It’s not just Hear’Say…Suzanne Shaw is producing a show! Suzanne Shaw is coming to Birmingham with a glittering new show – but for once, she won’t be the one taking the spotlight on stage, as she explains to Roz Laws. The singer and actress is the creative mastermind behind Bravery to the Bell, a variety show at Symphony Hall in September to raise money for a special charity. It’s to celebrate 30 years of Children with Cancer UK and is named after the joyful practice of patients ringing a bell on the cancer ward to mark the end of their treatment. The line-up of entertainers includes singers Fleur East and Joe McElderry plus Britain’s Got Talent’s dance group Flawless and illusionist Marc Spelmann. Former Hear’Say star Suzanne is producing the show as part of her new career in event and artist management. It means she is dropping her microphone and picking up spreadsheets, and stepping into business meetings instead of on to the stage. She set up Bourne Media Group with her business partner a year ago and one of their main clients is Children with Cancer. It was founded by Eddie and Marion O’Gorman after the heart-breaking deaths of both their children, Paul and Jean, from cancer within nine months of each other. The charity has raised £230 million to support research into childhood cancers and to provide better facilities for patients and their families. Last year Eddie O’Gorman was given a Lifetime
Achievement Award at the Pride of Britain Awards. “Part of my job now is to raise awareness of this wonderful charity,” says Suzanne, 37, mum to Corey, 14, and three-year-old Rafferty. Some people are surprised to discover it’s me they’re dealing with when I email them about business. Sometimes it’s an advantage, but I will always get ‘She’s the girl from Hear’Say’. I have to dig deep and prove myself, show I can deliver and that I know what I’m talking about. I have an eye for this business and I know what works and what doesn’t. “That doesn’t mean I don’t wake up in the night worrying about something! I’ve had to learn new skills, such as marketing strategies, how to fill in spreadsheets and be really accurate with everything. I almost sent something off to be printed as 10,000 flyers until I spotted the date was wrong. “Spreadsheets confuse me, I’ve never been good with numbers. Thankfully I’ve picked the perfect team to help me. I still like performing but I find producing more creative these days. I didn’t fall out of love with performing but the business isn’t what it used to be. It’s more focused on reality and social influencers these days. “I set up Bourne Media Group with my business partner Bill Blenkarn. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I left Emmerdale eight years
ago and I started thinking about being more creative behind the scenes. Last year I wrote and produced a sitcom pilot with my Hear’Say friend Noel Sullivan. It’s called Save Our Savoy, about the front-of-house staff at an ailing Welsh theatre trying to save it from being turned into a gym. We shot the pilot with Noel starring in it. Originally I was going to be in it too, but then Sally Phillips came along and she’s brilliant. It’s not a vanity project for me, I just want the best person for the part. I don’t want to be all ‘write the theme tune, sing the theme tune’!” Now Suzanne is concentrating on Bravery to the Bell. She has booked in at four venues around the country, including Symphony Hall on September 22. She knows Birmingham well after starring as Cinderella in the Hippodrome’s panto two years ago. “I’ve been touring the country looking at theatres from a different perspective than the one I’m used to. I’m chuffed to get Symphony Hall as it’s such a stunning venue. I want Bravery to the Bell to be a good old-fashioned variety show for all the family but with a modern twist. I know Flawless and Joe McElderry is a good friend since we were in panto together last year. I didn’t know Fleur but I brought her in because she’s very ‘of the moment’ after I’m a Celebrity, where we really got to know her personality. And she’s a great performer. The name Bravery to the Bell had a nice, pardon the pun, ring to it. As part of the finale, local children in remission will ring the bell on stage in front of 2,000 people. It’ll be emotional but hopefully a happy celebration, and all of the money raised will go to a great cause.” Suzanne knows about the cruelty of cancer after her father died of a brain tumour in 2012. She says: “He died far too early but he was 62. I can’t imagine how devastating it would be to lose a child. What the O’Gormans went through is
absolutely heart-wrenching. They were amazing to turn their tragedy into triumph. Thanks to their fundraising, the chances of survival are so much greater now. If this research had been done 30 years ago, Paul O’Gorman would still be alive now. “Meeting the children helped by the charity has touched me massively. Children should be running around in the garden, not thinking about their next chemotherapy session. We have fallen in love with the charity as a family. My fiancé Sam ran the London Marathon this year for Children with Cancer. If he can do that, then I can put on a show! Watching him and the other runners was so emotional, I got really tearful. “I really wanted to run it myself but my knees would give out. I have too many Dancing on Ice injuries. I tried a half marathon a few years ago and suffered really badly with shin splints, so I have to help in other ways. “I can’t wait to stand in the wings at Bravery to the Bell, watching my show entertain thousands.” Bravery to the Bell is at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on Sun 22 September.
Bravery To The Bell Fleur East, Joe McElderry, Flawless, Britain’s Got Talent illusionist Marc Spelmann, West End’s Aladdin Matt Croke, X Factor’s Lauren Platt and many more, come together to provide you with an evening of superb entertainment suitable for the whole family to celebrate the success of the charity Children With Cancer UK. This transformation of the foyers in Symphony Hall will provide local, regional and national communities with a musical hub, boasting brand-new spaces for informal performances, along with improved bars, increased seating, refurbished toilets and accessible toilets on every level plus a brand-new city café.
Sixties Gold 2019 Re-live the magic of the 1960s, as Sixties Gold 2019 returns with an even stronger line-up including Hermans Hermits, The Merseybeats, The Marmalade, Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders and Steve Ellis. Date: Sun 24 November Venue: Symphony Hall Time: 7:30PM Tickets: £38*

You will still be able to enter the venue from The ICC mall, access bars and pre-order interval drinks and access toilets. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to welcoming you to our worldclass concert hall.
