E T S Y S P O T L I G H T | Jayblue Handmade

Jayblue Handmade started as a creative outlet, but has slowly become my life’s passion. My mother taught me how to crochet when I was very young and it has been one of my favorite hobbies since. When I started Jayblue I was mostly looking for a way to get rid of my excess crochet buildup. Once I got started however, I began to realize my love of sharing my creations with the world around me. There is something so vulnerable about the experience, and yet so rewarding. I am constantly inspired by new things and new people within my life, Jayblue is ever changing and is a testament to that. I am so truly grateful to be able to do what I love each day. Every item is handmade, piece by piece in southern California. One of my favorite aspects to the creative process within knitting and crocheting is coming up with my own patterns. Everything you see within my gallery can not be seen identically anywhere else, which is part of what makes buying handmade such a special experience. Most recently the newest additions to my collection include a wide selection of different spring and summer crochets ranging from beach and festival pieces to everyday wear. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Like Jayblue Handmade on Facebook or follow @ jaybluehandmade on Instagram to see a more day to day in depth look of my process. www.jaybluehandmade.com

LET TER FROM — THE EDITOR

I met Thrifty Hunter's Gabrielle Lewis a year and a half ago when she contacted me about borrowing some dresses from a client I represented for her new online magazine. As a fashion publicist, I am used to being contacted by hundreds of editors, fashion stylists and bloggers looking to collaborate with the brands I represent. Some have been good fits, others not so much. What struck me about Gabrielle's initial email was the sincerity and passion that came through when she described the vision she had for Thrifty Hunter. On February 15, 2013, she wrote: "I have created this magazine to help people learn how they can lead a full, vibrant and rich life within their budget, whether it's $5 or $500. After seeing a couple issues of Thrifty Hunter, I was impressed with what she was able to pull together until I got to know her better...Gabrielle is one of the most inspiring and tenacious women I know. What she has been able to accomplish in the last year and half with this publication has taken other publishing companies years to achieve. So once we got to know each other better (and she learned of my editorial background), the offer to take the helm of Thrifty Hunter as the editor in chief was something I was incredibly honored by. I dove into this summer issue once it had already been planned out and have done my best to make sure the stories are not only interesting, but contribute to the bigger picture that Gabrielle has for Thrifty Hunter...to be wise and creative with money and other resources, be it with fashion, food or travel. On page 70, find out how LAcouple Candice and Anthony Branch created the wedding of their dreams on a budget you'd never believe was possible. On page 86, learn how social entrepreneur and fair trade activist Rahama Wright created Shea Yeleen, an all-natural, budget-conscious beauty brand that actually helps hundreds of women earn a living in Africa. And on page 50, please check out the Q&A profile on Hollywood Beauty Expert and funny lady Kym Douglas. I've known Kym for a few years now and am a true fan of her down-to-earth approach for teaching her audiences how to live a "blissful" life within your means, and not to take yourself too seriously. From a young age, Kym always knew she wanted to work in the journalism world. I, too, have always been drawn to the media. Between editorial positions at national publications to running Charmed PR, a lifestyle public relations firm, I eat, breath and sleep the media. With so many distorted and wasteful stories and images constantly being pumped out into the world, I am privileged to bring you a publication that focuses on the goodness of “thrifty” thinking. Warmly, Robin Tolkan-Doyle

FROM THE POOL TO THE PARTY, FROM THE RESORT TO THE RESTAURANT By Nicole Voller t

RH Creation features vibrant colors in flattering silhouettes that flow to the beat of your resort lifestyle. This fresh and dramatic pool and beach clothing line was designed by Richard Henderson, a Belize native. His resort wear is inspired by his love for the Caribbean climate, colors, and state of mind. His swimsuit cover-ups are so luxurious that each piece can easily transition “from the pool to the party or the resort to the restaurant,” explains Henderson. RH Creation won Fashion Week San Diego last year. As a friend of Richard Henderson, I am continually impressed by his ability to design new silhouettes that are so flattering for the feminine figure. Henderson’s taste level is evident in his designs and he has the ability to execute each piece with exotic elegance. RH Creation designs have also been described as “sexy sophistication with Caribbean flare.” These gorgeously chic, cover ups can be purchased at Harrah’s Casino Boutiques and the RH Creation online eBay store. COVER STORY

KYM DOUGLAS That Girl By Robin Tolkan-Doyle Kym Douglas, the ever-popular Hollywood beauty guru and “Blissologist,” is a regular fan favorite on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and the Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family. Aside from climbing into a noodlefilled bathtub and pouring maple syrup on her hair all in the name of affordable beauty, this modern day Lucille Ball recently sat down with Thrifty Hunter to chat about how she went from her humble upbringing in Detroit to sitting atop a beauty empire that’s about to explode. How long have you been in this industry?

What was your first showbiz gig:

KD: For as long as I can remember, I have only wanted to do one thing in life and that was to be a reporter. When I was 12 years old, sitting in front of the television in our suburban Detroit home doing my homework one day, I saw a woman named Jessica Savage on the TV giving the evening news. I looked up and in an instant knew that is what I wanted to do. My mother, a homemaker, was cooking a stew through the open archway of family room to the kitchen. I starred at the screen and called out: “Mom! That is what I want to do when I grow up!” My mother lifted her head from the stew, turned to the TV, then looked me straight in the eye and paused. Very sternly, she stated, “Then you will!" From that moment on, I never thought I couldn't, and I did.

KD: The day I turned 16 years old, I got in my father’s car and drove to the local TV station, WJBK in Southfield, Michigan to ask if I could work there. I said I would do anything, including sweep the floors. They gave me an internship that same day to be a tour guide showing senior citizen groups, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops around the station. I did that until I was 18 and left for college. In the meantime, I made many connections and asked the news director if I could come work for him after I graduated college. He agreed that if I majored in journalism, earned above a 3.5 grade average and graduated, he would hire me as a night beat reporter. Four years later to the day, I graduated from college. It was a Friday. That very next Monday, I began working at WJBK as a per diem new reporter for the same news director.

SUMMER 2014 // COVER STORY

COVER STORY

You recently wrote a book Bliss Happens, “The Six-Week Plan to a Happier, Prettier, Thinner, and Richer Life.” What inspired you to write it? KD: A few years ago, I was working on a show in Los Angeles called The Doctors, which is executive-produced by Dr. Phil’s son Jay McGraw. He approached me one day and asked if I would like to write another book. I said sure! I had already written four books on beauty so I wasn't sure what else I could say on the subject, but thought it was worth a discussion. Jay told me he didn't think what I was “selling to audiences” was actually about beauty, but more about happiness. To make a long story short, I agreed and wrote the book. He came up with the title Bliss Happens, which fit like a glove and struck a cord with society. Where do you find “bliss” in your life? KD: I focus on the positive things in my life and pass that positivity onto others. I believe that this way of thinking will allow good things to come back to you again and again. You attract what you focus on and put out there. You have one of the most coveted jobs... playing with beauty products on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. I’ll never forget when you stepped into that tub of Top Ramen in that gorgeous green dress! What has been your most memorable moment so far? KD: By far, my most memorial moment was the day I went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the first time. It was supposed to be a one-time gig. I was so nervous and excited and had so much anxiety, that I started throwing up. I got myself in such a state that it really would not stop. I called the show to cancel and see if I could reschedule for another time and they said if you don't show up this time, there would never be a next time. I called a friend who knew a private nurse and she rushed to my home with a drug to help stop the vomiting that they give to chemo patients. It shows you how we can self sabotage ourselves and try to avoid our purpose and successes…even if we have worked for them our whole lives. How do you juggle that job and hosting The Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family? Not to mention, you’re also married to actor Jerry Douglas and a mom to a 16-year-old! What are your secrets to staying so calm and cool?

COVER STORY

KD: Well, here is the secret: I don't have balance in my life and no one I know has it either. It’s a juggling act every day and balance is an illusion. I am calm at times because I am doing what I always wanted to do. I am happy and I am grateful everyday. I am also a realist and I am aware that this will not last so I enjoy it while I have and it and I will be ready to move on when I don't have it. Thrifty Hunter's message is all about living your life to the fullest without sacrificing your bank account. What "thrifty" tips of your own could share with our readers? KD: My whole TV persona came from the desire to look my best for as long as I can and not have to spend a ton of money doing it. I started whipping up beauty connections straight out of my fridge, my kitchen pantry and my bathroom vanity. While my Beverly Hills’ friends were heading to Barney's to purchase a 4 oz. miracle cream for $150, I was putting an egg white mask on my face for 15 minutes to achieve the same firming and tightening effect for pennies! When other girlfriends were waiting in line at the newest high-priced hair salon to receive that deep conditioning silky smooth Brazilian hair treatment, I was mashing avocados, coconut oil and egg yokes into a thick paste to coat my hair for less than $5. Beauty and looking good does not have to be expensive. Living a beautiful life can be affordable. I find I look my very best when I am happy and having fun. That is what I try to do every single day. Otherwise, what's the point?

Photographer Debbie Walton

The Kym Douglas-empire is blowing up! You're on two shows, in development for a third, you have your book, Bliss Happens, and a line of beauty products coming out! What can you tell us about the “Beauty Bib” and your soon-to-launch fragrance line? KD: I take nothing for granted and I work 24/7. The Beauty Bib, which I developed and designed along with my business partner Julee Ireland, just launched this year to rave reviews and stellar sales. (When applying your cosmetics, it’s a cute bib that keeps your makeup off your clothes and on your face!) I was lucky enough to have Ellen DeGeneres wear it when she was having her make up done to host the Oscars. She also did a TV segment on her show with me and it literally "sold out" in less than three days. Later this month, Julee and I are launching the Baby Beauty Bib, and my fragrance line will hit stores by Christmas 2014. We are really excited about it. The Kym Douglas fragrance line has a very unique ingredient that just about every woman I know will want to have…! I feel very fortunate and I want to share that blissful feeling with the rest of the world because when the water rises, all boats float…and smell good! Anita Patrickson

While fashion and beauty come very easy to Patrickson, the internationally known stylist admits she literally fell into this career. “I was seeking an internship at CNN and happened to be in LA writing an article for a London magazine,” she says. “My father encouraged me to find a paying job instead so I answered an ad on Craig’s List.” That ad was placed by the well-known stylist and fashion designer Mary Alice Haney. After working for Haney for a year, Patrickson met Kelly Atterton, the west coast editor of Allure magazine, who offered her a job at the LA bureau. One thing led to another and before Patrickson knew it, she was helping style celebrities such as Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Katherine Heigl, to name a few. These days, Patrickson is back to traveling the world, this time as a well-established stylist of her own right. She did take time out of her busy schedule to share some of her favorite fashion and beauty finds that always travel the world with her.

ASHIEDA GLOW with on e n ec tar d rin k a d ay! By Kristina Goldberg

Founder and CEO, Sarah Ehrlich began her career in beauty at a young age. Growing up, her mother owned beauty salons and inspired Sarah to get her facial license at 18 years old. When Ehrlich met her husband, an art dealer, she traveled the world with his business, allowing her to experience what other countries were doing in skin care. Through her journeys, Ehrlich discovered amazing beauty secrets, which eventually inspired her to create the line she has today, Ashieda, a revolutionary skincare line, featuring one-of-a-kind anti-aging, hydration and skin renewal properties. Ashieda products have endured many indepth clinical studies and contain proven formulas that help allow one’s skin to look more youthful and radiant than ever before. The basis of Ashieda products is collagen, one of the most essential elements for skin renewal and repair.

Ashieda’s Skin Renewal Mask, made from all natural vegetable fibers, is clinically proven to shrink pores, reduce wrinkles, improve skins texture and even skin tone in just one hour. It is a great way to refresh your skin after a long day at the beach. This relaxing mask also helps with sun and environmental damage. Since sun exposure breaks down our collagen, this moist mask helps infuse five peptides into one’s skin to stimulate collagen regeneration, improve skin’s moisture and supplement one’s natural collagen. Use once a week for best results. Wrinkles shrink by 8% with one use and for those battling acne, it will decrease acne bacteria by 10%. Visit Ashieda.com for more clinical studies; one mask for $9.99 or a box of four for $34.99.

Another unique find from Ashieda is their Cleansing Sponge. Made from the Konjac root, which Sarah discovered while in Korea, this little sponge has a soft texture and helps cleanse, pores, eliminate blackheads, dirt and oil. The sponge also gently exfoliates with out using micro beads, which can damage your skin as well as pollute the environment. This is perfect for sensitive or acne prone skin; $9 for two months.

50s

When Ehrich isn’t formulating new products for Ashieda, she is pursuing her other passion as a philanthropist, helping women and children in developing countries. She helped start Help For Orphans International, a nonprofit organization that helps provide schools and homes for orphaned children in underdeveloped countries, as well as a cosmetology school for underprivileged women in Honduras where they can earn their license and start working to earn a living and provide for their families. Thrifty Hunter is committed to highlighting individuals who make a positive difference in our world and applaud Sarah on all her of her endeavors. To learn more, visit www.Ashieda.com and Helpfororphans.org Ashieda skincare Beauty Nectar Collagen Drink is truly beauty in a bottle. One small bottle of this tiny delicious sweet nectar drink a day plumps the skin, providing a healthy glow, and with continued use, it will also help reduce wrinkles; $4 per bottle. FOOD

FLIRTING WITH REAL FOOD THIS SUMMER By Jennifer Leff MS, CPT

Do you ever find yourself overeating at breakfast, lunch or dinner because you are not satisfied? Or have you ever noticed that the meal that you are eating does not taste like you remember even though it was one of your favorites? Guess what? It is not your imagination. These days, many of the foods we eat don’t taste like we remember them because they’re not the same! Wondering what is happening to our food? There is an invasion of confusing additives and chemicals that are affecting what and how much we eat. Our bodies are designed to request “real food” that tastes real, not chemically processed ingredients. Only real food in its natural form can satisfy our nutritional needs that are required to allow our body to restore and prepare for the demands of life. It is time we take charge of what we are bringing into our homes and feeding our families. The human body is not designed to operate at optimal capacity without proper fuel. Especially, in this fast paced world our bodies cannot rely on foods made in a lab. Here is the scoop for kicking the chemically processed foods to the curb and welcoming with open arms meals that our bodies yearn for and our taste buds crave without busting your wallet. Summer is the perfect time to incorporate this healthy way of eating into your lifestyle. There is an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available now. 1. Know your options on where you can purchase Real Foods easily and the different terms that define them. Locally sourced or fresh from your local farmers are wholesome foods that are grown as close as possible to your community. This offers the most nutritious ingredients via your local supermarkets. They are readily available to bring home. Buying local, in-season produce offers the best prices, allows you to support your local agricultural community, and is a fantastic way to protect your health. This is a perfect solution when you do not have a farmer’s market nearby and want the best tasting nourishing foods for your family.

FOOD

Farm to table is a term that offers the luxury of knowing the source of the foods you are consuming. There are “farm to table” restaurants popping up everywhere. The “farm to table” theory is a movement that links the production of food harvesting, storage, processing, packaging and sales-to consumption. This movement believes in going back to basics and enjoying fresh foods in their natural form. 2. It is easy to commit to replacing prepackaged processed foods, fast food and saturated fats with healthy meals that will get you and your family feeling your best this summer and will help your money stay in your wallet. Read your labels and know what you are buying. If you can’t pronounce it, denounce it. For example, watch for hidden sodium, smaller serving sizes, saturated fats, chemicals, preservatives, sugars, and additives. Avoid sodas and sugary drinks that are high in calories and chemicals. Choose water, tea, or homemade juicing for your beverages. Many of these foods are filled with empty calories and can leave the body with an unfulfilled feeling, which can cause one to over eat and feel terrible. Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for optimal nutrition that are grilled, broiled or steamed rather than fried. Eating foods in their natural form not only can help the scale go down but also aids in digestion and increases overall energy. In addition, adding whole grains and lean proteins are a healthy alternative to processed foods that leave many feeling unsatisfied. A healthy balanced diet has the potential to affect every aspect of our being: body, mind and spirit. 3. Eat fresh and get in tune with what you are hungry for. By slowing down and really listening to what the body needs, you can fuel your body with wholesome foods while appreciating them. Get ready to relax and indulge with summer foods while cleaning up your diet so you can feel comfortable in your skin and feel your best. Intuitive eating is a philosophy that honorsyour hunger and rejects dieting principals. Only you know what is best for your body. It is more than adding fruits and vegetables but revamping how and

FOOD what you are eating by trusting your own instincts of what your body needs. There is no magic pill or fad diet. Looking within does not count calories but instead instills trust in one’s self to have the knowledge of good quality, healthy foods your body needs. Life is what you make of it. Give yourself permission to enjoy yourself this summer with friends and family and focus on them not what you should or should not be eating at your neighbor’s BBQ. We are not meant to be perfect beings but live our lives with joy and pleasure. Everything in moderation. And if you happen to eat something processed, canned or frozen, it is okay. The focus is about your experience, not what you should or should not eat. Bon Appetite

THRIFTY TRAVEL TIPS By Robyn Flans

In the last few years we have been inundated with websites that tout cheaper travel. It’s hard to know which really have the edge. According to travel expert Peter Greenberg, the two most competitive and painless sites for flights are Orbitz and Expedia, with Travelocity being another one. If you are flexible with your travel times (choosing offpeak days such as midweek and avoiding holidays), you will be better off, says Greenberg. The best time to purchase tickets? Wednesdays at 1:00 a.m. This is when the airlines reload their computers with the latest lowcost fares that were announced the previous day. Greenberg also advises to not purchase tickets for a trip too early. No more than 45 days prior to your domestic flight and 60 days prior to your international flight. Don’t forget about those baggage fees, too. All airlines charge you for checking in luggage, but if you can pack wisely and carry on your luggage on board, you can save a few extra dollars. Otherwise you’re looking at an extra $10-$35 per bag.

68

SUMMER 2014 //

T R AV E L

When shopping for hotels, Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz and Cheap Tickets are also great starting points for finding affordable rooms. If you are on a strict budget, you might want to consider the new adventurous trend of house borrowing. Websites such as istopover. com, airbnb.com and couchsurfing.com are great for these budget-worthy finds. There are also hostels, most prevalent in European countries as well as bed and breakfasts, which are worth checking out on sites such as bedandbreakfast.com or bnbfinder.com. If you love to gamble, there are several travel sites available to make bids for accommodations and air travel including priceline.com and biddingtraveler. com, which budget travel blog writer Sean O’Neil suggests can be very helpful. While traveling, cutting costs on food is also a way to stretch your dollar. Lucky enough to score digs with a complimentary breakfast? Then make sure you do not oversleep (i.e., travel with an alarm clock)! That’s one less meal you have to pay for and you can grab a piece of fruit, a yogurt and a breakfast bar to slip into your purse for a snack later on.

TR AVEL Ask the Concierge or hotel desk clerk to recommend the best local hole-in-the wall restaurants instead of the pricey tourist traps. They are usually the cheapest and actually have some of the best food. Keep some non-perishable snack food in your room (since you may not have a fridge) and take a trip to a local market and have a lovely picnic in the park or a romantic dinner in your hotel room. Always keep your eyes open for coupons for local attractions and ask the hotel clerks if they know any ways to cut costs on some of those touristy things in their neighborhoods. They might just have some thrifty thoughts!

Mr. & Mrs. Branch Get Married Anyone who has planned a wedding or is in the midst of one knows the price tag can be huge. When Los Angelesbased couple Candace and Anthony Branch decided to tie the knot, they made a conscious decision to make their event as lovely and inexpensive as possible. Check out how these newlyweds celebrated their love for one another and walked down the aisle with money still in their pockets.

How did you meet?

We had always seen each other at various church functions, but never approached each other. One day I reached out to her best friend, after admiring Candice on Instagram, to see if she was single. Candice agreed to exchange phone numbers, and we went on our first date a few days after.

wHere was your first date?

Coco Laurent in downtown Los Angeles

describe your relationsHip witH one anotHer.

Friendship is the basis of our relationship; we have a lot of fun together. We definitely balance each other out. I can be more serious at times, but Anthony brings out my silly side. We also do things that best-friends do: SHOP! We love to go thrifting for clothing, shoes, and even furniture.

wHat qualities do you most appreciate, admire and love about eacH otHer?

I appreciate Candice’s heart. She has a large capacity to love and to give. I admire her discipline and her devotion to her relationship with The Lord. I love her confidence and how she handles things with class. I appreciate that Anthony takes care of me. He makes sure that I don’t have to worry about anything. I admire his work ethic. He is literally the hardest working person I know. I love his spiritual leadership and his desire to lead our family closer to Christ.

wHat made you decide to get married at tHis time?

From the beginning we knew that we had something

special. We focused our attention on building a strong foundation and our bond grew very quickly. We didn’t feel the need to have a long engagement because we were at a point in our relationship where we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.

wHat are your greatest strengtHs as a couple?

Some of our greatest strengths as a couple are our communication skills, our willingness to be selfless, our spiritual foundation, and ability to forgive.

How Have you guys bettered one anotHer?

Candice has bettered me by showing me what true love and what true friendship really means. Often times I wasn’t as confident about my skills and abilities, but she makes me feel like I literally conquer the world. Anthony has helped me to become more compassionate towards others. I have always considered myself as one who shows compassion, but Anthony has challenged me to increase my love and compassion for others. He is the most giving, kind-hearted person I know, and I now strive to match his compassion.

wHat made you decide to Have small inexpensive wedding and How did you execute tHe decision?

We agreed to have an intimate ceremony because we were on a budget. Although we have many extended family members and friends, we chose to invite our immediate family members and a few close friends. We still wanted to have a very classy, elegant wedding, and didn’t want to sacrifice quality. One thing that Anthony and I have in common is that we both know how to find quality on a budget. We researched venues that were the most cost effective and that would allow us to use outside vendors. By not going the all-inclusive route, we were able to find inexpensive vendors and even do a lot of the work ourselves. We also chose not to have a wedding party, with the exception of our flower girl. This allowed us to keep our guest list down as well, which in turn allowed us to

reduce our expenses. Not only that, but it also added to the intimacy of our wedding day. The day was all about he and I.

What

Was your favorite part of planning your Wedding?

Our favorite part of planning was that all of the planning centered on us. Every decision we made was based on what we wanted. We didn’t have to take into consideration a wedding party when making our decisions, which allowed us to choose exactly what we wanted.

What Were your most

memorable moments? For me, seeing Candice cry when we decided on the venue was the most memorable moment. Her grandfather passed away 2 years ago, and she was very close to him. Her grandfather would take the family to Lawry’s to celebrate every occasion; it was his favorite restaurant. It was only fitting that our marriage celebration be held there as well. 23-6 My most memorable moment was going dress shopping with my mother. I actually fell in love with

the first dress that I tried on. When I saw my mom tear up, I knew that it was the one.

What is your advice to couples that Want to have a nice, classy small Wedding, but aren’t sure Where to begin?

Our advice is to keep the attendance low, take advantage of your resources, and don’t be afraid to have a few DIY projects. Also remember that there is absolutely nothing wrong with having an intimate wedding, and it can be just as memorable and classy, but on a budget. MONEY

He looks like a Southern California surfer and his depth of feeling wraps you up and makes you wish you were best friends. His acting is deep, fresh and masterfully believable creating a wide contrast between his role and his persona – the sign of a great actor. He’s the only kid on “Major Crimes” (TNT) and Graham Patrick Martin loves it! Martin was cast as Rusty Beck for the final, iconic episode of “The Closer” with Kyra Sedgwick in 2012. It was to be a one and done premiere for Martin, but he caught the eye of creator James Duff as well as the hearts of viewers and was asked to join the cast of “Major Crimes” to continue the story. Martin, 22 years old, has been acting since he was 15 but this is his first dramatic role. “Everyone I work with is a veteran with 20+ years of experience. To be able to go to work every day and learn so much from these great, great actors is such a gift and I take advantage of it every day. They give me acting, career and life advice.” When asked about his role as Rusty Beck, Martin says, “I love the writing – it’s tough these days to find a teen character that isn’t a stereotypical angry teen. This role is very deep and raw and troubled. It is brilliant writing by Duff and I am lucky to perform his work.” Thoughtfully crafting his answers, Martin reveals that he is a normal guy who understands that the life of an actor is one that is constantly evolving, that he must challenge himself to continue growing in life and in his craft.

“In every aspect of art – painters, musicians, actors – we cannot ever think that we have it figured because our work will decline. Art, in general, is about continuously being inspired.”

Some of Martin’s inspiration comes from hiking in the Hollywood hills, yoga, eating healthy and playing football. Martin is from Louisiana and his family teases him about his healthy, L.A. lifestyle but shares his love of football. Growing up in New Orleans, he has been a Saints fan all his life. “I love football and so does my family. We watched the Saints play every single Sunday and even when they weren’t good, we supported them.” Martin’s loyalty runs deep. When asked if he has any advice for others on how to succeed, Martin shares, “Make sure whatever you are pursuing is something that gives you satisfaction from the inside out, not the outside in. So many people do things to be perceived a certain way or for the attention, but the most important thing I’ve realized is that whatever you do has to give you that burning excitement from the inside because then you can last through the tough times.” What’s in store for Martin’s future? “I constantly want to be growing and doing different projects that jolt my system. I was doing sit-coms for so long, I was ready to do a 360 and ‘Major Crimes’ turned my acting world around. I want to do different roles to discover different parts of myself.” We will be waiting and watching to see what Martin brings to his craft – that’s what best friends do! COVER PHOTO

: wears many hats in her life: She’s a mother, wife, entrepreneur, Challen and actress. Currently, she plays Jennifer Knight in the Nickelodeon show Big Time Rush, a role Cates says, is as educational for her as it is rewarding. “I learn a lot about being a mom from playing the character Jennifer Knight. This character will do anything to make her kids happy and help them realize their dream,” says Cates, whose children Colton and Jasper are 8 and 5 years old. “I would do the same thing for my kids.” The best part about staring in the sitcom, according to Cates? Those crazy situations the show writers dream up for her character. The more “extreme,” the better she likes it. Cates is also currently in Seth McFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In The West, which came out this May along with her actor husband Aaron McPherson and their son, Colton. Cates plays a mom, gets tilled up in a stagecoach by her husband and Liam Neeson. “It was a really cool and unexpected experience”, she says. “ Liam Neeson was amazing to work with and was great with [Colton].” McPherson is a Hollywood famed acting coach who also helped Seth in the movie A Million Ways to Die In The West. Cate’s says they help each other all the time with their lines and give each other tips: “I’m his coach and he is mine. We work off one another and trust each other in that way. He’s amazing.” When Cates is not acting, she is also part owner of her family-owned Tantara Winery in Santa Maria, CA that she grew up around. Over the last couple of years, Cates has become involved with helping her dad around the vineyard, and recently bottled her first vintage. Her wine is called Challen Winery and will be out this fall. She used Pinot Noir grapes and was guided by her father through the entire process. Now that she is older, Cates appreciates the winery more and became interested in creating something from the earth: “I liked creating something with my hands, sharing it with people and seeing their faces when they experience it.” Social causes also play a big part in Cate’s life. She credits her involvement with Darkness to Light, a sexual abuse charity and Say It 2 My Face, an anti-bullying organization, to becoming a mom.

“It is clear to me that these issues greatly affect individuals,” she says. “We’re here to spread love, joy and happiness.” “As human beings we need to not give up when the times get tough. We are in a society where people easily give up,” Cates say. “The most successful people are those who looked for an open door and when the doors were all shut, they through a window.” Cate’s advice to young individuals on following their dreams is to be persistent, and always find a way:

A St. Paul, Minnesota native, Ian Anthony Dale is known for his roles in The Hangover, Hawaii Five-0, and Murder in the First. He described St. Paul as a genuinely friendly place and believes the city shaped the person he is today. “My parents always remind me to remain humble,” Dale says. “When I was booking my first jobs in L.A., my mom would always email me to stay humble. It’s nice to know my roots are grounded in St. Paul and where I come from is a good, wholesome place.” In Hawaii Five-0, Dale plays Adam Noshimuri, son of Hiro Noshimuri, the leader of the Japanese Yakuza. In the show his father sends him to the states to get an education and to veer him from the mafia. When his father dies, Adam is forced to return home where he desperately tries to legitimize the notoriously corrupt enterprise. After a four-episode arch, the producers asked Dale to come back for a love story opposite actress Grace Park, which Dale gladly accepted. While Dale isn’t on set, he enjoys surfing, hiking, and exploring the local culture and restaurants in Los Angeles. He talked about a treacherous hike he took with a local friend, and how on this hike, all the guides encouraged him to “trust the ropes”. Certain parts of the hike had vertical climbs, which forced his friend and him to rely on the ropes that had been there for many years. “I will probably never do that again,” Dale shares. “I don’t like putting that much trust into something that is so uncertain. It was exhilarating, but frightening at the same time.” Dale’s summer drama Murder in the First came out this June. The series is a murder mystery that dissects a single case into a 10-episode season, from the commitment of the crime to the investigation and finally, with the arrest and trial. Eric Lodal & Steven Bochco created the summer drama. One of Dale’s favorite roles was as Simon Lee in the series The Event. He loved how the character was “ripe with conflict” and how he was able to be the hero at the end: “Any chance you get to play a hero character, that’s kind of a golden ticket,” he says. “I had an absolute blast. I will always think fondly of that experience.”

What influenced him to become an actor, believe it or not, was a dare his friend played on him in high school...to audition for a play. “I was terrified by the thought of it and didn’t want anything to do with it,” Dale reveals. “I took some time and evaluated it. I thought maybe if it scared me so much, I should give it a try and overcome this fear.” Even though Dale remembers trembling through the entire audition, his teacher saw something in him and gave him the role. From then on, he was hooked. As an Asian-American actor, Dale has run into many bumps in the road when attempting to kick-start his career in Hollywood. “Actors of color are always going to be faced with certain challenges that are unique to their ethnic group,” says Dale. “It’s taken a long time for the industry to evolve the way the rest of society has. Opportunities have been somewhat limited throughout my career. But I’ve been able to work and am grateful. What’s encouraging is a shift is starting to happen. I’m seeing more opportunities for Asian Americans...really good ones and not just stereotypical ones.” Other than hiking, surfing or doing anything adventurous in the outdoors, Dale has a passion for designing and building custom furniture. He recently bought his first house and has “a laundry list of projects” he wants to do. Due to his filming schedule, he hasn’t been able to spend much time on this passion of his, but he has plenty of projects that will keep him busy for the next several months. When asked what advice Ian would give to someone just starting out on their career path, he suggested to follow one’s dreams: “Work as hard as you can. There’s so much out of your control, but the one thing you can control is how hard you work and be passionate about what you do.” What kept him motivated during the beginning of his career was the belief that his hard work would ultimately pay off. When he moved out to L.A., Dale gave himself 10 years, because he knew and that success didn’t happen over night: “Slow and steady wins the race. Work hard, always remain patient, positive and hopeful. That’s the

model I live by today and hopefully it will continue to bear fruit.”

SUMMER 2014 //

From being promoted as an extra to a feature player in American Pie Presents: Naked Mile, Italia has a good amount of credits on her resume. The Canadian actress is the beauty everyone is talking about these days in ABC Family’s Chasing Life, who plays April, an ambitious journalist battling cancer. TH: How does it feel to be the lead role in a show that received full pickup order from the network before it aired? IR: It was an incredibly validating compliment. Up until that point, I wasn’t really sure how it was going because I was so involved in it. We were already so proud of the story we were telling, and when we heard that it translated so well to the network and test audiences, it started to really feel real.

TH: Tell me a little about your character April in Chasing Life? IR: April is a strong, independent, smart, and incredibly ambitious girl who is trying to become who she wants to be for the rest of her life. She’s in her early twenties, living with her mom, sister, and grandma, while working at The Boston Post and dating her co-worker. She goes through things that everyone goes through and thinks she might be starting to have it all figured out when she is diagnosed with cancer. H: In what ways can you relate to her as a person? IR: I’m pretty independent. I can also be quite stubborn. I think those might be the two most similar traits between April and I. We also look a little bit alike... TH: What have you learned or gotten out of playing an ambitious journalist who is battling with cancer in the show Chasing Life? IR: I’ve really learned to take things as they come and pick my battles. Things that we think matter because we have nothing else to worry about, if you step back and really look at them, they’re just wasting your time and energy. Surround yourself with people who matter and do what you love. Never give up. TH: How are the cast and crew like in the show Chasing Life? IR: They are amazing; some of my absolute favorite people in the entire world. TH: You were also in the Sony Pictures thriller The Remaining. Tell us a little about the film and your experience? IR: That was crazy fun. I met some great friends and had a great time in Wilmington, NC. I haven’t seen the film yet but I’m really excited to. TH: You had your big break while being an extra in the movie American Pie Presents: Naked Mile, what was going through your mind when one of the writers upgraded you from an extra to a featured player? IR: That I was lucky. I truly didn’t expect all of this to come from it. I just thought it was cool that you’d be able to actually identify me in the movie. TH: That role also was your break in the industry what opportunities and roles did gain? IR: I met the people who would change my life on that set: my boyfriend, for one, and one of my best friends who lives in my guest house.

We all still hang out with a lot of the cast. They’re my family in LA. Workwise, it opened doors for me to get amazing representation and book some of my earlier roles, whichled to the later roles, and then this current role. TH: Which role would you say is your favorite? IR: Definitely April on “Chasing Life.” TH: When did you find out your passion was to act and not pursue law school? IR: It was always my passion, I just didn’t have the guts to pick up my life and wager it on chance in LA. I was going to pursue entertainment law so that I could still be in the industry, but in a more stable, controlled part of it. TH: Was this decision hard for you? IR: Oh, absolutely. I’m not a huge risk taker, but I’m glad I took this one. TH: What influenced you to pursue acting? IR: Acting was always my pipe dream, but it wasn’t until I had a foot in the door after Betahouse that I was completely influenced to give it a real shot. TH: With a growing list of credits on your resume, what would you say was your pivotal break in your career? IR: Maggie Winnock on “Unnatural History.” TH: What other hobbies or things do you like to do on your free time? IR: I love Cardio Barre. It’s fun and fast and you forget it’s a workout until you look in the mirror. I also love having friends over to the backyard to swim, barbecue, and just hang out. TH: What advice would you give to a young individual about following their dreams? IR: No one said it would be easy, they just promised it’d be worth it. TH: What kept and keeps you motivated throughout your career? IR: My family here. The whole time I’ve been in LA hasn’t been easy. The times when I was out of money and couldn’t book work, ready to go back to school, my family out here had so much faith in me and wouldn’t let me go. I love them so much.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES HOPE AND VICTORY By Debbie Sullivan

You are the stars and the world is watching you. By your presence you send a message to every village, every city, every nation. A message of hope. A message of victory.” -Eunice Kennedy Shriver The sun catches her wispy, curly hair creating the perfect frame for her enthusiastic smile. Surrounded by her mama and sister, you are drawn to her. Saskia is a future Olympian for the Special Olympics andher father, Will Vogt, is here because of her. Vogt sits on the Board of Directors for Special Olympics Southern California and shares their story. “I grew up in a family that is charitable yet I never found my place until the birth of Saskia and I knew that she would shape my path in this world. I did a lot of searching and trying to figure out as a family what resources are available and what the future holds. As I sought a way that would allow Saskia to be positively impacted, I reached out to Special Olympics and got involved.” With the Special Olympics World Games coming in 2015, Vogt shares, “I dream of a time when Saskia is not seen as different by the world – she is just Saskia. Special Olympics is in a position of building towards hopes and dreams for those with intellectual disabilities and I am thrilled to embrace a future for my daughter and her friends where we build a legacy that is not just hopes and dreams of inclusion, but an expectation of inclusion.” People are gathered for the announcement that Studio City, California is one of the first of many Host Towns to welcome Special Olympic athletes for the 2015 World Games. Three days prior to the start of the games, Olympic delegations from around the world will experience memorable recreation, entertainment and cultural exchange in their Host Towns. The largest sports and humanitarian event anywhere in the world, the Special Olympics World Games will welcome 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing 177 countries and expects to attract 30,000 volunteers and over 500,000 spectators. The Games will be held in Los Angeles from July 25 through August 2, 2015 and will be the single biggest event in Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games.

Special Olympics Global Messenger, Dustin Plunkett, serves on the staff and does an incredible job of sharing the message around the world. He got involved with Special Olympics when a coach cared enough to ask him if he wanted to play with the team and it changed his life and his future. Plunkett shares passionately, “I grew up in a family where nobody knew how to support me – so joining Special Olympics gave me an extended family, the athletes were like my brothers and sisters and the coaches were my parents.” He goes on to say, “There are over 200 million people with intellectual disabilities and they are the most marginalized, mistreated and misunderstood people and are 2.5 times more likely to be bullied. Eunice Kennedy Shriver had a vision of addressing this issue and started Special Olympics because of her sister, Rosemary Kennedy, who had intellectual disabilities.” The President and CEO of Special Olympics World Games, Patrick McClenahan, has a daughter with cerebral palsy and says his family is vested for personal reasons. After being asked by the Shriver Family to bring the World Games back to the United States, McClenahan got to work to raise the money necessary to do just that. In other countries, the Games are supported by the government, but in the United States they are privately funded through corporate sponsorship and philanthropic gifts. “Leaders of the Los Angeles area provided us with one million dollars of initial funding and individuals like Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw; companies like AEG, Bank of America and Wells Fargo and official partners Coca Cola, Mattel, Deloitte and Kaiser Permanente have helped us grow from there. We are now a staff of 62 and will grow to 150 by next year – compared to a team of 1,200 that put on the ’84 Olympics.” McClenahan wants to encourage people to volunteer and to be spectators at the events. “The message of acceptance and inclusion resonates with everyone, not just those with intellectual disabilities.” Join this magnificent event and help change your life and that of an athlete. The Beauty in Shea Butter: B y R o b i n To l k a n - D o y l e

You are probably already familiar with the miracle properties of shea butter; that it is an extraordinarily effective moisturizer for dry skin, eliminates stretch marks, promotes cell renewal and even helps protect skin from harmful UV rays. What you may not know is the amazing story of how shea butter is actually created—by the hands of women living in Africa’s embattled regions, who labor for hours on end to produce this highly sought after ingredient for mere pennies a day. What Shea Yeleen International has set out to do is nothing short of a miracle. Not only is this social enterprise’s mission to organize and train women in the villages of Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Mali to produce high quality natural, unrefined shea butter, Shea Yeleen uses this shea butter as the main component in a decadent and high quality body care line (body balms, body butters, soaps and lip balms) that is made available for sale to the western world (i.e., Whole Foods). These sales then provide a fair wage to the women who own and work at the shea butter cooperatives in sub-Saharan Africa. With these wages, these women can pay for every day necessities their children need such as education, clothing and food… things most people take for granted.

and West Africa, shea butter is high in unsaponified fat, minerals, and vitamins A and E, which help your skin retain elasticity and antiaging cell health. While many commercial beauty products contain shea butter, very few contain unrefined shea (free of process and chemical preservatives), which is the most therapeutic and beneficial for your skin.

The mastermind behind this enterprise is social entrepreneur Rahama Wright. When Wright served two years in the Peace Corps in Africa back in 2003, she discovered the challenges shea butter producers had bringing their products to market. In Mali where Wright was stationed, she quickly found her calling and helped to create the village’s first shea butter cooperative.

Wright also figured out how to pay her shea butter cooperatives three to four times more per pound of shea butter than her competitors do, helping increase hundreds of women’s incomes by an average of 130%. Pretty impressive.

“I remember watching a woman in a Malian village cry over her baby upon learning he was gravely ill and she was unable to purchase medicine to treat him,” says Wright, whose headquarters are based in Washington D.C. “I was 23 years old and struck to my core. I began researching income-generating activities for women living in rural Africa. I identified shea butter production as a potential leading income source for women because it is a mainstream product within the international body care industry.” Stemming from the fruit of the Karite trees that grow only in central

When she returned to the US, Wright officially launched Shea Yeleen, a 501c3 that continues to accomplish her mission every day; promote sustainable economic development, empower women in rural West Africa and educate consumers in the U.S. about natural body care products and fair trade.

When it comes to the ladies behind the Shea Yeleen brand, there’s nothing Wright, who makes bi-annual site visits, wouldn’t do for them: “Hearing stories of women tell me they made enough money to send their kids to school and take care of themselves is what keeps me going. I wouldn’t change my job for anything.” Shea Yeleen products can be found at www.SheaYeleen.com and select Whole Foods stores.

PROFILE

COOKING WITH ELLAMARIE Celebrity Chef By Robin Tolkan-Doyle

Ellamarie Fortenbach is the founder of Chez Le Petit Chef, a cooking school in San Carlos CA, focusing on child chefs. Her goal is to create a culinary learning experience for children in a safe and nurturing environment through a multitude of different projects. Ellamarie, “Cooking Along with Celebrities and Their Kids” is her first cookbook which will hit the Internet shelves this October. Thrifty Hunter recently sat down with the culinary goddess and she dished about her love of teaching children about food, Brangelina and Brussels sprout soup! It’s always amazing to meet someone so passionate about helping children. What inspired you to become a kid’s celebrity chef? My grandparents had restaurants when I was growing up. We definitely are a family of foodies. I learned to appreciate cooking both at their restaurant and at home. My mother and grandparents gave me a lot of love along with the freedom to cook and create. My grandmother also taught me a great skill: to clean as you cook. I was fortunate to have a mother who loved all kinds of foods, which helped me to be open about trying different foods and also to inspire my own children. I also learned that cooking could be dangerous. As a child, we had a few fires in our own kitchen, which made a lasting impression on me. When I had my own children, I began not only teaching them how to make different foods, but also made it a rule that they were not allowed to cook without adult supervision. I later began a cooking school for kids, which my own children participated in along with their friends. It simply took off from there. I thoroughly enjoy cooking with kids... plus I am a big kid myself. It was a natural fit for me to become a chef who focuses on cooking with kids. I eventually began my cookbook project, which is geared towards families and their kids. If you could cook for and dine with anyone, who would that be? I would love to cook for Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and their kids. I think that they are a unique family that probably has a different liking of foods. It would be so interesting to learn about their different food choices and see what type of fusion dishes I would come up with. Because I promote family bonding, to have the opportunity to cook and share a meal with such an inspirational and tight knit family would be a dream come true.

What do you think is the most effective way to inspire people to cook at home? It is not about making the perfect meal: it’s about making fun memories in the kitchen. If you can share the chef’s hat with your kids, you will see how much they are interested in learning about different foods. If you have teens at home, they love to create and take the lead. I know this first hand with my kids. It should be about the bonding and having fun first: cooking second. Learn to step back and allow your kids to be your partner in the kitchen. Let them have a say. If your dish does not come out, no worries. It was still fun cooking together! Try not to worry about being perfect. You will get there as you cook together more. Enjoy experiencing the flavors of different foods, and the satisfaction that you made something together is what it is about. Maybe set a day once a week or once a month that is family day in the kitchen. Spending time with your kids is so important for their development. Family bonding never ends. I look forward to cooking meals together with my kids. I also will look forward to cooking with them in their kitchens when they are grown. What are some of your most memorable moments around the table? Growing up we had a large round table in our dining room. We were a family of 9. I remember spinning a Lazy Susan around to try all of the different foods and hearing about everyone’s day. I would say that I enjoy this also with my family. However, my favorite moments now are when my kids actually prepare the meals themselves and share with me about what inspired them about their dish and how they prepared it. Of course, enjoying their dish is an added plus. They are actually pretty darn good cooks themselves! Giving back is awesome. What was your drive and reason for donating proceeds to A World Fit For Kids? I am a huge supporter of education. I grew up in a family where most of us did not attend college. I only went for a couple of years myself. You could be the smartest person in the world and never attend college but there is

something to be said about education. The experience with teachers, professors, and that classroom experience are invaluable. How can you learn too much? Promoting kids to stay in school especially through high school is so important. If I can help a little by encouraging kids to stay in school, maybe I can get others to want to do the same. A World Fit For Kids is a wonderful organization that is sincere. They put all their heart into what they do. Kevin Sorbo has been involved for over a decade with them. It is truly in my best interest to partner with A World Fit For Kids because we share the same passion: caring about children’s public education and teaching kids how to be healthy and fit. We both want for kids to have the best opportunities to become successful and caring adults. If you could leave an encouraging word to our readers what would it be? Try not to be so serious when cooking. It should be fun! Cooking should not be stressful. Whatever is going on in your lives, know that your family needs time to bond and laugh together. What better way than at mealtime? Think back and reflect on your own childhood memories with your family in the kitchen or going out for meals. You are creating the same memories for your family. It is like anything else. The more you cook, the better you get. Involve your kids by asking what they would like to try to make. It is very important to remember to give space including for yourself. When your kids help create dishes, they are more open to trying things. Heck, my kids love my Brussels Sprout Soup. You will be amazed by how your kids will become more open to trying foods, which they may have previously called yucky just by involving them in the cooking process. Creating meals with laughter and having fun in your kitchen is what it’s about!

Tabouli Salad

LET TER FROM — THE PUBLISHER

Fashion is an expression that can go as far as your imagination. What I find so interesting about fashion is that everyone has the ability and freedom to dress how they feel and how they please, there is nothing wrong with being different. That’s why I created Thrifty Hunter magazine. I wanted something different, something that represented me. Something that stood for a good cause. The definition of “thrifty” is: “Using money and other resources carefully and not wastefully.” I want the world to understand -- no matter where one chooses to shop or how a person chooses to live life, being a frugal shopper is simply wise. Shopping thrifty has made me become more open-minded in fashion. I am more creative with my style. I use to believe you have to follow the style code and can’t step out of the box, but then I realized there is only ONE ME (and most times in thrift shopping there is only one item) so how can I be an individual if I’m following the crowd? That concept helped me understand the true essence of fashion. To our readers: I want to thank you all so much for your support. Thrifty Hunter magazine wouldn’t be where is it without you. I invite you to take this journey and grow with us. I know God has nothing, but great things in store and no matter where my life goes, my mind, my heart, and soul will always stay the same. Humble, grateful, and thankful! Always remember with God ALL things are POSSIBLE. Yours Truly, Gabrielle Lewis
