The Archeologists By: Charlie Baker
Dear Mom, We just landed and are waiting for dad to pick us up. It was a rough flight. Sandy listened to music the whole time while I played on my ipod. I can’t wait to see dad for the first time in 4 months. I really want to see what his excavation site looks like. Sorry, gotta go. Love, Adam
“You’re finally here,” Sandy said. I looked up from writing my letter and saw my dad walking through the doorway. “I see you already have your bags,” dad said. “I haven’t seen you in so long,” I exclaimed hugging him. “Its good to see you too,” dad said hugging me back. Dad bent down and picked up our bags. We walked out the door to his black Jeep Wrangler walking hand in hand.
We hopped in dad’s car and started out on the highway, or whatever you would call this old dusty road. Dad put on the radio, and since there were no speed limits, pushed the Jeep all the way up to 85. "Whoa dad, slow down," Sandy said having to yell over the sound of the radio and the wind. Dad let it go down to 75, which made Sandy feel a little better, but I could tell Sandy still didn't like it.
When we finally got to the excavation site, Sandy looked like she was about to puke. “Hey, would you rather get here at 7 pm or 7 am?” My dad asked Sandy sarcastically. “7pm,” Sandy said doubling over. Dad had already set up a tent for us, so Sandy went straight in and lay down for awhile. While Sandy was laying down, dad showed me around the excavation site and introduced me to a few of his band members.
When sandy finally came out we showed her around the excavation site and dad introduced her to some of his friends. The morning was a bit rough, because Sandy and I didn’t know what to do, but in the afternoon dad let us walk around in the desert a little. Before we left, he gave us a map, a compass, and two bottles of water.
Once we got out of the camp, Sandy and I went south, so we knew that if we got lost, we would just go back north to find the camp. We walked for about ten minutes, then stopped to take a drink. I sat down gratefully, but Sandy looked like she wanted to go a bit more.
“No, we’re not going any further until I get a swig of water,” I said firmly after taking a mouthful of water. “Can’t we just go a little longer, I am feeling so much better after getting food in me,” Sandy pouted, “after all I am older than you.” “Nope, and you’ll just get older if you don’t let me sit for a bit,” I told her. Sandy reluctantly sat down.
“Ow!” Sandy yelped standing right back up. “What is it?” I asked looking at where she sat down. There was a big rock sticking out from the earth. “That's gotta hurt” I said trying to pull the rock out from the ground so she could sit down. The rock just wouldn’t budge though. I tried to dig around it with my hands, so it would be easier to pull out, but it looked like it was just getting bigger and bigger.
“It must be an ancient artifact from the B.C. time period,” Sandy said from behind me. “Go get dad, take the compass and the map, and leave one water bottle with me, In about 15 minutes I’ll start calling your name, so you know where I am,” I said giving the compass and the map to her.
“Make that 10 minutes,” Sandy said already sprinting off to the excavation site. I watched the dust fly up behind my sister as she sprinted away, but then it settled back down and I had nothing to do. I started to take some swigs of my water, and see how far I could spit little drops of water.
I didn’t really notice the jeep coming my way until I heard its engine and saw the dust flying. “Over here Sandy,” I started yelling even though I knew she saw me. I started waving my hands and jumping up and down and pointing to the rock. I saw my dad gave me a little wave, and both of our smiles broadened.
“So, what do you have here,” my dad said hopping out of the jeep. “We’re not sure what it really is, but it looks big enough to be an artifact,” Sandy said hopping out of the jeep. I knelt down next to it, and motioned for my dad to look at it. After about 5 minutes my dad was convinced it was an artifact, and not just a plain old rock. So we hopped in the jeep and went back to the campsite, where dad’s friends had just stopped for the day.
At dinner that night my dad told everyone about the find, and told them that everyone is to pack up, and that we are moving our site to encircle the artifact, so we can be doing constant work on.
The next morning we woke up early and moved the excavation site over to the artifact. Once we were all settled in, I started to write mom another letter about the new discovery and that I will tell her what it is when we finish digging it up. In two days time we had it dug up. My dad told me that we had found a statue of the legendary king Gilgamesh.
