Architecture 2011

Architecture 2011

Architecture 2011

Being a architect for the last 8 years on a ever growing problematic economy as the Portuguese we -at the previous office - felt a need to take a different approach to the design process. So we kept changing our posture, methodology and practices. We tooled some ideas from almost vernacular architecture - which is much more sustainable, loosen up our egos, questioned mono-functional goals and proposed less exposed investments, with faster return. A sign of good design is when the solution seems natural and doesn’t require complex explanations. I believe that this is the best way to move us forward with clarity while making fewer mistakes in life.

I think we are on the verge of a paradigm shift in the way we see and do architecture, from private thinking into a more open approach based on collaborative community. The modernist movement from which we all absorbed some of the austere function-preceds-form paradigm soon exhausted it’s solutions for ever demanding needs of comfort, identity, and tolerance on the new urban space with all it’s plurality of cultures and lifestyles. If we see the subsequent reactionary Post-Modern thinking, with roots on the 60’s, proposing a liberalization of the form as a way to express other ideas. Despite providing for a much needed expression of identity and being a quite cool ideal in the right direction, we got suddenly faced also with all kind of big architectural projects such as asteroid-I-don’t-care projects, dildoglass projects, or even gelatinous-mind-melting projects with all sorts of edges and highly processed materials. It would be plain fun if it didn’t cost so much money and energy. This path that seeks the wow factor in magazines and political speeches can’t simply be applied to everything and frequently reminds me the sumptuous Baroque.

Keeping a promise to the Horizon…

photo: Sónia Arrepia

Between the wild hysteria of worthless speculative building, in a tightly-confined space, left over and neglected in the voracious consumption of land already dying under hostile occupation, there stands… the elegant expression of conceptual order!

The volume exhibits a Cartesian reduction to the essentials, almost classical in its dimensions. The design is grounded on a perceptive approach to the surroundings, the deciding factor in the sign valency of the object, and has been sensitively seen through to its fruition. As in a theatre, despite the limited access, the opening to the world is thus contrived to materialize the setting in such a way as to identify mass with light, the tangible representation of the backdrop image – the horizon of the Algarve coast!

A presence of objective lucidity, the building of the bar ‘Gingko’ in Portimão, stands forth white and pure, making a contrast from which it affirms its existence and its survival, an existence based on the solid matter of the natural, physical background that informs the underlying imaginative conception.

Tiago Rosado architecture portfolio The structural linearity, with the special feature of the architectural appropriation of the outdoor café area in line with the rich Portuguese tradition in transitional spaces, is the solution to the problem. It plays a deliberate role in the expression of a building with a clear purpose and undeniable character. At first glance, the building looks like a pavement café or bar – and that is what it is!

The insignificant direction of this spatial structure imposes its own visual impression, but it has been brought to life by the clarity of the architectural language. The grammar of the architecture is cohesive with the text of the horizon… The result is a concise statement in the urban context (like the pointed interjection that raises discourse from banality), immediately intelligible from its functional, formal and chromatic integrity, which deals with the feeling and nature of this space, evokes human states of mind, and intensifies and enriches the experience of the social life and events for which it was made.

Also by exhibiting it’s inner structural components, that whole idea of coherence and integrity, get’s truer - not only as sustained relations between form and function, ambience and space, but also between the inner constituent elements of the building with the whole - I like this almost classical notion of not hiding anything on a building.

photo: Fernando Guerra

The back structural concrete wall of the corridor was meant to be covered with artwork but as soon as I saw these incredible textures I realized that they would solve another problem I was facing: the ambience was too “clean” and “pure” - like a mask of some sort - I was therefore feeling the need to have something to balance all these notions - the solution provided itself!

The client asked for a out of the ordinary house that explored the relation of his privileged terrain, a narrow strip of land wonderfully located behind a cliff, with the sea and nature.

This region of the Algarve is still a bit wild and less occupied by speculative growth. The perfect place to lay off and enjoy.

When a design paradigm becomes clear, intrinsic coherence becomes one of the stronger outcome aspects and some sort of composition grammar emerges helping us to decide what is the right direction to solve livability issues.

Seen from distance the house clearly shows its clear geometric composition. The growing form, almost spartan and unobstructed by openings, give it a sculptural dimension as if it’s true purpose was solely the affirmation of a thought.

The affirmative values of close relationship with the environment and clear conceptual purposes give little room for attention to the traditional appropriation of space normally accomplished with formal solutions usually full of colonial desire for exhibition of wealth trough ornament, creating therefore the house a strong and healthy antagonism with it’s neighbors..

This apparent simplicity creates a unique relation to the natural environment that subsists in the form of a huge variety of small autochthon vegetation.

Tradition is something to look upon with care and attention. Instead of anachronic copying in order to satisfy clients full of faux-vintage ideas, we can look at the old ways in order to formulate new questions. Today we have a panoply of building solutions and being most of them with just a few years old and there’s really no way we can vouch for sure how good they’ll be as time passes. I have a colleague who had his house built with a cappotto system - just to find out that some ants nearby just love to build galleries in them.. The real traditional architecture from Algarve has among other characteristics controlled openings to filter the abundant sunlight, flat ceilings to dry food, and sometimes interstitial spaces to help create shade areas for outdoor living and its mostly painted white - thus reflecting excessive radiation. It’s not a matter of replicating now the old ways - thus the anachronism - but to be smart enough and use now all this knowledge that’s just begging to be considered.

The expressive form of this kinder garden was the result of a preliminary study that tried to take into account a few issues related with these kind of spaces, namely a good space distribution that created the necessary separation of kids according to their age and activities, and different outdoor spaces that could work even in the sunniest days. The kids and parents entrance is quite elongated in order to avoid the parking problems in peak hours.

We can also argue that parks only exist to balance excessive urbanized areas, being some sort of a signal of wrong planning like going to a doctor to fix a illness, in this case a urban illness! Here, even a simple thing as to go shopping or visit someone would be a changing experience as one would be also in touch with nature. We would get cars, sure, but parked bellow.

when we cut a stone, it’s surface wont longer be the natural one, more imprecise and rough. So in order to restore this special and natural look each stone passes through a flaming process that will erode more quickly the surface and thus allowing the restoration of it’s natural look. Tactile feelings are often forgotten at our work scale as architects but they can provide remarkable sensations when properly used.
