against breast cancer.
Join the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, a powerful event to raise awareness and funds to end breast cancer. When you walk with us, you are joining the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting more than 300 communities to finish the fight. Last year, nearly 1.2 million Making Strides walkers turned awareness into action by helping to raise more than $60 million for the American Cancer Society to help save lives from breast cancer. While most Making Strides events have no registration fee or minimum amount to raise, participants can maximize their lifesaving impact by raising money online or collecting donations to turn in on the day of the event. The noncompetitive three- to five-mile walks honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, raise awareness to reduce risk of the disease, and raise funds to end breast cancer.
Know the facts on breast cancer in the United States. t Breast cancer affects thousands of women each year. In 2014, 232,670 women are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. t Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women (excluding skin cancer) and second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women. t Mammography can identify breast cancer at an early stage, usually before physical symptoms develop, when the disease is most treatable. Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health. t The five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer that has not spread to the lymph nodes or other locations is 98 percent.
Three ways you help us finish the fight. Thanks to your support of our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, we are doing the most in every community to help people with breast cancer today and striving to find cures to end the disease tomorrow. Groundbreaking Cancer Research We’re investing in cutting-edge breast cancer research to better understand, prevent, find, and treat the disease. Comprehensive Support One in every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer turns to us for help and support. Access to Mammograms We’re helping ensure access to mammograms for women who need them so more lives are saved.
For more information about the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and how you can get involved, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit MakingStridesWalk.org.

BY HIS STRIPES, I AM HEALED
Excited and thrilled that I was offered a long term teaching assignment while working towards a Masters of Art in Education was a dream come true. After years of studying, I was finally teaching in a classroom and loving every moment. It had been only a few short months ago that I had completed six years of undergrad studies. Determined to stay on the Dean’s List while working part- time proved to be demanding at times as I was a widow with seven beautiful, bright, and ambitious children of my own. Somewhere in the midst of rearing my children and fulfilling my dreams I forgot about my health. I allowed many years to pass putting off having a mammogram. Four months into my dream job I began to experience unusual anxiety for the need of a mammogram. There was no pain nor obvious presence of a lump of some sort, but just an unexplained urgency to be screened. To my dismay and dread I was told to return for a biopsy after the mammogram results. I was advised not to be alarmed that something was found suspicious in my Xrays because most abnormalities found in a mammography weren’t breast cancer. Well, those were short lived words. The biopsy revealed cancer in the duct of my left breast. I was in total disbelief and denial. There were no previous x-rays to compare the new screening and it appeared to have spread. The news of the diagnosis caused my church to assemble for a special prayer meeting. As I was being wheeled into the operating room I noticed a clock that hung over the door. Although I didn’t take note of the hour of the day, I recognized what hour it was in my life. I realized my loving family and friends who were in the waiting room, would not be passing through these doors with me today. And so… I held tight to the hands of the man who promised he would never leave or forsake me. Following surgery it was revealed that the cancer had not traveled to any lymph nodes and had been detected in its earliest stage. No radiation or chemo was needed.
All the glory goes to God. It has been over nine years, and I have been blessed to teach many students, and enjoy many grandchildren. I leave these words that have been penned and etched across my heart, “ If anyone should ever write my life story for whatever reason there might be; Jesus will be there between each line of pain and glory.

LET TER FROM — THE EDITOR
Fall is my favorite time of year. Even though living in LA doesn’t lend itself to the changing of the leaves (it’s 90 degrees here in October!), there is still a festive feeling in the air between the onset of the holiday season, new fall fashions to shop for and new fall television to watch…which brings me to our cover girl Jeannie Mai, one of the hosts on the new national talk show “The Real.” This fashion stylist and television host truly is the real deal and we are thrilled to have her as our cover story for this issue. In fact, we packed in so many inspirational and entertaining stories (from doing Oktoberfest on a dime to the way actress Rose Abdoo “method dresses” for every audition), we hope you enjoy reading them as much as we did putting it all together. With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness month, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention all the beautiful and uplifting tales of the strong breast cancer survivors we included throughout this issue as well. As they retell their stories of triumph, they serve as an inspiration to all of us. Warmly, Robin Tolkan-Doyle

CANCER- A LIFE CHANGING JOURNEY
I was still determined not to complain about life as usual—until I found out that the next thing on the agenda was chemo. Thank you, Jesus! I was still determined I wasn’t going to complain because it was not going to help my situation. A year and a half of chemo and all I could do was sit every other week in the chair and cry because I knew that I had been cut (in my mind mutilated) and now poison was pumped into my body. I purposed in my heart not to complain but to maintain a positive attitude. Positive attitude I must say YES! Praise God! He kept me praising and worshiping Him the whole time. A year and a half has now past, and next on the agenda is radiation. WOW! Five days a week for three months. More tears because now, after being mutilated and poisoned, I’m now being burned. Two years of baldness and what seemed like house arrest, I was able to return to work but had to take a chemo pill for five years. I praise God, February 2014, I took my last chemo pill, and I don’t have to see the oncologist until February 2015. God is good.
On May 29, 2008, my life changed for better or worse—didn’t quite know at the time. That was the day I found out I had stage 2B breast cancer, and that it was very aggressive and on the move. One thing I did know for sure, I was going to go on this journey without complaints. Things happened so fast that day: various tests, biopsies and, then, confirmed three days later— cancer. June 13 surgery, WOW! It was traumatizing to wake up from surgery to find you have a missing body part.
May 13, 2014: reconstructive surgery. What a blessing. I’m amazed every day I look in the mirror and see what modern medicine can do. For six years, I felt as though something was missing (it was, but I didn’t complain). My mind no longer plays little tricks on me, making me think something is there when in reality it’s not. Today, I can look in the mirror and thank God (thank you Jesus!) for what He’s doing in my life and the amazing changes that the doctors performed on my body. One more surgery, on October 17, and I’ll be done with all the surgeries. Thank you Jesus! The journey is coming to an end. Still praising and thanking God for what He is doing for me.

U.S. Designers Take Over Vancouver Fashion Week By Robin Tolkan-Doyle
For the 13th year in a row, Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) showcased its spring/summer 2015 international designer collections throughout a weeklong celebration beginning September 15th, 2014 with its opening gala. Designers from more than 30 countries took over The Queen Elizabeth Plaza with their parade of runway shows in front of 25,000 guests including industry professionals, buyers, celebrities, stylists and international media. France, Italy, Japan, India, Norway, Australia, Korea and Brazil were just some of the countries represented by designers at this season’s VFW, not to mention, the United States. Representing the US were Jessie Liu from San Francisco, CA, Swati Padmaraj from Seattle, WA, Sophie Karen from Seattle, WA, Rebekah Adams from Tacoma, WA, and Wendy Ohlendorf from Portland, OR.
Jessie Liu - Simple Pair Fashion Design | San Francisco, California With a Masters in Fine Art from the Academy of Art University, Jessie Liu brings light, color and imagery to her designs. Jessie has twice been selected to showcase her pieces at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York, most recently in 2012 with her graduation collection. She subsequently received best young designer’s award from Arts Thread/WGSN and was sponsored to present her collection in the Who’s Next show in Pairs, France. Most recently, Jessie’s inaugural collection “The Incense of Color” has received first place in the InspiRare-sponsored fashion design contest, which entitled her to a full-blown fashion show at 2014 Vancouver Fashion Week.
Swati Padmaraj - Atiz | Seattle, Washington Originally from Mumbai, Swati has spent the last 23 years in the US composing a style that reflects the femininity and beauty of both American and Indian cultures. Dubbed as 'Traditional with a Twist', the Atiz collections combine the alluring silhouettes of Asia, the opulent textiles of the east and the classic cut of upscale American daywear. Based in Seattle, Atiz has been featured in multiple fashion platforms including the Fashion Show in the Seattle Art Museum at the Diwali Ball, the WAPI Fashion Show in Seattle, and has been invited to Phoenix Fashion Week in Arizona this September 2014. 30

Sophie Karen - Dawson & Deveraux | Seattle, Washington At the fashion crossroads of London and Paris, Dawson & Deveraux was brought to life by creative director and lead designer Sophie Karen. Built on quality construction, clean lines, and an international perspective, Dawson & Deveraux strives to make women feel beautiful in every piece. This Seattle-based brand has previously been featured at the FW2014 Vancouver Fashion Week and looks forward to another gorgeous show at the SS2015 event.
Rebekah Adams | Tacoma, Washington Rebekah Adams, a world traveler with a degree in Science in Fashion Merchandising and Design, was recently selected to compete in the Independent Designer Runway Show on the Vogue magazine Runway during Bellevue Collection’s Fashion Week in September 2014. Rebekah strives to create structured pieces that encompass a woman's inner strength, helping to showcase individuality and confidence.
Wendy Ohlendorf - Magenta | Portland, Oregon Wendy Ohlendorf has been a storeowner for over 20 years in the Portland community. Her love of fashion design came from her time in school at the Art Institute of Tampa where she focused on architecture and received her degree in Interior Design. As a collector of vintage apparel, being able to repurpose fabric is an important element in creating her designs. Incorporating vintage textiles into her pieces allows their stories to be carried on from one garment into the next. FA S H I O N

This Editorial was inspired to its realization in the Baroque era, on the XVII Century. For its creation, we located a Palace in Segovia, ancient city of Castilla (Spain), and sometimes worked as the court room. The Segovia Episcopal Palace www.palacioepiscopaldesegovia.com was the residence of successive Bishops from 1760, except on rare exceptions. Thus, during the French occupation, hosted the Governor of Segovia, General Tilly, for three years (1809-1811), and his successor, General Spert (until 1812). In July 1811, he rested at the Jose Bonaparte, while passing by Segovia, on his way to Paris, and gave audience to all city officials. The collaboration of Atelier “La Tua Pelle” www.latuapellecostura.com, for lending us their wonderful designs, has been fundamental to the development of the project. We have tried to reflect the Baroque aesthetic, which was based on: The use of curved shapes, concave and convex. The light and color to create forms, not the drawing. The realism of the performances. The Baroque was a period in European history that is full of contrasts, with demographic problems, stagnation of the European population as a result of epidemics and famine, agrarian crises while enjoying a booming colonial trade and manufacturer’s production. Society was stratified, with a privileged minority (nobility, clergy and bourgeoisie) and most unprivileged (peasants and urban working classes). The maximum power was set to the absolute monarchy. The king had a power from God in whose name dictated laws, the government exercised and served justice. However this High Society cultivated the extreme refinement, the exaltation of beauty, and a taste for the theatrical and symbolism, with the intention of introducing the viewer into the world of feelings and sensations. The thought of the time took around art as inspiration exaltation of feelings, imagination, duality, etc. Art was a reflection of this era. The aesthetics of Baroque surpassed the Renaissance Classicism and introduced more complex elements, full of movement and color such as Baldacchino by Bernini in the Vatican. The seventeenth century was the Golden Age of Spanish painting. Diego Velázquez was the highest representative of the Golden Age and the most universal Spanish painter. He cultivated virtually every genre, from portraits using the example "Las Meninas" historical paintings such as "The Surrender of Breda" and mythological themes with popular characters such as humanized "Triumph of Bacchus" or "The Thread Spinners" 56

In his technique is much notable the use of aerial perspective and their complex compositions, with different levels and points of light. During this historical period, Scientists made very important progress. In astronomy, Nicolaus Copernicus, first, to be followed by Galileo Galilei, stating the Earth is not the center of the universe and also revolved around the sun. In botanical, gardens were established and the properties and uses of plants are studied. In physics, Isaac Newton discovered the law of universal gravitation. In medicine, William Harvey developed the theory of the circulation, from the discovery of the pulmonary circulation by Servetus in the previous century. The Baroque was definitely a period of exaltation of light and color, the taste for beauty, elegance, delicacy inciting dream halls of mirrors incredible palaces, dances, music, courtesans, and beautiful dresses confections maybe it was the beginning of the cult of fashion. In this photo shoot, we wanted to capture this moment in history, trying to put us back in that magical and mysterious era that encloses the Baroque. We have tried to find a scenario according to this time, in which time seems to have stopped and its characters, costumes, makeup and decorations have been trapped in that period. That mysterious moment that the machinations roamed the corners of the palace, setting the pace of the society of the time, the economy and everyday life, is that we wanted to reflect in these photographs.

Fashion expert and “The Real” talk host Jeannie Mai is always thinking of the bigger picture. She uses the same ingredients she used in the beginning of her career: hard work and determination with the belief that she can and will conquer anything. She believes in thinking about the bigger picture, taking all the little steps to get there and appreciating everyone along the way. Mai co-hosts with other strong and unique women on the talk show “The Real”: Tamara (a mother who’s in love with being a mother and wife), Loni (the comedian who doesn’t define herself by her relationship status), Adrienne (the baby of the group who is reinventing herself ), and Tamar (the can do it all newly mother). “Its unexpected and always fun,” says Mai about working with such a diverse group of women. “The girls have such different personalities, and it feels like sisters, because we fought to get our show on the air and now we have it. These ladies are like family to me and I admire all of them.” Mai is a fashion expert for the shows “How Do I Look” and the Today Show’s “Insider”. She loves to help everyday women who want to look beautiful. “I like dressing women in affordable transitional clothing and I like talking to those women who get up early in the morning to take their kids to school and want to feel good. Those women are thinking about everyone else instead of themselves.” Mai is also passionate about fighting human traffic. “Not for Sale” is one of the organizations she supports when she is not working in front of the camera. Mai was unaware of human trafficking until about three years ago when her cousin was unfortunately involved. She also a huge supporter of any women’s foundation, “Women of the World”, “Kickstarter,” and “anything supporting women.” Mai is apart of the non-profit “Heartbeat Vietnam,” a smaller charity for children who have congenital heart disease and “Nightlight International,” another human trafficking organization.

The advice Mai gives to individuals wanting to follow their dreams? “Number one: Have a plan: Just like Waze and Google Maps, if you don’t put in your destination, you're not going to get there.” Where do you want to go? You need to be prepared and take all the necessary steps. Number two: Have solid mentors and surround yourself with close friends. Those are the people who will help you grow you. So, plant them in your life. Number three: have an attitude of gratitude all the way. You will not make it far if you’re cutting people loose. Appreciate every person you meet.”

H E A LT H Y & 1 3 Y E A R S C A N C E R F R E E
In the spring of 2001, I had just celebrated my 34th birthday when I was given the most terrifying news of my life and it went something like this: "Toki, I'm so sorry but you have breast cancer" are the words uttered by my doctor when he called to break the devastating news to me several days after my biopsy. My heart stopped beating as I dropped the phone and began howling in disbelief. "This CAN’T be happening, it CAN’T be true…" The whirlwind days after the initial diagnosis were completely terrifying, overwhelming and utterly surreal. Tough decisions had to be made swiftly… who can think straight when the lump inside your body is growing at an abnormally rapid rate and had already doubled in volume in a matter of one month. I kept thinking that this was one bad dream and it wasn’t truly happening…. and yet it was horrifically real.... I was one of the statistics now. I was the unlucky one out of eight. With no time to stall, a crucial decision was made to perform a mastectomy and have my left breast surgically removed. It was a tragic and extremely painful experience, but somehow succumbing to the effects of chemotherapy were far, far worse…. worse than I could ever have imagined. thing but despair.
The process was drawn out and the effect on my body was shocking. I dreaded each session and no matter how positive I tried to be, as soon as the needle touched my skin, I could only cringe in agony and cry big fat tears until I passed out from the pain relieving “cocktail” given to me prior to each session. I didn’t have a choice… going through chemo was a hard lesson in surrendering whatever control or vanity I might have had. I watched my coveted hair fall out slowly at first, then in huge clumps, and finally having my fiancé shave it all off. I could not look in the mirror for days. I battled the constant nausea and vomiting which no medication could relieve. My mood swings from unstable hormone levels with the onset of early menopause drove me crazy. There was extreme energy loss, both physically and emotionally, desire for life had all but vanished, and severe depression consumed every moment… All of this took away my usual joyful spirit until I no longer recognized myself. At times during the 5 months of chemo, I had moments of feeling upbeat and awakened by what I was going through, affirmed by the love and support from my friends and family. But mostly I felt scared, forlorn, disheartened and helpless. I kept thinking that I should be grateful that we caught it early (and I was)…. that I should be indebted to the excellent team of doctors & nurses treating me (and I was)…. that I should be comforted that I was not alone…. that I should be thankful that I was still alive…. But even with all the love and support surrounding me, I nevertheless felt vulnerable, insecure and very much alone, frightened and unable to feel anything but despair. My boys are my absolute joy in life and everything I do is for and because of them. I’m surrounded by loving family and amazing friends. I turned my love of photography into a business. I love photographing people and my hope is that I can bring a little bit of joy into my client’s lives and leave them with a little piece of my heart.

T H E S T O RY O F C O U R A G E
How did you start on this journey? One evening in July of 2012, I was lying in bed ready to go to sleep for the night. I was feeling uncomfortable near my bra and under my arm. I just figured my bra was not very comfortable and irritating me. I continued to rub that area and right away I knew that something was not right. I leaned over to my husband and told him that I felt something and guided his hand around the area. He told me it was nothing to worry about it and that it could even be a bite. I thought about it over and over in my mind about all the “what ifs.” I lay awake and could not wait to call my OBGYN in the morning. When I went to get a mammogram, I had a feeling it was not going to be good. Friends told me that if the radiologist comes in the room and asks to take more film, that something is usually wrong. I asked the radiologist if she saw anything wrong and she said she’ll have to look at everything and that someone would call me if there were anything to be concerned about. I left the doctor’s office to pick up my son from baseball, which was two miles away. It was only a matter of minutes before I received a call with the news that they did see something and I needed to meet with a surgeon right away. What was the first thing that ran through your head when you found out the news? Well, so many things. My two boys, who were nine and ten years old at the time, immediately ran through my head. I thought, “Why me?” Then, the humorous side of me was looking forward to a boob lift/reduction. Another thing that I was worried about was the trip to Rome that my husband and I were planning to take in a month. In case you’re wondering, we did go! What was your perception of the disease and how did that change? I originally thought that cancer was not curable. I realized that is not true. As I found my way through this journey, it helped me to stay strong for myself and those around me by not getting caught up in everyone else’s stories about their relatives or friends who have/had cancer. This is my story, my journey and no one else’s. I knew that this disease was going to be a long haul and I needed to stay on top of everything my own way. What are some random things that kept you going during your chemo treatments? Spending time in a recliner and letting the nurses wait on me! As a mom of two active boys, this was a welcome treat. Watching my hair fall out knowing I will be saving money on cut and color kept me going. Looking forward to talking to other chemo patients and their families and always looking for that perfect scarf or hat to make me feel good. And, of course spending time with my visitors, and being surprised by all the well wishes.
Beyond the treatment, what was the most annoying thing to deal with during this time in your life? All the surgeries and procedures, having others taking care of my family while I lay in bed, and having my kids listen to me throw up (I did tell them I was getting the ickys out.) What do you wish you could have told yourself back in the beginning of it all? That there is an end! And that is only a period in my life. It is not my entire life. I will not be identified as “that woman who had breast cancer.” And one day, people willstop buying me everything pink. How has this event in your life empowered you? I know realize that stress and the food we put in our bodies can change you life overnight. Breast cancer needs to be detected early and everyone needs to take care of his or her own bodies. You only get one to live.

The Beauty of Bella Schneider B y R o b i n To l k a n - D o y l e
Bella Schneider takes the science of skincare seriously. Starting in 1976, when she opened her first LaBelle Day Spa & Salon in the Bay Area of California, Bella emerged as a clinical skincare leader, advancing esthetic science with innovations in such areas as ethnic skincare, peels and peer education. Known internationally as a product formulator and Crystal Award winner, Bella publishes regularly on esthetics topics and enjoys a hands-on relationship with her clients, ranging from Silicon Valley executives like Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Sheryl Sandberg, celebrities like Michelle Pfeiffer and Daryl Hannah, and political figures like Carly Fiorina and Condoleezza Rice (who only allows Bella to give her facials). Aside from juggling three premiere spa locations (two in Palo Alto and one in Union Square in San Francisco), Bella also has an extensive line of luxury skincare products (BSB Culmine) that consistently receives media attention in publications like InStyle and Glamour. Recently, Thrifty Hunter had a chance to sit down with this successful, self-made skincare expert to find out how her career in beauty began.
How did you become interested in skincare? It all started for me when I was 14 years old with bad acne. I lived in Israel at the time and was looking to improve my complexion. I ended up having my skin treated at a high-end beauty boutique near my house. During this time is when I realized that I had a real interest and aptitude for this field. The aestheticians asked my mom if she would let me help in their establishment after school for a few hours during the week since they sensed I was very interested and capable. From this early experience, I was able to observe and learn from these aestheticians, who from Eastern Europe, as they worked and mixed their own products to create their own peels, masks, powders, creams, etc. I did not mean to stay in this business. At the time, I just saw it as a recreation. What girl would not be fascinated with learning all about beauty? I was truly seeking academia and this initially, was only a way to support myself during my studies. When I arrived in the United States to go to college, I started working full time to support myself. I landed a job with Estee Lauder and it was there where I realized women had no clue how to take care of their skin! They where using products on top of products with no idea. When I finished Berkeley, I decided to open my own small skin care clinic and teach a bit. Before long, I started formulating and I never stopped. 74

Who is the Bella Schneider Beauty customer? My customers range from all ages with all skin types. I service three generations in my spas. Personally, I have lived through all skin stages, from acne to moderate oily skin to hormonal breakouts and now aging! The culmination of my expertise is based on my total knowledge and hands-on servicing. My formulations stem from my approach to solving skin issues. I believe in elegant formulations with real ingredients that are pleasing to the senses, friendly and effective. The motivation behind the BSB Culmine Collection was to offer the general public the same knowledge and products that my high-end clients in San Francisco and Palo Alto have been receiving at my spas for years. I started with products catering toward anti-aging and now I am formulating more products for all skin issues that I encounter daily in my work. What makes the Bella Schneider Beauty Culmine line different? Myself! BSB Culmine is the "culmination" of my years of expertise working in a clinical spa. My laboratory is my spa. Between all of my clients who I work with and all of my technicians, we are always busy addressing real skin issues. I formulate with the most innovative ingredients available in three different parts of the world where they harvest the best minerals, the most untapped seaweed, fresh cells technologies, acid peptides and SPFs. How do you source ingredients for your products? I am always educating myself and staying on top of new innovations and approaches in the field. I read profiles from labs about the latest ingredients, my chemists contact me with new lab submission samples, and I visit trade shows around the world. What are your favorite products in the collection? First and foremost, my cleansers. Most people do not give enough importance to cleansing, but that is where it all starts. That is also why my collection is so wide. Every skin-type and age needs great cleansing. I also love my exfoliating pads. They are loaded with brighteners, exfoliating ingredients and astringents. My serums are very effective and target important hydration and aging issues. I also can't live without My LIP Solve, my eye creams and eye serum with the de-puffing globes. What is the most popular product in your collection? The Micro exfoliating Powder Cleanser, the eye de-puffing globes + serums and exfoliating pads are currently the most popular. What is on the horizon for Bella Schneider Beauty? I am formulating a lot these days, coming up with four new brightening formulas along with a Do-It-Yourself At Home Brightening Kit. There is also a new facial for my spas on the horizon! Lots of surprises in store! LUMIPELÉ® PIGMENT LITE ANTI-AGING SERUM $65 The ultimate serum for maintaining your daily anti-aging and skin brightening needs. My family objected, but our love was stronger than their opinion and soon they saw Earl for the remarkable man he was and one who absolutely adored me. We were married 8 months later. Very soon after that, our first son was born. The birth of our son was a miracle since I was not supposed to bear children. I had epilepsy, having suffered with Grand Mal Seizures since the age of 14. The anti-seizure medication caused birth defects in the first trimester 99.9% of the time. I informed my doctor that I was stopping the medication and was moving forward with this pregnancy. Of course, the doctor did not agree, but he could not argue with my decision. A healthy baby boy was born.... Miracle! We had several miscarriages before the birth of my second son… another healthy baby. I have not had a seizure, nor had an aura of a seizure, since I stopped the medication in l986… another miracle. Life was wonderful. I was married to the love of my life. We had a near perfect marriage (really!). I resigned from my successful career to stay home with my children in l987. I was privileged to stay at home for 12 years. I ran a successful daycare business for many years and was one of the top in the nation in Tupperware sales.
In 1996, tragedy struck again. My husband became gravely ill and was given one week to live. I was told to get my affairs in order as there was no hope. Earl was diagnosed with HIV and full blown AIDS. He had only 5 T-cells (healthy people have over 2500 T-cells). In his 20’s. We believe he contracted the disease from a needle prick before precautions were taken or anyone knew anything of this disease. Skincare that is all natural, vegan, cruelty-free and organic is hard to come by. Limoneira is a Southern California company that has not only developed an organic line of skin care, they are a leader in the movement of sustainable agriculture. The Limoneira skincare line has the healing properties of lemons and avocados, which are grown in Santa Paula and other California locations. We visited the industry leading sustainable agribusiness, which has been in business for more than 120 years, and got a first hand look at how they do it: •Limoneira’s skin care line contains a new avocado compound discovery from ethno botanical research that promotes natural metabolic processes to regenerate skin cells for younger and firmer skin. • Lemon juice is a non-chemical way of lightening age spots and brightening skin discolorations, with the added benefit of the mild acidity of lemons helping to remove dry, flaky skin buildup to create a more even skin tone. • Avocado oils and extracts used in Limoneira avocado-based products visibly help to restore skin damaged by the sun. •Lavender adds a soothing aroma and helps to calm redness/inflammation, and the pump style dispensers eliminate the need for added preservatives that might otherwise irritate sensitive skin. Dermatologist approved, these products target the skin on a cellular level to restore skins elasticity, which is the first visible sign of aging skin. The benefits of lemons and avocados help to brighten the skin as well as giving the skin a firmer and a more youthful hydrated glow.
Thomas Gonzalez Manager Food Safety & Sustainability

Bring Balance to Your Body with Seasonal Eating Let the foods you eat this fall be your healing powers By Jennifer Leff MS, CPT
Are you in a food rut? Tired of eating the same foods each week and feeling stressed with low energy? Battling different types of physical or emotional distress?
In today’s world, it is the norm to eat packaged and processed foods at mealtime. They are convenient, easy, and economical in the short term. However, the long term effects of this way of eating can be more damaging than they are worth. Don’t worry, if you have been eating this way. The body is forgiving and we have information to help you feel better starting today. Did you know that with the right nutritional changes, many physical and emotional discomforts can be resolved naturally by a few lifestyle changes? Derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine centuries ago, the practice of Seasonal Eating is making a comeback to promote good health and emotional balance. This practice is now shared around the world. It is so easy that anyone can allow the foods that they are eating to become their own healing powers. To help us better understand Seasonal Eating and why we should follow this practice, we consulted with Nutritionist Nilli Grutmann founder of Healthy Roots Nutrition in Calabasas, California and healthyrootsnutrition.com. She specializes in helping her clients who suffer from depression, IBS, thyroid conditions, hormonal imbalances, skin issues, and weight issues. Mrs. Grutmann’s background allows her to effectively utilize a combination of eastern principles and western approaches in her practice. Ms. Grutmannn explains that we are transformative creatures and respond to environmental changes such as the changing of the seasons. Therefore, this requires us to make changes as our environment changes. For example, the foods we need and how they are prepared impact us physically and emotionally. Attending to these needs are necessary to focus on balancing the body to avoid disease. 78

FOOD
Seasonal Eating can be followed for prevention or healing. When planning meal preparations with foods that are in season and locally grown, you are following a practice called Seasonal Eating. These foods are harvested at their peak locally and offer you a great savings at the checkout stand. Also, by adding in season fruits and vegetables to your diet, you are allowing your body to prepare for the particular challenges that the different seasons bring. According to Ms. Grutmann, there are specific body parts that need more attention in each season and there are emotional components that go with each body part. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the seasons are autumn/fall, winter, spring, summer 1, and summer 2. Many of the organs that require focus each season are looked upon as opposite forces that when linked together will balance each other, otherwise known as “yin/yang”. Together, these organs support one another for optimal health. In autumn/fall, the lungs and large intestine are the focus organ systems (lungs are the “yin” and the large intestine are the “yang”). During the fall months, our digestive system slows and it needs warm, heavier foods that are eaten in smaller quantities and natural foods that are best for the lungs and large intestine. In the fall, the lungs govern the need for organization and boundaries in your environment. For example, creating limits and boundaries with relationships in life to achieve balance. Just as your lungs need to clear and allow air in and out, we need to get rid of the clutter and emotional baggage in our lives to fully live in the moment. To help balance the lungs, the large intestine also needs attention. In Chinese Medicine, the large intestine is responsible for managing and releasing stress. Having an outlet for stress and recognizing the joys in your life has a big impact as well. If stress gets the best of you and you are not able to fully release the stress by creating boundaries and time for yourself, then feelings of grief, sadness, or

depression can appear. In addition, constant worrying can cause constipation or chronic diarrhea. Ms. Grutmann’s favorite foods to stay healthy this fall are pumpkin, butternut squash, sage, leaks, garlic, and ginger. They are easy to prepare and you will be able to find them at your local market. Pumpkin is very low in calories but rich in vitamins and minerals. Butternut squash is a delicious autumn staple that is filled with phytonutrients that support the proper functions of your nervous and immune systems. While sage is an herb, it is helpful for clearing moisture from the lungs during cold and flu season. Both garlic and ginger help eliminate phlegm from the lungs. Also, eating foods with ginger, chili, onions and olives will boost your immune system. Daikon Radish (the Japanese name of a white radish) clears phlegm as well and improves lung function while providing you with several antioxidants. Leeks (a close relative to onions and garlic) also improve lung function chi (qi). If you are feeling frazzled, these foods will help gather your energy to aid in digestion. Also, if fighting a cold or the flu, Ms. Grutmann says to eat foods with a sour flavor, such as sauerkraut, lemon, and tart apples. Apple cider vinegar kills bacteria and improves the immune system, while pickled/fermented food regulates bowels. Please see the recipes below as many of these foods and herbs are in them. Seasonal Eating is the perfect tool to help you become more in tune with your body. As we connect with our environment, it is important that we listen to our bodies as they give us clues on how to bring balance to our lives. Our goal for you this fall is to be healthy and happy by eating the right foods and managing your stress. My Granny is a survivor of the disease. She was diagnosed at a time when her grandchildren were young and a huge part of her life. My grandmother realized that she was not only thankful to God, friends, and family around her, but she was also grateful to the hardworking doctors and researchers behind the scenes. To show her gratitude she set up a fund and continually donates to Cancer Research UK on a monthly basis. This is a cause closest to my grandmother’s heart as she believes it is her duty to give back to those whom saved her life. Her actions, strength, love and gracious lifestyle are all reasons I believe she was able to mentally fight through and beat cancer.

The Traditions of Oktoberfest By Karen Evans
While there are many charming local Oktoberfests held across North America (the Oktober specials at Olive Garden don’t count), the best way to enjoy this German event is in its birthplace: Munich, Germany. A tradition well over 200 years, Oktoberfest now attracts six million visitors over 17 days – the last weeks of September leading to the first Sunday of October. It is also known as the ‘Wiesen,” which is German for ‘Grass.” The festival is held in an area named the Theresienwiese (field of Therese), located near Munich’s center. It began as the setting for the wedding of Ludgwig I of Bavaria and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, and evolved into the extravagant Oktoberfest bacchanal we now if for today. The main attraction of Oktoberfest is its 13 traditional beer tents (and all beer must be brewed within Bavaria). However, Oktoberfest is also like an oversized state fair, with carnival rides, food booths and games. Traditional food such as Hendl (roast chicken), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezen (pretzel), is served in the tents...but often cheaper at stands outside. There is no charge to get into the Oktoberfest. You can walk around for free, but 82

if you want to do anything you have to pay for food and drink and the various rides and attractions. Beer and food vouchers are only available in the beer tents. A typical tent table reservation costs 24 to 38 euros (about $34-$54) per person, including a package deal of beer and chicken dinner. One litre mug of lager inside Oktoberfest costs around 8 euro. You can’t bring in your own beer, but to save money, you can certainly stash snacks in your bag. Many tents offer seats without reservations, but it is recommended to get there by 10 a.m. to snag one. If you can avoid the weekends, the weekdays can be slightly less crowded. Here’s a fun fact to keep in mind in case if you choose to wear a traditional German dirndl to your next Oktoberfest function: If you’re looking for love, tie your apron strings to the left. That means you’re single! Right side tied apron strings means married. KAYAK is the best way to search for the cheaper airline sites. Air Berlin with a stopover from LA to Dusseldorf will cost $1100 US at that time of year. Other direct service airlines include: UK Lufthansa (0345 737 747; www.lufthansa.com) and
TR AVEL British Airways (0845 773 3377; www.ba.com) Munich airport is connected to the city centre (Marienplatz) by the S-Bahn railway. If you buy a ticket from the machines on the rail platform, buy one for both the blue and the green transport zones. This will entitle you to unlimited transport all day on buses, the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn (metro underground). When you get to the city centre (about 37 minutes) pick up a handy city map from the Munich Tourist Office (Phone 00 49 89 19433) The swank Bavarian capital is the most expensive city in Germany, and prices for everything escalate even further during Oktoberfest. The Sheraton Munchen Westpark (4 stars) is usually $150 per night, but double during Oktoberfest. Even the 3 star Golden Leaf hotel charges $277 per night during the festival. Consider staying in a nearby town for cheaper hotel rates and commuting to Oktoberfest. The trains run on time (it’s a German thing) and Munich can be reached from mostnearby towns in an hour or two. Want to soak up less beer and more German culture? Try: NurembergBavaria’s second city. Erlangen- Just north of Nuremberg .Regensburg- boasts a stunning medieval centre. And just over the German border: Austria is another medieval eye-pleaser. Many tourists find that two days at the Wiesen enough dirndl time, so plan on other outings to make the most of your travel budget and experience. Auf Wiederschen!

FAITH, FAMILY AND FRIENDS. That’s how I survived breast cancer. The words no one wants to hear “you have stage 3 breast cancer” put me into shock. I felt like I was walking in a void for months after the diagnoses. I went through the motions, did everything my medical team wanted but I was just numb. I thank God for my amazing siblings who made sure that one of them was with me at all medical appointments and all of my cancer treatments and surgeries. They laughed with me, they cried with me, they loved me and supported me. It was such a long arduous journey fraught with pain and sickness but throughout the entire time I knew God was by my side, helping me through this very dark period in my life. I could feel the prayers of family and friends and was overwhelmed by their outpouring of love. It is what helped me get through the long process of becoming cancer free. I am a breast cancer survivor. I never wanted to be. I never expected to be a survivor and frankly, I wish it hadn’t happened to me. But it did and I came through it and now I’m a survivor.

California native, Kelli Berglund was born along the coast in San Luis Obispo and at a young age moved to Camarillo. She currently resides in Moorpark, which is “a town near and dear” to her heart. At a young age, Berglund loved to dance and perform in front of huge crowds. “Naturally, I had an interest in pursing acting as well since it fell in the same category as dancing and singing.” After booking a “Barbie” commercial, Berglund realized acting was “something that would soon become quite important to her.”

As if that’s not enough to keep this actress, busy, Berglund is also part of the “Audrey Hepburn CARES Team” at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. It’s an organization that deals with children who have been physically abused. The organization also helps the children battle legal issues, treats their injuries and gives them endless love and care. She adds, “These innocent, young children are fighting for their lives and I’m doing everything I can to donate my time, money, and love to prevent the cruelty these children have been put through.” Berglund believe everything happens for a reason. When asked what her life mantra was she says, “I personally believe that God has a plan for all of us. People walk in and out of our lives for a reason. Things don’t work out for a reason, and great things happen for a reason. We may not always know that reason right away, but that’s where trust deep down comes in.”

The show is a competition game show where adolescents compete in the wilderness.

When it comes to the biggest lesson she has learned, Berglund says, “Don’t lie because you will never get away with it. Also, hard work and integrity are everything.” Berglund also believes that the Disney Channel Original Movie “How To Build A Better Boy” was one of her greatest career accomplishments. The advice Berglund would give to an individual wanting to follow their dreams is “life is tough, and there are times where nothing seems to be going your way. However, when you love something so much and want to do nothing but succeed, you WILL battle those obstacles and overcome them like a champ.”

Sacramento native, Andrew Gray moved to L.A. at the age of 18 straight out of high school. He described his experience as “eye-opening”. At a very young age Gray knew he had a passion for acting and the industry. “I love the craft. It was something that gave me joy.” Gray mentioned that when he first moved to L.A. he took advantage of it and got ahead of himself. Gray got into modeling and wanted to be more experienced behind the camera and “not to be so green”. He traveled, did commercials, print ads, build his relationship and technical skills, and well being. He moved back to L.A. about five years ago after reinventing and improving himself. Now he is back into acting full-blown and added that is has “been an absolute blessing and experience.” Gray plays the red power ranger named Troy Burrows in the television series “Power Rangers.” He has been apart of the 20th and 21st season. The show broke many records. Gray added, “The collaborative effort of the cast, in my opinion, was effortless. It was a perfect match-up.” With the new rangers after the 20th anniversary, they are able to morph to every ranger in 20 years. Gray added, “We have to master everyone’s ability. The rangers have different personalities, but we have to master twenty. We enjoyed it and we all grew from that.” On set, Gray described the relationship with the cast as “very close; like peas and carrots.” There wasn’t any fighting or arguments, but lots of jokes and laughter. “Our chemistry was in alignment. Since we got to New Zealand, we hit the ground running.” Gray and his other cast mates shot 42 episodes back-to-back. Gray has been apart of many charities in the past –“Sacramento Children’s Homes,” “Los Angeles Children’s Hospital,” and homeless shelters. Currently, he travels around the country giving seminars and speeches to teach kids. He works hand and hand with their parents “helping them understand that intentions plus doing equals results in their life.”
Gray added that they don’t have to be products of their environment. Aside from that, he also works with the children at his church in Inglewood, CA called UP Church (Understanding Principles for Better Living Church). Gray mentioned, “Working with them is a blessing.” When it comes to being motivated. Gray said knowing that his job is never done motivates him. When it comes to the biggest lesson he has learned, Gray mentioned, “it isn’t trying to become anything, but maybe unbecoming everything so that you can be the person you were from the beginning… It’s about allowing opportunity in my life and allowing me to see it without being clouded or judgment with living in fear and doubt.”
“It’s my responsibility to be a leader and bring up leaders around me.”

METHOD DRESSER
Rose Abdoo Best known for her memorable roles in "Gilmore Girls" and "Parenthood," actress and funny girl Rose Abdoo chats with Thrifty Hunter about her penchant for reading fortunes, thrift shop treasure hunting, and her biggest inspiration… her mom. By Robin Tolkan-Doyle When did you realize you wanted to be an actress? I didn't realize I wanted to be an actress, but looking back on my childhood, I was always playing characters. My mom would give great dinner parties and I'd put on my gypsy costume from Halloween with my mom's jewelry, pull the guests out of the living room one by one, and read their fortunes at this little table we had in our room. I'd also put on my angel wings from the Christmas pageant and pretend I was the "snack fairy" for my family. I'd grab a shawl and cane and imitate older relatives. Other times, I played with two small plastic mice and other small animals. I'd make clothes for them and voice all the characters and act out stories just for myself…stories that were far more complicated than any "Knot’s Landing" or "Dallas" nighttime soap opera. But, I just never thought I'd do any type of acting outside my home. Looking back, how do you feel life prepared you to tackle the life of an actor, always going on auditions? I performed in Michigan in all the Southfield High school plays and in 25 shows at Michigan State. I found that early on, I loved putting on mini shows for the small group of people holding the auditions. I guess those audition rooms were the next step from acting in my childhood home. I've been very fortunate to have teachers along the way that made me feel comfortable to perform. I'd try to figure out a way in the audition to do a role that, to me, was different than the way other people were going to do it. Working at Second City in Chicago was great practice. I was lucky I toured the country with talented actors like Stephen Colbert and Chris Farley. We'd get to different cities around the US and try to absorb some local culture to improvise in the show each night. What keeps you motivated to continually take on auditions? I enjoy collaborating with actors, directors and writers to help bring a story to life. But I love the first step in that process, which is the audition because I get to do it all by myself.
94
FA L L 2 0 1 4 / /
F E AT U R E
I get to choose my own interpretation and especially my outfit. I'm very specific about what a character would and wouldn't wear. I choose jewelry and accessories for the character I'm creating. Sometimes I don't fall in love with the character or script so I make the audition process fun by finding stores near where I have to go in Los Angeles to the audition! I can go look around a thrift store or Ross, Marshalls or TJMaxx after my audition to find the perfect piece for the next lady I may need to play! I'm very lucky to three closets my house. One is my office, which I converted into a closet. I also have a closet in my bedroom for eveningwear. Then have a hall closet just for audition clothing. I have tagged the hangers with the names of the shows I've either worn the outfits in or shows I've auditioned for. It makes me happy to look at my clothing library. I have some favorites and pieces I've inherited from my mom that I'll never get rid of, but I also make sure I donate large bags of clothing every season. I try to do the "one new item in, one old item out" rule! I also love to have matching hangers. It's so much easier to find everything. Did I just turn a question about auditioning into what I love about shopping and closets? You are the ultimate “Thrifty Hunter” shopper. What is your technique for sorting through thrift stores and always coming out with gems? My mother is an incredible seamstress. She’s devoted to fashion magazines and I’ve inherited that obsession. So my eye goes right to patterns and colors I’ve seen in magazines. I truly believe years of accompanying her to fabric stores has made me keenly aware of good prints and quality material. I can go to a giant rack of jackets and pull the best quality one in very little time.
F E AT U R E What is your one biggest "thrifty" find that you're proud of? There are so many. I once fell in love with a pair of earrings in a Dolce & Gabbana magazine ad. The next week I found the matching necklace at a flea market in Glendale for $4! I just wore it this week to play an Italian mama in a film I did in Kansas City. Years ago I was going to buy a Proenza Schouler jacket when they did their collaboration with Target and then I forgot. The next month I found it new with tags at a thrift store for $3. I once found a brand new Christian Dior trench coat for $2. I don't just love designer labels though. I like anything made with interesting material. Lately, I seem to find great hand knit sweaters that people have given away. Sometimes I personify inanimate objects and feel the hours of work that went into making a piece of clothing that is just sitting there unloved, so I want to give it a good home! I'll often spend more on dry cleaning and alterations than on the original item.
My mom was born in Dominican Republic. She’s very funny and I imitate her all the time. She came to my one-person show and told people "I didn't realize I had an accent until I heard her talk like me" I've often been cast playing a version of my mother. I play the seamstress in "My Best Friends Wedding" because my mom is an artist and wedding gown seamstress. The director of that movie even asked if my mom would like to come audition for it. I was the interior decorator on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" playing a character based on my mom. Most often, I’m recognized by kids for my role in the Disney channel show, "That's So Raven," where I played a Spanish teacher loosely based on my mom.
What do Rose Abdoo fans have to look forward to in the next year? I play a therapist in this new season of “Castle” (I wore a sweater to that What do you like learning when reading about other actors in magazines? audition that I wore to book two other therapist roles! ) I’m a doctor in I like to know about their family and what they like to do when they're not the fifth episode of this season’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” I’m in a feature film that is out now called “Yellow Day.” I’m in the new film “Cake” with Jenacting. Or if they have a pet or their favorite food. What a good question! So nifer Aniston, I have a small role (and an odd khaki outfit) in the new someone reading about me would read that: I like to go to flea markets, I film “Welcome to Me” starring Kristen Wiig. I just filmed a movie in don't have children (when I was young all my dolls were either my nieces or Kansas City called “Trust Fund” as an Italian mama. I’m very excited to they had jobs and worked for me), I have no pets, but I do have a husband be in a few episodes of the “The Comeback” on HBO with Lisa Kudrow, that makes me laugh every day. I love figs and olives! which will start in November. And, I hope to do my solo show in Chicago next year in January at the Filet of Solo one-person show festival. Any family members that inspire the characters that you’ve created in your career?

WORLD -CLASS TRIATHLETE
The Indestructible Karen Newman By Sherisse’ D Woodley
Dream a big dream and don’t give up. There will be so many stumbling blocks and each block will build you up.” -Karen Newman Karen Newman is a world record-breaking triathlete, and the survivor of two life threatening diseases. She has battled with anorexia and breast cancer. “God saved me,” she offers. “He miraculously saved me from anorexia. I was 78 pounds and knocking on death’s door. It is a miracle that I am here.” Newman had advanced aggressive cancer and is now cancer free. “God brought me through both of these disease so that I could give back to the world and help other like I never could without the experience. I am here as a living example that all things are possible. The fact that I am alive is amazing enough, but God has more. Newman is a mother, wife, friend, daughter, and the list can go on, but most of all she is a fighter. In our interview, she goes on to talk about her life journey with over coming breast cancer and anorexia. She’s a mother of three beautiful boys and a wife to the most supportive husband. She’s been honored with the 2013 Courage Award from the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance. When asked how did it feel to be honored with the award Karen says, “It was such a great thrill. I felt really blessed and also felt accepted on behalf of everybody….We all have a deep courage that we are unaware with a big trial.” Newman is also the American Cancer Society’s 2010 Determination Champion and spoke a motivating message to the quest. She stressed to the guests how important it was for them to dream really big dreams, not to give up, and that our mind is powerful and the words we speak to others and ourselves. She said, “We can either build each other up or down. The most important words are the ones we speak to ourselves. Dream a big dream.” While listening to Newman share her story over the phone, she started to tell me about a time when she broke down in tears after one particular chemotherapy while she was driving on a country road. She said it was the first time she cried, and in that moment, she heard a message from God. She said He told her, “I will take you through the valley and I will put you on a mountain and you will be singing.” Four year later at the Auckland New Zealand Triathlon Age Group World Championships, she came in second in the world, and was the top American out of all the participants. She described it as a miracle and one of the greatest moments in her life.

Newman had went to the tent at the race to get her jacket and when she entered, she heard the song “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groben. Newman said she fell to her knees and raised her hands in the air and thanked Jesus. Newman said, “I knew in that moment that THIS was THE long ago promise, that I would be on a mountain. My mountain was a podium, and that night I was indeed singing and the world was singing with me. The number one women from Australia pulled me up onto the podium and said you deserve this too. I am amazed at your story, and together we all sang.” Newman also lectures all over the world inspiring individuals to dream the big dreams and to never give up. She said, “Sometimes we have to force our friends to take help. When we allow people to help you they’re blessing them…It’s a beautiful circle to allow other to help us.” Some of the advice Newman gives to people battling with life0threatenign diseases is to follow your gut. “Don’t listen to the noise. Don’t be afraid to get more opinions. Knowledge is power, and pray.” Newman find humor in things that aren’t she said her family and friends really helped her get through the hard days. She told the story about one day she got done with chemo and she was starting to lose her hair and someone came up to her and said I love your haircut. Newman is a perfect example to those battling with disease. You can either sit at home or feel sorry for yourself or you can find humor in every aspect of your life like she did. Newman believes that the greatest trials are the greatest opportunities. With being diagnosed with advanced aggressive stage-3 breast cancer and finishing the world triathlon championship after receiving her 4th chemotherapy, she talked about never giving death a chance. “I didn’t want my boys to grow up without a mother…God loves us all. Our trials are our opportunities to transform us, and in the end there will be blessings.” Newman and her whole family participate in races and charitable events together. They recently raced in a Connecticut 5K to help raise money for cancer for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. When asked what advice she would give to individuals wanting to follow their dreams, Newman said, “We need to pour love in the world. I receive so much love and I want to let it out.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman’s death is about 1 in 36 (about 3%). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment. At this time there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. (This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.) If you’re concerned about breast cancer, you may be wondering if there are steps you can take toward breast cancer prevention. Some risk factors, such as family history, can’t be changed. However, there are lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk. Studies have shown lifestyle changes have decrease breast cancer risk even in high-risk women. The following are some steps that could possibly lower your risk: Limit alcohol The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol, including beer, wine or liquor — limit yourself to no more than one drink a day. Don’t smoke Accumulating evidence suggests a link between smoking and breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women. In addition, not smoking is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Control your weight Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is especially true if obesity occurs later in life, particularly after menopause.
Be physically active Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a week . Breast-feed Breast-feeding may play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breast-feed, the greater the protective effect. Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy Combination hormone therapy for more than three to five years increases the risk of breast cancer. If you’re taking hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, ask your doctor about other options. You may be able to manage your symptoms with nonhormonal therapies, such as physical activity. If you decide that the benefits of short-term hormone therapy outweigh the risks, use the lowest dose that works for you. Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution Medical-imaging methods, such as computerized tomography, use high doses of radiation, which have been linked with breast cancer risk. Reduce your exposure by having such tests only when absolutely necessary. While more studies are needed, some research suggests a link between breast cancer and exposure to the chemicals found in some workplaces, gasoline fumes and vehicle exhaust. Nine Breast Cancer Research Success Stories Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers, with 1 in 8 women in the US developing the disease in their lifetime. However, largely due to research discoveries, breast cancer in women declined in the early 2000s – after increasing for years. In addition, more women who do get the disease are now surviving it.
These are the stories of nine American Cancer Society-supported pioneers in breast cancer research who laid the foundation for treatments that are saving lives today:
1950s
Stanley Cohen, PhD, discovered the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is linked to cell growth and multiple cancer types. Studies are currently under way to see if anti-EGFR drugs, such as Erbitux (cetuximab) and Tarceva (erlotinib), that are already used to treat other types of cancers might also work against breast cancer. Cohen was later awarded a Nobel Prize for his work.
1974
V. Craig Jordan, PhD, showed that tamoxifen could prevent breast cancer in rats by binding to the estrogen receptor. Tamoxifen was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating estrogen receptor positive breast cancer in 1978.
1978
Bernard Fisher, MD; Richard Love, MD; and V. Craig Jordan, PhD, developed and carried out the first trial of tamoxifen to prevent recurrence in breast cancer survivors.
1979
Arnold Levine, MD, discovered the p53 protein, which was later shown to be a tumor suppressor gene, mutated in more than half of all cancers, including breast cancer.
1988
Dennis Slamon, MD, discovered that the her2/neu growth factor receptor is overexpressed in 15% to 30% of breast cancers, and is an unfavorable prognostic feature. He went on to develop Herceptin (trastuzumab), which is used today to treat thousands of women with breast cancer.
1998
Bernard Fisher, MD, reported that tamoxifen reduces the incidence of breast cancer by 49% in high-risk women.
2001
Walt Disney-American Cancer Society Research Professor for Breast Cancer Mary-Claire King, PhD, along with Bernard Fischer, MD, reported that tamoxifen prevents recurrence of breast cancer in BRCA2 but not BRCA1 patients.
2007
Vanessa Sheppard, developed the Sisters Informing Sisters intervention for African American women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer in an effort to reduce treatment disparities in this population.
2010
Ryan Jensen, PhD, and Stephen Kowalczykowski, PhD, successfully purified the BRCA2 protein – an accomplishment that eluded other investigators for more than 15 years. This triumph will allow scientists to better understand how the BRCA2 protein functions, laying the groundwork for new breast cancer therapies. I H A D I T, I F O U G H T I T, A N D I S U RV I V E D I T
Well I guess you could say I’m a second-generation breast cancer survivor. Both my mother and her sister were diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, my aunt lost her battle with cancer. I stood by my mother’s side hand and hand while she went through her storm; she never complained, she was strong and courageous, never loosing faith. From that point on, I strived to be just like her, and on June 19, 2012 at a routine doctor’s appointment, I was told those dreaded three little words: YOU HAVE CANCER. For a brief second, time stood still for me and all I could think was, I’m going to die. Needless to say, in the beginning I was nothing like my mother. I wasn’t strong or courageous. I refused to believe this was happening to me. I went home, shut the door, climbed into bed and there I stayed for five days trying to take it all in, reflecting on how gracefully my mother went through this and the “words this to shall pass” came to me. I got up and the next day, I went in for my first set of treatments. The hardest thing I ever had to do outside of losing my mother. On July 29, 2014, I had a double mastectomy and I am now cancer free. It was meant for me to be the one standing side by side with my mother. I learned a lot from her; she was my mentor, my hero, and the wind beneath my wings. I am forever grateful for her and God’s unconditional love. I had it, I fought it, and I survived it.

W A L K I N G B Y FA I T H In July 2008 my life changed forever. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 37. I was young and had three young boys that were 10, 8 and 4 years old. I had gone for my yearly exam when the doctor didn’t like what she felt in my right breast. I had a mammogram and then, a needle biopsy. I returned for the results by myself. The thought never crossed my mind that I had breast cancer. The surgeon was shocked that I didn’t break down in his office. I knew I served an awesome God that could heal me. I told the surgeon my faith in God would get me through. For without faith it is impossible to please Him. After the diagnosis, I had a lumpectomy and the removal of a few lymph nodes. Two of the lymph nodes came back positive for cancer. The course of treatment was to have eight rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. Through all this bad news, I continued to trust that God would never let me go. Not too many people were told about my situation because I didn’t want to surround myself with negativity. During this dark time, I turned to the only sure thing in my life, Jesus Christ, my Lord and savior. I relied on my immediate family and my close church friends to lift me up in prayer. I truly felt God’s embrace. The chemo started in September 2008. My mom would go with me to every session and we would pray over the meds that were about to be infused into my body. We asked the Lord that the chemo would target exactly what it was suppose to do nothing more, nothing less. That it would attack only the cells it was suppose to, leave the healthy cells alone and not cause all the side effects that the nurses explain could happen. Two weeks into the chemotherapy, my hair began to fall out. This was extremely difficult for me. I broke down a few times but my husband was there to comfort me. I was told I was a very fashionable chemo patient with my Coach scarves and full make-up; I had to make a fashion statement. I was determined to beat this. My hair loss was the only side effect that I experienced. I never had any nausea or tiredness throughout the ordeal. I would get chemo in the morning and by the afternoon I was picking up my boys from school. I believe all the prayers brought me through. Two years after the initial diagnosis, I was told that there was a spot on my right breast in the same location. A needle aspiration biopsy of the area was done. Of course, I went for the results alone AGAIN. The cancer had reoccurred.
Surprisingly, the news didn’t effect me in a bad way. I knew my God had something for me and it wasn’t cancer. My local oncologist sent me to MD Anderson because of its medical advancements. My new doctors in Houston recommended a mastectomy with reconstruction. On January 7, 2011, I went under the knife again but this time to remove my right breast and reconstruct it with my stomach tissue. The doctor said I would technically be having a tummy tuck by doing this. My parents, husband and sister-in-law waited patiently for the almost eight hour surgery to be completed. I stayed in the hospital one week. The pain I experienced from the TRAM flap procedure was horrible; how any woman would have a tummy tuck for vanity is beyond me. I never lost sight that God was holding my hand as I went through this journey. Some women might have thrown in the towel, but I was determined to fight and survive this disease. I am blessed with a wonderful husband, three gorgeous boys, an awesome family and true friends that support me in every way possible My advice to other women that are going through cancer is to never let fear come into their life. F.E.A.R. stands for false, evidence, appearing, real. You need to have positive thoughts and words coming out of your mouth. To paraphrase Galatians 3:13, we are redeemed from the curse of the law because He became the curse for us and cancer is a curse. I stand by my faith that God will complete the healing that He started in my body. Wherever my journey takes me, I trust that God will bring me through. Through Him all things are possible! **NKJV Scriptures references: Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Galatians 3:13 - Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”) Matthew 19:26 - But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

LET TER FROM — THE PUBLISHER
I hope you enjoyed our “Breast Cancer Awareness” issue. Beyond the fashion and many thrifty tips in our fall issue, were amazing stories of beautiful women who were courgeous enough to share their journey as a Breast Cancer survivor. These stories were here to remind us of the progress we’re making together to save lives and create a world with less breast cancer. Among these courgeous women is my mother, Peggy Stewart who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2005. I can remember like it was yesterday, but glory to be GOD nine years later she is still here and CANCER FREE. My mother is what I call my “Rock”. Everytime I think of her, she gives me hope that I to can endure any obstacle that comes my way. On Sunday, October 28, 2014, I walked for “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” in honor of this wonderful woman. It was such an amazing experience. “EVERY DAY WE ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE!” The American Cancer Society has been saving lives for more than a century. Today, they are here helping save more than 400 lives a day that will have otherwise been lost to cancer. Every Fall issue sold of Thrifty Hunter Magazine, We (Thrifty Hunter) will be donating the proceeds to the The American Cancer Society, “Making Strides Aganist Breast Cancer.” We are excited about being a part in helping women with breast cancer today and working tirelessly to find cures to end the disease tomorrow. To our readers: I want to thank you all so much for your support. Thrifty Hunter magazine wouldn’t be where is it without you. I invite you to take this journey and grow with us. I know God has nothing, but great things in store and no matter where my life goes, my mind, my heart, and soul will always stay the same. Humble, grateful, and thankful! Always remember with God ALL things are POSSIBLE. Yours Truly, Gabrielle Lewis
