ABATE OF COLORADO

Legislative Updates

Hello Concerned Motorcyclists,

E

ven though the General Assembly isn’t currently in session, there are plenty of things to do to keep me legislatively active. First off, you can’t just wait till the next session starts to decide what bills you want to introduce and try to get a sponsor at that time. Legislators decide a couple months before session starts what bills they want to pursue. So starting next month I’ll be contacting legislators already for next year’s session. Last month I wrote about SB17-027, Increase Penalty for Texting While Driving, and the misinformation put out by the media. Since then, I’ve met with a group who was very influential in getting that bill passed, CORD – Coloradoans Organized for Responsible Driving. This organization was formed after 2 motorcyclists were killed while riding on Parker Road when struck by a driver who was high, drunk, and texting at the time of the accident. I’ve met with this group, along with other concerned advocates, to discuss what might be done to address the issue of distracted driving in next year’s General Assembly. I’ll keep you updated. Meanwhile the Transportation Legislative Review Committee (TLRC) has met a couple times already. The TLRC is an interim committee that meets during the time from the end of one legislative session to the beginning of the next session, basically from May to January. The committee is comprised of all the members of the Senate Transportation Committee and the House Transportation & Energy Committee (18 members). They travel throughout the state meeting with local officials and stakeholders and tour various highway projects to gather information for possible legislative issues that might be introduced next session. They’ve 6 Thunder Roads Magazine® Colorado

been to southwest Colorado on July 24th & 25th, northeast Colorado on August 14th & 15th, and are scheduled to go to northwest Colorado on August 28th & 29th and southeast Colorado on October 24th – 26th. They will also have 2 sessions at the Capitol, September 20th and November 2nd. At the September meeting, topics will be presented for possible bills next session and at the November meeting the topics will be voted on and actually assigned to particular legislators to pursue and draft bills for the next session. ABATE is currently working on our 2018 legislative agenda by surveying our members at local district meetings and prioritizing possible issues. We are a membership based organization and make decisions from member’s input. Possible topics for action this year are: texting while driving; increased penalty for distracted driving; profiling of motorcyclists; redlight bill; lane-splitting; and bicycle registrations. Not all the issues can be addressed, so we will be prioritizing them and pursuing the top 2 or 3. Of course, we’ll also be addressing a resolution for “May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” which needs to be done each year. Since the MOST program will be administered by the CSP starting January 1, 2018, any pertinent legislation should be originated by them, but I really don’t see any as most of the concerns will be dealt with in the revised rules. Remember to keep legislatively active. Your legislators really do want to hear from you. The laws that are passed could have a direct effect on your lives and your ability to ride the way you want to. Stump Legislative Affairs Officer – ABATE of Colorado

This is my 2016 Road Glide Ultra Limited Custom Bagger that my wife and I built. I purchased this bike in October 2016 and it was a completely totaled wreck. I had to replace a lot of parts that were either broken or missing. When we brought it home, we just started tearing it apart. I had made a deadline for myself to have it done by January to take it to Evansville to the Mid America Motorcycle Expo. I got in contact with Tol Designs to use their tank covers, side covers and at that time they had just released a new bag and fender, called Pimp Slap, so I ordered it also. While waiting on parts to show up, we were still in teardown stages so we had things to do while we waited. We even had to replace the frame because it had been bent at the neck. We also purchased new Arlen Ness front legs and a 26-inch SMT Wheel. In order to make the 26-inch wheel fit, I used an American Suspension bolt on neck and tree kit. I lowered the front end using a Burly 2-inch lowering kit and for the rear I used a Dirty Air air ride kit.

To stop the larger front wheel, I used a HHI 6 piston caliper and to control that larger front end, I used a set of 10-inch Paul Yaffe bars. We also decided to change the factory floorboards to a set of custom front and rear floorboards from Scrub Cycles. Last, but not least, I had to upgrade the stereo system! I used an Alpine head unit with cd/Bluetooth and a Rockford Fosgate 400 watt four channel amplifier. For the speakers, I used a set of DS 18-6.5” speakers for the fairing and I mounted a set, 1 in each bag, of DS 18-8” speakers. We topped off the bike with an Imperial White with a blue stripe and 10 grams of white pearl on top. It was painted by Jimmy Bishop from Brownstown, IN. We named the bike Shocker because every time I get it out, people are always shocked when I show the before pictures. My wife, Tracy, and I ride as often as we can! If you see us out and about, make sure to stop by and say hi. Jeremy Wade

What Are the Rules for Motorcycles in Colorado’s HOV Lanes? By Scott O’Sullivan, The O’Sullivan Law Firm Nothing makes me happier than when I get a question from someone who describes himself as a “frequent reader” of my blog or magazine articles. It’s always nice to know that I’m sharing information that people use! Recently, I got this question from a Denver motorcycle rider: “What are the rules for motorcycles in Colorado’s HOV lanes?” That is a very good question, not only because it’s important to know the rules but also because HOV lanes can be very dangerous for motorcyclists if they’re not hyper-aware of their surroundings. So, I’m going to cover both topics here:

E-470. Motorcycles are no longer required to have a pass to use CDOT’s HOV Express Lanes for free. Toll roads or Express Lanes that do not allow HOV vehicles for free (E-470, Northwest Parkway, I-70 Mountain Express Lane) still require a pre-paid toll balance and pass to avoid higher license plate toll charges. Any account questions should be directed to the ExpressToll Service Center at 303-537-3470, or customerservice@expresstoll.com. Please call or email me if you need clarification. Situational Awareness for Motorcycles in Colorado’s HOV Lanes Now that you know which HOV lanes and Express Lanes are free for motorcyclists, use them when you can without hesitation! But I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t include a warning in this article about the hazards to motorcyclists in HOV lanes.

1. Rules for motorcyclists in Colorado’s HOV lanes (with some bonus Let me illustrate with a story: One day, I was driving home from a court material that describes where those lanes are and how they’re hearing in Boulder. I was on I-36 and, because I didn’t have a pass or different) transponder, I was in the regular flow of traffic to the right. During that long, tedious drive, I witnessed three different accidents! Situational awareness for motorcycles in HOV lanes speed up like crazy when they see an opening and then they jam on Rules for Motorcyclists in Colorado’s HOV Lanes their brakes when everything slows down. The scariest part, though, was the fact that some people, First, let’s define the difference between HOV lanes and Express in order to avoid hitting the car in front of them, swerved directly into Lanes in Colorado: the HOV lane without looking to see if there were oncoming cars or motorcycles. High Occupancy Lanes (HOV) can be found all over Colorado. They are generally free for anyone to use as long as there are Can you imagine the devastating injuries this could cause a three people in the vehicle. Yes, I said three! My advice is that you ride in the far left portion of the HOV lane to avoid cars swerving into the lane from the right. infrastructure and people are charged a toll for using them. The most common of these are E-470, the Northwest Parkway and the Another big issue that I see with HOV lanes is that the people who I-70 Mountain Express Lane. use them tend to speed, and they get impatient with drivers who go the speed limit. Wild Ride

5 Things every self-respecting Biker should know You’ve got the ride, now make it yours

By Dallas Hageman Wild Ride Radio Host www.WildRideRadio.com Every rider is like every motorcycle, unique in their own way. From my travels across the U.S. and dealings with other riders I have found that for the most part there are a couple of key things that get neglected which can aid in the enjoyment of riding a motorcycle. Some are subtle and others are as subtle as a gorilla in a tutu so below I have listed five key things that every self-respecting rider should know. If you follow these guidelines then I have no doubt that your next ride will be as enjoyable as a mother-in-lawless holiday. 1. Know how to ride This point may seem rather obvious but I have found that some riders still do not know how to properly operate their motorcycles. It is somewhat shocking considering they probably spent money on riding classes, sold one of their children into slavery to afford some vey overpriced gear and got a second mortgage to buy the bike of their dreams. They look the part and can (sort of) ride the part… but after that it seems as though all interest in actually honing any type of skill is null and void. Judging from what I have consistently seen at any major rally it is nothing short of a miracle that most riders can maneuver any type of corner. Heaven forbid Sturgis would be located near a road with more than two turns in it. I should think if that were the case there would be a massive pileup every year of twisted metal and dazed bikers. The point is riding is like anything else in life, if you want to make it better, you have to practice. LEARN a bike, don’t just own one. Spend some saddle time with it, find a curvy road, and take an advanced rider course. Find out just what 12 Thunder Roads Magazine® Colorado

you and your bike can really do. It will be worth it and you will be surprised at just how much more enjoyable it will be. 2. Know how to fit your bike Not only should you know HOW to ride your motorcycle but know how to FIT your motorcycle. On my radio show I recently talked about an article where some upwards of 65% of riders don’t change anything on their bikes to fit them. That surprised me because motorcycles are a “one size fits all” produced product and I figured more motorcyclists knew that. Sure, there are different models to fit various riders, but within those models they all have the same fitment. Manufacturers have to crank out thousands and thousands of bikes and can’t be bothered by fitting thousands and thousands of different body types. This is one reason that PG&A (parts, goods and accessories) are so important for manufacturers to provide. To remedy the problem of improper fitment get on your bike, see where you need the handle bars located at, look at the windshield and if it needs to be raised or lowered. Think about where your feet rest and if your butt likes the seat it currently is in. Consider if all of these things are comfortable and if they are located at a position fit for YOU. If the answer is no, it may be time to start the process of fitting the bike to YOU. You will find that if done properly, whenever you slide on your scoot, it will feel like slipping into a glove. 3. Know how to pack Ladies, this may be directed more towards you but this advice can be applied to everyone. If you have just purchased a bike and have yet to go on a road trip let me tell you a secret… you have almost no room to store any of your crap. That’s right. The ten pairs of shoes, curling iron, extra sleeping pillow, two cats and that framed picture of your mother will have to stay home. Again, I am not denigrating women (I love them… especially my wife), but females tend to carry more and require additional items on road trips. Now,

September 2017

being a guy my list to pack for a road trip is this: 1 pair of underwear. That’s it. I probably need to pack a little more than that and admittedly regret it after the first day so it is necessary to learn how and what to pack for a motorcycle trip. After many years and a quarter of a million miles under my belt, I’ve found some necessary things to pack for any good and enjoyable road trip. Depending on the season, I pack cold/ heated gear and extra warm gloves for fall and winter and if its spring or summer it is still a good idea to pack a hoodie or light jacket. Also, bring your top and bottom leathers, along with helmets and a couple of bandanas. I try to pack a pair of clothes for three days’ time and if the trip is longer, I bring dry laundry detergent to do a load of laundry and save space in the bike. Also, when packing clothes, fold them in half then roll them like a burrito, it saves space and keeps clothes from wrinkling. Finally, pack a map (you know… the old fashioned paper kind) in case you lose battery life on your GPS. Think about other ESSENTIAL stuff you may need and throw it in the saddlebag as well. I’m sure you have your own list and will add or subtract from mine but all in all, pack what you’ll NEED, not want.

5. Know how to enjoy it This should to be the simplest point but is more complex than what it seems to be on the surface. You see, I have noticed that MANY people who buy into the “rider” or “biker” lifestyle do so to stand out from society, but once “in” all they want to do is fit in with the crowd. From what I have seen, many buy the bike that they think others like, wear the clothing others might approve of and are lacking confidence unless 4. Know how to be self sufficient “approved” by other riders. This is complete and Guys, this one is for you. In this day and age it utter B.S. and I’m here to tell YOU… to just be YOU. seems as though very few people are self-sufficient. You purchased a bike to express YOURSELF and if Gone are the days of manly men who knew how to someone does not like YOU then I would encourage get crap done. This continuous emasculation of men you to invite them to walk off a bridge. Real and by the fake media and various groups of pink-haired confident riders know who they are and don’t look for lunatics is nothing short of pathetic, so if you are part the approval of others. If your riding “friends” judge you of the castrated majority of limp boned guys, consider and make you feel small for the kind of bike you prefer this your slap in the face to wake up. Learn how to do to own, then find new friends. There are countless stuff. You know… general stuff, like back up a truck, forums and groups I belong to and I am consistently read a map, fix a flat, and build a fire, change your shocked at how many small and petulant people are oil. Just general stuff that your grandfather would be on social media, denigrating others for what they have, embarrassed you don’t know how to do. Bikers are (or or don’t have. I say screw them. Just be you, own the SHOULD be) self-sufficient and knowing how to do bike you love and enjoy the hell out of it. Life is WAY everyday tasks should be a requirement for anyone too short to deal with small people. If you forget them wanting to climb on a bike. Know the basics of how you’ll find other, valuable friends that accept you for your motorcycle works. Sure it’s a great idea to have who you are, not what you ride and THAT will make a charged cell phone to get you out of a pinch, but if riding a motorcycle the most enjoyable it could ever be. it’s a small fix that has downed your bike know how the There you have it… the five things that every Biker hell to fix it. Get familiar with your ride and how it works should know; not to try and fit in, but to get more out of and bring a small bag of tools. Even if you don’t need your riding experience. You bought the bike, grabbed to fix your bike who knows, you may be able to help the gear and wanted the freedom. Now get out there your friends who are still wandering around in a mind with a couple genuine friends and take that curvy road numbed, castrated funk. you always wanted to, it will be worth it. www.thunderroadscolorado.com

Tasty Recipes All of these recipes have been kitchen tested and biker approved. Hooray! One of my favorite times of the year is here. That time when the chili roasters set up on street corners and sell bushels of Hatch and Pueblo green chilies! There is something about that smell, it is intoxicating to me. I buy several bushels and freeze them for using throughout the year. It seems that my supply of chilies lasts until June or July and I have a two-month waiting period before I can buy more. These two recipes are a couple of my favorites and can be made year round if you freeze them like I do.

Honda Releases New Honda CBR250RR Special Edition JAKARTA, Indonesia, August 10, 2017 – PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) released the new Honda CBR250RR Special Edition with a unique theme of the “Art of Kabuki,” a recently popular art trend. This newly designed Supersport model is made in Indonesia, and features a sketch of the map of Indonesia. This special edition commemorates the first anniversary since the world premiere of the Honda CBR250RR, an embodiment of the Total Control philosophy. The new Honda CBR250RR Special Edition presents an iconic theme of Kabuki, with black shock absorbers, a red frame, asymmetric rim colors (front: black / rear: white), and a new white rear seat cowl. AHM Marketing Director Thomas Wijaya said sport bike enthusiasts will be proud of the new appearance, with its unique character and trend-setting styling. The unique appearance of The Art of Kabuki applied to the new Honda CBR250RR Special Edition will bring a special pride to its owner. “The world premiere of the Honda CBR250RR has been awaited by sports bike enthusiasts and rewrites the market of 250cc Supersport models. We are optimistic this unique special edition’s appearance will bring a strong bonding between the customer and their bike. This new design also brings pride to Indonesian Supersport enthusiasts through several features and the best technologies being applied. We have prepared 100 units of the new Honda CBR250RR Special Edition, available on Honda’s Wing Dealer,” said Wijaya. The Kabuki Special version reflects the Japanese traditional ‘Kabukimono’ culture from the Sengoku Period (end 15th Century end 16th Century). The Japanese traditional ‘Kabuki’ play inherits this culture and expression of ‘Kabukimono.’ In the Sengoku Period, there were Samurais who loved being unique, forging a new culture. They were also brave, and performed their social duties. The CBR250RR, an epoch-making model in the sports bike scene in Indonesia, celebrates its anniversary with homage to the Kabukimono, while sharing the same philosophy of the CBR250RR. The CBR250RR outputs up to 28.5kW (38.7PS) / 12.500rpm, with a maximum torque of up to 23.3Nm (2.4kgf.m) / 11.000rpm, from a completely new water-cooled 4-stroke 4-valve straight-twin DOHC 250cc power unit, the CBR250RR is also a class-leading lightweight machine at 165kg (standard type) and 168kg (ABS type). The lightweight chassis and impressive power unit allow the Honda CBR250RR to cover 200m in only 8,65 seconds and reach a top speed of 170km/h. In addition to stunning acceleration, Honda’s ‘Total Control’ philosophy allows the CBR250RR Supersport motorcycle to maximize the rider’s performance and fun. The New Honda CBR250RR Special Edition, The Art of Kabuki (ABS type) is marketed on OTR (On The Road) DKI Jakarta price starting at IDR 70.825.000, and with color options “Anchor Graymetallic” and “Mat Gunpowder Black Metallic” start at IDR 63.525.000 (standard type) and IDR 69.525.000 (ABS type). Preventative Maintenance Tips Performing preventative maintenance on your motorcycle is a must, especially if you want to save money in the long run. Take a look at the following tips for maintaining your ride during and after your riding season. As always, we recommend the purchase of a service manual to reference all specifications for your motorcycle. The Battery: Check your battery and cables, making sure the connections are clean, tight and free of corrosion. If the battery is not a maintenance-free battery, inspect the fluid level and be sure to top off the battery with nothing but distilled water. Battery tenders will extend the life of your motorcycle battery. Fluids: In most cases you shouldn’t have to do much more thaninspect and then top off the crankcase, transmission, primary and brakes with the right grade of lubricant. Regular oil changes and following the manufacturer’s service intervals will prevent any mechanical issues in the future. Note any leaks and repair them, and also take note of any constant fluid usage. Tires: Besides checking for the usual tread wear and sidewall cracking, make sure you check your motorcycle’s service manual for the proper air pressure and wear limits. We sell a wide selection of tire pressure gauges so you can check your tires before every ride. The most common mistake when checking tire pressure is using a different gauge each time. All gauges can be calibrated differently so we recommend using the same gauge every time when checking pressure. Also inspecting for rubbing hazards is a must — especially with the motorcycle loaded with you, your passenger and your luggage. Lights and Turn Signals: Inspecting bulbs and lenses regularly can preventaccidents or hazardous situations while driving at night. Visually inspect all lenses for cracks or areas where rain and moisture can come in contact with the bulb and possibly cause your lighting circuit to fail. 20 Thunder Roads Magazine® Colorado

Drive Components: Don’t just look at the belt or chain; inspect the pulley or sprocket for wear, chips or broken teeth. Our technicians suggest replacing your sprockets or pulleys any time you change the belt and chain. This prevents any existing conditions from damaging the new belt or chain. Regularly checking tension before each ride will also extend the life of your driveline. Check your service manual for the proper specifications. J&P cycles carry an easy-to-check belt-tension gauge that should be in every rider’s toolbox. If your motorcycle has a chain final drive, keeping the chain clean and lubed will extend the life of that chain. Cables: Inspecting cable operation on a regular basis will prevent the need to replace cables that are broken or frayed. We also recommend that you follow your service manual for lubing your cables. J&P Cycles carries a quick and easy Cable Care kit. With this kit you get the lube and adapter to lube the cables with less hassle and mess. Nuts and Bolts: Visually inspect all mounting hardware for missing or loose bolts. Foot pegs and other components falling off your motorcycle can quickly become a safety hazard for you or other drivers on the road. Thread Locking Compound is a rider’s best friend to prevent vibration from loosening those bolts. Cleaning your motorcycle: Keeping your motorcycle clean can prevent rust anddirt from wreaking havoc on your motorcycle’s chrome and other finishes. Rust and corrosion can lead to broken brackets, bolts and damaged hardware, which can leave you stranded on the side of the road.

News Bytes MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY WELCOMES BAN ON GAS POWERED VEHICLES The Motorcycle Industry Association (U.K.) has welcomed reports of a ban on new fossil fuel-powered vehicles starting 2040, saying it will be a “tremendous stimulus” for bike makers. The Government is due to announce a ban on the sale of new petrol (gasoline) and diesel vehicles from 2040 as part of an effort to tackle air pollution, according to several national newspapers. The measure is expected to include a ban on new hybrid vehicles and “could mark the beginning of the end of the prevalence of the internal combustion engine in automotive transport,” reports www.BritishDealerNews.co.uk. The announcement will be in line with a similar commitment already made by France.Steve Kenward, CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), pointed out that no specific mention had been made of motorcycles but added: “I think there’s a great opportunity.”“For all the congestion-busting abilities of motorcycles and the abilities to make electric bikes I think it’s a tremendous stimulus for the motorcycle industry,” Kenward predicts. “It’s a tremendous commercial trigger to push on with electric motorcycles.”Motorcycles made before 2007 are already set to be hit by a £12.50 ($16.10 USD) daily pollution toll for entering London beginning in 2020. INDIA BECOMES WORLD’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURER India has dethroned China from a long reign as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, having already overtaken China to become the largest domestic motorcycle market three years ago. The growth curve is continuing, as India’s growing domestic market and partnerships with English and European bike builders have put the country at the forefront of worldwide two-wheeled production. While overall new motorcycle sales in the U.S. have been about 500,000 a year, and around 125,000 are sold in the United Kingdom, the total sales of machines made in India for the last financial year came to 17.6 million – more every three days than are sold in the UK in a year; more every 11 days than are sold annually in America. Meanwhile, China’s domestic motorcycle market has been in decline for five years as government policy has incentivized electric bicycle sales and denied motorcycles access to city centers across China. Conversely, the relentless growth of motorcycle sales in India is beginning to reshape the global marketplace. According to New Atlas, sales within India grew 6.9% last year, thanks to a fast-growing 1.32 billion domestic population that is quickly urbanizing and emerging from poverty -- India has the fastest GDP growth of any major country. A massive India-wide road construction program is also fueling car and bike sales, just as it did in America a century ago.Currently India’s domestic motorcycle marketplace is dominated by sub-125cc scooters and motorcycles, but larger capacity “luxury” classes are taking an increasing share as the market matures. Royal Enfield, built in India for the past 62 years, sold more than 700,000 motorcycles last year, a figure nearly equal to the combined worldwide sales of HarleyDavidson, KTM, BMW, Triumph, and Ducati, and their production target for this fiscal year is 900,000. MILLIONS OF LICENSED MOTORCYCLISTS DON’T RIDE Nearly 8 million Americans have a motorcycle license, but don’t own a bike. These phantom riders, referred to as “Sleeping License Holders,” have come to the attention of motorcycle manufacturers seeking new customers as baby boomers age out of riding; wanting to wake them up.Many of these ‘sleepers’ were active motorcyclists who had things 30 Thunder Roads Magazine® Colorado

happen in their life that caused them to quit riding: marriage, kids, financial pressures, a job that demands most of their time or simply a change in interests. Others completed rider training, got their license, but never bought a bike. All of which has led Harley-Davidson, Indian and other bike makers to devise new marketing strategies.Harley has set a goal of attracting 2 million new U.S. riders in the next decade and says it’s committed to introducing 100 new motorcycles over the next 10 years, including an electric bike, and that effort is expected to bring some sleeping license holders into bike ownership.Indian Motorcycle Co. is also digging into why the sleepers aren’t taking that next step to become motorcycle owners. “I think, collectively as an industry, we need to answer that,” said Kevin Reilly, vice president of motorcycle marketing for Indian. The median age of U.S. motorcyclists is about 45, according to a report in Cycle World magazine, with an overwhelming number of new bike buyers over the age of 50. ‘E-DUI’ LAW TARGETS DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ELECTRONICS Washington state has enacted a new ‘E-DUI’ law that imposes stiff penalties for driving under the influence... of electronic devices. Under their new distracted driving law, referred to as “E-DUI,” drivers in the Evergreen State will no longer be able to use a cell phone or any electronic device while driving, even when stopped at a traffic light. The bill was drafted in response to a 32% increase in deaths from distracted driving from 2014 to 2015.“Put the cell phones down, preserve life,” Gov. Jay Inslee said on the steps of the Capitol in Olympia, according to Q13 Fox News. Inslee says the bill is called “electronic driving while impaired” for a reason. “When you are driving with a cell phone, you are a more dangerous driver than if you are driving drunk with a .08 blood alcohol level,” he said. The first citation will cost drivers $136, nearly doubling for a second offense within five years. Tickets issued for driving while using hand-held electronics will go on a motorist’s record and reported to their insurance provider, says a website set up by the state explaining the new law.In addition, according to the new law, drivers can also get a $99 ticket for other types of distractions like grooming, smoking, eating or reading if it interferes with safe driving and you are pulled over for another traffic offense. NATIONWIDE ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN TO CURB DRINKING AND RIDING A nationwide campaign to crack down on motorcyclists driving drunk or impaired is underway until Labor Day, with local police and Highway Patrol out in force until after the holiday weekend. The end of the summer is universally celebrated by millions of Americans on Labor Day weekend, and for many motorcyclists the weekend is a chance to close down summer with that last long ride.So ride aware that this high-visibility national enforcement campaign, “Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over,” runs from August 18 through September 4, 2017. During this period, local law enforcement will show zero tolerance for alcohol or drug impaired riding. Increased state and national messages about the dangers of riding impaired, coupled with enforcement and increased officers on the road, aim to drastically reduce death and injuries on our nation’s roadways.Anyone caught riding impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. Nashville helped yank 10 people from their cars and trucks Aug. 4, 2017, just before fire raced through the scene of a crash in southern Illinois. A semi-truck had plowed full speed into cars that had stopped for construction on the highway, explains a newspaper article appearing in The Tennessean, causing a chain-reaction eight-car pileup. Just in front of that pileup: A 10-person crew of music industry executives riding bikes from Nashville to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. Two of the bikers, brothers from a talent agency who were paramedics for 10 years in San Diego, got in touch with 911 operators and immediately began organizing bystanders, while the amateur rescuers went quickly vehicle by vehicle pulling victims to safety: First, a family of six with children ages 6 to 11; then, a couple of guys in a pick-up truck, one with a bad head wound; finally, a woman, screaming, stuck in a car that looked like a crushed beer can.The Nashvillians couldn’t get her out of the car, so they got about 10 guys together and dragged the entire car, 3 feet at a time, across the highway into a grassy median away from the fire. And like in the movies they did so just before flames ripped through three vehicles that already had been emptied of passengers.“It was a trip. I’m still tripped out by it,” one of the highway saints was quoted as saying in USA Today. “There’s no doubt, had we not sprung into action like we did, there would’ve been fatalities.” ROLLING ADS PROMOTE MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS ACROSS NEBRASKA Eight delivery trucks will carry a motorcycle awareness message for 10 weeks this summer while traversing the Cornhusker State as part of a Nebraska Highway Safety Council campaign. Signs on the delivery trucks’ panels warn motorists to “watch for motorcycles everywhere,” by checking mirrors and looking both ways when at intersections and changing lanes. The state Department of Transportation, law enforcement and motorcycle safety groups created the campaign to counter a spate of fatal accidents. Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator Fred Zwonechek said similar campaigns funded by federal motorcycle safety grants have been used in the past to push awareness. “You want to reach drivers, and this is a way to do it,” Zwonechek told the Journal Star newspaper. HARLEY-DAVIDSON POLLUTION FINE REDUCED The U.S. Justice Department has rescinded a requirement that HarleyDavidson Inc spend $3 million on a project to reduce air pollution as part of a $15 million fine the Obama administration levied last year www.thunderroadscolorado.com

for selling illegal tuning kits that cause its vehicles to emit too much pollution.Under direction from the Trump administration, however, the Justice Dept. has determined that the $3 million to retrofit wood-fired stoves was not appropriate, saying: “The original consent decree would have required defendants to pay a non-governmental third-party organization to carry out the mitigation project. Questions exist as to whether this mitigation project is consistent with the new policy.”The move followed a recent decision by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to halt a longstanding practice under which polluters could be compelled to pay for environmental or community projects, in addition to fines and direct compensation to victims. Now, a bill working its way through Congress could make AG Sessions’s policy law. The bill, sponsored by Representative Robert W. Goodlatte (R-VA) would prevent the government from using settlement money from civil cases for purposes other than direct victim compensation or remediation, like cleanups of environmental disasters. OVER A QUARTER OF DRIVERS FEEL “BIKER ENVY” If you’ve ever come across one of those drivers who seem determined to prevent you from passing on your bike, you may feel a sense of satisfaction in knowing that they’re probably just jealous... and it’s going to take them some time to calm down after they arrive late for work.A recent survey has found that 27.8% of drivers experienced ‘biker envy’ when motorcyclists passed them in traffic and it took them an average of 34.2 minutes to feel calm and in control again after getting to work late. The survey of 2,000 commuters by British motorcycle insurer Devitt Insurance also found that employees lose on average 29.6 minutes of work a week because of heavy traffic, costing the U.K. economy £203,846,153 ($261,351,152 USD).Almost 13% had missed a job interview while stuck in traffic, while 32.3% said they would try to sneak into work unnoticed on arriving late. Here’s a better idea: get a bike! QUOTABLE QUOTE: “We have but one flag, one country; let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment…and I assure you that I am with you in heart and in hand.” ~ Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest C.S.A., in a Fourth of July speech in Memphis in 1875; today his statue is targeted for removal.

A man appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. ‘Have you ever done anything of particular merit?’ St. Peter asked. ‘Well, I can think of one thing,’ the man offered. ‘On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a group of bikers who were lewdly joking with a young woman, but I couldn’t tell if she flirtingly liked it or was in peril. I was confused. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his eyebrow piercing, and threw it on the ground. I yelled, ‘Now, back off or I’ll kick the living crap out of all of you!’ St. Peter was impressed, ‘When did this happen?’ The man stuck out his chest in pride; ‘Couple of minutes ago.’ -------------------------------------------------------------The weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth uneventful flight. So, sit back, relax, and....OH... MY….GOD!” Silence followed. Some moments later, the Captain came back on the intercom. “Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m sorry if I scared you. While I was talking to you, a Flight Attendant accidentally spilled coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!” From the back of the plane, an Irish passenger yelled....... For the luva Jaysus,...you should see the back of mine, then. -------------------------------------------------------------A blonde and a lawyer were seating next to each other on a flight. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, so she politely says no and turns to the window for a nap. The lawyer insists and explains that the game is easy and very fun. He explains, “I’m going to ask you a question, and if you do not know the answer, you’ll pay me $5, and vice versa.” Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if you do not know the answer, you pay me $5. and if I do not know the answer, I pay you $500.” This catches the attention of the blonde and, imagining that there will be no end to this torment unless she makes part of his game, she agrees to play. So, she reluctantly, but with full confidence agrees to his game and his rules. (continued)

Ole’ “Scrappy” is sitting at the bar, totally trashed, and yet again feeling sorry for himself he yells out, “you know if I had a dollar for every woman who finds me gross and unattractive, I would eventually have enough money that you’d all be cat-fighting over me”. --------------------------------------------------------------A recent study has proved that women who carry a little extra weight on them live longer then men who mention it. An older lady was somewhat lonely and decided she needed a pet to keep her company So, off to the pet shop she went.. She searched and searched. None of the pets seemed to catch her interest, except this ugly frog. As she walked by the jar he was in, she looked and he winked at her. He whispered, I’m so lonely, too. Buy me and take me home... you won’t ever be sorry.’ The older lady figured, what the heck! She hadn’t found anything else. So, she bought the frog. She placed him in the car, on the front seat beside her. As she was slowly driving down the road, the frog whispered to her Kiss me and you won’t be sorry!.” So, the older lady figured, WHAT THE HECK, and kissed the frog. Immediately the frog turned into an absolutely gorgeous, sexy, young, handsome Prince Charming. The Prince then returned the older lady’s kiss. Suddenly the older lady felt herself transforming from his kiss. Now can you guess what the older lady turned into? She turned into the first motel she could find! She’s older....not fookin’ dead!

The lawyer asks the first question, “How far is the Earth from the Moon?” The blonde did not say a word, opened her purse, took out a $5 bill and handed it to him. “Okay,” said the lawyer, “it’s your turn to ask.” She asks the lawyer: “What goes up a mountain with three legs and comes down with four legs?” The lawyer, perplexed, picks up his laptop and searches all his references — no answer. He searches the net and the library of Congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends emails to all his friends and co-workers but, also, no answer. After an hour, he wakes the blonde and reluctantly hands her $500. “Thank you,” the blonde says, and goes back to sleep some more. The lawyer, annoyed, wakes her up and asks, “Well, what is the answer?” Without a word, she takes her purse, hands him $5. and goes back to sleep. Well played, blondie! www.thunderroadscolorado.com
