracens doubled their lead 15 minutes later, with Harlie Price netting. Even with a late long range shot by Cheltenham hitting the woodwork, Thornbury didn’t let their heads drop and were rewarded with a last minute goal, Tom Webb threading the ball through to Harry Brock who lifted the ball over the keeper to score.

Town then entertained Cirencester Town Development when a good sized crowd witnessed an entertaining game.

The opening 20 minutes was played at a frantic pace with Thornbury enjoying the majority of possession and creating a couple of half chances but took

the lead on the half hour mark, Marcus Wormwell steering his shot past Kuczinsky into the corner of the net.

Two minutes later Thornbury doubled their lead through Toby Bennett. The visitors pushed forward to try to get back into the game and were awarded a converted penalty. However within a minute Thornbury were awarded a penalty of their own when Joe Guest was fouled.

Bennett’s spot kick was saved but Wormwell was on hand to net the rebound.

Moments later Fullerton could have put the game beyond Thornbury but Kurtis Parkin again saved well at his feet.

The introduction of Harry Brock 20 minutes from time changed Towns fortunes as he latched on to a through ball from Toby Bennett, outpaced his marker and crossed for Marcus Wormwell to net at the far post.

Town stepped up the pressure in search of a winner which came in the second minute of stoppage time. Brock was again put clear and although Zoldan saved at his feet the ball broke free and Benjamin was quickest to react, firing home with the keeper stranded.

n SPORT IT’S three years since Tytherington Rocks and Thornbury last met but their recent encounter had exactly the same outcome with Thornbury enjoying a comfortable win.

They got off to the perfect start when man of the match Matt Davis headed home a Jim Brock free kick in the second minute.

However Rocks’ response was almost immediate when, 4 minutes later, Joe Mills equalised, his shot on the run giving Kurtis Parkin no chance.
