“You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be” Having conquered the world music charts, London singer Gabrielle is back with her first album in more than a decade. She talks to Joe Nerssessian about what inspired her to return to the studio. It’s been a long 11 years since soul songstress Gabrielle released her last album. The 48-yearold boasts two Brit Awards and one of the best pop soundtracks of all time with Out Of Reach, recorded for Bridget Jones’s Diary in 2001.

It didn’t stop her clambering on to a table and singing an original song in the school canteen, though. And nor did it stop her years later, singing over the tannoy in her first job at a supermarket. Despite citing those two incidents, she admits she was ashamed of dreaming of being a pop star. “I didn’t look a particular way, I had a lazy eyelid. How dare I even imagine that I could possibly be a singer? It wasn’t an aspiration I had. It wasn’t something I would have told people because it would have been deemed ridiculous. Who do you think you are? There’s no-one on TV who looks like you.”

MARCH

It was her eye – which is affected by a condition called ptosis – that initially stopped her from dreaming of being a pop star.

“Even when I was moonlighting in a nightclub in Greek Street in Soho, there were always people that were thinner than me, had better voices than me. So again my stage was confined. I was happy with that – if that’s all it ever was, I’d have been happy.” She proved her doubters wrong though and grins with glee as she recalls someone signing her school leaving book with the sarcastic message: “See you on Top Of The Pops Ha Ha Ha.” “I kept the book. So carry on laughing. I’d like to think I paved the way for anyone who has hangups on how they look. If I can do it, then you can be whatever you want to be.” Gabrielle will perform at Town Hall on Thursday 28 March 2019 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available online, via telephone and also at the Symphony Hall box office, priced from £38 including commission.

“Brummies are the friendliest people I’ve ever met” Francis Rossi opened the biggest rock gig in history when Status Quo opened Live Aid before an audience of 1.9 billion. His band have sold a remarkable 100 million records and score more than 60 chart hits – the highest for any rock band ever. He’s won BRIT Awards, starred in his own film and enjoyed hits with Rockin’ All Over The World, Whatever You Want, Down Down and Caroline, among many others. Rossi will spill the beans on his remarkable life when he takes to the road with I Talk Too Much. The show will be an evening of chat and music and it will reach Town Hall on March 30 as part of a 36-date UK tour. Rossi will talk about the highs and lows, his relationship with former bandmate Rick Parfitt and much more during an exhilarating evening.

The show coincides with the release of Rossi’s explosive autobiography, also called I Talk Too Much, and the star will meet fans after the show to sign copies. Rossi finds it remarkable that his band survived because during the 1960s and 1970s there were no thoughts of Golden Anniversaries. “Everybody in the sixties and seventies was told that it wouldn’t last. We thought we’d be old by the age of 30. People only ever notice the successes, not the failures.

MARCH

“I’m really looking forward to the talky tour,” he says. “I’ll have my acoustic on stage with me and we’ll just have to see where it leads.”

“But the drive in me to keep it going and do another brilliant show or to get another encore is as strong as ever. I still want the adulation. I still want people to think they love the band, love the book or love the talk.” Rossi says there have been too many highlights to remember during his band’s remarkable career. He admits that people constantly ask about Live Aid, the famine relief concert organised by Bob Geldof that they opened. “There was real euphoria and opening with Rockin’ All Over The World made sense. I had a feeling at the time we were all doing something truly wonderful.” Rossi can’t wait to get started at the Town Hall in I Talk Too Much. “I genuinely like Birmingham. I have so many friends from that city and Brummies are the friendliest people I’ve ever met. I’m looking forward to the show.” Francis Rossi will perform at Town Hall on Saturday 30 March 2019. “Collabro has changed my life dramatically” Earlier this year, Collabro popped into Symphony Hall whilst on tour supporting Barry Manilow. Jamie Lambert spoke to Andy Richardson about how being in the group has changed his life. Back in the day, Jamie Lambert used to drive past the Royal Albert Hall and the London Palladium and dream. He was working part-time in the finance department of Barts Health NHS Trust, in London, and looking for a break. And while he hoped he might one day sing at such incredible venues or enjoy chart success, he realised it wasn’t sensible to bank on that. And then his life changed. He became friends with Matt Pagan and the two of them used social media to find three other singers to complete the Collabro line-up. They gigged at a pub near London Bridge and decided to audition for Britain’s Got Talent, figuring they had nothing to lose. A month after forming, they found themselves singing for Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams. Their rendition of Stars, from Les Miserables, earned them a standing ovation. Four months later, they appeared on BGT’s live final – and won by a landslide with more than a quarter of the vote. Things have never been the same since. They signed a million pound record deal and their debut album went to number one. They headlined the London Palladium and sold 50,000 tickets for their tour, as well as joining Cliff Richard on his major headline tour of the UK.

Jamie says it’s been a whirlwind. “It’s been fabulous. I loved working at Barts but Collabro has changed my life dramatically and sometimes it’s a bit weird to drive past where I used to work. It’s been four years now and we’ve just announced the fourth major tour and fourth album.” That tour will visit Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on April 15, before they return to the Albert Hall a few days later. “We have a very dedicated fan base and we’re gigging throughout the year. The people who follow us feel very much like fans for life; it’s almost like a family. The fans are very much valued. “From our perspective, we hope to keep going for a long time. We each have our own little bits outside the band and do separate pantos but then we get back together to do these epic 50-date tours.” Jamie keeps his feet on the ground and doesn’t forget how fortunate the band are. One minute he was working in the NHS – within a month or so he was on TV for the start of an incredible ride. “We are privileged to have been going for four years. Last year we released our own album and it still got into the top 10 and when it comes to touring we’re doing more tickets than ever before. We’re having to look forward for about a-year-and-a-half.” Jamie has mixed feelings about Britain’s Got Talent. Much of it was surreal as the band found themselves becoming an overnight success. Other bits were entirely forgettable. “The truth about BGT is that a lot of it was awful. It’s sort of like anything that’s incredible, there’s always a terrible side. It was almost like getting into a new relationship where everything’s a crazy and a buzz but also mad. There was a downside and you have to remember that this is a crazy and competitive industry. “To go from playing in a pub to being in front of 12 million and to go from 300 Twitter followers to 100,000 was remarkable. We went from zero to 100 in six weeks. We were quite lucky that a couple of us were business-minded. We weren’t teens and we weren’t too star struck. But it’s so easy to get caught up in the madness of it. I’m just grateful that we’ve lived through that. These days, it’s much better. We control everything and work together well. It’s been two years as a four and we get on so well. The system works, it’s like a well-oiled machine.” Though Collabro emerged from the world of TV, they are happiest when they’re in theatres. Playing to a live audience gives them the greatest buzz of all, which is why they undertake such gargantuan tours. “While TV is great, we love that, we also enjoy performing live, probably even more. That’s why the next tour is so cool.” Collabro, the world’s most successful Musical Theatre group, return to Symphony Hall on Monday 15 April.
