TONY IOMMI IN CONVERSATION WITH GARY NEWBON Saturday 19 March 7.30pm TOWN HALL Widely renowned as one of the world’s finest guitarists, Tony Iommi is the founder and primary songwriter of the iconic Black Sabbath. This exclusive appearance finds him reviewing his life and career at the forefront of one of the biggest bands in musical history. He can take rightful credit for pioneering the massive riffs that eventually became known as heavy metal as Black Sabbath sold millions of albums all over the world, headlining arenas and festivals to this day as well as inspiring countless bands and artists. Sabbath appeared at Town Hall on a number of occasions in the early 70s and Tony Iommi was last on stage here in 2015 for the Pride of Birmingham Awards. UNEASY LISTENING: An Evening with Clint Mansell plus special guests Wednesday 23 March 7.30pm SYMPHONY HALL Uneasy Listening: An Evening with Clint Mansell promises to be a breath-taking performance of film music from the acclaimed British composer – the man behind some of the most celebrated soundtracks of the past two decades. Returning to the UK to play live, Clint makes his homecoming debut at Symphony Hall, where he will perform works from his scores, with his band (Mike Fonte, Clint Walsh and Eric Gardner), alongside pianist Carly Paradis and Sonus Quartet (Vanessa Freebairn-Smith, Kathleen Sloan, Jennifer Takamatsu & Rob Brophy).

THE NECKS AND JAMES MCVINNIE (ORGAN) Music by Squarepusher, Philip Glass and The Necks performed on Town Hall’s magnificent organ Tuesday 5 April TBC TOWN HALL The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Part of their 30th anniversary season, this concert brings pianist Chris Abrahams out from behind the piano as the trio explore the powerful, intricate and varied sonorities of Town Hall’s splendid organ. Previously Assistant Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, James McVinnie is fast becoming the country’s leading performer of new organ music. As a member of the Bedroom Community label collective, his boundless approach has led him to collaborate with some of the world’s leading artists including Nico Muhly, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Bryce Dessner (The National). He will play a specially commissioned score by electronic artist Squarepusher (Warp Records) which echoes the fast, cut-up beats and synth lines for which he is so well known, interlaced with expansive classical influences and electronics. The programme will also include two of Philip Glass’s most emblematic organ pieces which are rarely heard live on instruments of this scale. Produced by No-Nation
