History is built into the very walls of Town Hall Birmingham, and when City Organist Thomas Trotter plays the organ there, that heritage springs vibrantly to life. The first of this season’s lunchtime concerts features two composers who actually performed in Town Hall themselves: Mendelssohn and Stanford. But they’re just part of a musical journey that spans five centuries in one hour, from Susato’s lively medieval dances to Dan Loccklair’s 20th century classic. Ticket price: £6
It’s not just about pigeons here in Birmingham city centre. Today at Town Hall we’ve got nightingales, blackbirds, cuckoos (a pair) and even a thieving magpie. They’ll all flutter by in this delightfully-conceived recital from Thomas Trotter. And whether they’re wearing the dazzling plumage of Olivier Messiaen, escaping Handel’s gilded baroque cage, or singing their hearts out to melodies by Grieg, Rossini and Bach, there’s no more charming way to spend your lunch hour. Ticket price: £6

J. S. Bach Toccata in F major, BWV 540 Dowland Three Dances Francaix Suite Carmelite Reubke Sonata on the 94th Psalm
Frankenstein (1910) Nosferatu (1921)
“Arise, thou Judge of the world!” The 19th century Romantics did everything on an epic scale – and Julius Reubke’s mighty Sonata on the 94th Psalm is no exception. Music this grand needs an organ to match it; and with Thomas Trotter at the keyboard of the Symphony Hall organ, it’ll be a thunderous climax to a concert that begins with Bach, as well as the gentler visions of John Dowland and Jean Francaix.
There’s nothing quite like the sound of the historic Town Hall organ to send shivers down your spine at Halloween. Join us if you dare! Ticket price: £18 (inc. per ticket commission)

There’s been a lot of musical history made in Town Hall, Birmingham. Today there’ll be a bit more, as Thomas Trotter gives the first Birmingham performance of a major new organ work written specially for him by Francis Pott. It’s a powerful new addition to a long and noble tradition – and Trotter makes the most of that, pairing it with famous showpieces by Marcel Dupré, Camille Saint-Saëns, and of course Bach. Ticket price: £6
When an organ plays, you can’t help but raise your eyes to the heavens. Thomas Trotter has put together a whole lunchtime of music with a celestial theme, ranging from the timeless grandeur of Sweelinck and de Grigny to the unbuckled energy of Holst’s Jupiter. Music by Wagner, Vierné and the astronomer-composer William Herschel means that even if you’re sitting in the stalls, your head will be in the stars. Ticket price: £6
