The Adventures of Tim Hood Finding the Royal Tombs of Ur

“Look, Iraq,” Tim Hood said. “Yes, this is where you will be spending part of your summer vacation,” Tim’s father replied. It was a blistering hot day in the southern part of Iraq. Tim and his father’s plane ride came to an end as they saw the surroundings of the As Samāwah, and in the distance they could see the bank of the Euphrates river. “ Look, the Euphrates river,” Tim’s father said amazed. “The Euphrates is 1,720 miles and has very little tributaries,” Tim replied in awe.

Tim got off the plane and felt the intense sunlight and heat that was nothing like England’s. “It’s a good thing I brought shorts,” Tim said already sweating. Laughing, his father took their bags and hopped into the (camo) jeep that was going to take them to the archaeologist camp site.

Tim’s dad Robert was an archeologist and he and his crew were in Iraq to explore the mysteries of the ancient city Ur. “Son, ancient Ur is where the supposed Royal Tombs of Ur are.” “It is said that the tombs are filled with riches.” “That's what we're looking for.”

When they arrived at the site Tim couldn’t believe his eyes that so many people were there. People of all kinds, white, black, asian, and middle eastern were all working together to find the Royal Tombs of Ur. The head archaeologist, Frank and his son Charles Cunningham came over to Tim and his father and introduced themselves. “Hello Robert, how was the plane ride?” Frank asked Tim’s dad in a very mannerly voice. “Just swell,” Robert replied clearly impressed of what he saw. Tim tugged at his dad’s shirt and said, “ Dad, can I explore the grounds?” Charlie can come too if he wants.” “Yes,” Tim’s dad said, “but just don’t go too far.”

So off Tim went with Charles, excited to get out of that conversation. Charlie and Tim explored all of the camp’s grounds. When they had seen all of the camp they started to head back. Suddenly out of the corner of Tim’s eye he saw some strange rubble just outside of the site. “Look!” Tim said to Charlie. “There!”

Charlie saw the strange rubble. Out of curiosity, they ventured out of the grounds and followed the strange rock formation. Without realizing it Tim and Charlie found themselves traveling farther and farther from the campsite. Abruptly the strange rock shaped debris vanished and an opening appeared in front of Charlie and Tim. “Whoa, what is it?” Tim asked Charlie with fascination. “I don’t know,” Charlie said, “ but let’s go in and see.”

Tim and Charlie headed into the tunnel, and started to explore the mysterious passageway. Luckily the tunnel was dimly lit. Tim and Charlie looked around the tunnel and saw strange artifacts such as famous mosaics from the ancient citystate Ur. There were also strange looking combs, jewelry, precious gems and stones, clay pots, cuneiform tablets, weapons, amulets, and necklaces. Tim said, “The Queen’s Tomb was known to have gold necklaces and gold amulets in their tombs.” “Maybe this is the Queen’s Tomb!” “We have to get back and tell our dads,” Charlie said.

Running out of the tunnel they rushed back to the campsite. “Dad, Mr.Hood, we found something, and we think it’s the Queen’s Tomb!” Charlie and Tim screamed. “ What? You found, what?” Mr. Hood said questionly, but excited. “I don’t know, but it was filled with gold, come on,” Tim replied.

Following Tims lead, Mr.Hood looked at the strange rubble, and then followed Tim and Charlie to the thought to be tomb. After looking inside the strange opening Mr. Hood hollered obviously thrilled, “It’s a tomb!” “You and Charlie found one of seventeen Royal Tombs of Ur, and I think you guys are right, it’s probably the Queen’s Tomb!”

After the discovery, both dads told the archaeologist's to come over to where they found the tomb. Once all the gear was in place, Robert, Frank, and the rest of the archaeologists started taking the artifacts out of the tomb. After thirty days of digging and excavating, the archeologists found all seventeen Royal Tombs of Ur, and one was indeed the Queen’s Tomb. During that time, Charlie and Tim became very close friends. When all the artifacts had been excavated and determined to be valuable, Robert and Frank gave the artifacts to various museums and in return were rewarded with fifteen million pounds. After all of the archaeologist had been paid their share, Tim and his father flew back to England, rich with wealth and happiness.

Back in school, Tim told his fifth grade class about exploring and finding the Royal Tombs of Ur over his summer vacation. They asked him questions, and some didn’t believe him. To prove that Tim actually found the Royal Tombs of Ur, he brought in the newspaper with the picture and article about him, his dad, and the rest of the archaeologists finding the Royal Tombs of Ur. After that, Tim was one the most popular kid in the fifth grade. But even though he had many friends, Charlie was the greatest friend he would ever have.
