TOWN HALL Pioneering American singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega returns to the UK in October 2016 with her brand new tour Lover, Beloved. This is in support of the album of the same name which has derived from Suzanne’s lifelong interest in novelist and short story writer Carson McCullers. Tony Hadley, legendary solo singer and Spandau Ballet front man brings an orchestra to Symphony Hall in October 2016. As lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley has, over the years, earned the accolade of being one of pop music’s greatest vocalists. As a solo artist in his own right who has spent the past twenty years entertaining audiences all over the world, his stunning rich voice has lost none of its power.

12

“Man, there’s nothing like being told you’re dying to make you feel alive.” – Wilko Wilko commented in a recent interview that he was diagnosed in late 2012 with terminal pancreatic cancer. But despite the doctors’ worst predictions he continues to perform and present himself with vigour and a new zest for life. Heavily influenced by legendary guitarist Mick Green from 60’s rockers Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, Wilko employs a finger-style, chop-chord strumming action (the ‘stab’, as he describes it). This allows for chords and lead to be played at the same time, giving a fluency and a distinctive sound very unlike the cleaner swat of a pick.

MATCH & FUSE MINI FESTIVAL HORSE ORCHESTRA KROKOFANT WED 26 OCTOBER 8PM

HARE & HOUNDS Powered by musician DIY, Match & Fuse connect bands from different European countries who each perform a set and then they ‘fuse’ (play) together to create new works. Producing genre mash-ups which give new angles on instrumental and vocal music, it’s a rare chance to hear a spectrum of sounds from the European and UK underground. Dissolving barriers between genres and countries, Horse Orchestra are a Nordic band who combine elements from different parts of the history of jazz. Classical compositions from 1920’s New Orleans and Chicago meet 1960’s free jazz (with various detours), creating an original, post-modern, and not least humorous style. Krokofant are a semi-improvising power trio bolting hard boiled improvisation onto rock beats and driving rhythms. Sounding like some unholy

three-way marriage of early 70s jazz rock, the sprawling progressive odysseys of King Crimson, and the fierce heat of Peter Brötzmann’s harsh free jazz ensembles. The night is completed by a top Birmingham based act, helping to create a cross border collaboration which celebrates the energy and vibrancy of the music scenes across Europe.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS Performances Birmingham is one of the largest regional arts charities in the country. Ticket sales alone cannot sustain our programme; we rely on voluntary contributions to enable us to continue and expand our work. We aim to reach even more people within our communities and further develop our wide-ranging programme. We would like to thank all our supporters for their generous contributions to our charitable work over the last year. If you are interested in supporting please take a look at our website www.thsh.co.uk/support-us or contact our Development Team on 0121 644 5072 or 0121 644 5075.
